4. 0:09claiming i was worth it but apparently
5. 0:10former vice presidents or presidents are
6. 0:12worth a great deal to law firms and i
7. 0:14did work pretty hard
8. 0:15but in also in that period i earned
9. 0:18between 100
10. 0:19and 250 000 every year
11. 0:22so that when i in 1968 decided to become
12. 0:26a candidate for president
13. 0:27i decided to clean the decks i sold all
14. 0:30my stock for three hundred thousand
15. 0:32dollars
16. 0:33i sold my apartment in new york for
17. 0:35three hundred thousand dollars i'm using
18. 0:36rough figures here
19. 0:38and i had a hundred thousand dollars
20. 0:39coming to me from the law firm
21. 0:41and so that's where the money came from
22. 0:44i made my mistakes
23. 0:46but in all of my years of public life
24. 0:49i have never profited never profited
25. 0:52from public service i've earned every
26. 0:54cent
27. 0:55and i think two that i can say that i
28. 0:58welcome this kind of examination because
29. 1:00people have got to know
