- 0:01zani good morning Ricky how are you good
- 0:03morning n how are you you are amazing I
- 0:06must say thank you very much you
- 0:08survived for 71 days in an environment
- 0:10where I think people wouldn't even make
- 0:12it for 4 days or five days no I was very
- 0:15lucky I was very lucky okay so you are
- 0:18Australian yes yes tell
- 0:20me I'm sure it's it'll bring back a lot
- 0:23of sad memories but still can you share
- 0:25with us what exactly happened that date
- 0:28was January 2006 2 years ago you were 35
- 0:31then what were you doing in the outback
- 0:33basically I was traveling from one side
- 0:35of Australia to the other um to start a
- 0:37new job and um I was traveling through
- 0:41the center of Australia which is very
- 0:42desolate and I stopped to help some
- 0:45people who were pretending to be broken
- 0:47down on the side of the road with their
- 0:49vehicle and I helped one of them let
- 0:51them in my vehicle and ended up getting
- 0:54drugged and mugged and left for dead in
- 0:56the middle of the desert oh my God can I
- 0:58you lost your Consciousness and when you
- 1:00woke up where were you and how were you
- 1:03when I woke up um it was funny all I
- 1:06could smell was the earth dirt and um
- 1:09everything was black and um I remember I
- 1:12was laying on my arm and um I felt
- 1:15something heavy on my back and I I
- 1:19pushed myself off the ground and I was
- 1:21literally in a shallow hole laying in a
- 1:24shallow hole with a piece of tar pooline
- 1:26over me um which somebody had left me in
- 1:29like a makeshift grave basically no
- 1:31clothes no shoes they took my shoes my
- 1:33socks I had a pair of shorts and a
- 1:35t-shirt on and that was it so yeah I was
- 1:39left there to die so so they they knew
- 1:41you will be roast in the sun you'll get
- 1:43how's the temperature like um the
- 1:45temperature out then out there then was
- 1:47around 38 to
- 1:5042° um it was the end of the wet season
- 1:53in Australia so there was still a little
- 1:55bit of rain and a little bit of cloud
- 1:57around um but it was starting to heat up
- 1:59at that part of the
- 2:00near that time of the and no shade no
- 2:02shade very few trees what was the first
- 2:04thought that came in your mind when you
- 2:06saw I mean for somebody I mean it's we
- 2:09hear and read about it all the time but
- 2:10you were there it happened to you what
- 2:12was what were the first thoughts you
- 2:14know that came when I first woke up it
- 2:16actually took me probably half an hour
- 2:18or so to work out what had actually
- 2:19happened um I sort of I stood up then I
- 2:22fell back down again and I sat there
- 2:25wondering what the hell happened where
- 2:27was I and um and then it started to come
- 2:29back to me I thought hang on a second I
- 2:31was driving where's my car and I was
- 2:33looking around I couldn't see my car and
- 2:35then slowly over the next few hours it's
- 2:38bits and pieces started to come back to
- 2:39me as to what had happened and um then I
- 2:42realized that um yeah I was in the
- 2:44middle of the desert I didn't know where
- 2:45I was I had no car I had no shoes and um
- 2:49I sort of sat there for next day I was
- 2:50wondering what I was going to do and um
- 2:54I got up and there was a bit of a hill
- 2:56off in the distance so I sort of walked
- 2:58towards the hill first to climb on top
- 2:59top of the hill to see if I could see
- 3:01any roads or see if I could see my car
- 3:03tell us a bit about this desert how big
- 3:05is this how large is this and if you go
- 3:06by foot um how many days can you cover
- 3:09it okay if you had to go by foot it
- 3:11would probably take you a week to walk
- 3:12across it and you should have good
- 3:13supply of water yes yes Food Water Shoes
- 3:16by it takes one
- 3:23day oh my God so but you managed to
- 3:26cover half of the distance in well I
- 3:28ended up walking approximately 90 km now
- 3:32when I say walking I actually found a
- 3:34seasonal Creek um a seasonal River at
- 3:36that point in time and I actually
- 3:37floated Downstream for about half a day
- 3:40maybe about 6 or 8 hours all up so I
- 3:43walked about 84 km and I floated through
- 3:46on in a river for about 6 km and um I
- 3:50managed to find a road which um I walked
- 3:53on down a road and came to a cattle
- 3:56station in the middle of the Northern
- 3:57Territory um which this cattle station
- 4:00was 22,000 km Square so that sort of
- 4:02gives you an IDE idea of the size of one
- 4:05of the properties out there oh my God
- 4:07yeah and no person nobody there nobody
- 4:10nobody nobody goes
- 4:12there a dune drive or something like
- 4:14that not this not this time of the this
- 4:16particular time of the year um a lot of
- 4:18the roads are wet and washed out so even
- 4:20the the station hands and the station
- 4:23people don't venture out much during the
- 4:25wet season because you just get bogged
- 4:26in your car so they sort of they wait
- 4:29till
- 4:33okay then you started walking you know
- 4:35first day you you had Hope Oh I can make
- 4:37it I I can do it the first few days the
- 4:40first few days every day that I woke up
- 4:42um I thought today was the day that I
- 4:44would find something find a house find a
- 4:46road or a car or today the day that
- 4:48somebody will be driving down the road
- 4:50and they will find me um for the first
- 4:52couple of weeks I never thought that I
- 4:54was going to be out there for any length
- 4:55of time I actually thought every day
- 4:57that I woke up today was the day I was
- 4:58going to be found
- 5:00the biggest problem is if you stuck in a
- 5:02situation like this the food and water
- 5:04obviously water kills you first lack of
- 5:06water and then the
- 5:07food how did you survive okay when was
- 5:10the first time you got hungry really
- 5:11hungry the really hungry was probably
- 5:13about 6 7 days into it and and water
- 5:17water okay I didn't have any water for
- 5:19the first two days so I actually had to
- 5:20drink my own urine which oh my
- 5:24God for the first two days you were your
- 5:26own urine very unpleasant if you have to
- 5:29do it I suggest you let it cool down
- 5:31first it's not very it doesn't taste
- 5:34very nice um but then on the on the
- 5:36afternoon of the second day I actually
- 5:38saw some rain clouds off in the distance
- 5:41and I headed towards those round claves
- 5:43round claves I missed the rain but um it
- 5:46left a few pockets of water in amongst
- 5:48the rocks and so I actually got had a
- 5:50little bit of a little bit of a drink
- 5:52through um through the rocks and stuff
- 5:54like that where the water had pulled um
- 5:56and then on the third day um I saw rain
- 5:59clouds off in the distance again and I
- 6:01followed those rainclouds and that's
- 6:02when I found the seasonal River so in
- 6:05the wet season the desert literally
- 6:07forms the river like it does in here in
- 6:09the UAE most of the time the Wes are dry
- 6:12so the fourth day you found some water
- 6:13yes the fourth day I found a lot of
- 6:15water and um I ended up camping near
- 6:18near a big water hole for 4 days um and
- 6:21just through that period I actually
- 6:24study this is the water hole this is
- 6:25where you found the water this is
- 6:26actually the last Dam the last water
- 6:28hole that I found which I camped on for
- 6:30approximately 7 weeks and the water is
- 6:32not fit for drinking right it didn't
- 6:33look as bad as that when I first came
- 6:36across it but um because it was the wet
- 6:38season all the dams and water holes had
- 6:41just filled up with clean water so I was
- 6:43very very lucky luy good timing yes yeah
- 6:46yeah okay and then the sixth day y you
- 6:49had not eaten for six
- 6:54days sixth day when you got really
- 6:56hungry and you had to walk and find the
- 6:59RO
- 7:00what did you eat um I basically camped
- 7:02under a tree I found a shaded tree and I
- 7:05was very tired I'd actually passed out
- 7:07once from dehydration and and lack of
- 7:10food lack of lack of energy on that day
- 7:13and I found a tree and I was laying
- 7:14under a tree and um thinking about what
- 7:18I was going to eat and a little lizard
- 7:20about this long came running past me and
- 7:23without even thinking I just went bang
- 7:25and hit him on the head and um I picked
- 7:28him up and and like he he was dead so I
- 7:31put him on a stick and I sat him out in
- 7:33the sun and I let him dry out for about
- 7:362 hours and then I peeled as much skin
- 7:38as I could off him and um that was the
- 7:41first thing I ate sick yeah and then um
- 7:45after that I started to eat a few
- 7:47different types of vegetation in the
- 7:48area I started to try different types of
- 7:51plants and things like that if it tasted
- 7:53okay I ate it if it didn't I just spat
- 7:55it out and that was basically how all my
- 7:59food s started so I know over the next
- 8:02few days after that I started trying
- 8:04different insects it's insects be
- 8:07grasshoppers
- 8:09caterpillars um stick insects I tried
- 8:12one cockroach which I don't recommend to
- 8:15anybody I put it in my mouth and it came
- 8:17out quicker than it went in it was
- 8:19disgusting disgusting cockroach has no
- 8:21meat no no no nothing it's just a you
- 8:23never know maybe I maybe it does taste
- 8:26good so you had to try it's not if it's
- 8:29not being served in China then it mean
- 8:31it's not edible then otherwise it would
- 8:33have been in China yes true true
- 8:37[Music]
- 8:57so she's just concerned you know how how
- 8:59one can survive without water and then
- 9:02you know you you it's it's so dangerous
- 9:05you want you had to walk and find your
- 9:06way out but you can't move far from the
- 9:09water no exactly right and that was the
- 9:11problem you can't walk you can't go that
- 9:12was a lot of the problem I faced um
- 9:15every time I found water um the first
- 9:18thing that crossed my mind is if I leave
- 9:20where where's where will be my next
- 9:23drink so to speak where will I find
- 9:24water next and nothing to carry some
- 9:26water with you no so it was a gamble
- 9:28every time I left one place with that
- 9:30had water to try and walk to find my way
- 9:32out I was taking a risk that I might not
- 9:34find water again so yeah okay what about
- 9:37this first um camping the first uh humpy
- 9:41that you made for yourself shelter this
- 9:44first shelter the first shelter um was I
- 9:47found like the very first one that I
- 9:50made or the first one the first very
- 9:52first shelter that I made um
