Retro Style, Modern Comfort – Nyxi Warrior Review | Best GameCube Style Switch Controller? — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This is the Nixie Warrior Bluetooth
- 0:03controller for the Nintendo Gamecube,
- 0:05Nintendo Switch, Wii, and PC. And I want
- 0:08to thank Nixie for sending this out for
- 0:10purposes of review. We're doing a quick
- 0:12unboxing and then we're going to hop
- 0:13into game where I'm going to play five
- 0:15different games for you on the Nintendo
- 0:16Switch. We're going to take a look and
- 0:18see how this thing performs. Now, right
- 0:19off the bat, the look of this controller
- 0:22is a thing of absolute beauty. I love
- 0:26the layout. I love both the familiarity
- 0:28of the GameCube layout as well as being,
- 0:31you know what, kind of procontroller-ish
- 0:32as well. Like, it feels like a modern
- 0:34controller, but with the sensibilities
- 0:36of the Gamecube. One of the cool things
- 0:38about it as well is it has these
- 0:39switches on the back that will allow you
- 0:41to toggle the shoulder buttons from
- 0:43digital to analog inputs, which I think
- 0:45is pretty great. Inside the package,
- 0:46you're going to get this GameCube
- 0:48dongle, so you can actually attach it to
- 0:49the GameCube or the Wii to play it
- 0:50wirelessly, which is really nice. And
- 0:52it's also going to come with
- 0:54customizable back buttons. So, there is
- 0:56a plate on the back that is pretty easy
- 0:58to pop off as you're going to see here.
- 1:00Initially, it comes with this one on
- 1:02here where you're actually able to
- 1:03program these buttons to perform
- 1:04different actions, but you can hot swap
- 1:06this one in. So, it's just a flat bag so
- 1:08you don't have to worry about it. And
- 1:09you can see how quick it is to pop in
- 1:12and pop out. It's pretty great. But
- 1:14that's not where the customization stops
- 1:16because there are also customizable
- 1:18options for your joystick. So you can
- 1:20hop swap out the hexagonal ports that
- 1:23are around the sticks and the smaller C
- 1:25stick and just put in the regular size
- 1:27joystick and a standard circle around
- 1:30the joystick itself. Now inside here are
- 1:32Hall effect sensors which is really
- 1:34nice. So it's actually got a really
- 1:35really smooth control layout. It's super
- 1:37easy to pop things in and out. You just
- 1:40put them in, push it down, and put your
- 1:42new collar on to make sure that your
- 1:43joysticks are going to be held in place
- 1:44where they need to be. Now, I will say
- 1:47some of the games you're going to see,
- 1:49this isn't an ideal layout for certain
- 1:51gameplay types. Like, I was very excited
- 1:53to get this and I was also very excited
- 1:55because I got the Capcom fighting
- 1:56collection in the same day, and I was
- 1:58all excited to hop into a fighting game
- 2:00and try them out. And that you you'll
- 2:02hear me say several times, this was not
- 2:04the ideal choice, and it really wasn't
- 2:05because the layout for a GameCube
- 2:07controller is a little funky. As you can
- 2:09see, you do have that kind of kidney X
- 2:11and Yshaped buttons around the A and B,
- 2:14the enlarged A and the small B off to
- 2:15the side, which is while one of my
- 2:18favorite controllers of all time, it
- 2:19does take a little bit of kind of
- 2:21re-education for yourself as you're
- 2:23playing to get back immediately into the
- 2:25GameCube layout. Now, I wanted to show
- 2:28this off here because we're going to
- 2:29show pairing, how quick and easy it is,
- 2:31as well as the actual configuration when
- 2:34you go in to test out your button inputs
- 2:36because I was curious to see how quickly
- 2:38responsive this thing was. You know, I
- 2:40have gotten some other controllers that
- 2:42were a little bit lazy, a little bit
- 2:44kind of sluggish in the way that they
- 2:46worked. And I am such a big fan of
- 2:48Nixie. I knew that wasn't going to be
- 2:50the case here because like I I say later
- 2:52on in this video, I actually have used
- 2:54their Joy-Con attachments and those work
- 2:56fantastically well, but I've never used
- 2:57one of their standalone controllers
- 2:59until today. And you can see exactly how
- 3:01responsive this is. Like I am mashing
- 3:03these buttons to see how quickly these
- 3:05things are showing up and it's great.
- 3:06And you can even see the D-pad inputs
- 3:08here as well. But what do you say? Let's
- 3:09hop into game now and let's take a look
- 3:11at Capcom Fighting Collection 2. All
- 3:14right, we're going to hop in a game now
- 3:16and we're going to be using the Nixie
- 3:18Warrior. And I can't think of a better
- 3:19way to give a controller a real test
- 3:21than by playing a fighting game. So,
- 3:23we're going to hop into the brand new
- 3:24Capcom Fighting Collection 2, which I
- 3:26just got in the mail yesterday. Very
- 3:28excited to check this one out. None of
- 3:30these games are designed for a Gamecube
- 3:31style layout. So, this this could be a
- 3:33bit of a challenge. I don't know that
- 3:34I've played a whole lot of uh
- 3:38Capcom styled fighting games on a
- 3:40GameCube controller, but we're going to
- 3:41you know what? We're going to give it a
- 3:42shot. Let's just play a little Capcom
- 3:44verse SNK Millennium Fight 2. All right,
- 3:47so L. Oh
- 3:50boy, the Gamecube controller is not
- 3:53great for fighting games. Always SNK for
- 3:57my
- 3:59groove. All right, who do I want to use?
- 4:02We got to start with
- 4:03Jokashi. We'll go with King
- 4:08Sakura.
- 4:10We'll do
- 4:16uh yeah, we'll go vice. All right.
- 4:19Fighting against my Shiranui of the
- 4:20Shiranui school and
- 4:27Ryu. All right.
- 4:30Um the control is great. Uh it's just
- 4:32not an optimal layout for a fighting
- 4:34game. We're going to finish the round
- 4:35out and then we'll we'll hop over to uh
- 4:38we'll hop over to something else. This
- 4:39was This was a poor Oh. Oh, that's going
- 4:42to leave a
- 4:44mark. This a poor poor decision by me
- 4:49here. Okay. Okay. Okay,
- 4:54Ryu. Okay. All right. Not uh not the
- 4:57best start for uh not for the
- 4:59controller. The controller is fine. Not
- 5:00a great start for uh yours truly. Uh as
- 5:03this was clearly not the right game to
- 5:06go with. Uh, we're going to close that
- 5:08out. All right, there she is. It's
- 5:12Samus,
- 5:16everybody. Such an iconic outfit, an
- 5:19iconic character. Um, and just a a
- 5:23fun, you know, like it's just one of
- 5:25those one of those series where as much
- 5:28as I I initially did not enjoy Prime and
- 5:31I did not like the first Metroid, like
- 5:33pretty much everything else is one of
- 5:36those things where I just look at it and
- 5:38I go, "This is Nintendo at their
- 5:40absolute best." Everyone always defaults
- 5:43to things like, and you know, and
- 5:45rightfully so. It's one of those series.
- 5:47Sorry, I I'm I promise I'm here. Uh,
- 5:50it's one of those series where it's just
- 5:54a a thing that it's kind of Nintendo at
- 5:57their best, right? Like
- 6:01it's so many people think of Mario and
- 6:05Mario adjacent stuff and Zelda and you
- 6:08know, rightfully so. Those are amazing
- 6:10series, some of the best series ever
- 6:12made. But for me, it's when Nintendo
- 6:15kind of steps out of their comfort zone
- 6:17and you get stuff
- 6:18like like a Metroid or like a Star
- 6:22Tropics, you know, where it's these are
- 6:24games that didn't have a huge backing
- 6:26behind him or some frequently feel like
- 6:28they don't have a huge backing behind
- 6:29them. And I know a lot of people are
- 6:31going to laugh at me to to to say
- 6:35something like that, especially
- 6:36considering that, you know, Metroid is
- 6:38one of their, you know, signature IP
- 6:41series and certainly not uh certainly
- 6:43not uh Star Tropics, but um you know,
- 6:47when when I when I stop and look at the
- 6:50things that Nintendo does, they so
- 6:53frequently just kind of focus on stuff
- 6:56like Mario, like Zelda, like Mario Kart.
- 7:00This is a nice controller. One of the
- 7:02things I'm really excited about though,
- 7:03uh, with this is I I'm I'm looking
- 7:06forward to trying this on the Switch 2
- 7:08when it releases because it does have
- 7:09those back paddle buttons. Um, not
- 7:12something I typically use in games. It's
- 7:14just
- 7:16not I don't know. It's just never been
- 7:18something I really care about, but
- 7:20um I just think it's kind of cool that
- 7:23they're there. Like it's nice to have
- 7:24them as an option. I kind of want to hop
- 7:26into something that I know is going to
- 7:28give the analog sticks a workout because
- 7:29these feel really nice in hand, but I
- 7:32want to get them in game to see how they
- 7:33are. And we're going to start things off
- 7:34with we love Kodamari or we heart
- 7:36Kodamari. I don't actually know which
- 7:38one it is. I'm going to go with love
- 7:40because we heart Kadamari just sounds
- 7:41dumb. And there he is, ladies and
- 7:43gentlemen, the king of all cosmos, your
- 7:46father. Uh, and a cosmic up. That's
- 7:50basically his whole MMO.
- 7:54Oh, it's a coffee
- 7:58bean. I must not have saved because that
- 8:01is not my first ever roll
- 8:05up or I played under a different
- 8:08account. That's probably what it is. Uh,
- 8:10so far so good. This feels really nice.
- 8:12Um, oh man, Kyoza sounds good.
- 8:16Uh, can you tell I'm playing this before
- 8:18lunch? Um,
- 8:23uh, so it it's it's a game that
- 8:26it's, you know, if if it doesn't control
- 8:29well, if it doesn't feel right, you're
- 8:31going to notice. Um, and Mercifully,
- 8:34this one feels really good so far, which
- 8:36is a nice uh a nice thing. Like, it's
- 8:39it's one of those franchises where
- 8:42controls are so imperative to your game
- 8:44success. like my PS2 controller started
- 8:47to crap the bed uh when I was playing
- 8:49Katamari and it was so noticeable that
- 8:52uh something was wrong. Um because any
- 8:55kind of drift, any kind of just poor
- 8:58performance is going to make the game
- 9:00miserable to play. Um but I'm I'm very
- 9:04pleased. Yep. And you can jump just by
- 9:05clicking the sticks. I'm very pleased so
- 9:07far with this. This feels fantastic. And
- 9:09you know, it's a fun game, man. Like I
- 9:11just I love Oh, what? Come here. We got
- 9:14a
- 9:15cousin. Nice. We captured a cousin. Uh,
- 9:19one of the things that is uh uh a kind
- 9:22of a a landmark in every Kodamari game
- 9:25is that as you play, you need to roll up
- 9:27presents and cousins. Um, it's just
- 9:30things to collect. You know, it's at the
- 9:31end of the day, these are just
- 9:32collectathon games. Like that is the
- 9:34entire point of the game is to collect
- 9:37things and roll them up and stick them
- 9:39to your Kadamari as you play. Uh, it's
- 9:41just a bizarro way to do it. All right,
- 9:43what better way to test out the analog
- 9:47or digital buttons on this controller,
- 9:49which I I love that it's adjustable on
- 9:50the fly uh than a racing game. And one
- 9:53of my favorites on the Switch is
- 9:54Slipstream. Uh I also love Horizon Chase
- 9:56Turbo, but I just talked about that in a
- 9:57video last week. So, we're going to play
- 9:59a little bit of Slipstream here now. And
- 10:01uh yeah, we're going to go for a bit of
- 10:02a drive and see how it works. My car is
- 10:05cooler,
- 10:07though. Oh, this is this is super tight.
- 10:09This feels really nice. uh especially in
- 10:12those kind of claustrophobic corners
- 10:13like that in those little alleyways that
- 10:15we're driving through with the the
- 10:16shrubs on each side. Uh it just it feels
- 10:19good to have a responsive controller
- 10:21going. Like not that my Pro Controller
- 10:22isn't. My Pro Controller is fine, but uh
- 10:25it is definitely showing its age. I've
- 10:26had it since launch day and to have
- 10:29something brand new with Hall effect
- 10:30sticks where it's just you just kind of
- 10:33glide into where you're going is is a
- 10:35really nice feeling.
- 10:37Oh, now we're going to rewind a bit
- 10:40here.
- 10:46As you see there, since I rewound and
- 10:48ran out of my rewind meter, uh I was not
- 10:50able to do so again when I crash into
- 10:53the exact same spot as I did before. Um
- 10:56I will say that is something you will
- 10:58find you do very regularly in this game
- 11:00is you crash into the same thing. Uh I
- 11:03haven't seen this one yet. Let's go to
- 11:04Akiyama and see how that level
- 11:08is. Yeah. So, like like I was saying uh
- 11:11before on those very
- 11:13claustrophobic turns like I had there
- 11:16where I wrecked out, it's nice to have a
- 11:18responsive controller because I feel
- 11:19like I'm able to correct a little bit
- 11:22better. Um and like you know, like I
- 11:25said, not that my Pro Controller is bad,
- 11:27but it's definitely showing its age. And
- 11:30it's something where for one, I'm
- 11:31excited for the Switch 2 controller, the
- 11:33Switch 2 Pro Controller. I've got one of
- 11:34those pre-ordered. Um, so happy to get
- 11:36one of those and give that a try, which
- 11:38we'll be doing here in a couple of weeks
- 11:41um when the Switch 2 launches. But yeah,
- 11:45it'll be uh it'll be nice to see what
- 11:47that one's capable of. Like uh
- 11:49everything I've seen has said uh for
- 11:52people that have actually had it
- 11:53hands-on and tried it out. Oh, let's go
- 11:55to Edinburgh. Uh have said it's a really
- 11:59remarkable controller for the Switch 2.
- 12:01um that the sticks are fantastic even
- 12:04though they're not Hall effect. Uh or at
- 12:05least they're not stated to be Hall
- 12:08effect. I don't think Nintendo has
- 12:10confirmed that they're not. They might
- 12:11have. And if they have, I just didn't
- 12:13see it. But
- 12:15um everyone I know who has played it
- 12:18hands-on and whose videos I have seen
- 12:19that have played it hands-on say it's uh
- 12:21an absolutely fantastic controller. Uh,
- 12:25and the stuff that it does, uh, exceeds
- 12:29what the original Switch 2 or what the
- 12:31original Switch Pro controller was
- 12:32capable of doing. So, that's pretty
- 12:34pretty impressive. Um, I'm excited to
- 12:38take it out for a spin. I'm I'm I'm I
- 12:40just can't wait for that controller and
- 12:41that console to get here. Uh, and I'm
- 12:43curious about this controller as well to
- 12:44see if I can pair it uh to the Switch 2
- 12:46and see what functionality I'm going to
- 12:48be able to kind of bring forward with
- 12:49it. Especially having those back buttons
- 12:52just kind of in place already. Um, I
- 12:55think that's neat
- 12:56and being able to have those there and
- 12:58remap to them will be pretty cool. We
- 13:01are officially in a race against time
- 13:02for my camera dying. And I know I'm I'm
- 13:04being an idiot here and just trying to
- 13:06get as much done on one battery as I
- 13:08can, but uh I like to have fun and this
- 13:11is how I'm entertaining myself today.
- 13:13All right, so we're going to hop into
- 13:14Super Mario 3D Allstars. And since this
- 13:16is a GameCube styled controller, why not
- 13:19play a GameCube styled game? So, we are
- 13:21going to give uh our fair shake to what
- 13:25is actually one of my favorite Mario
- 13:26games in Super Mario Sunshine. I know a
- 13:28lot of people hate it. Uh, I think a lot
- 13:31of people are dumb. Uh, because I
- 13:33absolutely love this game. I I thought
- 13:35the the look of the game was fantastic.
- 13:37I thought the styling on the game was
- 13:38amazing. I I really enjoyed the controls
- 13:41and it's just one of those games that I
- 13:43like. Uh, I'm going to start from jump
- 13:45cuz it's been a long time since I played
- 13:46and I do not know where I'm at on it.
- 13:48Uh, so we're just going to start a brand
- 13:50new game. Uh, and we will see how things
- 13:53look on Isaino. And clearly I have not
- 13:57played this much uh because I just kind
- 13:59of tend to hop into my GameCube
- 14:01original. Uh down the road we are going
- 14:03to test this controller out on the
- 14:05Gamecube. Um but I'm going to do that in
- 14:07a separate video because this one's
- 14:08already getting kind of long. Uh but
- 14:10yeah, we're going to give uh our fair
- 14:12shake with the Nixie Warrior Gamecube
- 14:15discs and see how it performs. Oh, I
- 14:18jumped in. I still like the water in
- 14:21Mario Sunshine, man. I still think it
- 14:23looks good. Like I I I am always
- 14:26impressed by the water physics in
- 14:28something like uh Wave Race uh 64 and
- 14:31Wave Race uh Bluetorm.
- 14:34Um what is that? Do
- 14:37something. I think your friend is dumb.
- 14:41I don't need to help you. All right,
- 14:43let's go get
- 14:45this. Let's meet Flood. Hi, Floody.
- 14:50Power up. The power up is complete.
- 14:54Glven. Glven. Uh-huh. Yep. Yep. Yep. EAD
- 14:58is, I think, one of the biggest villains
- 15:00in Mario. Now, I have a whole theory
- 15:02about this because anytime there is an
- 15:05issue, just magically, there's some kind
- 15:07of Egad tech there to fix it out. He's
- 15:09like the Lex Luthor of the Mario
- 15:10universe. Uh, I I've thought about that
- 15:12ever since um uh probably Luigi's
- 15:15Mansion 2. uh when I kind of realized I
- 15:17was like, "Wait a second. Anytime
- 15:19there's something that goes on in any
- 15:20Mario game that he's involved, uh
- 15:23whether it's the Luigi's Mansion games,
- 15:25uh this one here, where he's just
- 15:26peripherilally involved with with Flood
- 15:28here, or in the Paper Mario games where
- 15:30uh his his stuff, uh not Paper Mario,
- 15:33the Mario and Luigi games where his
- 15:34stuff takes part or is is a factor is
- 15:37like, why does this man always have a
- 15:39solution to a problem that didn't exist
- 15:41till his crap showed up? Um, I think I
- 15:44think he is a
- 15:53villain. This feels really good. I'm not
- 15:55going to lie. Like I I forgot that they
- 15:58don't really uh make use of the analog
- 16:03stick on the Switch version of it, which
- 16:05kind of stinks. But
- 16:07um it's still fun. I still love this
- 16:10game, man. Like it's just it's just one
- 16:12of those games that to me is kind of a
- 16:16signature Mario
- 16:20experience and
- 16:25splat.
- 16:26Hooray. He has been defeated and now I
- 16:30will be arrested. Also, I love Shine
- 16:32Sprites. I like Shine Sprites better
- 16:33than Stars. I don't know, man. I just I
- 16:36think this game gets a bad rap. I think
- 16:37people hate on it for no reason. I don't
- 16:39know why. Uh, but I also don't love
- 16:41Galaxy. Like, I I think Galaxy is good.
- 16:44I like Galaxy a hell of a lot more than
- 16:46I like uh Mario 64. I don't think Mario
- 16:4964 is a good game. I think it's an
- 16:51important game. I don't necessarily
- 16:52think it's good, but I love Sunshine and
- 16:54and I think a lot of it has to do with
- 16:56the style. Like, I really like the
- 16:57presentation. I like the look. I like
- 16:59the sound. I like the gameplay. I just
- 17:01like it and it plays really well with
- 17:03the Nixie Warrior. All right, let's get
- 17:05back to the camera now. We're going to
- 17:06get back to the desk. Uh, I'm going to
- 17:08write my thoughts down, uh, clean up a
- 17:10little bit, and, uh, we'll recap my
- 17:12thoughts on the Nixie Warrior. Okay,
- 17:14final thoughts now on the Nixie Warrior.
- 17:17Now, I'm a big fan of Nixie. I have
- 17:19their Joy-Con connectors that look like
- 17:21GameCube controllers, and I think
- 17:23they're fantastic. Some of my favorite
- 17:24Joy-Con connectors out there, and I
- 17:27won't lie to you, despite the fact that
- 17:28I love that, I was a little skeptical
- 17:29about this controller. And while I
- 17:31haven't put it through its entire paces
- 17:33yet, I still do need to test out PC,
- 17:35Wii, GameCube. For a Switch controller,
- 17:38this thing is pretty choice. I did
- 17:40really like it in Metroid Prime. I loved
- 17:42it in Mario Sunshine. It is not an ideal
- 17:45controller for fighting games, as I
- 17:46showed with uh the Capcom fighting
- 17:48collection, but I think for other game
- 17:51options and other gameplay
- 17:52methodologies, you're going to have a
- 17:54good time. I am very curious to see how
- 17:56this performs when the Switch 2 launches
- 17:59so I can actually try it out using the
- 18:01online GameCube library. Do you have the
- 18:04Nixie Warrior? Let me know in the
- 18:06comments down below. Do you like Nixie
- 18:07controllers? Have you used any in the
- 18:08past? I want to thank them for sending
- 18:09this for purposes of review. They didn't
- 18:12approve anything on this video. They
- 18:13said, "Hey, we're going to send this to
- 18:14you. We want you to do a review. Put a
- 18:15video out on it." So, I did. Check links
- 18:18in the description below if you're
- 18:19interested in picking one up. Uh let me
- 18:20know if you've used one before. If this
- 18:22is your first time here, check out the
- 18:23link on screen to see some more
- 18:24controller reviews that I've done in the
- 18:25past. And until next time, remember to
- 18:27play more games, stay square, and take
- 18:29care.
