- 0:00has this ever happened to you i'm great
- 0:03friends with matt
- 0:04matt is awesome best friendship ever
- 0:07dude like i would vouch for him
- 0:09no matter what did you know that max
- 0:11stole a pen
- 0:13matt is a thief wait what
- 0:16matt but but matt is great like
- 0:20awesome couldn't have
- 0:23stolen a pen no
- 0:27what you're experiencing is cognitive
- 0:29dissonance
- 0:30it means you had certain beliefs and
- 0:32thoughts and attitudes before
- 0:34and then you get a new set of
- 0:36information that is against what you
- 0:38have been believing before
- 0:39so for example matt is a great person
- 0:42matt is a thief
- 0:44right this is a very stressful and
- 0:46uncomfortable feeling
- 0:48so you might be starting to say things
- 0:50or to think about things
- 0:52that can change that new information or
- 0:54to justify this new information
- 0:57and put all of your thoughts and ideas
- 0:58in line things like this
- 1:01if if matt is a thief then what about
- 1:0410 years of me trusting him and all this
- 1:06friendship
- 1:08i guess i can't be friends with him
- 1:09anymore but that also means i will lose
- 1:12all of our friends that we have in
- 1:13common oh man
- 1:16so what we do sometimes in these kind of
- 1:18instances is to do motivated reasoning
- 1:21which means coming up with reasons to
- 1:23discount the new information
- 1:26you know what i think matt was just
- 1:27trying to borrow a pen i don't think he
- 1:29stole the pen
- 1:30i think this was matt's own pen even if
- 1:33he did
- 1:33i bet the writing thing was so important
- 1:36that he should have stolen the pen
- 1:38you know what matt good job you should
- 1:40steal that pen
- 1:41you know what this is all fake news matt
- 1:43would never steal a pen
- 1:45so this is how motivated reasoning might
- 1:47sound you might do motivated reasoning
- 1:49for some really simple things so for
- 1:51example
- 1:52if you really want to eat a bar of
- 1:54chocolate and you know
- 1:56chocolate is bad for your teeth and
- 1:58you're the one that got all the jeans
- 1:59with the cavities and your brother is
- 2:01the one with the good teeth jeans
- 2:03then maybe you will start saying hey you
- 2:05know what chocolate brings happiness
- 2:07and happiness brings health so i'm
- 2:10actually eating healthy
- 2:12food in some ways but you could also be
- 2:15doing motivated reasoning for things
- 2:16that are
- 2:17more important so for example if you're
- 2:20skeptic towards vaccines
- 2:22but you also get some new evidence or
- 2:24information that
- 2:26vaccines actually don't cause autism
- 2:28then you might become
- 2:30defensive and you try to say for example
- 2:33you know this evidence might not be
- 2:35correct or might not be accurate
- 2:37or find other problems with them because
- 2:39you really care about the community that
- 2:41you're in the community that thinks the
- 2:43same thing
- 2:43as you do or you might still be really
- 2:46worried about your children or many
- 2:47other reasons
- 2:49so what's really important about
- 2:50motivated reasoning is to know
- 2:52when you're doing motivated reasoning
- 2:54and why you are doing it
