restocking my home in remote Alaska for winter! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:14Good morning everybody from Anchorage,
- 0:17Alaska. Jared and I are back from St.
- 0:19Louis. We got back last night at like
- 0:21midnight and I woke up at like 7:30 cuz
- 0:25it's like what, 10:30 on my body.
- 0:28Um so, we're still not completely
- 0:30adjusted to time change yet. I am very
- 0:32tired. I think Jared's a little tired,
- 0:33too. But, these next few days we're
- 0:36going to be here in Anchorage and we're
- 0:37going to be doing some shopping, getting
- 0:39ready for wintertime because if you're
- 0:41new around here, we live in the middle
- 0:42of nowhere in Alaska where the nearest
- 0:44store is 200 miles away and you have to
- 0:47have everything flown in. There's no
- 0:48roads in or out. So, we just went
- 0:51through a very busy lodge season where
- 0:53we didn't really get to or have to make
- 0:56our food. Let's go do some shopping.
- 1:00We have a few days here in Anchorage.
- 1:01Come join us
- 1:03for the whole ordeal.
- 1:07Our first stop today is the Costco
- 1:09Business Center in Takotna. There is a
- 1:11difference between Business Center and
- 1:13wholesale. A lot of people don't know
- 1:15about the Business Center and it's
- 1:17actually more catered towards like
- 1:20restaurant style businesses. So, you'll
- 1:21see aisles that are just like
- 1:24pots and pans and things like that. So,
- 1:26yeah, it's pretty pretty fun and
- 1:30we're going to head there first.
- 1:32This is not a necessity,
- 1:34but oh my goodness,
- 1:36it's all like Alaska soda.
- 1:40I think we're going to have to do it.
- 1:47Sweet treat.
- 1:48>> I guess they
- 2:00>> I think people are going to be mad at my
- 2:02cart choices already just because it's a
- 2:04lot of
- 2:06uh snacks stuff not the healthiest
- 2:09options. Um
- 2:11that's just at the beginning of the
- 2:12stories, okay? Calm down a little bit
- 2:14before you start judging us too hard.
- 2:20This is what I mean by like restaurant
- 2:23style
- 2:24stuff. I'll show you more as we keep
- 2:26going, but
- 2:28lots of like big big packages of
- 2:31like pasta and other things. My goal
- 2:34with this trip is to fill our pantry and
- 2:37freezer up enough to where we don't have
- 2:39to do another big grocery haul for
- 2:42hopefully the whole winter or at least
- 2:44for the next 6 months.
- 2:59>> Let's buy Oh, okay. Good.
- 3:02>> Nice.
- 3:07You get two?
- 3:09Let's go ahead and get two.
- 3:20Yep, got to get all the boxes.
- 3:23I need onions, but I'm going to wait to
- 3:25go to a smaller store to get a smaller
- 3:27bag cuz this is overkill for us.
- 3:30We found some boxes that we're going to
- 3:32go to the air taxi and repackage
- 3:34everything into these once we're done
- 3:36shopping.
- 3:38This whole room right here is a big
- 3:39refrigerator. It's pretty cool.
- 3:43In this room they have things like
- 3:45berries,
- 3:47mushrooms,
- 3:52cabbages,
- 3:53all different types of cheeses.
- 3:58We're going to try this and see how it
- 4:00goes. Never had this before.
- 4:02Something at our local
- 4:04Alaska Costco. Different types of like
- 4:07Alaska
- 4:09sausages.
- 4:16Also something we need to try
- 4:19that might be yummy.
- 4:20I've never seen this before. That's
- 4:22crazy. We're not going to get it, but
- 4:24wow.
- 4:25The other The other side of that room is
- 4:27also meat, which we don't have a whole
- 4:29lot of room in our freezer right now.
- 4:30So, I'm not looking for some stuff to
- 4:33add to the freezer like meat. So, we
- 4:36have a little bit more We have a few
- 4:38more aisles to go through and then we'll
- 4:40go check out, but the cart's already
- 4:41looking pretty full.
- 4:43This is one thing I will add to my
- 4:45freezer, though. It's quick and easy
- 4:47meal.
- 4:49These are the best little bread bites
- 4:50ever and they're on sale.
- 4:53Yes, please.
- 4:55Jared knows what to do. Get all the
- 4:56boxes.
- 4:57Even if it feels like an overkill on
- 4:59boxes right now, we're definitely going
- 5:00to be filling them and we can replenish
- 5:02the stuff at the air taxi, too, cuz
- 5:04they're going to need to package stuff
- 5:05up for other people dropping off
- 5:07groceries as well.
- 5:08I do want these, but I'm going to get
- 5:10them from a smaller store cuz I don't
- 5:11need that big of a thing of them.
- 5:14Something else you'll find at
- 5:16Costco Business. It's a whole lamb.
- 5:19That's crazy. They used to hang them
- 5:22over here,
- 5:23but that's changed since a while ago.
- 5:27I have these at home already. They're so
- 5:29good and well worth it.
- 5:39I think with how full our cart's
- 5:40getting, we better go check out and take
- 5:41it to the air taxi. What do you think,
- 5:43Jared?
- 5:45Here we go.
- 5:47It's one cart. It looks much better once
- 5:50we have it all organized. Take a wild
- 5:52guess how much this one was. I'll give
- 5:53you 3 seconds. Pause the video if you
- 5:55need to.
- 5:57Okay, you ready?
- 5:59First cart,
- 6:01$536.69.
- 6:04So, not bad.
- 6:22Stop number one is complete. We
- 6:24definitely could have gone longer if we
- 6:27got a flatbed. Jared [music] literally
- 6:28suggested that in the beginning.
- 6:30I should have listened to you, babe.
- 6:32Now, something that's a little unique of
- 6:34a situation today because it is Sunday,
- 6:37the freight office at the air taxi is
- 6:38closed. So, we have to go to the
- 6:41reservations office to drop off our
- 6:43freight, which is fine.
- 6:45It's just how it is for
- 6:47today because, you know, this is like
- 6:49one of our only days to shop. But,
- 6:51that's what you're going to see
- 6:51different today in my shopping video
- 6:54compared to like previous shopping
- 6:57Costco videos. Same [music] air taxi,
- 6:59just at the reservation side. Oh my
- 7:01gosh, that's so cool.
- 7:27We're going to avoid Costco immediately
- 7:30after
- 7:31church on Sunday. Oh my gosh, it's
- 7:33probably going to be crazy busy over
- 7:34there. So, we're going to hit the
- 7:37big three, Target, Walmart, Fred Fred
- 7:40First stop, Target.
- 7:52I've actually never had that one before.
- 7:58I feel like this is going to be really
- 7:59yummy. I don't need more coffee.
- 8:01>> Pistachio?
- 8:02>> Yeah, but that actually looks really
- 8:03good. I'm going to try it.
- 8:26Look at this.
- 8:28I'm so excited about this. So pretty.
- 8:31Our haul from Target was $269.36.
- 8:37I will put a running total up here. The
- 8:39thing is
- 8:40we're not just shopping for, you know,
- 8:42necessities, also some upgrades. Oh,
- 8:46there goes Jared. Upgrades on some
- 8:47things and then also some stuff for
- 8:49Christmas because I don't know
- 8:52if and when we'll be back to go shopping
- 8:55before Christmas.
- 8:57I mean, you're going on a hunt in
- 8:58November
- 9:00but you're not going to be able to go
- 9:01shopping.
- 9:04Exactly. So, I know it's October and we
- 9:07just got stuff to carve pumpkins. We're
- 9:09also buying stuff for Christmas.
- 9:16Okay, Jared and I were literally just
- 9:18talking about the different things we
- 9:19remember in the small stores growing up
- 9:22and we're talking about how, you know,
- 9:23Walmart used to have like the fish, like
- 9:26you could buy. And he said the one back
- 9:28in Michigan had like live lobsters you
- 9:30could buy.
- 9:31Crazy. Didn't know that. Um, but I
- 9:33remember at the Fred Fred here, yeah,
- 9:35they used to have a place where you
- 9:37could literally drop off your kids and
- 9:39they'd be watched by somebody like a
- 9:41worker or whatever and then you just
- 9:43come pick up your kids afterwards when
- 9:45you're done shopping. No, it was like
- 9:47one of those places where it was like
- 9:50you literally just like dropped your kid
- 9:52off and there's like a little like mat
- 9:54and some toys and I don't remember all
- 9:56what was in there and then you could
- 9:58just like go shopping and then come pick
- 10:00up your kid after.
- 10:02And I remember like there was another
- 10:04store here in Anchorage that had like a
- 10:05TV in the corner and we would go watch
- 10:08TV while my mom shopped. I think it was
- 10:10probably like Old Navy or something at
- 10:12one of the malls.
- 10:15Crazy.
- 10:17Our second stop
- 10:19Fred Meyer.
- 10:21Should we splurge?
- 10:23I think we should.
- 10:25Our total this time around was $114.98
- 10:28and I didn't show much because most of
- 10:30what we got was Christmas gifts. I did
- 10:32get
- 10:33some roses for me
- 10:36and you guys saw the soda but also an
- 10:39Advent calendar for Jared. So we did
- 10:41this 2 years ago and we didn't do it
- 10:43last year so we're bringing it back.
- 10:45This is the one he's going to do during
- 10:47Vlogmas this year.
- 10:49Next stop
- 10:51Walmart.
- 11:00This one's my favorite right here.
- 11:02So good.
- 11:16Oh gosh.
- 11:22Crazy that the Spam is locked up at the
- 11:26Walmart here.
- 11:27For not having much uh fridge and pantry
- 11:30space
- 11:31we're doing well.
- 11:32Now we go to the toy section for uh
- 11:35Christmas gift type stuff. Um
- 11:37yeah, but sorry, I'm not going to show
- 11:39you
- 11:40what we get there, but
- 11:42uh I love Christmas.
- 11:44Nearly $200 later,
- 11:47we are done with Walmart. We're going to
- 11:49go drop off some of the fridge stuff at
- 11:51the air taxi, go to lunch, then go to my
- 11:53aunt's and grab totes so we can package
- 11:55up the non-perishable stuff to be sent
- 11:58back in totes. everybody, it is day two
- 12:01of shopping. We actually just went to
- 12:04Target to get some stuff for a
- 12:08basket
- 12:09auction that's happening at our school,
- 12:13local school in
- 12:15There's once in the fall time they do
- 12:17like a harvest fest and there's games
- 12:19for kids, a costume contest, um a cake
- 12:23walk, a basket auction, and all the
- 12:25money goes to the kids in the sports
- 12:28program. So, we grabbed a holiday-themed
- 12:32basket for my mother to be auctioned
- 12:35off. Then I also got a couple things for
- 12:37my sister as a thank you for watching
- 12:39our cats while we have been away for
- 12:41literally over 2 weeks.
- 12:44But now, we head to Costco
- 12:46and finish the rest of our shopping
- 12:49because guys,
- 12:50yesterday I meant to take you along for
- 12:52more of the day, but I was so tired. I
- 12:54was falling asleep. I guess I don't need
- 12:56this light on. I was falling asleep. I
- 12:58was barely keeping my eyes open and I
- 13:00had no motivation to film. I think just
- 13:02after traveling and the hormone crash
- 13:04and exhaustion from everything we just
- 13:07did with IVF, I was not going to keep
- 13:11going to keep going with the filming for
- 13:13the day. So, sorry for leaving you guys
- 13:15hanging, but I'm feeling much better
- 13:16today. Feeling much more like myself
- 13:20and it feels like a good day to finish
- 13:22up the shopping.
- 13:24We're here at Costco.
- 13:25If you're an executive member, so
- 13:27someone with the black card, you can get
- 13:30in at 9:00 a.m., which is so nice
- 13:32because less people, less crowded. So,
- 13:35so nice. So, that's what we're doing
- 13:38this morning. It's a little after 9:00.
- 13:42>> [sighs]
- 13:43>> Feels good to get the shopping done.
- 13:47Look what I just found.
- 13:49Costco
- 13:51and they have t-shirts.
- 13:53We're getting it.
- 14:06We just refill them, I think.
- 14:09Pretzel bagels. I've seen them online.
- 14:12Didn't think I'd have a chance to
- 14:13actually get some. So, we're going to
- 14:14get some.
- 14:18Venison?
- 14:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:22We just use a lot of this
- 14:25kind of stuff that I want to make sure
- 14:27we have plenty of it.
- 14:29I'd say get two of them.
- 14:37This one looks really yummy.
- 14:47I know. This looks really good.
- 14:55Cuz it's yummy and we eat a lot of it.
- 14:58They're doing some changes, so I have no
- 15:00idea where like all the fridge
- 15:02and freezer stuff went. Um, cuz normally
- 15:05like this is cheese and I need some very
- 15:08specific things that I'm looking for,
- 15:10like frozen veggies, um, and I haven't
- 15:12been able to find them, so
- 15:14we'll go searching.
- 15:22Okay, we're going to check out. My dad
- 15:24did call and asked if I would pick these
- 15:26up for the student government at the
- 15:29local school. So, we're going to do that
- 15:31on a separate check, but everything else
- 15:33is ours. Take a wild guess how much this
- 15:36is going to be. I'll let you guys know
- 15:37once we're checked out.
- 15:43Okay, so we just got to the air taxi.
- 15:45I've been on the phone with my dad, so
- 15:47been a little bit delayed uh giving you
- 15:49the final number. But, minus the ice
- 15:52cream that we got for student
- 15:53government, our total was $398.16.
- 15:58And that's because I used my like my
- 16:00rebates check from
- 16:03the past year. And that check was
- 16:05$132.36.
- 16:07So, that helped a lot bringing the total
- 16:09from 530 to 398.
- 16:19Mhm.
- 16:29Our very final stop for the day
- 16:34is Walmart. We're going to get cleaning
- 16:37supplies maybe a few other things, but
- 16:39mostly cleaning supplies.
- 16:49Quick connect.
- 16:52It's our last day here in Anchorage. We
- 16:54leave back to Port Alsworth today.
- 16:57And
- 16:58look
- 17:00look what's happening outside.
- 17:02Oh my gosh, you can't even see it, but
- 17:03you can see it's snowing
- 17:06out there. Oh my goodness, the roads
- 17:08aren't horrible yet.
- 17:10But, dad said tonight it's going to
- 17:12freeze, and that's when it's going to
- 17:14get slippery. So, good thing we're going
- 17:15home today.
- 18:54>> [music]
- 19:01[music]
- 19:08[music]
- 19:14>> Yeah.
- 19:14>> [music]
- 19:28[music]
- 19:33[music]
- 19:49>> We're
- 19:50home. Now we got to walk home. Jared's
- 19:52going to go get the four-wheeler and
- 19:53trailer and then come pick up
- 19:56all of our stuff
- 19:58from being gone and
- 20:00shopping.
- 20:02We're home.
- 20:06Back at the house, there's so much to
- 20:09put away. I'm going to put time lapse
- 20:11on.
- 20:13>> Okay, we're golden.
- 20:15>> That's so good. Jared, like the box
- 20:18fumbled [snorts] when Jared was bringing
- 20:19it up the stairs and it was the one with
- 20:21the eggs, but the eggs look good, so.
- 20:24Okay.
- 20:25I'm going to do the time lapse on this
- 20:26and on my phone, so.
- 20:28Here's the look before.
- 20:33Oh my gosh, and Jared is carrying all of
- 20:34this up to the second story.
- 20:38And then here we go.
- 20:40Everything else.
- 20:42It's a lot to put away.
- 20:46I'm so thankful I don't have to worry
- 20:47about dinner. My mom's going to make
- 20:49dinner and we're going to go to her
- 20:50house.
- 20:51I'm so thankful. Okay.
- 20:53>> [snorts]
- 20:54>> Time to put stuff away.
- 20:56>> [music]
- 21:08[music]
- 21:14>> We're still in the process of putting
- 21:15some of this stuff away, but I am
- 21:17exhausted. I actually have a full tote.
- 21:20How do I point? Right there?
- 21:23Full of canned goods that I don't even
- 21:25have room for in my pantry. So, [music]
- 21:27I think I'm going to have to spend a lot
- 21:29of time
- 21:30tomorrow
- 21:31>> [music]
- 21:31>> reorganizing and doing all that, but
- 21:33that's tomorrow's problem.
- 21:34>> [laughter]
- 21:35[gasps]
- 21:36[sighs]
- 21:36>> Or the next day, I don't know.
- 21:38Eventually, I'll get [music] to it. Pull
- 21:39some stuff from my freezer, so I have
- 21:41space for other stuff in my freezer that
- 21:44we just got. And [music] it's like a
- 21:46quiche I made this summer that we'll
- 21:48have for breakfast tomorrow. And then
- 21:50chicken enchiladas, [music] which I made
- 21:51this um April, and we'll use them for
- 21:56dinner tomorrow. [music]
- 21:57So.
- 21:59We're going to get into a routine. Joe
- 22:01starts work tomorrow. They're working on
- 22:03our house. I can't wait to show you
- 22:05guys.
- 22:06It looks so different. Thanks for
- 22:08joining along on this shopping journey
- 22:10as we get ready for winter. We'll see
- 22:12you guys in the next one.
- 22:14Bye.
