Full transcript
- 0:01You doing okay this morning?
- 0:03>> Yeah.
- 0:04>> Sorry to wake you up. Well, so my name's
- 0:06Tyler and this is Steve.
- 0:08>> This is 42-year-old Amy Velardi and for
- 0:11the last 8 years, she's been living with
- 0:14a terrifying secret [music] that these
- 0:17detectives are about to expose.
- 0:19>> I got assigned the case by the homicide
- 0:22that happened in Pendleton in 2015. So,
- 0:24we we'd like to talk to you.
- 0:27>> Oh my god.
- 0:28>> In 2015, Amy's parents and grandparents
- 0:31were found brutally murdered inside
- 0:33their family home and with no witnesses
- 0:36and no physical evidence connecting
- 0:38anyone to the murders, the case slowly
- 0:42goes cold.
- 0:45>> Say hi, Amy.
- 0:46>> Years after the homicides, Amy and her
- 0:49husband Ross had moved on spending their
- 0:51new found fortune on cars, a new house,
- 0:54and expensive exotic animals. But,
- 0:56unbeknownst to everyone, the killers had
- 0:58been closer to home all along.
- 1:01>> Amy's done what she promised she was
- 1:03going to do.
- 1:04>> And what had killed her?
- 1:06Deputies and stuff screwed up all the
- 1:07evidence.
- 1:08>> You're dead smack in the middle of this
- 1:10thing.
- 1:11>> But, we're not here because we think you
- 1:13did it or you might have did it, we know
- 1:15you did it. It's piling up, Ross. We
- 1:17don't want to roll the dice on this, I'm
- 1:19telling you.
- 1:24>> We have been following this case closely
- 1:26for several years working alongside
- 1:29police departments and legal experts to
- 1:30uncover every detail and bring you
- 1:33never-before-seen footage investigating
- 1:35South Carolina's most disturbing
- 1:37quadruple homicide.
- 1:40It's approximately 10:30 a.m. on a
- 1:42Monday morning just after Halloween when
- 1:45the Anderson County Sheriff's Office
- 1:47receives a frantic 911 call from what
- 1:49sounds like a house of horrors.
- 1:52>> Anderson County 911, what's the location
- 1:54of the emergency?
- 1:55>> Oh my god. I need somebody
- 1:58>> Ma'am, I can't understand you. What
- 1:59What's your address?
- 2:00>> 22717 Redbud Road.
- 2:03>> Ma'am, ma'am, tell me what's going on.
- 2:05>> Oh my god.
- 2:06Oh my god.
- 2:07>> Is somebody hurt? Ma'am, I can't
- 2:10>> And my mom is home and they're they're
- 2:12dead. Like, there's blood everywhere.
- 2:15>> Who are these people that are in the
- 2:16house?
- 2:17>> It's my mom and my grandpa and my granny
- 2:20and my stepdad.
- 2:22>> On the line is 32-year-old Amy Willard
- 2:25reporting that her entire family has
- 2:27been murdered. Within minutes, deputies
- 2:30rush to the home where the scene
- 2:32awaiting them would be even more brutal
- 2:34than Amy had led them to believe.
- 2:40Once officers step inside, they discover
- 2:44three victims. Mike Scott, Barbara
- 2:47Scott, and Violet Taylor lying deceased
- 2:51on the living room floor.
- 2:53Several feet away, inside a bedroom,
- 2:56lies the fourth and final victim, Kathy
- 2:59Scott. Each family member appears to
- 3:01have suffered multiple stab wounds and a
- 3:04single gunshot wound to the head. As
- 3:06crime scene investigators begin
- 3:08processing the home, they discover a
- 3:10trail of shoe prints, a Clorox bleach
- 3:13bottle sitting in the kitchen sink, and
- 3:15two cell phones discarded outside. The
- 3:17only significant clues left behind by
- 3:20whoever carried out this brutal attack.
- 3:22Back outside, deputies speak with the
- 3:25911 caller, Amy. She tells officers that
- 3:28she and her husband, Ross, live next
- 3:30door and became concerned after her
- 3:33mother, Kathy, failed to take her dog
- 3:35outside this morning. When Amy went to
- 3:37check on her, she says that's when she
- 3:39discovered the bodies of her parents and
- 3:42grandparents.
- 3:44After clearing the entire house and
- 3:46finding no murder weapon and very little
- 3:48physical evidence left behind,
- 3:50investigators grow increasingly
- 3:52concerned they're dealing with a
- 3:54ruthless and calculated killer, and that
- 3:57these may not be his first victims. At
- 4:00this stage, the only people on the
- 4:02investigators' radar are Amy and Ross,
- 4:05seemingly grieving relatives of the
- 4:07victims. However, later that evening, as
- 4:10news of the Scott family murders spreads
- 4:12across Anderson County, Amy's
- 4:15ex-husband, Neil, contacts police with
- 4:18some interesting information.
- 4:21>> Said you were married to Amy previously?
- 4:24>> I was her first husband.
- 4:26I believe she's capable of this. I say
- 4:28that because while we were married, she
- 4:30tried to stab me.
- 4:31>> What brought on y'all's separation? The
- 4:33fight or
- 4:34>> Oh, actually that was one of three
- 4:36fights. One, she just tried to charge
- 4:38me, tripped her and laid her down on the
- 4:39ground, then when I went back after me.
- 4:41The other time was a knockdown, drag-out
- 4:43where I was told she hit me in one of my
- 4:45fans with a ball bat. I don't remember
- 4:47that. So, the separation was on adultery
- 4:49charges.
- 4:50>> Did you get knocked out or something?
- 4:51>> I blacked out.
- 4:53>> Listen, Neil, I appreciate you calling
- 4:54in, and I'll keep your information
- 4:56handy.
- 4:57>> Amy's violent history places her under
- 4:59suspicion, but that soon becomes the
- 5:02least of detectives' concerns, as she
- 5:04and Ross begin behaving in ways no
- 5:06genuinely grieving couple ever should.
- 5:13On Wednesday morning, acting on
- 5:15information from Amy's ex-husband,
- 5:17investigators quickly secure a search
- 5:19warrant for Amy's trailer and rush over.
- 5:22The moment they step inside, they're
- 5:25struck by a peculiar smell, one eerily
- 5:28similar to what they encountered at the
- 5:30murder scene. As the search continues,
- 5:33detectives uncover an unusual amount of
- 5:36cash, $68,000
- 5:39bundled inside a bedroom safe, along
- 5:41with 18 firearms, all of which are
- 5:44seized [music] as potential evidence.
- 5:47Considering Amy and Ross's modest
- 5:49lifestyle, this discovery immediately
- 5:52raises questions. After clearing the
- 5:54trailer, investigators ask Amy and Ross
- 5:57to come to the station for an
- 5:58opportunity to clear their names. And
- 6:00interestingly, both agree, almost as if
- 6:03they've been expecting this very moment.
- 6:06Once Amy and Ross arrive at the station,
- 6:08they're immediately asked if they're
- 6:10willing to undergo a polygraph test,
- 6:12something rarely requested of witnesses.
- 6:15Ross agrees and is the first to take a
- 6:17seat. But before asking about the
- 6:19murders, the examiner would begin by
- 6:22trying to better understand the man
- 6:23sitting across from him. And Ross is
- 6:26about to reveal something from his past
- 6:28that makes him almost impossible to
- 6:31break.
- 6:32>> This is This is Mr. Lark.
- 6:33>> I'm polygraphing them. I'm not law
- 6:36enforcement in any way, shape, or form,
- 6:38or fashion.
- 6:38>> I do a lot of tests for law enforcement,
- 6:40but I don't have a gun or a badge.
- 6:42>> Any medical problems you know about?
- 6:45>> Uh physical or
- 6:47um nothing physically wrong. Um
- 6:49>> Any medical problem?
- 6:51>> I am rated for 30% uh for PTSD.
- 6:54>> Were you actually in combat or
- 6:56I know you had embassy duty. Some
- 6:58combat?
- 6:58>> Yeah, that that was my last 3 years. My
- 7:00first 2 and 1/2 I was infantry unit.
- 7:03>> So you was in combat first 2 and 1/2
- 7:04years you were there?
- 7:05>> Yeah, like it I only did one deployment,
- 7:08so it's not like I did like back-to-back
- 7:09deployments.
- 7:09>> So that you did one deployment in
- 7:11combat?
- 7:12>> Yes, sir.
- 7:12>> Were you in Iraq?
- 7:13>> Correct, Iraq.
- 7:15>> Now you you've been in the range, you
- 7:16know what a gunshot sounds like. Now you
- 7:18know what you know what screaming and
- 7:20everything sounds like.
- 7:22>> Oh, yeah.
- 7:22>> Uh you hear anything that was out of the
- 7:25ordinary?
- 7:25>> Not out of the ordinary.
- 7:27Amy sleeps with our television on.
- 7:29>> Uh-huh.
- 7:30>> I I hate to think that that would be the
- 7:32reason why I wasn't able to go save
- 7:33someone.
- 7:34>> Like Amy hadn't done do this?
- 7:36>> No, I don't think she had anything to do
- 7:38with this.
- 7:39>> Although Ross steers detectives away
- 7:42from Amy, his own background has started
- 7:45to draw attention to himself. Ross spent
- 7:485 years in the Marine Corps. During that
- 7:50time, he received extensive hand-to-hand
- 7:52combat training with knives, along with
- 7:54specialized instruction on how to resist
- 7:56interrogation if ever captured by the
- 7:59enemy. Realizing this, the examiner
- 8:01would allow Ross to share his thoughts
- 8:03on who could be responsible. And his
- 8:05answer would be unexpected, to say the
- 8:08least.
- 8:09>> Who do you say did this?
- 8:13>> I'm just I have no freaking clue.
- 8:15>> Do you know it?
- 8:16>> Did I know it? No.
- 8:18>> And what you got to tell them?
- 8:20>> There's three possible scenarios that
- 8:23>> Okay.
- 8:23>> Um
- 8:23>> Hold on.
- 8:25>> One, Mike deals in a lot of gold. Um
- 8:29he buys and sells gold. Um he buys and
- 8:32sells guns. And he buys and sells video
- 8:34games and stuff like that. And maybe
- 8:36maybe someone was [music] disgruntled
- 8:38with a sale.
- 8:40Um or maybe someone noticed that
- 8:43you know, he dealt in a lot of this
- 8:45stuff and
- 8:46figured they'd cash in. I You know,
- 8:48that's
- 8:49>> Okay.
- 8:49>> You know, that's one scenario that could
- 8:51be a Yeah, slight possibility. Uh the
- 8:54other one, um
- 8:56>> [music]
- 8:56>> I think it was Tuesday or Wednesday of
- 8:58this past week.
- 9:00Um
- 9:01>> Okay.
- 9:01>> He had mentioned to me that he had seen
- 9:05um Amy's ex.
- 9:06>> Huh?
- 9:07>> Amy's ex-husband
- 9:09kind of skulking around. Um and then the
- 9:11third [music] thing that I've um kind of
- 9:14been thinking over the last um
- 9:16couple of hour Well, not couple hours,
- 9:18but the last 24 is
- 9:21the last couple of weeks, Mike has an
- 9:24Mike kind of has like a weird habit
- 9:26where he'll just kind of walk up to the
- 9:27end of the driveway and he'll just make
- 9:29you know, kind of make a couple of
- 9:31circles and kind of
- 9:33look back and forth. And then he'll go
- 9:35go and walk up the road. So, don't know
- 9:37if that's something that is real
- 9:39suspect. I don't know if that's
- 9:40something that's relevant, but at this
- 9:42point, you know, the detectives are
- 9:44telling me, "Hey,
- 9:46Yeah, think of anything that might be
- 9:48out of the ordinary."
- 9:49>> Unsurprisingly, none of Ross's theories
- 9:52involve himself or Amy, but now it's
- 9:55time for the polygraph, and detectives
- 9:57are about to find out whether years of
- 9:59Marine training are enough to help Ross
- 10:01beat it.
- 10:02>> In any of your Marine training, you
- 10:03you've all been taught about Have you
- 10:05got captured or anything about the
- 10:07polygraph or anything?
- 10:08>> If you get caught, captured, or
- 10:09whatever, you give your name, your rank,
- 10:11social security number, blah, blah,
- 10:12blah. Don't give any other information,
- 10:14so on and so forth.
- 10:16>> Did you live in South Carolina?
- 10:18>> Yes.
- 10:19>> Regarding physically harming any of
- 10:20those people, do you intend to answer
- 10:22truthfully each question?
- 10:23>> Yes, sir.
- 10:24>> Before last year, did you ever
- 10:25intentionally harm anyone?
- 10:27>> No, sir.
- 10:28>> Did you physically harm anyone in that
- 10:30house?
- 10:31>> No, sir.
- 10:32>> Is there something else you're afraid of
- 10:33last year's question about?
- 10:35>> No, sir.
- 10:36So, you kept calling it a test. Did I
- 10:38pass my test?
- 10:40I was just joking. I said, "You keep
- 10:41calling it a test, you know, did I pass
- 10:43my test?"
- 10:48>> The examiner gives nothing away, leaving
- 10:50Ross in the dark about whether he passed
- 10:52or failed his polygraph. Meanwhile, Amy
- 10:55is brought into another room for her own
- 10:57test. Like Ross, she's about to be asked
- 11:00who she believes is responsible for her
- 11:02family's murders, and her answer would
- 11:05shift suspicion to someone already
- 11:07familiar to investigators.
- 11:09>> This is probably going through your head
- 11:11a million times since then. Tell me Tell
- 11:13me what your theory is.
- 11:15>> A lot of different scenarios have went
- 11:17through my head.
- 11:18>> Mhm.
- 11:19>> My uh my ex-husband
- 11:23and did not have a good relationship
- 11:24with my parents.
- 11:26>> Mhm. Can you think of a motive why he
- 11:28would be involved in something like
- 11:30that?
- 11:31>> My mom and stepdad were pushing him for
- 11:34child support. We're pushing him to take
- 11:36care of his son and
- 11:38>> Okay.
- 11:39>> And was not doing that.
- 11:41>> Okay.
- 11:42Tell me why you would not be involved in
- 11:44something like this.
- 11:46>> I love my family.
- 11:49I love them.
- 11:50There's no way that I can and especially
- 11:53the scene that was in there, I could
- 11:55never do that kind of thing.
- 11:57>> Okay.
- 11:58>> Although Amy attempts to steer
- 12:00detectives towards her ex-husband
- 12:02Daniel, they have no evidence linking
- 12:05him to the murders and are not
- 12:06considering him a suspect. But now it's
- 12:09time for the test. Unlike Ross, she's
- 12:11never been trained to withstand the
- 12:13pressure of a high stakes interrogation
- 12:14[music]
- 12:15and as far as she knows, both her future
- 12:18and Ross's depend entirely [music]
- 12:21on her results.
- 12:23>> Okay, please sit still. The test is
- 12:25about to begin.
- 12:27Are the lights on in this room?
- 12:29>> Yes.
- 12:31>> Regarding whether you were involved in
- 12:33the deaths of any of those people in
- 12:35that double-wide, are you going to tell
- 12:36me the [music] truth today?
- 12:38>> Yes.
- 12:39>> Were you present when any of those
- 12:41people in that double-wide were shot?
- 12:44>> No.
- 12:46>> Did you cause any of those injuries to
- 12:48any of those people in that double-wide?
- 12:50>> No.
- 12:51>> Do you know the name of the person who
- 12:53caused any of those injuries to any of
- 12:55those people in that double-wide?
- 12:58>> No.
- 12:59>> You may not be entirely satisfied with
- 13:03the way things are going.
- 13:05>> No.
- 13:05>> Right now.
- 13:06>> No, I do not.
- 13:07>> Well, I'm just going to tell you right
- 13:09up front, you failed the crap out of
- 13:10this polygraph.
- 13:11>> No.
- 13:11>> Okay. There's no doubt in my mind that
- 13:14you are involved in some way, shape or
- 13:18form in this. Okay.
- 13:19>> Great.
- 13:20>> And it wasn't even close. It wasn't even
- 13:23close. I mean, you failed the cowboy dog
- 13:26[ __ ] out of this test. You could not
- 13:28have done any worse. Their theory is
- 13:31that you're dead smack in the middle of
- 13:33this thing and Ross is dead smack in the
- 13:35middle of it.
- 13:36>> Well, didn't Ross pass it is?
- 13:38>> No.
- 13:39Hell no. No, he didn't pass it.
- 13:43>> If you go smoke and come back and talk
- 13:45to us.
- 13:46>> Um, I would like to go talk to my lawyer
- 13:49in their office next.
- 13:51Take your time.
- 13:52>> Let me ask you this.
- 13:55My goal every time I do this is to be
- 13:58fair.
- 13:59Do you think I was fair to you today?
- 14:02Okay.
- 14:03Thank you. I appreciate that.
- 14:05>> In reality, from this moment on, Amy
- 14:08would hold a grudge against the
- 14:09examiner. One that would stay with her
- 14:12for years. Despite failing the
- 14:14polygraph, the results alone aren't
- 14:16enough to prove guilt. Without a
- 14:18confession or physical evidence,
- 14:20detectives have no choice but to let the
- 14:22couple go. And before long, the
- 14:25investigation comes to a halt.
- 14:30As weeks turn into months, leads begin
- 14:33to dry up and the case eventually goes
- 14:36cold. For a time, Amy continues giving
- 14:40public interviews pleading for the
- 14:41killer to be found. But behind closed
- 14:44doors, life goes on for Amy and Ross and
- 14:47it appears they've put the tragedy
- 14:50behind them.
- 14:52After inheriting the family's home, the
- 14:55couple begins renovating the very place
- 14:57where the murders took place. Once the
- 14:59work is complete, they move in and
- 15:01settle into a comfortable new life
- 15:03benefiting from the money left behind by
- 15:06[music] the victims. During this time,
- 15:09Ross would spend nearly $40,000 on a
- 15:11Dodge Ram, a Mustang, [music]
- 15:13two Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and a
- 15:16Yamaha personal watercraft. Eventually,
- 15:19the couple would sell the home and move
- 15:21to West Columbia, South Carolina. All
- 15:24the while, they would keep the truth
- 15:25hidden not only [music] from
- 15:27investigators, but also from their own
- 15:29children, who were still too young to
- 15:31understand where all this new found
- 15:33fortune [music] had come from.
- 15:35>> Hey, I'm a little nervous.
- 15:36>> Honey, I'll show you some.
- 15:37>> Yeah, see you. Hope you
- 15:39>> little nervous.
- 15:45>> It's now 2023, and in an unexpected
- 15:48twist, the television series Cold
- 15:51[music] Justice approaches the Anderson
- 15:53County Sheriff's Office with the hope of
- 15:55finally solving the case. And 8 years
- 15:57later, the investigation is officially
- 15:59reopened.
- 16:00>> [music]
- 16:01>> Detective Tyler Duncan is assigned
- 16:03alongside veteran investigator Steve
- 16:05Spingola, and together, they're tasked
- 16:08with re-examining every piece of
- 16:09evidence collected [music] back in 2015.
- 16:12And as he scrolls through years of
- 16:14Facebook posts, [music] he comes across
- 16:16something unexpected, a video the couple
- 16:20would soon regret not deleting. Without
- 16:23this recording, detectives might have
- 16:25hit yet another frustrating dead end,
- 16:28especially since Amy's parents had no
- 16:30CCTV cameras surrounding their home. And
- 16:32it shows just how important reliable
- 16:34security can be, because when something
- 16:36happens, every second matters. That's
- 16:39why this video is sponsored by
- 16:40SimpliSafe home security to provide you
- 16:43with a trusted way to secure your own
- 16:45home. After I installed SimpliSafe, I
- 16:47felt much safer at home knowing that if
- 16:50anything moves where it shouldn't, I'll
- 16:51be alerted immediately, along with
- 16:53real-life security pros who can quickly
- 16:55step in help. SimpliSafe's [music]
- 16:57brand-new Active Guard outdoor
- 16:59protection means those pros can see a
- 17:01suspicious person in my driveway and
- 17:04speak to them, flash the spotlights,
- 17:06even call police before a break-in ever
- 17:08happens. Old alarm systems wait until
- 17:10the door is kicked in. Active Guard
- 17:12tells the intruder, "Hands up, police
- 17:14are on the way." while they're still
- 17:16outside. The tech is smart enough to
- 17:18tell friends from foes, so your partner
- 17:20or the dog walker won't trigger a 3:00
- 17:22a.m. panic. What I find myself using the
- 17:25most is their video doorbell, which
- 17:27sends me a notification whenever there's
- 17:28motion at my door, and even allows me to
- 17:31communicate with anyone at my door
- 17:33through its built-in speakers, saving me
- 17:35from porch pirates and keeping my
- 17:37packages safe. Their app even lets me

- 18:11to the video that's about to spell
- 18:13serious trouble for Amy and Ross.
- 18:16>> You guys keep calling the police.
- 18:18>> Okay.
- 18:18>> And you guys keep making calls.
- 18:20>> I did not call no police. I don't know
- 18:22anything.
- 18:22>> Yes, you might call the police on us
- 18:24last today.
- 18:25>> I don't know what day it is. That's all
- 18:27right.
- 18:28>> He's making calls for Amy and I, not
- 18:30only for us personally,
- 18:31>> Amy and me, not Amy and I.
- 18:34Amy and me.
- 18:35If you don't know English, stay in it.
- 18:38>> Wow.
- 18:39>> Wow.
- 18:40Hold on. Let me go get my grandmother,
- 18:42who's actually an English teacher, and
- 18:44we'll find out who's correct.
- 18:45>> Okay.
- 18:46>> Why don't you have Grandma come on out
- 18:47here real quick?
- 18:48>> I don't think your grandma wants to deal
- 18:49with this [music] trash. No. This is
- 18:52ridiculous at this point.
- 18:54>> Dad, you don't know do-do from diapers?
- 18:57>> Yeah, that's right, Jamie. I'm a little
- 18:59slow.
- 18:59>> I'll show you some.
- 19:00>> Yep. See you. Hopefully you got
- 19:03>> This footage completely contradicts the
- 19:05story Amy and Ross had been telling
- 19:07police for years, becoming the first
- 19:09major lead Detective Duncan believes
- 19:12could finally crack the case. [music]
- 19:13And so, after 8 years with virtually no
- 19:17progress, detective Duncan prepares to
- 19:19pay Amy and Ross a visit. A couple who
- 19:22have spent nearly a decade believing
- 19:24they got away with murder. But what
- 19:26detective Duncan is about to do is not
- 19:29without risks. Knowing the couple had
- 19:31already lawyered up in the past,
- 19:33detectives know they have only one
- 19:35chance to get this right or risk the
- 19:37case going cold for good.
- 19:41On December 11th at 8:00 a.m., detective
- 19:43Duncan and Spingola head to Amy and
- 19:45Ross's new home in West Columbia, South
- 19:47Carolina, more than 100 miles from where
- 19:50the murders took place. Once they
- 19:52arrive, the people inside the house have
- 19:54no idea their lives are about to be
- 19:57turned upside down forever.
- 20:00>> You ready?
- 20:00>> Let's go.
- 20:12>> There we
- 20:13There we go.
- 20:14>> Hey.
- 20:15>> Hey, let's go.
- 20:15>> Hey, Ross.
- 20:17I'm Tyler Duncan. I'm with Anderson
- 20:18County Sheriff's Office. This is Steve.
- 20:20>> Hi, guys.
- 20:21>> Let's go.
- 20:21>> Um so, we're I got assigned the case
- 20:24about the homicide that happened in
- 20:25Pendleton in 2015.
- 20:27>> Okay.
- 20:27>> And uh so, I'm trying to go around
- 20:30basically start from the beginning and
- 20:32since Amy Is Amy here?
- 20:33>> She is. Yeah, she is.
- 20:34>> So, since she's the one that called 911,
- 20:36I think you were there also. Um
- 20:37>> Yeah, well, I mean, I should have just
- 20:39after she called 911.
- 20:40>> Okay.
- 20:40>> Yeah.
- 20:41>> So, we we'd like to talk to you. Um
- 20:43we're kind of starting from the
- 20:44beginning of the case and going back
- 20:45through.
- 20:46>> Yeah, I mean, my house is a mess right
- 20:48now.
- 20:48>> Well, that's what we can actually go
- 20:49>> I just get We're sitting in
- 20:50>> We can get to sit in the car here and uh
- 20:52talk to you.
- 20:52>> minutes in there.
- 20:53>> All right. Do you want to talk to us
- 20:55both at the same time?
- 20:56>> We'll talk to you separately and we'll
- 20:58talk If you want to come on out, we'll
- 20:59talk to you and then we can talk to her.
- 21:01>> Okay.
- 21:04>> After Ross steps out of the house and
- 21:06walks towards the detectives vehicle.
- 21:08All three men know this could very well
- 21:11be their final standoff. The detectives
- 21:14have the element of surprise and the
- 21:16couple's unsettling digital footprint,
- 21:18while Ross relies on a rock-solid story
- 21:21backed by years of Marine training. The
- 21:23stakes have never been higher as the
- 21:25couple's future now rests entirely in
- 21:29Ross's hands.
- 21:31>> Did we wake you up?
- 21:33Oh, I'm sorry.
- 21:37So, if you just want to start from the
- 21:38kind of the beginning of what you
- 21:40remember and and we'll go from there.
- 21:42>> All right.
- 21:43>> Um
- 21:45>> Well, listen, I'm cuz that was quite a
- 21:48while ago. Um
- 21:49>> I went out to run my errands. I didn't
- 21:51really notice anything um
- 21:54out of the ordinary
- 21:56that I could see or you know, that
- 21:58morning. When Amy got up, she noticed
- 22:01that her mom's dogs had not been taken
- 22:04out yet.
- 22:05Which was weird cuz her mom takes her
- 22:07dogs out every morning.
- 22:09So, so she went out there to
- 22:11see why her mom's dogs hadn't been taken
- 22:14out.
- 22:14Um
- 22:16She let her mom's dogs out into the dog
- 22:18run
- 22:20and
- 22:21she went up to the
- 22:23house to
- 22:24you know, knock on the door, see if her
- 22:26mom maybe wasn't feeling well, see if
- 22:28something was going on that she didn't
- 22:30you know, didn't [clears throat] tell me
- 22:31about. So, she opened it up, walks in
- 22:36and
- 22:37that's when she apparently
- 22:38[clears throat]
- 22:39found the scene that she found.
- 22:42Um
- 22:43she went bolting back out of the house.
- 22:46Uh
- 22:48I believe that's when she made the call.
- 22:49I think she called 911 before she called
- 22:51me, if I
- 22:52remember correctly.
- 22:54>> From the start, detectives immediately
- 22:56notice a few things. Ross struggles to
- 22:59maintain eye contact and the story he's
- 23:01telling is one they've already partially
- 23:04verified. On the day of the murders,
- 23:06surveillance footage captured Ross at a
- 23:08nearby QuickTrip, seemingly supporting
- 23:10his account. But what appeared to clear
- 23:12Ross of suspicion 8 years earlier would
- 23:15eventually become one of the strongest
- 23:17pieces of [music] evidence against him.
- 23:21For now, Ross's story matches his
- 23:24original account. But as he continues
- 23:25[music] talking, small changes would
- 23:28begin to emerge, giving detectives an
- 23:31unexpected lead.
- 23:32>> Can you describe, I guess, your kind of
- 23:34your relationship with with Mike and
- 23:36Kathy?
- 23:36>> Yeah, so um at first when uh
- 23:40uh when Amy and I first started dating,
- 23:42um
- 23:43uh my relationship with Mike was really
- 23:45great, actually. Kathy is one of those
- 23:48people that
- 23:50if you don't understand her, she's hard
- 23:52to swallow. But I mean, overall, I'm I
- 23:56mean, she was a really good person, I
- 23:58think. Um it's like just some of her
- 24:00mannerisms were a little bit
- 24:03we'll say fun.
- 24:05There was a couple things that kind of
- 24:06were red flags, but I don't know if they
- 24:08have anything to do with this or not.
- 24:11Um one of them was
- 24:14at really weird times and weird hours of
- 24:16the day and night,
- 24:19I would see Mike
- 24:21walking around the perimeter of the
- 24:23property talking to himself. And
- 24:25something like this,
- 24:27what do [clears throat]
- 24:28where does your investigation normally
- 24:30What do you guys normally follow in
- 24:32cases?
- 24:33>> [music]
- 24:34>> TV shows that I watch
- 24:36always say, "Follow the money."
- 24:38>> [music]
- 24:38>> Right?
- 24:40That That's one of the biggest things.
- 24:41Follow the money
- 24:43and you find out where the real motives
- 24:46are.
- 24:47>> Interestingly, this follow the money
- 24:50approach will prove to be the key to
- 24:52solving the case, but not in the way
- 24:54Ross thinks. After a few more minutes,
- 24:57Ross's interview comes to an end and
- 25:00he's asked to let Amy know it's her
- 25:02turn. As detectives wait for her, they
- 25:05know the last time Amy spoke to law
- 25:06enforcement, she sat silently as they
- 25:09angrily confronted her over failing a
- 25:11polygraph test. But now, Amy's attitude
- 25:14would be very different and detectives
- 25:16are about to see how eight years of
- 25:18carrying a terrifying secret had changed
- 25:21her.
- 25:23>> Who's the victim?
- 25:24>> I got that very quickly.
- 25:26>> Yep.
- 25:26>> Very quickly and
- 25:28and he goes on and on and on. Benefits
- 25:30from this one.
- 25:31>> Excellent.
- 25:32>> But follow the money.
- 25:33>> Follow the money.
- 25:35>> You could tell that he's
- 25:36>> Yeah, I saw him.
- 25:37>> [music]
- 25:37>> Yeah.
- 25:37>> And crying and you know
- 25:38>> And every time he's talking
- 25:41he would look and then when he would go
- 25:42to answer and and again I don't I don't
- 25:44but but he can't look at you in the in
- 25:46the face.
- 25:47>> His timeline is extremely off.
- 25:51>> You can just hop in the passenger seat.
- 25:55Okay. Well, we can
- 25:57we can stand outside.
- 25:59You doing okay this morning?
- 26:00>> Yeah.
- 26:01>> Sorry to wake you up. Well, so my name's
- 26:03Tyler, this is Steve.
- 26:04>> you?
- 26:05>> But when we start with a case, you know,
- 26:07we're considered a cold case, we want to
- 26:09start from the beginning. That's how I
- 26:11operate. I hope you have no bad feelings
- 26:13with me. Um
- 26:14I'm sorry that the maybe the county or
- 26:16somebody has has irritated you. I can
- 26:18only imagine.
- 26:19>> Irritation, you know, you get pretty
- 26:21irritated about
- 26:23lies
- 26:24>> I understand.
- 26:25>> and stuff going around
- 26:26>> everything else and how that affects
- 26:27your children.
- 26:29>> Certainly.
- 26:29>> And
- 26:30>> But we're we're trying to do right by
- 26:31your mother, your grand your grandmother
- 26:34and then obviously Mr. Scott and and his
- 26:36mom. So
- 26:37>> I don't know if y'all are
- 26:42redoing it and y'all going to do it
- 26:43justice and that would be wonderful.
- 26:46>> Despite Amy claiming she's okay with the
- 26:49case being reopened, her defensive
- 26:52demeanor tells detectives otherwise.
- 26:54After reviewing the original case file,
- 26:56Detective Duncan knows that confronting
- 26:59Amy directly has never worked. So,
- 27:02learning from their previous experience,
- 27:03he decides to take an opposite approach
- 27:05to get to the bottom of what Amy truly
- 27:08feels about the victims.
- 27:10>> What do you remember? What can you help
- 27:12us with? Where should we look?
- 27:14>> I mean
- 27:16I
- 27:17I mean, obviously you got to know
- 27:18finding
- 27:20dead people doesn't really leave you in
- 27:22the right state of mind.
- 27:24It can do things to you.
- 27:25>> Yes, ma'am.
- 27:26>> Um
- 27:27but [music] and then everything that
- 27:29ensued, I mean, honestly, I can't even
- 27:30tell you. I can barely remember the
- 27:32funerals.
- 27:33I don't really remember much about being
- 27:35inside the house anymore. I I think I
- 27:37blocked that out. That's just and that's
- 27:39just how it's going to have to be at
- 27:40this point because I've got children.
- 27:42I've got to be here for them and I can't
- 27:44be in a loon bin.
- 27:46We had another girl that I was working
- 27:47for. She was around at the time here and
- 27:49there. Roxy.
- 27:52>> You said her name was Roxy?
- 27:53>> Yeah, Roxy Ford.
- 27:55>> How about letting So, he Roxy tell us a
- 27:57little bit about like the relationship
- 28:00between like I guess y'all and the
- 28:02family. Uh and I guess it was good and
- 28:05then something happened.
- 28:06>> Uh yeah, I mean, what happened?
- 28:09Um every I mean, a lot of people
- 28:11remember what happened.
- 28:12We got into it around 4th of July or
- 28:14something with Mike. It didn't have much
- 28:17to do with with my mom and my
- 28:19grandmother, of course. My father died
- 28:21when I was 18, so I didn't need another
- 28:23father cuz I was 23 and had my own kid.
- 28:26And there had always been issues there
- 28:28for years.
- 28:30>> [clears throat]
- 28:30>> But way before this. So,
- 28:33he had issues with a couple of my
- 28:35ex-husbands. He had issues with a couple
- 28:37of my friends.
- 28:38>> Now, who who This is Mike?
- 28:40>> Yeah.
- 28:40>> Okay.
- 28:41>> Um
- 28:42I really hate to tell y'all this. It
- 28:44probably sounds horrible coming from me,
- 28:45but he wasn't a nice person.
- 28:48>> For the first time in 8 years, Amy
- 28:51admits she never had a good relationship
- 28:54with her stepfather, but detectives
- 28:56would later learn her resentment towards
- 28:58him went far deeper. She also points
- 29:01Duncan and Spingola towards her friend
- 29:04and former employee, Roxy, someone
- 29:06detectives now need to interview as soon
- 29:08as possible. Before wrapping up,
- 29:11detective Spingola has one more question
- 29:13for Amy, one they would return to again
- 29:16and again throughout the investigation.
- 29:19>> How were things going financially at
- 29:20that time, okay?
- 29:21>> Yeah, it was fine.
- 29:23>> No problems?
- 29:24>> Nothing abnormal for me.
- 29:26>> And you tried to cooperate, and you
- 29:28answered questions before?
- 29:29>> Yeah.
- 29:29>> You took a polygraph?
- 29:31>> Yeah.
- 29:31>> How'd that go?
- 29:32>> Uh, they were like they I don't they
- 29:35wouldn't even tell me. They acted like I
- 29:37did something horrible on it, you know,
- 29:39and it's not that I haven't wanted
- 29:42to cooperate. It's just you get to a
- 29:45certain point and you see where things
- 29:46are going and you're like, you know
- 29:47what? This isn't good.
- 29:49>> Okay. You're not lost, ma'am.
- 29:50Thank you for talking to us.
- 29:52>> Thank you. Take care.
- 29:54>> She can't remember anything, but because
- 29:56she doesn't remember her lies.
- 29:58Am I wrong?
- 30:01>> Despite Amy's best attempts, detectives
- 30:04know her account is full of lies, even
- 30:08more so than Ross's. Still, at this
- 30:11stage, they have nothing concrete tying
- 30:14either Amy or Ross to the murders, and
- 30:16the couple knows it. Once detectives
- 30:18return to the station, both sides
- 30:20realize they're at a pivotal point in
- 30:23the investigation, as the next 24 hours
- 30:26could determine whether Amy and Ross
- 30:28walk free or spend the rest of their
- 30:29lives behind bars.
- 30:33The following morning, detective Scotty
- 30:35Hill and prosecutor Kelly Siegler follow
- 30:38up on the previous day's leads and
- 30:40decide to pay a visit to Amy's former
- 30:42co-worker, Roxy. The detective's hunch
- 30:45is that Amy believes this interview will
- 30:48strengthen her alibi. But by introducing
- 30:50a new potential witness, whatever Roxy
- 30:53is about to say now has the power to
- 30:55shift the investigation in either the
- 30:57detective's or the couple's favor.
- 31:04>> Hey Roxy, how are you doing?
- 31:05>> I'm good, how are you?
- 31:06>> I'm fine.
- 31:09Basically, what we We've decided to do
- 31:11is start this case [music]
- 31:13from the beginning and work it like it's
- 31:15never been worked before.
- 31:16>> Okay.
- 31:17>> Do everything we can. So, obviously, you
- 31:19were kind of a big deal in the early
- 31:22early days of the case. You worked for a
- 31:24Ross named Amy, right?
- 31:26And how was she to work for?
- 31:27>> Um cool, laid back. Um
- 31:31we jumped around a lot, never took
- 31:32anything too serious.
- 31:34Um I think I seen
- 31:36>> [music]
- 31:37>> um
- 31:38Kathy and
- 31:40What was his name?
- 31:41>> Mike.
- 31:41>> Mike.
- 31:42>> Mhm.
- 31:42>> Um
- 31:43at [music] the the shop, the grooming
- 31:45shop, twice. And the first time
- 31:48everything was great, and then the
- 31:50second time they came, uh it wasn't
- 31:52[music] good.
- 31:53Um it was kind of I was in the back
- 31:55grooming, so I didn't hear everything
- 31:57that was going on,
- 31:58but
- 31:59just watching body language and hearing
- 32:01what they were saying
- 32:03>> [music]
- 32:03>> at the time,
- 32:04it wasn't it was something to do with
- 32:07money.
- 32:07>> Okay.
- 32:08>> Um because afterwards, Stacy I'm Stacy
- 32:11uh Amy had talked about um how she was
- 32:14going to keep her kids away from
- 32:17um
- 32:18Kathy and Mike.
- 32:20>> Mhm.
- 32:20>> And that's when they
- 32:22we just went kaputs from there. They
- 32:23never
- 32:24>> [music]
- 32:25>> got along after that.
- 32:26And then throughout working there, she'd
- 32:28always tell me about how [music] she was
- 32:30treated growing up and all that, so.
- 32:33>> What kind of stuff would she say about
- 32:34how she was treated?
- 32:35>> Um she told me that she was always a
- 32:38daddy's girl and when um,
- 32:42her dad passed away
- 32:44>> [music]
- 32:45>> I think she said her dad had a he was
- 32:47working on a car and it crushed him and
- 32:49he was
- 32:49>> [music]
- 32:49>> placed in the hospital
- 32:51um,
- 32:51and her mom decided to pull the plug on
- 32:54him and she said she was only 13 and so
- 32:57she didn't really have a say so
- 32:59>> [music]
- 32:59>> but
- 33:00she always uh, hated her mom for that.
- 33:03>> What Roxy has just [music] revealed
- 33:06could provide detectives with one of the
- 33:08strongest motives behind the murders as
- 33:11[music] Amy's hatred towards her mother
- 33:13over the decision to remove her father
- 33:15from life support had only deepened over
- 33:18the years and as detectives wrap up the
- 33:20interview and relay their findings to
- 33:22Duncan and Svingala, Amy and Ross are
- 33:24completely unaware that their luxurious
- 33:27life is about to come crashing down.
- 33:31While Amy and Ross continue enjoying
- 33:33their freedom, Duncan and Svingala drive
- 33:35over to two people who knew the victims
- 33:37better than almost [music] anyone else.
- 33:39Their closest friends, Stan and Mary. To
- 33:42see if their stories match, detectives
- 33:44decide to interview them separately and
- 33:46while they expect [music] to hear more
- 33:48unsubstantiated claims, they're about to
- 33:51uncover much more than that.
- 33:54>> Do we just hop in the passenger seat so
- 33:55we can sit down and and talk about what
- 33:57happened back in 2015 real quick?
- 34:00We're investigating the case again going
- 34:02through going through everything.
- 34:05>> Um, and
- 34:07that's kind of why you know, we can kind
- 34:09of talk in private a little bit and just
- 34:11see. I know at some point in time I
- 34:13think you had called and talked with
- 34:14some detectives back back then and stuff
- 34:17so
- 34:17>> I did because I felt like I I needed to
- 34:19tell them what I knew about what Barbara
- 34:22had told me.
- 34:23>> I kind of I kind of come on the case
- 34:25earlier this year um, started reviewing
- 34:27it and stuff um
- 34:29>> I hope you catch them man. I tell you
- 34:31what. We were with him, uh, Kathy was
- 34:33here uh, that uh, Friday before we don't
- 34:35know exactly when she died, either
- 34:37Friday night or Saturday, whatever. But,
- 34:39she and Kelly and and we told the first
- 34:42people we were really good friends. She
- 34:44cleaned her house, but Mike and I were
- 34:46good friends and
- 34:48we sent food home for them.
- 34:50Our food was in their refrigerator when
- 34:52they died.
- 34:53>> I'd say at least 3 months before that
- 34:56happened,
- 34:57she was just a nervous wreck over what
- 34:59was going on uh there in that
- 35:01house. And then that last time I went,
- 35:05that was just a few days before [music]
- 35:07that happened.
- 35:09Uh Barbara was just I mean, she was
- 35:11beside herself crying and and going on
- 35:14about how uh Amy
- 35:17something bad was going to happen
- 35:18because uh uh
- 35:20Amy just
- 35:22seemed like she just hated their guts.
- 35:24>> I [music] think the week that he died or
- 35:27the weekend that he died,
- 35:30I think he told his boss that he knew he
- 35:31was going to die.
- 35:33>> Do you know why he would say that?
- 35:34>> He would get killed.
- 35:36>> He was that afraid?
- 35:37>> Yeah, he just knew. I think they might
- 35:39have I don't remember all of that stuff,
- 35:41but uh
- 35:42you know, but uh
- 35:44>> To the detectives' surprise, neither
- 35:47Stan nor Mary believe these murders came
- 35:50out of nowhere. Their accounts suggest
- 35:52this may have been a planned attack,
- 35:54potentially [music] explaining why so
- 35:56little evidence was left behind. But,
- 35:58what stood out to Stan and Mary even
- 36:00more was the couple's behavior in the
- 36:02days after the murders, convincing them
- 36:04that one of the Valorities is indeed the
- 36:08killer.
- 36:09>> Did you go to the funeral, ma'am?
- 36:10Anything unusual at the funeral?
- 36:12>> Weird.
- 36:13>> Weird why?
- 36:15>> For them just to come in like they were
- 36:17all upset and and concerned about what
- 36:19had happened. That just didn't seem
- 36:21normal to me. I don't know.
- 36:23>> Do you remember anything anything
- 36:24unusual happening at the funeral,
- 36:25anything that stuck out in your mind?
- 36:27>> Do I have to say that?
- 36:28>> Yeah.
- 36:30>> I don't want to say it.
- 36:32>> You know, we we're trying to put this
- 36:34together.
- 36:35>> She was dressed like a
- 36:38>> Red?
- 36:38>> Huh?
- 36:39>> Red dress?
- 36:40>> Uh I don't remember the color dress, but
- 36:42short dress, boots and all that kind of
- 36:44stuff.
- 36:45Kelly will be able to tell you more than
- 36:47I can on that.
- 36:48>> If she wasn't speaking to him or having
- 36:50anything to do with him, I don't know
- 36:52why she decided she'd come in and check
- 36:54on.
- 36:55>> What do you think happened?
- 36:57>> Minute I heard it, I
- 36:59I I thought
- 37:00Amy's doing what she promised she was
- 37:02going to do. I never even considered it
- 37:04being anybody else.
- 37:06>> When you heard they were
- 37:07they were murdered, what was your first
- 37:09thought?
- 37:11>> They killed her.
- 37:13>> What makes you say that?
- 37:14>> They did. They're the ones who killed
- 37:15her.
- 37:16Uh and y'all know that, too. So, several
- 37:19people have told me, you know, just
- 37:20don't have the proof. And what I was
- 37:22told, and I don't know, maybe your
- 37:23sheriff told me that, but uh they went
- 37:26in over there, the
- 37:27uh deputies and stuff thought it was a
- 37:30uh
- 37:31murder, and screwed up all the evidence.
- 37:34>> After speaking with Stan and Mary,
- 37:36detectives Duncan and Spingola know
- 37:38they're closing in on a breakthrough.
- 37:40They just hope it comes fast enough
- 37:42before the couple disappears. Over the
- 37:44following weeks, Duncan and Spingola
- 37:46conduct dozens more interviews with
- 37:48family members and friends, re-examining
- 37:50every piece of evidence to see whether
- 37:52anything had been overlooked over the
- 37:53years. And that's when they come across
- 37:55something peculiar. Amy had insisted
- 37:58from the beginning the $60,000 recovered
- 38:01from her home was her savings. But as
- 38:04investigator Duncan digs deeper, he
- 38:06discovers Amy and Ross's dog grooming
- 38:09business had been earning far less than
- 38:11they originally claimed. That's when
- 38:13Spingola uncovers something critical.
- 38:16While reviewing the victim's phone
- 38:17records, he finds that just days before
- 38:20his death, Mike had photographed stacks
- 38:22of cash to prove to a seller that he had
- 38:25enough money for an upcoming purchase.
- 38:27But upon closer inspection, the serial
- 38:30numbers in this photograph exactly match
- 38:33the cash seized from Amy and Ross's
- 38:35home. Then comes their biggest
- 38:38breakthrough yet. Duncan and Spingola
- 38:40revisit the CCTV footage from the
- 38:42morning of November 1st and identify the
- 38:45shoes Ross was wearing, red Asics
- 38:47Speedstar sneakers. When they compare
- 38:49[music] them to the bloody footprint
- 38:51left at the scene, the match is
- 38:53undeniable. Nearly a decade later,
- 38:55Detective Duncan finally has the
- 38:57concrete physical evidence he's been
- 39:00searching for.
- 39:01On the morning of December 20th,
- 39:03detectives return to the couple's home
- 39:05for what they believe will be their
- 39:07final visit. Once they arrive, they spot
- 39:09Ross's brand new Ford Mustang,
- 39:12confirming the couple hadn't
- 39:13disappeared. While Amy refuses to speak
- 39:15with them this time, Ross agrees to
- 39:18another interview. After eight years
- 39:20without an arrest, Ross is convinced any
- 39:23evidence against him simply doesn't
- 39:24exist. But he's about to get a reality
- 39:26check and his final chance to explain
- 39:29away the damning evidence stacked
- 39:31against him.
- 39:34>> Hey, so we just want to ask you a couple
- 39:36more things and we're going to get out
- 39:37of here, okay?
- 39:40So, there was something that had come up
- 39:43>> [clears throat]
- 39:43>> um while we was looking through the
- 39:45file. Do you remember owning a
- 39:47like a red pair of shoes?
- 39:50>> Red pair of shoes?
- 39:51>> Asics uh Speedstar shoes.
- 39:54>> Don't recall.
- 39:56>> So, there was a video on your phone
- 39:59of you wearing these Asics Speedstar
- 40:01shoes.
- 40:02>> I yeah, I remember those shoes.
- 40:03>> What What happened to the shoes?
- 40:06Cuz I don't think they ever found They
- 40:08never found the shoes.
- 40:10>> That's a good question cuz I have no
- 40:12idea.
- 40:14>> Possibly thrown away?
- 40:17The reason that I ask is we found
- 40:21This is from crime scene photos, and
- 40:23these are confirmed to be ASICS
- 40:25Speedstar shoes.
- 40:26>> Okay.
- 40:27>> Um inside and they have blood droplets
- 40:30on them.
- 40:30And interestingly enough, you're at the
- 40:32QuickTrip wearing those shoes the night
- 40:35of the murders.
- 40:37>> I have no idea how those shoes would
- 40:39have any kind of blood on them. I mean,
- 40:41obviously I was wearing them at the at a
- 40:43QuickTrip on the 31st.
- 40:45>> Well, and they never found the clothes
- 40:47either that you were wearing.
- 40:49>> I mean, I I can understand where that
- 40:50would look like to be a problem, but
- 40:52again, I don't
- 40:55know where the shoes are at the moment,
- 40:57and I don't remember whatever happened
- 40:58to those particular shoes. If something
- 41:01were to have happened that I had done,
- 41:03it would be stupid for me to wear them
- 41:05in the house and then wear them after
- 41:07that.
- 41:08>> Well, that's what I'm saying. They were
- 41:09never found. So, it's almost like you
- 41:11got rid of them. And y'all did benefit
- 41:13from the murders, okay, because you got
- 41:14a lot of money. We've been through your
- 41:15financials, okay?
- 41:17>> Didn't get a lot
- 41:17>> Y'all Y'all Y'all were struggling all up
- 41:21until the murders. The money found in
- 41:22your safe,
- 41:24there's money photos from Mike's
- 41:25computer that match the same serial
- 41:27numbers as the money that was found in
- 41:29the safe. So, it's not savings. That's
- 41:31money that was found inside of Mike and
- 41:33Kathy's house that Mike was saving, and
- 41:36y'all took it after you killed him,
- 41:38okay? And I'm telling you right now,
- 41:39we're going to prove it.
- 41:41>> Or you can roll the dice, and when that
- 41:42jury comes back, I'm telling you, we
- 41:44just said it's not going to be pretty.
- 41:46We're not here because we think you did
- 41:48it or you might have did it. We know you
- 41:51did it. Okay, we're just here as a
- 41:52courtesy. It's piling up, Ross.
- 41:54>> So, you're telling me that And if you
- 41:56guys said you went through my
- 41:57financials, right, you saw where I had
- 42:00made the money.
- 42:02>> And we saw where you spent it.
- 42:03>> No, you didn't.
- 42:04>> Yes, we did.
- 42:04>> Cuz I did not
- 42:05>> cars. Your car was even repoed, buddy.
- 42:08I'm telling I'm not trying to scare you
- 42:09here, but
- 42:10>> That's actually absolutely what you're
- 42:11trying to do.
- 42:12>> Well, I'm not.
- 42:13>> You said it the best, follow the money.
- 42:15We did that. It led right into your
- 42:17single wide. Just telling you.
- 42:19>> Using Ross's own words against him,
- 42:22Detective Duncan and Spingola followed
- 42:24the money and ironically it led
- 42:26detectives straight back to him. For the
- 42:29first time, Ross begins to realize he
- 42:32and Amy may not be as untouchable as
- 42:34they once believed. But even then, he's
- 42:36convinced detectives still don't have
- 42:38enough to secure a conviction and he's
- 42:40about to show them just how confident he
- 42:43really is.
- 42:44>> Let's just play this out in a
- 42:45hypothetical, right?
- 42:47>> Right.
- 42:48>> Let's say a deal
- 42:50happens.
- 42:50>> Right.
- 42:52>> What kind of deal would that be?
- 42:54>> I don't know, Ross. Here's Okay, but
- 42:56here's the deal. With That's a very bad
- 42:58analogy. Here's the thing, sir. Without
- 43:00a deal,
- 43:02there's no hope. Do you believe that? I
- 43:03want you to go and you know, really
- 43:04think about this.
- 43:05>> I I understand that, but my my point
- 43:07being is you guys just brought up my
- 43:09kids.
- 43:09>> Right.
- 43:09>> My wife.
- 43:10>> Right.
- 43:10>> My family.
- 43:11>> Right.
- 43:11>> Mine is going to be
- 43:13better than Amy's cuz I came to the
- 43:15trough first, right?
- 43:16>> Right.
- 43:16>> So, prison time,
- 43:18no matter what,
- 43:20Amy, prison time, no matter what.
- 43:24So, now you're talking about both of us
- 43:25are going to prison.
- 43:27Um
- 43:29my my three kids in here,
- 43:33they grew up without a father and a
- 43:34mother. Granted, my mother would be more
- 43:36than willing to take them. I understand
- 43:38that.
- 43:38>> We're not the ones who put y'all in this
- 43:40predicament, okay? Y'all made a decision
- 43:42for whatever reason, okay, to do what
- 43:44y'all did.
- 43:45>> we made a decision. You passed the law.
- 43:47>> I understand it. We make decisions at
- 43:50under stress.
- 43:51>> now you have Now, I I you know, eight
- 43:53years whatever,
- 43:54now you're going to have to deal with
- 43:55the consequences.
- 43:56>> For
- 43:58almost 10 years now, no one has found
- 44:01anything
- 44:03enough to come [snorts] down here and
- 44:04bother me
- 44:06or my wife or my family.
- 44:09For 8 years, nothing's been enough to
- 44:10come down here, but now all of a sudden,
- 44:128 years later,
- 44:14there's enough evidence to come bother
- 44:15me.
- 44:16Why or how?
- 44:17>> And we found
- 44:18the missing pieces.
- 44:20>> Okay.
- 44:20>> Okay, and I just showed you
- 44:21>> Why Why is it Why is it 8 years later
- 44:25the missing pieces have just finally
- 44:27quote unquote fallen in their place?
- 44:29>> I can't answer that because I wasn't I
- 44:31wasn't the ones that was investigating
- 44:32this case before I got it.
- 44:34>> So, tell me where they fell for sure.
- 44:36>> I don't know.
- 44:37>> I can't plead guilty to something that
- 44:39>> Ross, don't go there. Don't go there
- 44:40anymore, please.
- 44:41>> I have a lot of respect for you.
- 44:43>> All right.
- 44:43>> Don't go there anymore.
- 44:45>> All right. I won't say anything.
- 44:46>> and you did yours. You understand it?
- 44:48>> Yep.
- 44:48>> That's it. That's the bottom line. No
- 44:50more bull
- 44:52>> All right. I won't
- 44:53>> Then if if if that is where we are,
- 44:55then at this juncture, it is time for me
- 44:58to hop out of the truck, and I probably
- 44:59will be contacting an attorney.
- 45:01>> All right. You're free to go. Okay.
- 45:03>> Yep.
- 45:03>> You guys have a
- 45:05nice drive back to Anderson.
- 45:08>> Despite Ross still refusing to admit to
- 45:11the horrific crime he and Amy committed,
- 45:13Duncan and Spingola no longer need his
- 45:16confession. The evidence speaks for
- 45:18itself. Later that day, both Amy and
- 45:21Ross are arrested and transported to the
- 45:23Anderson County Detention Center, where
- 45:24they are charged with four counts of
- 45:26murder. Based on eight years of
- 45:28findings, this is what investigators
- 45:30believe happened on the night of October
- 45:3331st, 2015. Around 11:00 p.m. that
- 45:37night, Amy and Ross walked the short
- 45:39distance from their trailer to the Scott
- 45:41family home. Because they were family,
- 45:43detectives believe they were able to
- 45:45enter the house without forcing their
- 45:46way inside. Investigators believe Mike
- 45:49Scott was attacked first before he had a
- 45:51chance to defend himself. Kathy Scott,
- 45:54Barbara Scott, and Violet Taylor all
- 45:56suffered slash wounds, which
- 45:58investigators concluded were the fatal
- 46:00injuries. After they had already died,
- 46:03each victim was then shot in the head.
- 46:07Detectives believe Amy and [music] Ross
- 46:09then took the cash Mike kept inside the
- 46:11home before leaving the scene. Two days
- 46:13after the murder, Amy returned to the
- 46:15house and placed the 911 call reporting
- 46:18she had discovered the bodies. In
- 46:20February 2026, Amy is found guilty on
- 46:24all four counts of murder and sentenced
- 46:26to four life sentences. As of August
- 46:292026, Ross remains behind bars awaiting
- 46:32trial. If convicted, he too could
- 46:35receive four life sentences, one for
- 46:38each victim.
