Full transcript
- 0:00It's a scripture. This is the day that
- 0:02the Lord has made.
- 0:04You know, I will rejoice and and be glad
- 0:06in it.
- 0:07You know, and
- 0:08that became a song.
- 0:10You know, learned that as a kid. This is
- 0:13the day. This is the day that the Lord
- 0:16has made. You know, and singing that
- 0:18song, right? Then when I was little, I
- 0:21learned it a different way. Este es el
- 0:23dia. Este es el dia que hizo Jehova.
- 0:26Come on, everybody.
- 0:28All right.
- 0:30Well, we truly thank the Lord.
- 0:32Uh we know that everybody's not here
- 0:33because there are some that are at uh
- 0:36general conference.
- 0:38Like uh Pastor Mother tonight and some
- 0:40others.
- 0:42Uh keep them in prayer.

- 0:51The announcements, [music]
- 0:53uh we encourage all who are available
- 0:55to join
- 0:57in the sanctuary every Tuesday 5:30 p.m.
- 1:01for corporate prayer.
- 1:04I was feeling a little bit out of it
- 1:05yesterday because
- 1:07I didn't come to uh corporate prayer. My
- 1:09first one I didn't come to, but
- 1:12I was at the prison speaking.
- 1:15So, you can't be everywhere at once.
- 1:18You know,
- 1:19got to go where the Lord tells you to go
- 1:20and where you're going to be used,
- 1:21right?

- 2:12revival.
- 2:14With Reverend White.
- 2:17Right? One of our own.
- 2:19Coming home.
- 2:21We're excited for revival
- 2:23services with Reverend Xavier White
- 2:26happening October 18th through the 20th
- 2:30and the 25th and 26th.
- 2:32So, mark those down.
- 2:34Invite someone. Very important. Invite
- 2:37someone to be your guest and come
- 2:40expecting a dynamic move of God.
- 2:45Come expecting.
- 2:49You never know if the Lord's going to
- 2:50move on your guest or to move on you,
- 2:53but there's going to be a move of the
- 2:54Lord.
- 2:55You know,
- 2:57and
- 2:58uh right now we want to go to the Lord
- 3:00in prayer
- 3:02for all of our needs.
- 3:04Uh we do have an urgent prayer from
- 3:06sister Sherry Spiegel
- 3:08for Miguel Gonzalez.
- 3:11Uh if anybody else has a prayer request,
- 3:16put your hand up so
- 3:18you know, the Lord knows.
- 3:20The Lord can meet that need in Jesus'
- 3:22name.
- 3:24You know, miracles done in the name of
- 3:26Jesus. Healing done in the name of
- 3:28Jesus. All over this house, all over our
- 3:31hearts, our minds.
- 3:33We just want to be healed.
- 3:35Cuz when you get healed, that's when you
- 3:37start getting that joy.
- 3:39So, if you don't have that joy, you're
- 3:41just sitting there like
- 3:46Put it up in prayer
- 3:48that the Lord brings that joy back.
- 3:49Whatever needs to be healed, that it
- 3:51gets healed so that you can have that
- 3:54joy again.
- 3:55So that you can say, "You know what?
- 3:57This is the day
- 3:59that the Lord has made."
- 4:01So if you wouldn't mind standing,
- 4:02please,
- 4:04as we go to as we go to the Lord in
- 4:06prayer.
- 4:08Lord Jesus, we thank you right now,
- 4:10Father.
- 4:40Heal here tonight, Lord,
- 4:41in your precious name, Jesus.
- 4:43We thank you, Lord.
- 4:45Amen. Amen.
- 4:48Amen.
- 4:49Now, we have a

- 9:37are
- 9:42>> [singing]
- 9:45>> Hallelujah.
- 9:59He alone is worthy of our praise.
- 10:05One of the lines in that song said,
- 10:08"You're worthy of our praise forever."
- 10:10And it reminded me of the scripture,
- 10:15"His mercy endures forever."
- 10:18And if His mercy endures forever,
- 10:21we should be able to praise Him forever.
- 10:28I want to thank Brother Albus for this
- 10:29opportunity to
- 10:32come speak this evening.
- 10:35I don't take it lightly. In fact,
- 10:38for some reason this evening I'm a
- 10:39little bit nervous,
- 10:41more so than normal.
- 10:43Um
- 10:47what I have to share
- 10:49isn't anything new.
- 10:51It's nothing special. I'm not going to
- 10:54um
- 10:56deliver something that you haven't heard
- 10:58before, but it's just a simple
- 11:01reminder. I want to encourage someone
- 11:03this evening.
- 11:06I want to thank also Brother Dylan for
- 11:09all that he invested in all the
- 11:11ministers here
- 11:12at Apostolic Life.
- 11:14We are very blessed
- 11:16to have a man like Brother Dylan that
- 11:19will take time
- 11:21to invest in in us
- 11:24to
- 11:27pull us to the side and critique when we
- 11:28need that critique. Because
- 11:32if no one tells us
- 11:34the things that we need to fix, we'll
- 11:35come up here and
- 11:38not be as good as what we could be. So,
- 11:40brother Dylan, I do appreciate that.
- 11:42I also want to give honor to my wife.
- 11:47She is my rock.
- 11:49No pun intended, but I do lean on her a
- 11:51lot.
- 11:54And I appreciate you.
- 11:58You can be seated. I'm going to start
- 12:00with a story this evening.
- 12:02Um
- 12:05If I say the name Billy Graham, most
- 12:07people know who I'm talking about.
- 12:09They know the crusades. They know the
- 12:11stadiums.
- 12:13They know the simple invitation that he
- 12:15gave.
- 12:17Come to Jesus.
- 12:19For decades, he stood in front of many
- 12:20many many people, millions.
- 12:23Presidents even asked for him.
- 12:26Crowds waited to hear his voice.
- 12:28If there was
- 12:30a public preacher
- 12:33that
- 12:35I excuse me, a public picture of a
- 12:37strong preacher in America,
- 12:39most Christians would think of Billy
- 12:42Graham.
- 12:45Then life changed.
- 12:47Age caught up with him.
- 12:49His health changed. Parkinson's-like
- 12:51symptoms,
- 12:53fractures,
- 12:55failing eyesight,
- 12:57and weariness settled in.
- 13:00By the time he wrote his last book,
- 13:01Nearing Home, he said it plainly.
- 13:05He truthfully did not like growing
- 13:07older.
- 13:09He had trouble getting up from a chair.
- 13:11He needed help putting on his shoes.
- 13:14The man that crossed many oceans to
- 13:17preach the gospel
- 13:19now seldom left his home in North
- 13:21Carolina.
- 13:23That did not mean that God was finished
- 13:25with him.
- 13:26His son Franklin
- 13:29stood beside him at the podium when he
- 13:30could no longer stand.
- 13:35A team carried what he could no longer
- 13:36carry.
- 13:39The gospel kept going.
- 13:41The light did not go out because the man
- 13:44who first held it grew faint.
- 13:55Here is what family
- 13:57and that team understood.
- 13:59He was not less called because he needed
- 14:01help.
- 14:05He was not less useful because someone
- 14:08else had to walk him to the microphone.
- 14:12His strength changed, his value didn't.
- 14:18Hold that picture.
- 14:21Because when we come to 2 Samuel later,
- 14:25we will meet a David that we normally
- 14:27don't preach about.
- 14:30You see, we know the young David. We
- 14:31know the shepherd boy.
- 14:33We know the giant killer.
- 14:36But 2 Samuel 21 introduces us to a David
- 14:41who needs someone else to step in.
- 14:43You see, the story we know. Most of us
- 14:46know the story. Even people who have
- 14:49hardly read the Bible,
- 14:51they know the names.
- 14:53David
- 14:54and Goliath.
- 14:56We know about the valley.
- 14:58We know about the
- 14:59Philistine champion.
- 15:01We know about the frightened army.
- 15:05We know about the shepherd.
- 15:07We know about the sling.
- 15:09And we know
- 15:10about the stone.
- 15:13But listen to what David has to say in 1
- 15:15Samuel 17.
- 15:26>> And David said unto Saul, "Thy servant
- 15:28kept his father's sheep, and there came
- 15:30a lion and a bear, and took a lamb out
- 15:33of the flock.
- 15:39And I went out after him, and smote him,
- 15:41and delivered it out of his mouth. And
- 15:43when he arose against me, I caught him
- 15:45by his beard, and smote him, and slew
- 15:48him.
- 15:53The servant Thy servant slew both the
- 15:55lion and the bear,
- 15:56and this uncircumcised Philistine shall
- 15:59be as one of them, seeing that he has
- 16:01defied the armies of the living God."
- 16:05David said, moreover, "The Lord that
- 16:07delivered me out of the paw of the lion,
- 16:09and out of the paw of the bear, he will
- 16:11deliver me out of the hand of this
- 16:13Philistine." And Saul said unto David,
- 16:16"Go, and the Lord be with thee."
- 16:21Verse 45 says, "Then David said to the
- 16:24Philistine,
- 16:25Thou comest to me with a sword and a
- 16:27spear,
- 16:29and with a shield, but I come to thee in
- 16:31the name of the Lord of host, the God of
- 16:34the armies of Israel, whom thou hast
- 16:37defied.
- 16:39This day the Lord will deliver unto thee
- 16:41in my hand, and I will smite thee, and
- 16:44take thine head from thee, and I will
- 16:45give the carcasses of the host of the
- 16:47Philistines this day unto the fowls of
- 16:50the air, and the wild beast of the
- 16:53earth, that all the earth may know that
- 16:55there is a God in Israel.
- 16:59And all this assembly shall know that
- 17:00the Lord saveth not with a sword and
- 17:03spear, for the battle is the Lord's, and
- 17:06he will give you into our hands."
- 17:10For the dealing with you, pray.
- 17:31>> Thank you.
- 17:33In verse 47, David declares that the
- 17:36battle is the Lord's and he will give
- 17:38you into our hands.
- 17:41We love that story. We preach that
- 17:43story. We teach our children that story.
- 17:48But the Bible does not end the story of
- 17:50Israelite Israel's battles
- 17:53with the warriors of Gath
- 17:55in 1 Samuel 17.
- 17:57Tonight, for just a few moments,
- 18:02I want to talk about the giants after
- 18:05Goliath. The giants after Goliath.
- 18:13You see, Goliath fell.
- 18:15But Goliath was not the last
- 18:17overwhelming enemy that Israel would
- 18:20face.
- 18:22David eventually became king. He fought
- 18:24many battles. He experienced great
- 18:26victories.
- 18:29He experienced painful failures.
- 18:32In a later biblical account, the
- 18:34Philistines come again.
- 18:36And in 2 Samuel
- 18:38chapter 21 verse 15, it says,
- 18:44"Moreover, the Philistines had yet war
- 18:46again with Israel.
- 18:48And David went down
- 18:50and his his servants with him and fought
- 18:53against the Philistines, and David waxed
- 18:56faint.
- 18:59And Ishbi-Benob,
- 19:02which was the sons of the giant, the
- 19:04weight of the whole spear weighed 300
- 19:07shekels of brass in weight.
- 19:10He being girded with a new sword thought
- 19:13to have
- 19:14slain David.
- 19:17But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah,
- 19:19succored him and smote the Philistine
- 19:21and killed him.
- 19:23Then the men of David sware unto him,
- 19:25saying, Thou shalt go no more out with
- 19:28this to battle, that thou quench not the
- 19:31light of Israel.
- 19:35You see,
- 19:37there were some words in there that
- 19:39sometimes I think we overlook about
- 19:41David.
- 19:42It says, David waxed faint.
- 19:45He became exhausted.
- 19:48And this isn't the picture that we
- 19:49normally care carry about David. We
- 19:52always talk about the giant killer.
- 19:59But the passage continues in 2 Samuel
- 20:0121:18, and it says, And it came to pass
- 20:04after this, there was a battle with the
- 20:06Philistines at Gob, and Sibbechai, the
- 20:09Hushathite, slew Saph, which was one of
- 20:12the sons
- 20:13of the giant. There was another battle.
- 20:17There was another warrior.
- 20:19Then another servant steps forward.
- 20:23Then another battle at Gath. Verse 20
- 20:25says,
- 20:27And there was yet a battle in Gath,
- 20:30where there was a man of great stature,
- 20:32who he had on every hand six fingers, on
- 20:36every foot six toes, four and 20
- 20:40in number.
- 20:42And he also was born to the giant.
- 20:46Verse 21 states, And when he defied
- 20:49Israel, Jonathan, the son of Shammah,
- 20:52the brother of David, slew him.
- 20:56Then in verse 22 we read, These four
- 20:58were born to the giant in Gath and fell
- 21:01by the hand of David and the hand
- 21:05of his servants.
- 21:07You see, the Hebrew expression here
- 21:09points to the descendants of Rapha, the
- 21:11giant clan that was in Gath. So, there
- 21:14was giants that lived
- 21:17in Gath.
- 21:19So, something powerful has happened.
- 21:21Goliath wasn't the only giant that
- 21:24Israel would have to face.
- 21:28But, David
- 21:30was no longer the only one standing. You
- 21:32see in 1 Samuel
- 21:34we read of a terrified army.
- 21:37An army who would not go
- 21:40to meet Goliath in the field.
- 21:43But, something happened between 1 Samuel
- 21:45and 2 Samuel to where
- 21:49David's men
- 21:50learned something.
- 21:55You see another one victory
- 21:58does not mean there will not be another
- 22:00battle.
- 22:02Some of us have built the expectation
- 22:04that
- 22:05if God gives us one great victory, we
- 22:07should never struggle again.
- 22:13Scripture never promises that.
- 22:15You can experience
- 22:17a breakthrough
- 22:19and still face another season of
- 22:20pressure pressure.
- 22:22You can receive an answered prayer and
- 22:25later
- 22:26have another prayer that needs
- 22:27answering.
- 22:31You can overcome one temptation and yet
- 22:34face another.
- 22:35You can
- 22:37survive one difficult season
- 22:40and face another.
- 22:43You can walk through grief
- 22:46and still have difficult days later.
- 22:51Goliath fell
- 22:53and Israel
- 22:55still faced battles.
- 22:57You see that doesn't erase what God did
- 22:59in 1 Samuel.
- 23:01It just simply meant the story wasn't
- 23:02over.
- 23:04Jesus said in John 16:33,
- 23:07"These things I have spoken unto you
- 23:11that in me you may have peace.
- 23:14In the world you shall have tribulation,
- 23:16but be
- 23:17of good cheer. I have overcome the
- 23:20world."
- 23:21Jesus did not
- 23:24promise the absence of trouble.
- 23:26He simply promised that trouble would
- 23:29not have the final word.
- 23:31Another battle does not mean yesterday's
- 23:35victory was false.
- 23:37Another trial does not mean that God has
- 23:39abandoned you.
- 23:41Today's struggle doesn't erase
- 23:44yesterday's faithfulness.
- 23:47Sometimes I've asked myself the
- 23:49question, "Why am I fighting again?"
- 23:54Only
- 23:55to remember the question I should be
- 23:57asking myself was,
- 24:00"Who was faithful before me?"
- 24:03You see, the God David trusted in 1
- 24:05Samuel
- 24:07was still the God in 2 Samuel.
- 24:10David's circumstances may have changed.
- 24:12David's strength may have changed. The
- 24:15battles may have changed, but God didn't
- 24:18change.
- 24:19Hebrews says, "Jesus Christ the same
- 24:22yesterday, today, and forever."
- 24:25You see, our confidence cannot
- 24:28rest
- 24:30in not having battles, in the absence of
- 24:32battles. Our confidence has to rest in
- 24:35the faithfulness of God.
- 24:38David grew tired.
- 24:39We grow tired, but God never grows
- 24:42tired.
- 24:45Remember, David waxed faint. He got
- 24:49tired.
- 24:50This is David, the shepherd, the
- 24:52psalmist, the warrior, the king,
- 24:54the man who stood in front of Goliath?
- 24:57And scripture says David became
- 24:59exhausted.
- 25:02I'm thankful the Bible tells us that
- 25:04because sometimes
- 25:07us church people
- 25:10we unintentionally create the impression
- 25:12that strong faith means we're never
- 25:14tired.
- 25:15That we're never discouraged.
- 25:17That we're never overwhelmed.
- 25:19That we're never in need of help.
- 25:22That's not biblical.
- 25:25Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold up
- 25:27his hands.
- 25:29The Bible tells us Elijah became
- 25:30exhausted.
- 25:32Paul spoke openly about weakness.
- 25:35Even Jesus
- 25:37in his humanity
- 25:39sat beside Jacob's well because
- 25:42he was weary
- 25:44from the journey.
- 25:46John 4:6 says, "Jesus therefore being
- 25:49weary with his journey
- 25:52sat thus on the well."
- 25:55You see, being tired does not
- 25:57automatically mean that you're
- 25:59faithless.
- 26:01Sometimes you're tired because you've
- 26:02been carrying responsibility.
- 26:04Sometimes you're tired because you've
- 26:06been fighting.
- 26:08Sometimes you're tired because life
- 26:10well, it's been heavy.
- 26:13And sometimes you're tired just because
- 26:15we're human.
- 26:17David reaches a moment where the man who
- 26:19once rescued Israel needs someone to
- 26:21rescue him.
- 26:27Ish-bosheth
- 26:28intends to kill David. But Abishai
- 26:31comes.
- 26:34David does not have to recreate
- 26:37First Samuel.
- 26:39He doesn't have to reach into a bag and
- 26:41produce another stone.
- 26:43He doesn't have to prove that he's still
- 26:45the young shepherd in the valley.
- 26:48Abishai comes.
- 26:50Sometimes
- 26:52the answer that sends into your life is
- 26:55another person.
- 26:57Sometimes God sends a brother
- 27:00or a sister.
- 27:02Sometimes God sends your pastor.
- 27:05Sometimes God sends another believer.
- 27:09Sometimes God sends someone who simply
- 27:11says,
- 27:13"You don't have to carry this
- 27:16by yourself."
- 27:19Afterward, David's men tell him, "Thou
- 27:21shalt not go out with us into battle
- 27:23that thou quench not the light of
- 27:25Israel."
- 27:31They understood something.
- 27:33David still mattered when David couldn't
- 27:36fight.
- 27:40Our limitations do not make us
- 27:42worthless. Our weakness does not erase
- 27:45our value.
- 27:46Needing help does not mean that God is
- 27:49finished with you.
- 27:50Maybe we can't do everything we once
- 27:52did. I can tell you I can't do
- 27:55everything I once did.
- 27:57But that does not mean that God has
- 27:59stopped using us.
- 28:02Sometimes
- 28:04we need to remember
- 28:06the correct response to a tired saint
- 28:09saint is not try harder.
- 28:12Sometimes it's, "Let me stand beside
- 28:15you.
- 28:16Let me pray with you.
- 28:18Let me help carry this."
- 28:20David needed a Abishai.
- 28:23There's no shame in that.
- 28:25You do not have to be David somebody's
- 28:28David every single day.
- 28:31Sometimes you need an Abishai.
- 28:35And sometimes
- 28:37God calls you
- 28:39to be Abishai.
- 28:41You see, David was not the only one
- 28:43standing.
- 28:45Years earlier, one young man stepped
- 28:47toward Goliath while an army watched.
- 28:50But now the scene has been reversed.
- 28:54Ishbi-Benob comes,
- 28:56Abishai stands.
- 28:58Saph comes, Sibbechai stands. Another
- 29:01warrior,
- 29:03Elhanan stands. The warrior at Gath
- 29:06defies Israel, Jonathan stands.
- 29:10David is not the only one standing.
- 29:14Now we The Bible doesn't tell us that
- 29:16David personally trained every one of
- 29:18these
- 29:19men to fight giants.
- 29:22But they were David's men. They did
- 29:25fight beside him. They did serve beside
- 29:28him.
- 29:29And something
- 29:31is different from Samuel 17, 1 Samuel.
- 29:36David's servants now in 2 Samuel are
- 29:39stepping forward, too.
- 29:41And I think there's a word in that for
- 29:43us tonight because Christianity was
- 29:46never supposed to be
- 29:47and is never intended to be a spectator
- 29:50sport.
- 29:54Church is not one person praying while
- 29:55everyone watches.
- 29:57It's not one person believing while
- 30:00everyone else watches. It's not one
- 30:02person carrying every burden while
- 30:04everyone watches. God wants a church
- 30:07full of believers who know how to stand.
- 30:10Brother Robin shouldn't be the only one
- 30:12who knows how to pray.
- 30:15Brother Tipton and his team shouldn't be
- 30:17the only ones that know how to worship.
- 30:20Sister Brittany shouldn't be the only
- 30:22one teaching our children
- 30:24about Jesus.
- 30:27Those that gather on Tuesday night
- 30:29should not be the only people praying
- 30:31for the sick.
- 30:34We are the church.
- 30:37Every one of us has a place. Every one
- 30:40of us can and pray. Every one of us can
- 30:42encourage. We can serve.
- 30:45We can stand beside someone.
- 30:48Most people know David.
- 30:50Far fewer know Sibbecai.
- 30:53Most people know Goliath.
- 30:56Far fewer know Ishbi-Benob.
- 30:59But God knew their names. God saw their
- 31:01faithfulness.
- 31:03We don't have to be faithful to be
- 31:04famous.
- 31:07We don't need a platform to pray.
- 31:09We don't need a microphone to encourage
- 31:11someone.
- 31:13You don't need a title to be useful to
- 31:16God.
- 31:18We simply
- 31:19need to remember what God has already
- 31:21done.
- 31:24Because that's the answer why David was
- 31:27able to stand in front of Goliath in 1
- 31:29Samuel.
- 31:30Because before Goliath, there had been a
- 31:32lion. Before Goliath, there had been a
- 31:34bear.
- 31:35David remembered.
- 31:39Because he said to Saul, "Thy servant
- 31:40kept his father's sheep. And there came
- 31:43a lion and a bear and a lamb
- 31:45and took a lamb out of the flock. And I
- 31:47went after him and smote him and
- 31:49delivered it out of his mouth.
- 31:52The ser- The servant slew both the lion
- 31:55and the bear. But David said,
- 31:59"Moreover, the Lord that delivered me
- 32:02out of the paw of the lion, out of the
- 32:04paw of the bear, he will deliver me out
- 32:07of the hand of the Philistine."
- 32:10David's confident
- 32:11was not that he killed the lion.
- 32:14His confidence was the Lord delivered
- 32:17me.
- 32:18David remembered what God had done.
- 32:21We need that same kind of memory.
- 32:27Sometimes fear grows because our memory
- 32:30becomes selective.
- 32:35We remember the disappointment.
- 32:38We remember the hurt.
- 32:41We remember the unanswered questions.
- 32:45We remembered when everything went
- 32:46wrong.
- 32:49But do we remember what God has done?
- 32:52Do you remember the prayer that he
- 32:54answered?
- 32:55Do we remember the door that he opened
- 32:57for us?
- 33:00Do we remember
- 33:01where he found us?
- 33:04What he forgave us from?
- 33:06What he restored unto us?
- 33:10What he carried us through?
- 33:14How about the peace that he gives us?
- 33:18Psalm 78:4 says, "We will not hide them
- 33:21from our children, showing the
- 33:23generation to come the praises of the
- 33:25Lord and his strength and his wonderful
- 33:28works that he has done."
- 33:30Then verse seven tells us why.
- 33:32That they may set their hope in God
- 33:35and not forget
- 33:37the works of God
- 33:39but keep his commandments.
- 33:43You see, our testimony was never
- 33:45supposed to
- 33:46end
- 33:48with us.
- 33:51Us as parents, we need to tell our
- 33:52children what God has done.
- 33:54Grandparents, you need to tell your
- 33:56grandchildren.
- 33:58Older saints,
- 33:59tell young believers.
- 34:02Do not pretend that you were always
- 34:04strong.
- 34:05Tell them the truth.
- 34:08I was afraid, too.
- 34:10I had questions.
- 34:12I cried.
- 34:15I did not always know what God was
- 34:17doing.
- 34:18But God kept me.
- 34:22That prayer took longer than I expected.
- 34:26But God was faithful.
- 34:29I stumbled.
- 34:31But God was faithful.
- 34:34I didn't know how I was going to make
- 34:35it.
- 34:37But God was faithful.
- 34:41Some of our young
- 34:43kids need to hear us older folks say,
- 34:46"I've seen God be faithful before time
- 34:50and time again."
- 34:52You see, our faithfulness may come
- 34:54because someone else's courage.
- 34:58David had no idea in 1 Samuel 17
- 35:03how many generations
- 35:06would hear his story.
- 35:09And this day we still
- 35:11tell the story of David and Goliath.
- 35:17Think about that.
- 35:18All these generations later
- 35:21we're still telling the story.
- 35:23You see, he was simply being faithful in
- 35:25the moment.
- 35:27He did not walk
- 35:30into that valley trying to be famous.
- 35:36We need to be faithful.
- 35:38Who will be telling your story
- 35:40generations to come?
- 35:44We need to worship when life is
- 35:45difficult.
- 35:48We need to forgive.
- 35:50We need to serve.
- 35:53We need to live
- 35:56what we believe.
- 35:59Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, "Let your
- 36:02light so shine before men that they may
- 36:06see your good works and glorify your
- 36:08Father which is in heaven."
- 36:11Notice where the glory goes.
- 36:15To our Father in heaven.
- 36:17This is what Christian influence should
- 36:19do.
- 36:20Our life should cause someone else to
- 36:23think more highly of Jesus.
- 36:26Our children are watching.
- 36:29Young believers are watching.
- 36:32People around you
- 36:34are watching.
- 36:36They may never tell you,
- 36:38but one day, when they're standing in
- 36:40their own difficult place,
- 36:42they may remember how you walked through
- 36:45yours.
- 36:46Your faithfulness today
- 36:49may become someone's courage tomorrow.
- 36:54You see, David is not the final
- 36:56champion.
- 36:58Because if we
- 37:00stop right here, we can accidentally
- 37:02turn Christianity into
- 37:05David was brave, go be brave.
- 37:08But that's not the gospel.
- 37:10David became tired. He needed Abishag.
- 37:14David
- 37:16eventually died.
- 37:18David was a great king,
- 37:20but he was not the final king.
- 37:23Jesus is repeatedly [clears throat]
- 37:25identified in the New Testament as the
- 37:28son of David.
- 37:30David defeated Goliath.
- 37:34Jesus confronted enemies far greater.
- 37:37Our deepest problem is sin.
- 37:41Our greatest enemy includes death and
- 37:42the devil.
- 37:44And we can never defeat those enemies by
- 37:46ourself.
- 37:48We cannot pray enough to erase our sin.
- 37:51We cannot behave well enough to redeem
- 37:53ourself. We cannot become strong enough
- 37:55to conquer death. We need a savior.
- 38:00And Jesus came to be that. Colossians
- 38:032:15 says,
- 38:05"Having spoiled principalities and
- 38:07powers, he made a show of them openly,
- 38:09triumphing triumphant"
- 38:12that word over them.
- 38:15Christ disarmed the powers. And in
- 38:16Hebrews, he says, "For as much then as
- 38:19the children are partakers of flesh and
- 38:21blood, he himself likewise took part the
- 38:24same, that through death he may destroy
- 38:26them that had power of death, that is
- 38:30the devil.
- 38:32And deliver them who through fear of
- 38:34death were all their lifetime subject to
- 38:37bondage. You see, Jesus entered a battle
- 38:40that we could never win for ourself.
- 38:43He bore our sin, he died, he was buried,
- 38:47we know he rose on the third day. That
- 38:49is where we get our confidence. We're
- 38:51not saved because we came brave.
- 38:54We're saved because Jesus saves.
- 38:57We're not redeemed because we finally
- 38:59became strong enough. We're redeemed
- 39:01because of what Christ has done for us.
- 39:05We're not fighting to earn salvation.
- 39:09You're not fighting to make Jesus king.
- 39:11He's already king.
- 39:13The resurrection is not something that
- 39:15we are hoping might happen, it's already
- 39:18happened. The tomb is empty.
- 39:21That does not mean that Christians never
- 39:23suffer.
- 39:30It does not mean that every circumstance
- 39:31becomes easy.
- 39:33But it does mean suffering does not have
- 39:35the final word.
- 39:37Death does not have the final word. The
- 39:40devil does not have the final word.
- 39:43Jesus does.
- 39:45We can still have hope.
- 39:49There are tired people
- 39:51in the church.
- 39:54You love God,
- 39:55but you're tired. You believe,
- 39:58but you're tired. You have prayed,
- 40:02but you're still tired.
- 40:04You have remained faithful,
- 40:07but you're still tired.
- 40:09Our hope is not in the ability to stay
- 40:12strong forever. Our hope is in Jesus.
- 40:17David needed someone him and maybe today
- 40:20one of us needs someone beside us.
- 40:23There's nothing unspiritual about saying
- 40:26pray for me.
- 40:28There's nothing shameful about saying
- 40:31I need help.
- 40:33Galatians 6:2 says, "Bear you one
- 40:35another's burdens
- 40:37and so fulfill the law of Christ."
- 40:41Sometimes you're David. Sometimes you're
- 40:44Abishai.
- 40:45Sometimes you need someone to stand with
- 40:47you.
- 40:48And sometimes you're the person that God
- 40:51sends to stand next to someone.
- 40:55That is what the church is. We rejoice
- 40:58together.
- 40:59We mourn together. We pray together. We
- 41:02worship together.
- 41:04We carry one another's burdens together.
- 41:08So tonight I want to ask you, what is in
- 41:10front of you?
- 41:13Not every problem is a Goliath.
- 41:15The Bible does not teach us to call
- 41:17every inconvenience a giant.
- 41:21But every believer will face places
- 41:25where faith is required.
- 41:29Maybe temptation keeps returning.
- 41:31Maybe fear has controlled our thinking.
- 41:34Maybe that bitterness is growing.
- 41:38Maybe grief has us exhausted.
- 41:41Maybe forgiveness has become difficult.
- 41:47Maybe you know something God has already
- 41:49told you to do.
- 41:52And you've been too afraid to obey it.
- 41:55Maybe prayer has slowly disappeared from
- 41:57your life.
- 41:59Maybe you've been trying to carry
- 42:01something alone.
- 42:03Maybe someone in your family desperately
- 42:05needs to see a genuine Christian
- 42:09living life in front of them.
- 42:13Whatever is before you, remember you do
- 42:16not have to become a David.
- 42:18You have Jesus. You do not need a
- 42:21legendary moment. You need faithful
- 42:23obedience.
- 42:24We pray today, we forgive today, we
- 42:26repent today, we ask for help today, we
- 42:29open our Bible today, we take the next
- 42:31step today.
- 42:32Sometimes faith looks dramatic.
- 42:36And sometimes faith looks like getting
- 42:38up tomorrow and being faithful one more
- 42:40day.
- 42:42Sometimes faith happens on a
- 42:43battlefield.
- 42:45Sometimes faith happens at the kitchen
- 42:47table with an open Bible.
- 42:50Sometimes faith says,
- 42:52"I forgive you."
- 42:55Sometimes faith walks away from
- 42:56temptation.
- 42:58Sometimes faith asks another believer
- 43:01for prayer.
- 43:03Sometimes faith worships through the
- 43:06tears.
- 43:07Sometimes faith simply says,
- 43:10"Jesus,
- 43:11I still trust you."
- 43:14You see, we've seen God be faithful
- 43:15before.
- 43:17So, when faith fear starts talking, we
- 43:19need a memory. We have seen God save,
- 43:22we've seen him restore, we've seen him
- 43:23deliver.
- 43:25We've seen lives transformed.
- 43:27We've seen prodigals come home.
- 43:30We've seen prayers answered.
- 43:32And we've seen peace
- 43:34enter impossible situations.
- 43:37And even when circumstances did not turn
- 43:39out the way we hoped.
- 43:44We have watched God carry people through
- 43:46things they thought they could never
- 43:49survive.
- 43:52We've seen God be faithful.
- 43:55So, when fear says you're not going to
- 43:56make it,
- 43:58remember,
- 44:00I've seen God be faithful before.
- 44:03When fear says this time's different,
- 44:05remember,
- 44:06God has not changed.
- 44:08When the enemy whispers you are
- 44:09finished, remember Jesus is still Lord.
- 44:14When your strength says I cannot,
- 44:16remember that your hope was never
- 44:17supposed to rest in your own strength.
- 44:20Our confidence is in Christ.
- 44:25I want us to be the kind of church where
- 44:26strong people help tired people.
- 44:29Where older saints tell younger saints
- 44:31what God has done.
- 44:33When parents model faith in front of
- 44:35their children.
- 44:37Where young people learn they can live
- 44:39holy in an unholy culture.
- 44:42When somebody walking through grief
- 44:44doesn't have to alone.
- 44:49Where people
- 44:51don't have to pretend to be strong
- 44:54in order to belong.
- 44:59Where testimony produces courage. Where
- 45:01someone can say,
- 45:03"I don't know how to carry this." And
- 45:06another believer will say,
- 45:08"I'll stand beside you and help carry
- 45:09it."
- 45:11I want us to be a church where God is
- 45:12bigger than the name on the platform.
- 45:15Bigger than the pastor, bigger than the
- 45:17preacher, bigger than the worship
- 45:18leader,
- 45:19bigger than any personality,
- 45:22because this story was not ultimately
- 45:25about David.
- 45:28It was about David's God.
- 45:31And Christianity is not about us.
- 45:35It's about
- 45:37Jesus.
- 45:40Let me close with another picture from
- 45:42ordinary life.
- 45:46Imagine an older mother
- 45:49sitting at a kitchen table.
- 45:55And in this image,
- 45:59I I Sister Bartlett.
- 46:03Her Bible has worn pages.
- 46:07There are notes in the margin.
- 46:10Names written beside scriptures, Brother
- 46:12Mark.
- 46:15Some names have dates beside them.
- 46:18Some prayers have check marks.
- 46:22Some do not.
- 46:25She has prayed for children,
- 46:28grandchildren,
- 46:30marriages,
- 46:32sickness,
- 46:35financial needs,
- 46:37a prodigal.
- 46:40I'm sure there were prayers that God
- 46:41answered quickly.
- 46:44And Mark, there were prayers that took
- 46:46years to be answered.
- 46:51There were things I'm sure she asked God
- 46:53to do that did not happen the way she
- 46:55wanted.
- 46:57I'm sure there were nights that she
- 46:58cried at that same table.
- 47:02There were mornings she wondered how she
- 47:03was going to keep going.
- 47:06But she kept opening that Bible.
- 47:10She kept praying. She kept believing.
- 47:14Years later,
- 47:16when someone's grandchildren was going
- 47:18through the hardest of times in their
- 47:19life,
- 47:22maybe they sat at that same table.
- 47:26Maybe they opened that old Bible.
- 47:29And there, beside a verse,
- 47:32they find their own name written.
- 47:36Suddenly, they realize something.
- 47:40Someone had been praying for them long
- 47:42before they needed they knew they were
- 47:44going to need those prayers.
- 47:48Maybe she never preached a sermon.
- 47:51Maybe she never stood beside or behind a
- 47:53pulpit.
- 47:56Thousands of people may never know her
- 47:58name.
- 48:00But her faith stood in a place someone
- 48:03else would eventually need.
- 48:10That is what we need to understand
- 48:11tonight. You may be thinking your
- 48:13faithfulness is small.
- 48:15Your prayers,
- 48:17they may feel small.
- 48:19Your obedience may feel ordinary.
- 48:23But somebody
- 48:24may one day stand where you're standing
- 48:27right now.
- 48:29And when they saw that you
- 48:32and what they saw in you may help them
- 48:34believe that God can carry them, too.
- 48:38David stood once.
- 48:40Later, Abishai stood.
- 48:43Sibbecai stood. Elhanan stood. Jonathan
- 48:47stood.
- 48:48And someone is going to stand after us.
- 48:50The question
- 48:52is whether they will know from watching
- 48:55our lives
- 48:56if God is faithful.
- 48:59Would you stand with me?
- 49:03Before anyone moves, I want you to think
- 49:05for a moment.
- 49:08Don't think about the person beside you.
- 49:11Don't think about who you believe needs
- 49:14this message.
- 49:17Ask God one simple question.
- 49:20Lord,
- 49:21what are you saying to me?
- 49:24Maybe there is something standing in
- 49:26front of you right now.
- 49:28Maybe no one else knows about it.
- 49:32Maybe you walked into church smiling.
- 49:34You shook hands. You worshipped.
- 49:37You look fine.
- 49:39But inside, you're tired.
- 49:42You've been trying to be strong for
- 49:43everyone.
- 49:44Trying to hold your family together.
- 49:47Trying to keep believing. Trying to keep
- 49:49praying. Trying to keep serving.
- 49:54And somewhere inside your heart [music]
- 49:56you've been saying, "God,
- 49:58I don't know how much longer I can carry
- 49:59this."
- 50:02You need to know David went wax faint.
- 50:05David got tired, and God did not throw
- 50:08David away.
- 50:10God sent Abishai.
- 50:13Maybe tonight's not about you finding
- 50:15enough strength to keep pretending.
- 50:19Maybe tonight is about letting someone
- 50:21stand beside you.
- 50:24Maybe your response needs to be, "God, I
- 50:26need you."
- 50:28There is no shame in that prayer.
- 50:31Maybe tonight you're not David. Maybe
- 50:33you're Abishai.
- 50:35Maybe someone close to you is tired,
- 50:38and God's been dealing with your heart
- 50:39about them.
- 50:41They don't need a lecture. They don't
- 50:43need you to tell them what they should
- 50:44have done.
- 50:46They simply need someone to show up.
- 50:48Someone to pray. Someone to call.
- 50:50Someone to tell them that you're not
- 50:52carrying this alone.
- 50:54Maybe God's calling you to be someone's
- 50:56Abishai.
- 50:58Maybe you're facing something bigger
- 51:00than you. Fear, temptation, bitterness,
- 51:02grief, a family struggle, a private
- 51:05struggle.
- 51:07Something that you prayed about until
- 51:08you almost do not know what else to say.
- 51:12Remember David said, "The Lord that
- 51:14delivered me, he will deliver me."
- 51:18We have a history with God. We've seen
- 51:20him be faithful.
- 51:27I don't want us rushing in this moment
- 51:29because somewhere in this room is
- 51:30[music] a tired David. Somewhere in this
- 51:32room is an Abishai God wants to use.
- 51:36There's someone that's facing something
- 51:38they can't defeat.
- 51:42There's plenty of us who our children
- 51:44are watching.
- 51:46There's someone in this room
- 51:48>> [music]
- 51:48>> that an older saint whose testimony
- 51:49needs to be heard by another generation.
- 51:54So, I want to open this altar tonight.
- 51:56Not because you failed, not because
- 51:59you're weak, not because someone's
- 52:00judging you, because God is speaking.
- 52:04Come because you want to respond,
- 52:06because you're tired, because someone
- 52:08else is tired and you want to pray with
- 52:10them.
- 52:11Come because you need courage,
- 52:14because you need repentance.
- 52:16Come because you just want to tell God I
- 52:18still trust you.
- 52:20Remember, you're not proving how strong
- 52:22you are.
- 52:24You're coming to this altar to respond
- 52:26because he is strong.
- 52:28Not because you have all the [music]
- 52:30answers, but because he is faithful.
- 52:39>> There is no problem too big. [singing]
- 52:43God cannot solve it.
- 52:48>> [music]
- 52:49>> There is [singing] no mountain too tall.
- 52:53He cannot [music] move
- 52:56it.
- 53:00And there is no [singing] storm too dark
- 53:05that God cannot calm [singing]
- 53:07it.
- 53:11There is no sorrow too deep. He cannot
- 53:16soothe [music and singing]
- 53:18it.
- 53:20And if he carried [music]
- 53:23the weight of the [singing] world
- 53:26upon his shoulder,
