REUNION DE ENTRE SEMANA: La caída de Babilonia y la justicia de Jehová — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01Welcome, dear brothers, to the Midweek
- 0:04meeting.
- 0:06What are we going to be analyzing this
- 0:08week?
- 0:11Well, remember that we are in the Bible
- 0:14reading for this week from Jeremiah,
- 0:17chapter 49 and its chapters 50. 49 and
- 0:2050. Now, in Treasures of the Bible, to
- 0:23begin this meeting, we are going to see
- 0:26how Jehovah was just in condemning
- 0:29Babylon for its serious sins and
- 0:32arrogance, and how he completely forgave
- 0:35the Israelites who repented.
- 0:40We will learn how we can imitate his
- 0:43mercy by preaching the good news of the
- 0:46kingdom and helping others to get out of
- 0:49the false religions that abound today.
- 0:54Then we will move on to let's see them
- 0:57hidden and then we will continue with
- 0:59the Bible reading for this week where
- 1:01all of you can participate by listening
- 1:04to this reading.
- 1:07In Let's Be Better Teachers, we will see
- 1:10demonstrations to start conversations,
- 1:12make return visits, and how to make
- 1:15disciples.
- 1:17And in our Christian life, we will
- 1:19consider a very encouraging part.
- 1:22The theme is never forget what Jehovah
- 1:25remembers, and we will end with this
- 1:28week's congregation Bible study of
- 1:30chapter 15. Before we begin, I encourage
- 1:33all of you who are watching us to help
- 1:36us by giving us a like.
- 1:38Right below the video, it says like. Why
- 1:42?
- 1:43So that this meeting can reach many more
- 1:46people who still do not know about
- 1:48Jehovah and can get to know our Heavenly
- 1:51Father.
- 1:53So, let's start with treasures from the
- 1:56Bible.
- 2:00I want to start with a question.
- 2:05You can be firm and tender at the same
- 2:08time.
- 2:12Think of a surgeon in a hospital.
- 2:17Before operating, he studies the X-ray,
- 2:20he knows exactly where everything is
- 2:23wrong, and when he enters the operating
- 2:26room, he does not hesitate.
- 2:30He cuts where he has to cut.
- 2:34But he does it out of cruelty, he does
- 2:37not do it precisely because he wants the
- 2:41patient to live.
- 2:46That mixture of firmness and tenderness
- 2:48is precisely what we are going to see
- 2:51today in the character of Jehovah.
- 2:55Many believe that one must choose either
- 2:59a just God or one who punishes, or a
- 3:01merciful God who forgives everything.
- 3:07The word of God, the Bible, shows us
- 3:10something much more beautiful: two
- 3:12quadrides that do not fight, but rather
- 3:15complement each other.
- 3:18To verify this, let's go to the book of
- 3:21Jeremiah in chapter 50, where two very
- 3:25different groups of people appear: the
- 3:28inhabitants of powerful Babylon and the
- 3:31Israelites who lived as captives there.
- 3:35Let's see how Jehovah treated each of
- 3:39them.
- 3:40Today we will answer three questions.
- 3:44First, why was the judgment against
- 3:47Babylon just?
- 3:50Second, what does it mean for Jehovah to
- 3:52truly forgive?
- 3:54And third, how can we reflect that mercy
- 3:57?
- 3:59Let's remember that Babylon was the
- 4:02power of the time.
- 4:05It had enormous walls, wealth, armies,
- 4:08and that sense of power filled it with
- 4:11something dangerous: pride.
- 4:16Let's read what it says about it.
- 4:18Jeremiah chapter 50 and verse 14
- 4:23says the following.
- 4:26He says, “Attack Babylon on every side
- 4:30in battle array.
- 4:33All you who draw the bow, shoot; do not
- 4:36spare the arrows, for it is against the
- 4:39Lord that
- 4:42she has sinned.”
- 4:44Notice the reason given. It is not a
- 4:48whim.
- 4:49Babylon had sinned against the Lord.
- 4:52This was not a small mistake, but a
- 4:54sustained attitude.
- 4:57But look at what verse 29 says.
- 5:01Summon the archers against Babylon, all
- 5:04you who draw the bow.
- 5:07Encamp around her; do not let anyone
- 5:09escape.
- 5:11Give her what she deserves, for what she
- 5:15has done, do to her as she has done,
- 5:18because she has dealt arrogantly with
- 5:21the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.
- 5:25Let us notice two things here.
- 5:27First, the measure. Do to her as she did
- 5:30.
- 5:31The Lord does not invent a
- 5:32disproportionate sentence. He gives her
- 5:34back what she herself sowed.
- 5:37Second, the reason.
- 5:39She had dealt arrogantly with the Lord.
- 5:42Now look at what verse 31 says.
- 5:46“O rebel, behold, I am against you,”
- 5:49declares the Sovereign Lord GOD of hosts
- 5:52, “for your day must come, the time of
- 5:55my reckoning with you.”
- 5:59Notice how
- 6:02the Sovereign Lord GOD calls her a rebel
- 6:05. And notice also that there is a day in
- 6:08which there is an appointed day, a time
- 6:11of reckoning.
- 6:14None of this is improvised.
- 6:17Pride is a silent poison. The person who
- 6:21has it almost never realizes it.
- 6:23He thinks he is too important to correct
- 6:25himself.
- 6:27And here comes something that affects
- 6:28all of us.
- 6:31It is one thing to read about Babylon’s
- 6:33arrogance and another thing to ask
- 6:35ourselves honestly, is there any of that
- 6:37in me?
- 6:39Do I have trouble asking for forgiveness
- 6:41?
- 6:41Do I resent being counseled?
- 6:45The Lord our God judged Babylon, but he
- 6:47did not do it blindly or suddenly.
- 6:51That is why we can trust that his
- 6:53justice is never cruel or arbitrary.
- 6:58Every time the Judge of all the earth
- 7:01acts, he does so with full information
- 7:04and with perfect fairness.
- 7:08But the story doesn’t end there.
- 7:11With the fall of a proud city among its
- 7:13people, there were people who had
- 7:15recognized their mistake, and Jehovah
- 7:18acted very differently with them.
- 7:21Chapter 50, verse 20. Look what it says
- 7:24.
- 7:26In those days and at that time, declares
- 7:28Jehovah, guilt will be sought for Israel
- 7:31, but none will be found, and the sins
- 7:33of Judah will not be found, for I will
- 7:36forgive those I have spared.
- 7:40Listen to the central idea again.
- 7:44Guilt will be sought for, but none will
- 7:46be found.
- 7:47Sins, it says, will not be found.
- 7:52Imagine an art restorer in a museum in
- 7:55front of an old canvas covered in a dark
- 7:59stain.
- 8:01With patience and the use of proper
- 8:04products, he is slowly removing the
- 8:07layer.
- 8:08In the end, the original color is seen
- 8:11again and there is no scar left that
- 8:13would force us to say that there was a
- 8:15stain here.
- 8:18This is how the word of God describes
- 8:20Jehovah’s forgiveness.
- 8:23It is not a patch, it is not sweeping
- 8:26the fault under the rug, it is a real
- 8:28cleansing.
- 8:31When someone truly repents, Jehovah does
- 8:34not throw it in their face again.
- 8:37And why is it important for us to
- 8:40understand this point? Because there are
- 8:43sincere people who carry guilt around
- 8:46for years.
- 8:47They believe they've done something
- 8:49unforgivable, that there's no remedy.
- 8:53If you feel that way, dear brother, dear
- 8:55friend, this idea is for you.
- 8:59Jehovah's mercy is available to those
- 9:01who are willing to change course.
- 9:05And notice the balance. Babylon did not
- 9:08change and received the result of her
- 9:11actions.
- 9:13The Israelites did repent and received
- 9:16forgiveness.
- 9:19The same justice applied with the same
- 9:22impartiality produced different results
- 9:24because the attitudes were different.
- 9:29There is no contradiction, there is
- 9:31consistency.
- 9:34So the big question arises for us.
- 9:38If Jehovah is so merciful, what do we do
- 9:42with that?
- 9:45The children imitate their father and we
- 9:48are invited to reflect this same
- 9:51kindness.
- 9:54Let's see how this idea appears in the
- 9:56same chapter, chapter 50 and verse 2.
- 9:59Declare this among the nations and
- 10:01proclaim it.
- 10:04Set up a sign and proclaim it. Nothing
- 10:07hidden.
- 10:09Don't say, "Babylon has been conquered.
- 10:13"
- 10:13Bell has been put to shame.
- 10:16Medorath has been terrified.
- 10:18Her images have been put to shame. Her
- 10:21disgusting idols have been terrified.
- 10:25It must be announced. The news must be
- 10:28made known without hiding it. It says, "
- 10:31Conceal nothing."
- 10:34And now verse 8, look what verse 8 says
- 10:37.
- 10:39Flee from Babylon, get out of the land
- 10:41of the Chaldeans and be like the animals
- 10:43that go at the head of the flock.
- 10:47It's an urgent call.
- 10:49He says, “Flee when an earthquake hits a
- 10:53city, rescue workers do something
- 10:56touching.
- 10:59With fists raised, they ask for absolute
- 11:02silence from everyone present.
- 11:06The engines stop, the voices fall silent
- 11:09.
- 11:10Why?
- 11:12To listen, to detect among the rubble
- 11:16any sign that someone is still alive.
- 11:21No one asks if the trapped person
- 11:23deserves to be rescued.
- 11:25No one reproaches how he got there. All
- 11:28that matters is that he is alive and can
- 11:32be helped.
- 11:34That is the spirit in which we preach.
- 11:37We are not going to point fingers or
- 11:40look down on those who have other
- 11:43beliefs.
- 11:46Many honest people are trapped in
- 11:48teachings that do not answer their
- 11:51deepest questions.
- 11:54Our job is to listen to them and offer
- 11:57them a way out with patience and love.
- 12:03And when someone takes that first step,
- 12:06our attitude matters a great deal.
- 12:09We welcome them with warmth or with
- 12:12distance, with patience or with haste.
- 12:16Jehovah has shown us how to treat those
- 12:18who return.
- 12:20Think of how you felt when someone
- 12:21treated you patiently in a difficult
- 12:23moment.
- 12:25That kindness sticks in your mind.
- 12:28We can give that same gift to others.
- 12:32We can do the same.
- 12:35Let's return to the question we began
- 12:37with.
- 12:38Can one be both firm and tender at once
- 12:40? Jehovah is.
- 12:42With Babylon, he was just because her
- 12:44pride could not go unnoticed.
- 12:47With the repentant, he was merciful
- 12:50because their debt was truly erased.
- 12:53And we have something very beautiful to
- 12:55say.
- 12:56We are not judges, we are messengers.
- 12:59Our job is not to hide, but to open
- 13:02doors.
- 13:03Every conversation, every visit, every
- 13:06kind gesture can be the moment when
- 13:08someone hears for the first time that
- 13:10there is a way out.
- 13:13So, what do we take away today?
- 13:16Three things.
- 13:18First, that Jehovah's justice is perfect
- 13:21and we can trust it.
- 13:25Second, that his forgiveness is complete
- 13:28and no one who truly repents is left out
- 13:30.
- 13:33And third, that we have the privilege of
- 13:36imitating him, patiently helping others
- 13:39find the way out.
- 13:43And if you are left with any idea today
- 13:46, that is, Jehovah does not ask you to
- 13:48never make mistakes.
- 13:50He invites you to return to him with
- 13:53sincerity.
- 13:54His door remains open.
- 13:57Ask yourself now this week, who can I
- 14:00truly listen to?
- 14:02Who can I listen to? encourage?
- 14:04Is there anyone who is waiting, perhaps
- 14:07unknowingly, for a kind word?
- 14:11That we may all reflect each day the
- 14:14mercy of our Heavenly Father, Jehovah.
- 14:22Very well, dear brothers, now we move on
- 14:25to Finding Hidden Pearls.
- 14:29To begin and before asking the question
- 14:34, I invite all of you to open your
- 14:38Bibles to Jeremiah, chapter 50, verse 24
- 14:42, Jeremiah chapter 50, verse 24. Let's
- 14:47listen to the reading of this verse.
- 14:53>> Jeremiah 50, verse 24 says: "I have set
- 14:56a trap for you, and you, O Babylon, have
- 14:59fallen into it without knowing it.
- 15:03You have been found and captured,
- 15:04because it was Jehovah whom you opposed
- 15:06."
- 15:08>> Very good.
- 15:10Now, considering the verse that was just
- 15:13read, the question is this: For
- 15:15spiritual pearls, what pearls did you
- 15:18find?
- 15:20The question is this: What did Jehovah
- 15:24do to trap Babylon?
- 15:29What did Jehovah do to trap Babylon?
- 15:33Let us all hear the answer to this
- 15:35question.
- 15:38In Jeremiah 50, verse 24, Jehovah says
- 15:41to Babylon, "I set a trap for you, and
- 15:44you were captured, and you did not know
- 15:47it." How did he do it?
- 15:49Jehovah used Cyrus, king of Persia.
- 15:52Cyrus diverted the waters of the
- 15:54Euphrates River, which flowed through
- 15:55the city, and the riverbed was almost
- 15:57dry.
- 15:58So his soldiers entered where no one
- 16:00expected them.
- 16:02Babylon felt protected by its river and
- 16:04its walls, but Jehovah turned that
- 16:07defense into the door of its downfall.
- 16:10Nothing can stop what Jehovah intends.
- 16:14>> What is most striking in this verse is
- 16:17the phrase, "And you did not know it."
- 16:19Babylon was so confident that she did
- 16:22not even notice the trap.
- 16:25That night the city was celebrating a
- 16:27great festival, and the Persian soldiers
- 16:29advanced unnoticed along the riverbed.
- 16:32The city gates had been left open.
- 16:35Jehovah arranged everything so the
- 16:37Babylonians would let down their guard
- 16:39at the worst time.
- 16:41This teaches us that trust in human
- 16:43power is a very dangerous trap.
- 16:45Only trust in Jehovah keeps us safe.
- 16:50>> Jehovah did not improvise. Centuries
- 16:52earlier, through Isaiah, he had
- 16:54announced the name of Cyrus and also
- 16:56that he would dry up the waters and that
- 16:58the gates would not be shut.
- 17:01When the time came, Jehovah put every
- 17:03detail of his plan into action.
- 17:05Jeremiah 50:24 explains why.
- 17:08Babylon was trapped because you opposed
- 17:11Jehovah.
- 17:13She had mistreated her people and
- 17:15proudly set herself up against the true
- 17:17God.
- 17:18That this was fulfilled so exactly gives
- 17:21us full assurance that all of Jehovah’s
- 17:23promises will come true.
- 17:27>> Let us consider the personal lesson.
- 17:30Jehovah brought down Babylon because she
- 17:32opposed him and treated his servants
- 17:34cruelly.
- 17:35To accomplish this, he used a ruler and
- 17:37a plan that no one could have imagined.
- 17:39And what seemed like his greatest
- 17:41strength turned out to be his weakness.
- 17:44This comforts us because Jehovah sees
- 17:46injustice and acts in his own time. In
- 17:49the meantime, we do not have any need to
- 17:52retaliate or to despair. We can wait
- 17:54patiently, knowing that Jehovah always
- 17:57keeps his promises and that those who
- 17:59trust in him are never disappointed.
- 18:04>> Very good, what excellent answers we
- 18:07have just heard.
- 18:09Now let's see what spiritual gems have
- 18:13you found in this week's Bible reading?
- 18:19What spiritual gems have you found in
- 18:21this week's Bible reading?
- 18:25Let's all hear the answers to these
- 18:27questions.
- 18:30>> Jeremiah 49, verse 11. Here Jehovah says
- 18:33, "Leave your fatherless children, and I
- 18:35will keep them alive, and your widows
- 18:38may trust in me."
- 18:40Notice how tender Jehovah is.
- 18:43Even in the midst of a message of
- 18:45judgment, he remembers the most
- 18:47vulnerable.
- 18:48This teaches us that no orphan or widow
- 18:51goes unnoticed by him and invites us to
- 18:53imitate him.
- 18:55We can visit widows in the congregation
- 18:57, invite a family where a parent is
- 19:00missing, and offer practical help.
- 19:03Thus Jehovah cares for them using our
- 19:05hands.
- 19:08Jeremiah 49, verse 4. Jehovah rebukes
- 19:11Ammon, who boasted of his valleys and
- 19:13trusted in his treasures, and who said,
- 19:16“Who will come against me?”
- 19:19His security was in material things, but
- 19:22when Jehovah’s judgment came, none of
- 19:24that protected him.
- 19:26Today it is also easy to set our heart
- 19:28on money, a good job, or savings.
- 19:31Let us ask ourselves, on what does my
- 19:33peace of mind rest?
- 19:35A disciple of Christ works diligently,
- 19:37but puts his trust in Jehovah and not in
- 19:40his riches.
- 19:43Jeremiah 49, verse 16. Jehovah says to
- 19:46Edom, “The arrogance of your heart has
- 19:50deceived you.” Edom lived on high cliffs
- 19:53, like an eagle that makes its nest on
- 19:55high, and he thought he was untouchable
- 19:57.
- 19:58But Jehovah said that he would bring it
- 19:59down from there.
- 20:01Note that pride is deceptive; it makes
- 20:03us see our problems as small and our
- 20:06abilities as great.
- 20:07Jesus taught us to be humble like a
- 20:10child.
- 20:10We can apply this by accepting advice
- 20:13without becoming defensive and by
- 20:14recognizing our mistakes with simplicity
- 20:17.
- 20:19>> Jeremiah 49, verse 7. Jehovah asks with
- 20:22irony, “Is there no more wisdom in Teman
- 20:26?” That city was famous for its wise men
- 20:28. Yet, with all their fame, they could
- 20:31not foresee what was coming or prevent
- 20:34it.
- 20:34Human wisdom, no matter how brilliant it
- 20:36may seem, fails when it departs from
- 20:38Jehovah.
- 20:40This protects us from being impressed by
- 20:42philosophers, influencers, or experts
- 20:44who contradict the Bible.
- 20:46When we have to decide something
- 20:48important, let us first seek what
- 20:50Jehovah says in his word and then
- 20:52consider other opinions.
- 20:56>> Jeremiah 49, verse 19. Jehovah asks, “
- 20:59Who is like me?
- 21:02Who will summon me to judgment?” No one
- 21:04can equal him or hold him accountable.
- 21:07He is the sovereign of the universe.
- 21:09This question helps us to see our
- 21:11complaints in proportion.
- 21:13Sometimes, when faced with a difficulty
- 21:15, we think, “Why does Jehovah allow this
- 21:17?” But remembering who he is makes us
- 21:20more humble and more confident. He who
- 21:22created everything and has never failed
- 21:24to keep his promises deserves our
- 21:25obedience even if we do not understand
- 21:27everything. A good disciple of Christ
- 21:28deserves our obedience even if we do not
- 21:30understand everything. submits with joy
- 21:32.
- 21:34>> Jeremiah 49, verse 39. After announcing
- 21:37the ruin of Elam, Jehovah ends with a
- 21:40promise.
- 21:42In the last days I will gather the
- 21:44captives of Elam.
- 21:46What mercy! Even to a nation that was
- 21:50punished, Jehovah leaves an open door to
- 21:52restoration. This teaches us not to
- 21:55judge anyone as a lost cause.
- 21:57That person who today opposes the truth
- 21:59or that family member who has distanced
- 22:01himself can change. Jehovah always sees
- 22:03the potential. Let us continue to pray
- 22:05for them and be patient.
- 22:09>> Jeremiah 50, verses 4 and 5. Jehovah
- 22:12says that the Israelites would return
- 22:14weeping, seeking him, and asking for the
- 22:17way to Zion.
- 22:19They say, "Come, let us join Jehovah in
- 22:22an eternal covenant.""Note the attitude
- 22:24.
- 22:25They wept with repentance, sought
- 22:27Jehovah, and wanted to go his way.
- 22:30This is how our return to Jehovah should
- 22:32be when we have grown cold.
- 22:34This message reminds us that our
- 22:36dedication is a covenant that must not
- 22:38be forgotten.
- 22:39Let us renew that commitment each day
- 22:41with prayer, personal study, and
- 22:44obedience.
- 22:46>> Jeremiah 50, verse 6. Jehovah says," My
- 22:49people have become like lost sheep.
- 22:53Their shepherds have led them astray.
- 22:56The leaders who were supposed to care
- 22:58for the people have led them astray.
- 23:00This makes us value the good shepherd
- 23:02Jesus Christ, who gives his life for the
- 23:05sheep. It also gives us a responsibility
- 23:07.
- 23:08If we are elders, parents, or
- 23:10instructors, we must shepherd with
- 23:11tenderness and always point to Jehovah.
- 23:15And if a sheep has gotten lost, let us
- 23:17go and look for it with love, with a
- 23:18visit or a call.
- 23:22Jeremiah 50, verse 8. Here Jehovah gives
- 23:25an urgent command to his people. Flee
- 23:28from the midst of Babylon. He does not
- 23:30say to think about it for a long time,
- 23:32but to flee.
- 23:33Today, Babylon the Great, the false
- 23:35religion, continues to offer deception.
- 23:38But we can also ask ourselves what
- 23:40customs, entertainment, or friendships
- 23:43we have that keep us too close to ideas
- 23:45contrary to Jehovah.
- 23:47Acting decisively, without delay, is a
- 23:50sign of faith.
- 23:51Leaving in time is always safer than
- 23:53staying and risking everything.
- 23:58Jeremiah 50, verse 20. Jehovah promises
- 24:00that the error of Israel will be sought
- 24:02, and it will not be found, and the sins
- 24:04of Judah, and they will not be found,
- 24:06because he will forgive.
- 24:09How wonderful! When Jehovah forgives, he
- 24:12does so completely.
- 24:14Many times the feeling of guilt haunts
- 24:15us, even though we have already repented
- 24:17and Jehovah has forgiven us.
- 24:19This text encourages us to accept his
- 24:21forgiveness and move forward.
- 24:23It also teaches us to truly forgive
- 24:25others without holding a grudge or
- 24:27reminding them of their faults.
- 24:31>> Jeremiah 50, verse 34. Jehovah says of
- 24:34his oppressed people, “Their redeemer is
- 24:37strong; the Lord of hosts is his name;
- 24:40he will plead their cause.”
- 24:43The people were captive and powerless,
- 24:45but they had a powerful defender.
- 24:48When we suffer injustice, whether at
- 24:51work, at school, or in the family, we
- 24:53can feel helpless.
- 24:55But this text assures us that Jehovah
- 24:57sees and acts at the right time. That is
- 25:00why we do not return evil for evil, but
- 25:03leave the matter in his hands and
- 25:05continue doing good.
- 25:09>> Jeremiah 50, verse 38. Jehovah says that
- 25:11a drought would come against the waters
- 25:14of Babylon and explains why.
- 25:17It was a land of carved images and they
- 25:19went mad with idols.
- 25:21Notice how what they worshiped could not
- 25:24save them.
- 25:25Today, idols are not always statues.
- 25:28They can be sports, fame, social media,
- 25:30or work when they take the place that is
- 25:33rightful to Jehovah. Let’s examine what
- 25:36occupies our time and our thoughts. May
- 25:39Jehovah always come first. in our lives
- 25:42.
- 25:44>> Very well, dear brothers.
- 25:46Now we continue with the Bible reading
- 25:49for this week.
- 25:51I invite all of you, please, to join me
- 25:54in reading the book of Jeremiah. Let us
- 25:56open our Bibles.
- 25:59Please be so kind as to turn to Jeremiah
- 26:08chapter
- 26:1150 and focus on verses 24 through 40.
- 26:21Let's proceed to read. I have set a trap
- 26:25for you, and you, O Babylon, have fallen
- 26:29into it without realizing it. You have
- 26:33been found and captured, because it was
- 26:33the Lord whom you opposed.
- 26:37You were found and captured, for you
- 26:39opposed Jehovah.
- 26:41Jehovah has opened his storehouse and
- 26:44brought out the weapons of his
- 26:46indignation.
- 26:48For the Sovereign Lord, the Lord God of
- 26:51hosts, has a work to do in the land of
- 26:54the Chaldeans.
- 26:57Attack them from afar.
- 27:00Open her barns and make heaps of her, as
- 27:05if they were heaps of grain.
- 27:09Destroy her completely.
- 27:12Let nothing be left of her.
- 27:15Slaughter all her young bulls, which Go
- 27:18down to the slaughter.
- 27:21Woe to them, for their day has come, the
- 27:24time of their reckoning.
- 27:29The sound of those fleeing, those
- 27:32escaping from the land of Babylon, is
- 27:34heard, to proclaim in Zion the vengeance
- 27:37of the Lord our God, vengeance for his
- 27:40temple.
- 27:43Assemble against Babylon the archers,
- 27:46all who draw the bow.
- 27:50Encamp around her.
- 27:52Let no one escape.
- 27:56Give her what she deserves for what she
- 27:58has done.
- 28:00Do to her as she has done, because she
- 28:03has dealt arrogantly with the Lord, with
- 28:05the Holy One of Israel.
- 28:09Therefore her young men will fall in her
- 28:12squares, and all her soldiers will die
- 28:14on that day, declares the Lord.
- 28:19O rebel, see, I am against you, declares
- 28:21the Sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts.
- 28:27For your day must come, the time of my
- 28:30reckoning with you.
- 28:34O rebel, you will stumble and fall, and
- 28:36no one will help you up.
- 28:39I will set your cities on fire, and it
- 28:42will devour everything around you.
- 28:47This is what the Lord of hosts says.
- 28:52The people of Israel and Judah are
- 28:54oppressed, held captive by all who took
- 28:56them captive.
- 29:00They have refused to let them go, but
- 29:02the repurchaser is strong.
- 29:06His name is the Lord of hosts.
- 29:10He will surely plead their case to give
- 29:15peace to the land and to cause trouble
- 29:19for the people of Babylon.
- 29:25A sword will come against the Chaldeans
- 29:27, declares the Lord, against the people
- 29:30of Babylon, against her princes and
- 29:32against her wise men.
- 29:35A sword will come against those who
- 29:38speak empty things and act like fools.
- 29:42A sword will come against her warriors,
- 29:46and they will be terrified.
- 29:49A sword will come against her horses and
- 29:52her chariots and against the mixed
- 29:54peoples who are in her, and they will
- 29:57become like women.
- 29:59A sword will come against her treasures
- 30:02, and they will be plundered.
- 30:05Devastation will come upon her waters,
- 30:08and they will dry up, for she is a land
- 30:12of graven images.
- 30:14And because of their terrifying visions
- 30:17, they act like madmen.
- 30:20That is why the creatures are acting
- 30:21like fools.
- 30:22of the wilderness will dwell there with
- 30:25the howling beasts, and the ostriches
- 30:28will dwell in it.
- 30:31It will never be inhabited again, and it
- 30:34will be deserted for all generations,
- 30:36just as God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah
- 30:39and their surrounding towns, declares
- 30:42the Lord.
- 30:45No one will live there, and no man will
- 30:48settle there.
- 30:54Okay, now let's move on to becoming
- 30:58better teachers.
- 31:00Let's look at the following assignments
- 31:02.
- 31:04Let's start with the first assignment,
- 31:07where we are encouraged to start
- 31:09conversations, door-to-door
- 31:11conversations, teaching a Bible truth.
- 31:16And if the person giving the assignment
- 31:20wants, they can use one of the ones in
- 31:25Appendix A of the booklet A Labor of
- 31:29Love.
- 31:31Let's listen to the next assignment.
- 31:35>> Good afternoon, my name is Martha.
- 31:37Sorry to bother you, I won't take up
- 31:39much of your time.
- 31:40I'm visiting people in the area to talk
- 31:43about something that affects us all.
- 31:45Good afternoon. What is it about?
- 31:47>> These days we see a lot of news about
- 31:50disease, violence, and economic problems
- 31:53. I'm sure you worry about your family
- 31:55too. Do you think that one day we will
- 31:57be able to do that? Could the world
- 31:58really change?
- 32:00Well, I would like it to, but the truth
- 32:02is getting worse every day.
- 32:04>> I understand. Many people think the same
- 32:07way. That's why I was delighted to find
- 32:09a promise in the Bible. Can you let me
- 32:11read you a short text? Yes, of course.
- 32:15>> Here in Revelation 21:34, God promises
- 32:17that he will live close to humanity and
- 32:20that he will eliminate suffering. He
- 32:23says that he will take away pain, tears
- 32:25, and even death.
- 32:26What do you think of that promise?
- 32:29>> It sounds very nice, but will it really
- 32:31come true? That's
- 32:32>> a good question. The beautiful thing is
- 32:35that the Bible doesn't just say that God
- 32:37wants to do it, but it explains how and
- 32:39when he will do it.
- 32:40For example, did you know that Jesus
- 32:42himself taught us to pray asking for
- 32:44that kingdom to come and for God's will
- 32:46to be done on earth?
- 32:48>> Yes, the Lord's Prayer.
- 32:50I prayed it as a child, but I never
- 32:52thought about what it meant.
- 32:54>> Exactly. And that prayer has an answer.
- 32:57If you want, I would love to come back
- 32:59another day and show you what that
- 33:01kingdom is and how it will benefit us.
- 33:03That way you will have the answer to
- 33:05your question of if it is. will fulfill
- 33:07. Well, I'm interested. Come back next
- 33:10week.
- 33:10>> Perfect. Does Tuesday afternoon sound
- 33:12good to you? And for the next visit,
- 33:15think about this question. What is the
- 33:17kingdom of God really and what will it
- 33:20do for us?
- 33:21>> Okay, Tuesday. Thank you for the visit.
- 33:24>> Thank you for listening to me, Lucia.
- 33:26Have a nice afternoon.
- 33:28>> Very good.
- 33:29Let's continue now to the next
- 33:32assignment.
- 33:34Let's do door-to-door return visits.
- 33:39In this way, we will see how we can
- 33:43visit someone to talk about one topic,
- 33:47but the person wants to talk about a
- 33:50different topic.
- 33:53We will see how this situation is
- 33:56handled in the next assignment. Let's
- 33:59see.
- 34:01Good afternoon, Rosa. I'm Marta. Do you
- 34:04remember me? We met a few days ago. Oh,
- 34:07yes, Marta, come in, come in.
- 34:10Excuse me for running into you with
- 34:12everything so messy. Don't worry, I
- 34:14don't want to take up too much of your
- 34:16time. I just stopped by to say hi.
- 34:18Last time we agreed to talk about what
- 34:21life will be like when suffering is gone
- 34:23.
- 34:24I brought you a very beautiful verse
- 34:25about that.
- 34:26>> Yes, I remember. But look, today I'm
- 34:29really worried about something else.
- 34:32With the power outages, everything in my
- 34:34freezer was ruined. I lost the food for
- 34:36the week and I don't have enough money.
- 34:38I don't know what to do anymore.
- 34:40>> Oh, Rosa, how hard it is.
- 34:43With how much everything costs, losing
- 34:45food is a hard blow.
- 34:46There were many days without power,
- 34:48almost all of yesterday. And my children
- 34:51still have to go to school and I can't
- 34:54even plan anything.
- 34:56>> I understand. That makes it very
- 34:58difficult to organize. And it's not just
- 35:00you, there are many families going
- 35:01through the same thing.
- 35:03Tell me, what worries you the most about
- 35:05all this?
- 35:06>> Well, that you work and work and there's
- 35:08always something that goes wrong.
- 35:11Sometimes I think, how long will this
- 35:13last?
- 35:13>> What a good question, Rosa.
- 35:15And that's precisely what the Bible
- 35:18promises will change.
- 35:20Can I read you something that has given
- 35:22me a lot of encouragement? It's in
- 35:24Isaiah 65: 21-22.
- 35:27It says that people will build houses
- 35:30and live in them and enjoy the work of
- 35:33their hands. What do you think? What do
- 35:36you think?
- 35:36>> Nice. I wish it were like that. That's
- 35:39what
- 35:39>> God promised.
- 35:41And look, he's not talking about a
- 35:43distant and unreal future, but about
- 35:45ordinary people like you and me, with
- 35:47jobs, homes, and peace of mind.
- 35:49Then, no one will have to worry about
- 35:51whether or not they have enough to eat.
- 35:54>> Yes, sometimes we don't know what to
- 35:56believe anymore.
- 35:58I get it.
- 35:59>> That's why I like to show you what the
- 36:01Bible says so that it's not just my
- 36:02opinion.
- 36:04Rosa, I had come to talk to you about
- 36:07another topic, but I think what you told
- 36:09me is more important today.
- 36:11If it's okay with you, next time you
- 36:13come I'll show you another text about
- 36:15how God is going to end these injustices
- 36:17.
- 36:18That's where what we've been seeing
- 36:20about suffering will fit in.
- 36:21>> Of course. I'd like to. Come back on
- 36:24Thursday, at this same time. Perfect,
- 36:26I'll come back on Thursday. Meanwhile, I
- 36:28leave you with this question to think
- 36:30about.
- 36:31Why does God allow so many difficulties
- 36:33to exist?
- 36:35On Thursday we'll look for the answer
- 36:36together in the Bible.
- 36:37>> Sounds good to me. Thank you for
- 36:39listening to me, Marta.
- 36:41I really needed it. That's what we're
- 36:43here for,
- 36:44>> Rosa. Take care, and I hope your power
- 36:46gets fixed very soon. I'll see you on
- 36:49Thursday.
- 36:50>> Very good.
- 36:51Now let's listen to the last assignment
- 36:54.
- 36:55Let's make disciples.
- 36:57Let's see how this situation is handled
- 36:59in the next assignment.
- 37:01Let's listen and see.
- 37:04>> Andrew, last week we saw that Jesus is
- 37:06the head of the congregation.
- 37:09Do you remember what we said about how
- 37:11he leads his people?
- 37:12>> Yes. That he does it from heaven and
- 37:14that he cares for his followers.
- 37:15>> Exactly. That's exactly what we need for
- 37:18today.
- 37:20Today we will see what kind of leader
- 37:22Jesus is.
- 37:23Read with me Matthew 11: 28-30.
- 37:27>> Come to me, all you who labor and are
- 37:29burdened, and I will give you rest.
- 37:32Take my yoke and learn from me, for I am
- 37:35gentle and humble in heart.
- 37:38With me you will find rest, for my yoke
- 37:41is easy to bear and my burden is light.
- 37:43>> Thank you. Just one question. According
- 37:46to what you read, what kind of leader is
- 37:49Jesus?
- 37:49>> Well, one who doesn't burden you with
- 37:51too much.
- 37:53It says that his burden is light and
- 37:55that he is gentle and humble of heart.
- 37:57>> Very well said.
- 37:59And how does he want us to feel?
- 38:01Relieved with rest. That's right.
- 38:04>> Look, I'll give you a simple example.
- 38:07Imagine that you are carrying a heavy
- 38:09sack of potatoes under the sun and
- 38:11someone says to you, "Come, I'll help
- 38:13you carry it.""How would you feel?
- 38:15>> Grateful and eager to keep walking. Well
- 38:18, that's
- 38:19>> how Jesus wants us to feel with Him.
- 38:23Now, you told me last week that at your
- 38:25job your boss is very demanding and is
- 38:28never happy.
- 38:30How do you see that with Jesus?
- 38:32>> That Jesus doesn't pressure you, He
- 38:34wants to help you, not overwhelm you.
- 38:36>> Right? And here's something interesting
- 38:38.
- 38:39Jesus is not here on earth, but the
- 38:41elders of the congregation try to
- 38:43imitate Him.
- 38:45Let's read Isaiah 32: 2.
- 38:48And each one of them will be like a
- 38:50shelter from the wind, a refuge from the
- 38:53rainstorm, like streams of water in a
- 38:55dry land, like the shadow of a high rock
- 38:58in a parched land.
- 39:00>> What strikes you about how He describes
- 39:02these men? He
- 39:03>> compares them to a shelter from the wind
- 39:06and a place to hide from the storm.
- 39:08>> Very good observation.
- 39:10And First Peter 5: 1 to 3 tells us how
- 39:13they should act.
- 39:14Let's read it. Therefore, I myself am an
- 39:17elder, a witness to the sufferings of
- 39:20the Christ and One who will also receive
- 39:23the glory that is to be revealed, I make
- 39:25this appeal to the elders among you:
- 39:28Shepherd the flock of God entrusted to
- 39:30your care, serving as overseers. Do not
- 39:33do it under compulsion, but willingly in
- 39:35the sight of God.
- 39:37Do not do it for the sake of dishonest
- 39:39gain, but with diligence.
- 39:41Do not act as if you were masters over
- 39:43those who are God’s inheritance, but be
- 39:46examples to the flock.
- 39:47>> What two things does it say elders are
- 39:49not to do? They must
- 39:51>> not work for money, nor should they rule
- 39:53others like masters.
- 39:55>> Great.
- 39:56What are they to do instead?
- 39:58>> Serve willingly and be a good example.
- 40:01That’s it.
- 40:01>> No need to explain further. You got the
- 40:04main idea yourself.
- 40:07Tell me in your own words, how does it
- 40:09make you feel to know that these men are
- 40:11working hard to help you as Jesus would
- 40:12? Don’t
- 40:13>> worry, I know I won’t be alone if I have
- 40:16a problem. I’m
- 40:17>> glad to hear you say that.
- 40:19There’s a lesson objective. At your next
- 40:22meeting, go to an elder and ask him.
- 40:25What do you like most about your work?
- 40:27Are you up for it?
- 40:28>> Yes. I think it will help me get to know
- 40:30you better. Perfect. Next week we will
- 40:33continue with point five, where we will
- 40:36see how elders preach by example. Thank
- 40:39you for your effort, Andrés.
- 40:40>> Thank you, Carlos.
- 40:44>> Thank you very much, dear brothers, for
- 40:46paying attention to our three
- 40:48assignments that have been prepared with
- 40:51much love for all of you.
- 40:54Let's continue with the meeting.
- 41:00Very well, dear brothers, we have
- 41:02reached the part about our Christian
- 41:05life and in the next part, in the next
- 41:08section, we are going to see the section
- 41:10or topic in the form of a talk.
- 41:15Never forget what Jehovah remembers.
- 41:20Never forget what Jehovah remembers.
- 41:25Through this talk, the following
- 41:27question will be answered.
- 41:31What lessons do we learn from the video
- 41:35that will be analyzed in this section,
- 41:38which will be in the form of a talk?
- 41:42We invite you to pay attention to the
- 41:46following talk.
- 41:49The topic is never forget what Jehovah
- 41:53remembers.
- 41:55Let's listen.
- 41:58Imagine that someone told you," There is
- 42:02something that Jehovah remembers and
- 42:06that you should never forget. "What will
- 42:10it be? It's not a date or a historical
- 42:14detail.
- 42:16It's something that has to do with the
- 42:22way Jehovah sees and treats each of us.
- 42:29The answer is in Psalm 103 and verse 14.
- 42:34Psalm 103 and verse 14 says the
- 42:38following.
- 42:41It says,
- 42:44" For he knows how we are formed, he
- 42:47remembers that we are dust.
- 42:51Jehovah is very aware of our
- 42:54imperfections.
- 42:57He knows that we stumble, that we grow
- 43:00weary, and that sometimes we say the
- 43:03wrong things. "And notice the context.
- 43:10David begins this psalm by reminding
- 43:13himself not to forget what God has done
- 43:16.
- 43:20And what's the first thing he mentions?
- 43:23That Jehovah forgives.
- 43:27Later on he speaks over and over again
- 43:30about his mercy and his loyal love.
- 43:35We can imagine Jehovah's loyal love as a
- 43:39huge house.
- 43:42And Jehovah's mercy and forgiveness are
- 43:47spacious dwellings within that same
- 43:51house.
- 43:52There's room for all of us.
- 43:56But there's a beautiful detail.
- 44:00The Hebrew word translated “remember”
- 44:05can mean to remember and to act.
- 44:12Jehovah not only knows that we are
- 44:15fragile, it is this that moves him to do
- 44:19something.
- 44:22What?
- 44:24To show mercy, to show forgiveness.
- 44:29To whom? To the sinner who repents.
- 44:35We can summarize the entire lesson in
- 44:39three words: limitations, expectations,
- 44:42and actions.
- 44:45Jehovah, Jehovah, our heavenly Father
- 44:49knows our limitations and that is why he
- 44:54adjusts what he expects of us.
- 44:59Our Heavenly Father does not demand
- 45:02perfection from us.
- 45:05When we fail, his response is compassion
- 45:09.
- 45:12Think of a father teaching his son to
- 45:15ride a bike.
- 45:18The child falls once, twice, 10 times.
- 45:23The father gets angry and says, “You
- 45:26should know by now.”
- 45:29He doesn’t know that his son is just
- 45:33learning.
- 45:36He picks him up, shakes him, and cleans
- 45:40his knees.
- 45:41And what do you think he says?
- 45:44Come on, let’s try again.
- 45:47You can do it.
- 45:49This is how Jehovah treats us.
- 45:52And this is how he invites us to treat
- 45:56others.
- 45:59This is the first lesson.
- 46:01Let us forgive as Jehovah forgives.
- 46:08How easy it is to forget what Jehovah
- 46:10remembers when someone offends us.
- 46:16When we feel our blood begin to boil,
- 46:19next time let us stop for a moment and
- 46:24ask ourselves, am I perhaps forgetting
- 46:28that which Jehovah himself chooses to
- 46:32remember?
- 46:35Am I demanding perfection from someone
- 46:38who is just as much dust as I am?
- 46:44When we remember the limitations of our
- 46:48brothers and sisters, we adjust our
- 46:52expectations and then it becomes much
- 46:55easier to show mercy, let go of
- 46:59resentment, and nurture peace and unity
- 47:03.
- 47:05This is the second lesson.
- 47:09Let’s help others accept Jehovah’s
- 47:12forgiveness.
- 47:16Some brothers carry so much guilt for
- 47:19past mistakes that, unknowingly, they
- 47:22keep remembering what Jehovah has
- 47:24already forgotten.
- 47:29How can we help them?
- 47:33First, by reminding them why Jehovah
- 47:37wants to forgive.
- 47:41Why?
- 47:42Because he knows that we are dust.
- 47:48And then reading Psalm 103, verse 12,
- 47:53please join me, Psalm 103, verse 12,
- 47:57which says," As far as the west is, as
- 48:01the east is from the west, so far has he
- 48:06put our sins from us.
- 48:10"Do you see, dear brothers?
- 48:16Were you able to notice
- 48:20the east and the west? They never meet.
- 48:26They never meet.
- 48:30Now, a reference work explains that when
- 48:34God removes our sins in this way, there
- 48:38is no trace left, not even their smell,
- 48:42not even their memory.
- 48:47A smell can awaken a memory, but Jehovah
- 48:52forgives so completely that not even the
- 48:57slightest trace remains.
- 49:03Imagine when
- 49:08a memory comes to us and we begin to
- 49:10reproach ourselves for what has happened
- 49:13.
- 49:16Brothers, let us take two decisions
- 49:19today.
- 49:22To forgive as Jehovah forgives and to
- 49:26comfort those who feel unworthy of his
- 49:29forgiveness.
- 49:33When guilt weighs on us, let us remember
- 49:38that our Heavenly Father, Jehovah, knows
- 49:43very well what we are made of.
- 49:47And when someone fails us, let us
- 49:50remember that he is also dust.
- 49:55Never, but never, dear brothers, let us
- 50:00forget what our Heavenly Father reminds
- 50:04us of.
- 50:07And by the way, let us strive, shall we
- 50:11?
- 50:13Let us strive not to remember what
- 50:16Jehovah forgets.
- 50:23Welcome, dear brothers, to this week's
- 50:26congregational Bible study.
- 50:31This week in the book Let's Walk with
- 50:33God with Courage, we will be analyzing
- 50:36chapter 15, Naomi and Ruth.
- 50:40The topic of study is They Remained
- 50:44Together in Difficult Times.
- 50:49We will begin with the summary of this
- 50:52chapter and the answers to each of your
- 50:55questions.
- 50:58You are all welcome to the
- 51:01congregational Bible study.
- 51:04We will begin with the summary.
- 51:10There was a time when famine struck
- 51:13Israel and a man decided to move with
- 51:15his wife Naomi and their two sons from
- 51:19Bethlehem to the land of Mous.
- 51:25But tragedy overtook them.
- 51:29Naomi's husband died and she was left
- 51:32alone with her children in the foreign
- 51:34land.
- 51:36In time, the young people married two
- 51:40Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah.
- 51:43About 10 years passed.
- 51:46years and then came the hardest blow.
- 51:50Both of her sons also died.
- 51:53Naomi was left without a husband,
- 51:55without children, and without the hope
- 51:58of being a grandmother.
- 52:01Her heart was broken.
- 52:04However, with no reason to stay in Mo,
- 52:08Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, a
- 52:12journey of about a week.
- 52:17Her two daughters-in-law went with her,
- 52:19but on the way Naomi thought of their
- 52:21well-being before her own.
- 52:26She did not want to take them away from
- 52:28their people or take away their chance
- 52:31to remarry and start a family.
- 52:34So she asked them to each return to
- 52:37their mother’s house.
- 52:40She was prepared to walk the rest of the
- 52:43way alone.
- 52:45They both wept.
- 52:48Orpah said goodbye and returned.
- 52:51But Ruth clung to her mother-in-law.
- 52:55Ruth said words that will go down in
- 52:59history.
- 53:00Wherever Naomi went, she would go.
- 53:05Naomi’s people would be hers and Naomi’s
- 53:08God would be her God.
- 53:11Ruth had already made her decision, to
- 53:14worship Jehovah no matter the cost.
- 53:18The two women arrived in Bethlehem and
- 53:22the people were moved to see how much
- 53:25had changed. Naomi.
- 53:29With a sad soul, she said that Jehovah
- 53:32had filled her life with bitterness and
- 53:35that she had returned empty-handed.
- 53:40Those words may have hurt Ruth, who had
- 53:43left everything to accompany her.
- 53:48However, the story does not say that
- 53:51Ruth was upset; on the contrary, she got
- 53:54to work.
- 53:57It was harvest time and she went out
- 54:00into the fields to pick ears of corn
- 54:02that the harvesters left behind,
- 54:05something that God’s law allowed the
- 54:07poor and foreigners to do so that she
- 54:10and Naomi would have something to eat.
- 54:16RC ended up in the field of Boas, a
- 54:19wealthy, respected and faithful man to
- 54:22Jehovah, son of Raath.
- 54:26Boas noticed the young worker and asked
- 54:28who she was.
- 54:31They told him everything he had done for
- 54:33his mother-in-law.
- 54:36Then he encouraged her, told her that he
- 54:39had taken refuge under Jehovah’s wings
- 54:42and ordered his workers to treat her
- 54:44well and leave her alone.
- 54:48That night Ruth told Naomi everything
- 54:51and Naomi felt hope for the first time
- 54:54in a long time.
- 54:57Boas was a relative of her late husband
- 55:00and God’s law.
- 55:02He protected young widows.
- 55:06A close relative could marry her so that
- 55:09the man and the family name and
- 55:11inheritance would not be lost.
- 55:15Naomi explained to Ruth what she was to
- 55:18do.
- 55:19Although the custom seemed strange and
- 55:22even intimidating to her, Ruth obeyed.
- 55:26That night she went to the threshing
- 55:28floor where the men slept beside the
- 55:30freshly harvested grain.
- 55:33She quietly approached Boas and lay down
- 55:36at his feet.
- 55:38When he awoke, she humbly reminded him
- 55:41of the law and asked him to act as a
- 55:44kinsman-redeemer.
- 55:48Boas saw her nervousness, but also her
- 55:50courage and her loyal love for Jehovah
- 55:52and for Naomi.
- 55:55He told her that he wanted to marry her
- 55:57, although he had to settle a legal
- 55:59matter first, because there was another
- 56:02relative who had priority.
- 56:05The next day, Boas went to the city gate
- 56:07to see the elders.
- 56:10The other relative declined, fearing
- 56:12that it would affect his own inheritance
- 56:14.
- 56:15Boas gladly accepted the responsibility
- 56:17,
- 56:20approached Ruth, and was married.
- 56:22In time a son, Obed, was born.
- 56:25Naomi took the child in her arms. arms
- 56:28and loved him with all her heart.
- 56:32The woman who had returned with nothing
- 56:35now had a family.
- 56:38Obet became the grandfather of King
- 56:41David and centuries later the ancestor
- 56:44of the Messiah.
- 56:47Jehovah generously rewarded the courage
- 56:50and loyalty of Naomi and Ruth.
- 56:56Question for this study.
- 57:01In what ways did Naomi and Ruth
- 57:03demonstrate courage?
- 57:06Answers.
- 57:10I believe that Naomi was brave in
- 57:12returning alone and as an adult to a
- 57:14place where she did not know what
- 57:17awaited her.
- 57:19She could have let her daughters-in-law
- 57:21accompany her for convenience, but she
- 57:23thought of them first and encouraged
- 57:25them to rebuild their lives.
- 57:29Sometimes we think of courage as facing
- 57:31danger, but it is also letting go of
- 57:34what one needs for the love of others.
- 57:38Naomi did it with a broken heart and
- 57:41that teaches me that one can be strong
- 57:44even when one is crying inside.
- 57:49I am impressed by Ruth's courage in
- 57:51leaving everything behind.
- 57:54Her country, her culture, her family and
- 57:58her gods.
- 58:00And she did it without guarantees, not
- 58:03knowing if Israel would accept.
- 58:06Changing her life. For the love of
- 58:08Jehovah and loyalty to a person requires
- 58:10enormous courage.
- 58:13When someone today leaves a comfortable
- 58:16path to serve God, they face ridicule or
- 58:19misunderstanding, and they are like Ruth
- 58:21.
- 58:23She teaches us that faith is
- 58:25demonstrated by concrete decisions, even
- 58:27if they are scary.
- 58:32Question: Why is it said that the law of
- 58:34gathering the leftovers of the fields
- 58:37was something special in that region?
- 58:41Answers:
- 58:44What strikes me most is that this law
- 58:47showed how Jehovah thinks.
- 58:51At that time, in the neighboring towns,
- 58:53the landowner would keep everything for
- 58:55himself.
- 58:58But Jehovah asked the landowners to
- 58:59leave the edges of the field unharvested
- 59:02for the poor.
- 59:04That shows that God cares about those in
- 59:07need.
- 59:09To me, that is a beautiful choice.
- 59:11Generosity is not an optional favor, it
- 59:14is part of a life that pleases God.
- 59:18Another special thing is that this law
- 59:22protected dignity.
- 59:25The poor did not have to beg or
- 59:27humiliate themselves.
- 59:28They could work to earn their food.
- 59:32Rook would get up early, bend down, pick
- 59:35up ear by ear, and return with what he
- 59:39had. She earned it with her effort.
- 59:42That gave her value as a person.
- 59:46Today, when we help someone, it is worth
- 59:49considering how to do so without taking
- 59:51away their dignity, seeking to make them
- 59:53feel useful and respected.
- 59:58Question.
- 59:59How do we know that Ruth did not go to
- 1:00:02see Boas with bad intentions?
- 1:00:05Answers.
- 1:00:08The first thing is that Ruth followed
- 1:00:10the instructions of Naomi, an older and
- 1:00:12respected woman who knew the law well.
- 1:00:15She did not act on impulse or out of
- 1:00:18personal interest.
- 1:00:20She obeyed advice based on what Jehovah
- 1:00:23had established to protect widows.
- 1:00:27When someone acts within what God's law
- 1:00:30says and with the advice of wise people
- 1:00:33, their intentions are clear.
- 1:00:36This teaches me to seek advice before
- 1:00:39making important decisions.
- 1:00:42The second is how Boas treated her.
- 1:00:46He was a man of integrity and did not
- 1:00:49scold her or get scandalized.
- 1:00:52On the contrary, he praised her and told
- 1:00:54her that her loyalty was even greater
- 1:00:57than she had shown before.
- 1:01:00Boas recognized that Ruth was not
- 1:01:02looking for rich or poor young men, but
- 1:01:05rather to honor the family of her
- 1:01:08deceased husband.
- 1:01:10If a righteous man understood his
- 1:01:12gesture, we can be sure that his heart
- 1:01:16was pure.
- 1:01:19Question, why is it significant that
- 1:01:22Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter?”"
- 1:01:26Answers.
- 1:01:28To me, those words were like a hug.
- 1:01:32Ruth was a foreigner, poor, and a widow
- 1:01:35.
- 1:01:37She probably felt insecure among
- 1:01:39strangers.
- 1:01:41And an important man like Boaz spoke to
- 1:01:44her with tenderness like a father.
- 1:01:48With two words he made her feel accepted
- 1:01:52and protected. Sometimes a kind word
- 1:01:55changes someone's day.
- 1:01:58I can ask myself, who can I speak to
- 1:02:01today with kindness so that they feel
- 1:02:04valued?
- 1:02:06It also teaches me how Boaz treated
- 1:02:09people regardless of their position.
- 1:02:13He owned the field and she was a simple
- 1:02:16gleaner, but he did not look down on her
- 1:02:20.
- 1:02:20Jehovah treats his servants with that
- 1:02:24same kindness and those who imitate him
- 1:02:27reflect it in their way of speaking.
- 1:02:31Those in authority as parents, elders,
- 1:02:34or leaders can learn from Boaz.
- 1:02:38Authority is best used when accompanied
- 1:02:41by kindness.
- 1:02:45How was Boaz different from the other
- 1:02:48relative in agreeing to marry Ruth?
- 1:02:53Answers.
- 1:02:55The big difference is in what each one
- 1:02:58thought first.
- 1:03:01The other relative looked at what he
- 1:03:03would lose, for example, money,
- 1:03:06inheritances and comfort.
- 1:03:09Boas focused on what he could give.
- 1:03:13When one puts love above pocketbook,
- 1:03:15decisions change.
- 1:03:19Boas took on responsibilities that did
- 1:03:21not benefit him and he did so with joy.
- 1:03:26That makes me think of how many times he
- 1:03:28passed up an opportunity to help for
- 1:03:30fear of losing something.
- 1:03:33Another difference is that Boas thought
- 1:03:36of Elimelet’s family, not just his own.
- 1:03:40He knew that Ruth’s son would carry the
- 1:03:43deceased’s name and that what he would
- 1:03:46build would not be for his own glory.
- 1:03:50That is true generosity. Working so that
- 1:03:53another person receives honor.
- 1:03:56Today we can imitate him by supporting
- 1:03:58others without seeking recognition and
- 1:04:00rejoicing when they advance.
- 1:04:05Question.
- 1:04:07Ruth was hard-working and grateful.
- 1:04:12How does her example help us when we
- 1:04:13have money problems?
- 1:04:16Answers.
- 1:04:19Ruth expected a miracle.
- 1:04:22She went out to work.
- 1:04:24I believe that when money is tight, the
- 1:04:28first thing is to do what we can
- 1:04:30honestly.
- 1:04:32Even if the work is humble, Ruth bent
- 1:04:35down in the field and did not feel less
- 1:04:38than because of it.
- 1:04:40And Jehovah blessed his efforts.
- 1:04:43We should not be ashamed of any work.
- 1:04:45Honest.
- 1:04:47Every day of sincere effort counts
- 1:04:50before God.
- 1:04:52Ruth was also grateful.
- 1:04:55When Boaz treated her well, she showed
- 1:04:58him respect and appreciation.
- 1:05:02It’s easy to complain when money is
- 1:05:04tight, but gratitude helps us see what
- 1:05:07we do have.
- 1:05:09Health, family, a plate of food, friends
- 1:05:13.
- 1:05:15Giving thanks out loud to Jehovah and to
- 1:05:18those who help us restores our peace and
- 1:05:21protects us from the bitterness that
- 1:05:23sometimes comes with crisis.
- 1:05:31Ruth encouraged Naomi when she was
- 1:05:33devastated, and Naomi accepted the help
- 1:05:36with humility.
- 1:05:37Question, what do we learn from each of
- 1:05:40them?
- 1:05:41Answers.
- 1:05:44From Ruth I learn that encouragement is
- 1:05:47being present.
- 1:05:49She didn’t give big speeches.
- 1:05:51She stayed by Naomi’s side.
- 1:05:55She worked for both of them and listened
- 1:05:57.
- 1:05:58Even when Naomi’s words were harsh.
- 1:06:02When someone is suffering, sometimes you
- 1:06:04don’t need to say much.
- 1:06:07It suffices to accompany patiently.
- 1:06:11That could be a visit, a phone call, or
- 1:06:13a shared meal.
- 1:06:16From Naomi I learn that letting yourself
- 1:06:19be helped is also courageous.
- 1:06:22She could have locked herself away in
- 1:06:25her pain, but accepted Ruth’s support
- 1:06:29and followed her decisions.
- 1:06:33Many people, out of pride, reject help
- 1:06:37when they need it most.
- 1:06:41Naomi’s humility opened the door to the
- 1:06:44blessings that came later.
- 1:06:47If you are going through a tough time,
- 1:06:51allow others to help you too.
- 1:06:55Question.
- 1:06:57In what other ways can we imitate the
- 1:07:00courage of Naomi and Ruth?
- 1:07:03Answers.
- 1:07:05We can imitate them by being loyal when
- 1:07:08things get tough.
- 1:07:10Ruth was loyal to Naomi and Jehovah when
- 1:07:13no one forced her to.
- 1:07:16Today that might mean standing firm for
- 1:07:19what is right, even when people make fun
- 1:07:22of her at work, school, or in her family
- 1:07:25.
- 1:07:26Loyalty is most noticeable in difficult
- 1:07:29times, and Jehovah values it greatly.
- 1:07:33Another way is to start over.
- 1:07:37Naomi returned to Bethlehem empty-handed
- 1:07:40, but she came back.
- 1:07:43Many of us have experienced losses,
- 1:07:46mistakes, or disappointments, and
- 1:07:48getting back up takes courage.
- 1:07:51Every small step counts.
- 1:07:55If you feel weak today, remember that
- 1:07:58Jehovah blessed Naomi after the storm,
- 1:08:01and he can help you too.
- 1:08:06What does this story teach me about
- 1:08:09Jehovah?
- 1:08:11It teaches me that Jehovah sees those
- 1:08:13who suffer.
- 1:08:15Naomi She felt abandoned, but he never
- 1:08:18stopped caring for her.
- 1:08:21He placed Ruth by her side and moved
- 1:08:24things so that there would be food,
- 1:08:27protection, and hope.
- 1:08:30When we think no one understands us,
- 1:08:33this story reminds us that Jehovah is
- 1:08:36attentive to every tear and acts in his
- 1:08:39own time and way.
- 1:08:42It also teaches me that Jehovah is just
- 1:08:45and merciful.
- 1:08:48His law protected the poor, widows, and
- 1:08:51strangers.
- 1:08:53It was not a cold law, but an expression
- 1:08:56of his love.
- 1:08:58Ruth, a Moabite, was accepted and
- 1:09:01blessed.
- 1:09:04This tells me that he looks at the heart
- 1:09:06, not the source, and that those who
- 1:09:08approach him with sincerity are welcome
- 1:09:10.
- 1:09:13Question.
- 1:09:15How does this story connect to Jehovah’s
- 1:09:18purpose and the main theme of the Bible
- 1:09:21?
- 1:09:24Answers.
- 1:09:25The central theme of the Bible is that
- 1:09:28Jehovah will fulfill his purpose through
- 1:09:30the kingdom of the Messiah.
- 1:09:33And in this story, a small, broken
- 1:09:36family becomes a link in that chain.
- 1:09:40From the marriage of Boas and Ruth came
- 1:09:44Obet, then David, and centuries later
- 1:09:47Jesus.
- 1:09:49What seemed like a family tragedy was
- 1:09:51part of it.
- 1:09:52of a much bigger plan.
- 1:09:56Question.
- 1:09:58What would you ask Naomi and Ruth when
- 1:10:00they are resurrected?
- 1:10:03Answers.
- 1:10:06I would ask Ruth what she thought as she
- 1:10:08walked to Bethlehem, leaving everything
- 1:10:10behind.
- 1:10:13I would like to know what gave her
- 1:10:15strength, what she felt when she said
- 1:10:17those strong words, and what it was like
- 1:10:19to meet Jehovah for the first time.
- 1:10:23Her answer would surely strengthen my
- 1:10:25faith and help me make better decisions
- 1:10:28.
- 1:10:30I would ask Naomi, what was it like to
- 1:10:33go from bitterness to joy?
- 1:10:37I would like to know when she began to
- 1:10:39feel that Jehovah had not forgotten her
- 1:10:41and what it felt like to hold Obet for
- 1:10:43the first time.
- 1:10:45I believe that her testimony would
- 1:10:47encourage many who are at their worst
- 1:10:49today
- 1:10:51not to give up.
- 1:10:53And I would ask both of them together
- 1:10:55how they managed to support each other
- 1:10:58in the hardest days.
- 1:11:01I would like to learn how they spoke to
- 1:11:03each other, how they forgave each other
- 1:11:05, and how they kept hope alive.
- 1:11:09I am sure that their advice on
- 1:11:11friendship and loyalty would be a
- 1:11:13treasure for the entire congregation and
- 1:11:16for my own family.
- 1:11:21Thank you very much, dear brothers and
- 1:11:24sisters, for joining us on the
- 1:11:26Congregational Bible study for this week
- 1:11:29.
- 1:11:30Remember, we've been looking at chapter
- 1:11:3415, Naomi and Ruth.
- 1:11:37The theme was they stuck together
- 1:11:39through the tough times.
- 1:11:43See you next time.
- 1:11:47Take good care of yourselves.
