  1. 0:00This is a resort overview of a beer
  2. 0:02resort Hienda Alulta Gracia in the
  3. 0:04province of San Jose, Costa Rica.
  4. 0:07As soon as you depain from your
  5. 0:09commercial flight in the San Jose
  6. 0:11airport, resort staff will meet you and
  7. 0:13escort you to their private terminal.
  8. 0:16The private shuttle drive takes about 5
  9. 0:18minutes airside through the airport.
  10. 0:22[Music]
  11. 0:24Once you arrive at the private terminal,
  12. 0:26the resort staff completes the customs
  13. 0:28process for you.
  14. 0:31The terminal is stocked with cold drinks
  15. 0:33and snacks.
  16. 0:38[Music]
  17. 0:42Once the customs process is complete,
  18. 0:44you will board the private plane that
  19. 0:46will take you to the resort.
  20. 0:49The plane seats 10 passengers.
  21. 0:51[Music]
  22. 0:54and has water and snacks at each seat.
  23. 0:58The flight lasts about 20 minutes and
  24. 1:00flies over many of the local coffee
  25. 1:02plantations.
  26. 1:05Upon landing, the hotel staff will be
  27. 1:07there to pick you up at the airirstrip
  28. 1:09and small SUVs.
  29. 1:11[Music]
  30. 1:13Your baggage will be collected for you
  31. 1:15and you'll be driven up the hill to the
  32. 1:16resort.
  33. 1:19[Music]
  34. 1:21After a short drive, you will have
  35. 1:22arrived in the open air lobby. This area
  36. 1:25is the Macardo and is the central
  37. 1:27location for the resort.

  39. 1:33Check-in will take place here.
  40. 1:36It's a quick process and once complete,
  41. 1:38your host will drive you up to your
  42. 1:40cassita.
  43. 1:42The base cassita rooms consist of a
  44. 1:44combined bedroom and living space.
  45. 1:55a well-appointed bathroom,
  46. 1:59walk-in closet,
  47. 2:01and outdoor living space.
  48. 2:05We were upgraded to the casino conina
  49. 2:08suite, villa number 11.
  50. 2:10[Music]
  51. 2:13After walking in the front door, you are
  52. 2:15in an entryway
  53. 2:18with a powder room attached.
  54. 2:21The powder room has a sink and a loo.
  55. 2:27Walking through the entryway, you are in
  56. 2:29the reception room of the villa.
  57. 2:33One side of the reception room has
  58. 2:34artwork displayed, walking sticks, and
  59. 2:37umbrellas. The center cabinet is where
  60. 2:40you'll find liquor for purchase.
  61. 2:42Since Alter Gracier is an all-inclusive
  62. 2:44property, this is one of the few things
  63. 2:46at the resort that will have an extra
  64. 2:48charge.
  65. 2:51The other side of the room has more
  66. 2:53artwork displayed, binoculars, a shoe
  67. 2:56brush, and hiking gear.
  68. 3:00Just off the reception room is the
  69. 3:02kitchen.
  70. 3:04The kitchen is well stocked with
  71. 3:08a kettle and French press,
  72. 3:12local coffee and teas,
  73. 3:17snacks replaced daily,
  74. 3:19[Music]
  75. 3:20and a stocked refrigerator with
  76. 3:22alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
  77. 3:25Everything in the kitchen is
  78. 3:27complimentary except for the alcoholic
  79. 3:29beverages.
  80. 3:31Walking to the left side through the
  81. 3:33villa is the main living area.

  83. 3:39The living area has a full dining table.
  84. 3:45This is where a welcome amenity of fresh
  85. 3:46fruit was placed.
  86. 3:52There's a large living room
  87. 3:56with a couch and lounge chairs
  88. 3:59that face a flat screen TV
  89. 4:02[Music]
  90. 4:04and an electric fireplace.
  91. 4:09In the living room, you'll find a basket
  92. 4:10of games
  93. 4:12and extra blankets.
  94. 4:17On the coffee table is where the staff
  95. 4:19will leave you a map of the property
  96. 4:21[Music]
  97. 4:24and a list of the resort's weekly
  98. 4:25activities.
  99. 4:28Continuing through the living room, you
  100. 4:30enter the bedroom.
  101. 4:34The bedroom has a king bed and a bench
  102. 4:36at its foot.
  103. 4:40There are two bedside tables. Each of
  104. 4:43them have a lamp and drinking water that
  105. 4:45is replenished by housekeeping daily.
  106. 4:48One side has a Bluetooth speaker and the
  107. 4:51other has a telephone.
  108. 4:54There is a desk with a chair and a lamp.
  109. 4:57[Music]
  110. 4:59Towards the front of the room is a shay
  111. 5:02and a mounted flat screen TV.
  112. 5:07The bedroom has blackout curtains that
  113. 5:10are activated by remote control.
  114. 5:14Continuing through the bedroom, you
  115. 5:16enter the large master bathroom.
  116. 5:25The bathroom has a large vanity with two
  117. 5:27sinks,
  118. 5:29soaking tub,
  119. 5:33a walk-in shower
  120. 5:36with two separate showerheads
  121. 5:38[Music]
  122. 5:46and a separate room with a L.
  123. 5:50The bathroom is stocked with locally
  124. 5:52made toiletries,
  125. 5:55insect repellent,
  126. 5:58cotton swabs, and various disposable
  127. 6:00toiletries,
  128. 6:02two robes,
  129. 6:06hand soap and body lotion,
  130. 6:09and a hair straightener and blow dryer.
  131. 6:14Continuing through the bathroom, you
  132. 6:15enter a large walk-in closet.
  133. 6:23The closet is stocked with hangers,
  134. 6:26[Music]
  135. 6:28beach bag,
  136. 6:31a safe,
  137. 6:34two sets of slippers,
  138. 6:37a steamer,
  139. 6:40magnifying mirror,
  140. 6:43and a wellness basket with a yoga mat,
  141. 6:45yoga block, foot roller, and hot water
  142. 6:48bottles.
  143. 6:50Walking through the closet brings you
  144. 6:52back to the reception room at the front
  145. 6:53of the villa.
  146. 6:58Back in the bedroom, there are large
  147. 6:59sliding doors that open to the outdoor
  148. 7:01living area.
  149. 7:03When the doors are open, there is a
  150. 7:05screen that can be pulled to keep bugs
  151. 7:07out.
  152. 7:10The back has a large pool and looks out
  153. 7:12onto a mountain view.

  155. 7:21There's a day bed,
  156. 7:24two chairs, and a small dining set. The
  157. 7:28pool is about 4 ft deep and temperature
  158. 7:31controlled.
  159. 7:33It can be converted to a hot tub by
  160. 7:35asking your horse to increase the
  161. 7:36temperature and activating the jets
  162. 7:38through a button near the pool.

  164. 7:45Back down at the main roundabout area is
  165. 7:47the Macardo building.
  166. 7:50The Macardo is where the cafe is
  167. 7:52located.
  168. 7:56There is a barista on site during the
  169. 7:58daytime hours serving small bites.

  171. 8:09freshsqueezed juices
  172. 8:12and award-winning coffee.
  173. 8:18On one side of the macado is a large
  174. 8:21shopping area that sells items like
  175. 8:23clothing, soaps and lotions, and local
  176. 8:26art.

  178. 8:31East of the Macado is one of the
  179. 8:33resort's restaurants and pools.
  180. 8:35[Music]
  181. 8:39In low occupancy times, the restaurant
  182. 8:41is closed like it was during our visit.
  183. 8:46The pool is large
  184. 8:48[Music]
  185. 8:51and has a hot tub.
  186. 8:54There's plenty of lounge seating and a
  187. 8:56grass area in front of the pool.
  188. 9:01[Music]
  189. 9:03On the west side of the resort is the
  190. 9:05other pool and restaurant combo.
  191. 9:08Pool has lounge chairs around the
  192. 9:10perimeter that face a view of the
  193. 9:12mountains
  194. 9:15and a few private cabanas that are first
  195. 9:17come, first served.

  197. 9:21This pool area has two hot tubs.
  198. 9:25[Music]
  199. 9:36This restaurant is open for lunch and
  200. 9:37dinner each day.
  201. 9:41From its dinner menu, we tried the
  202. 9:44chicken empanada,
  203. 9:47chicken taco,
  204. 9:50flatbread with ham,
  205. 9:52Caesar salad,
  206. 9:55short rib taco,
  207. 9:58flan,
  208. 10:01and churros.
  209. 10:04Down a short staircase from this pool is
  210. 10:06the main restaurant of the resort,
  211. 10:08Groano.
  212. 10:11Grano is open for breakfast each morning
  213. 10:13and dinner each night.
  214. 10:20There is indoor seating in the dining
  215. 10:22room,
  216. 10:25an outdoor terrace with fire pits with a
  217. 10:27view of the nearby city.
  218. 10:30[Music]
  219. 10:34and an additional terrace where most
  220. 10:36people dine for breakfast.

  222. 10:46From the breakfast menu, we tried
  223. 10:48avocado toast,
  224. 10:51the waffle,
  225. 10:54fruit plate,
  226. 10:57Costa Rican puree vida breakfast, a side
  227. 11:00of bacon,
  228. 11:02banana bread,
  229. 11:05rancho fried eggs,
  230. 11:08corn and cheese scrambled eggs,
  231. 11:11and the granola.
  232. 11:14The dinner service has a rotating menu
  233. 11:16each night.
  234. 11:19Since all food is inclusive in your
  235. 11:21rate, the only charge is for alcoholic
  236. 11:23beverages.
  237. 11:28Our rate included a $100 resort
  238. 11:30credited, which we used for a bottle of
  239. 11:32wine at dinner.

  241. 11:37For dinner, we tried starter bread and
  242. 11:40spreads,
  243. 11:44heart of palm,
  244. 11:47kale and arkachi,
  245. 11:50pork belly,
  246. 11:53potato and mushroom,
  247. 11:55cacao dlce de leche,
  248. 11:58mango trese leches,
  249. 12:01mandarin avocado salad,
  250. 12:04corn paradas,
  251. 12:07local lime fish,
  252. 12:09the beef short rib,
  253. 12:12chocolate and coconut rice
  254. 12:15and baked apple terine.
  255. 12:18Much of the produce served in the resort
  256. 12:20is from the on-site garden.
  257. 12:22The garden is open for guests to walk
  258. 12:24through and explore.

  260. 12:32This is also where many of the on-site
  261. 12:34cooking classes take place.
  262. 12:37During our stay, we experienced the
  263. 12:39cacao class
  264. 12:47and the corn and guacamole class.
  265. 12:51[Music]
  266. 12:56The Macado hosted a coffee class
  267. 12:58experience which we also tried during
  268. 13:00our stay.

  270. 13:08As you make your way up the hill from
  271. 13:10the main dining areas, you pass by the
  272. 13:12resort's butterfly sanctuary.

  274. 13:19The sanctuary is open twice daily and
  275. 13:22has an expert on site to teach you about
  276. 13:24the local butterfly population.
  277. 13:30At the top of the hill is the resort's
  278. 13:32award-winning spa, Casada Aua.
  279. 13:37Casad Aua is free for all guests to
  280. 13:39enjoy, even if you don't have a
  281. 13:41treatment scheduled.

  283. 13:44Upon entry, you are in the reception
  284. 13:46area for the spa, which has some light
  285. 13:48shopping and a check-in area if you have
  286. 13:50a treatment booked.
  287. 13:53Just beyond the lobby is Cassad Aagua's
  288. 13:55main pool area.
  289. 13:59There are plenty of lounge chairs to
  290. 14:00relax by the pool and enjoy the view.

  292. 14:13Spa also provides a complimentary
  293. 14:15treatment that includes a body scrub
  294. 14:17using local soil and herbs.
  295. 14:20You apply the treatment mud at these
  296. 14:22stations and then lay on these warming
  297. 14:24tables as the solution dries.
  298. 14:30When finished, there are showers in this
  299. 14:32area to clean off. You can do this
  300. 14:34treatment as many times as you like
  301. 14:36during your stay. There are men's and
  302. 14:38women's locker rooms for use. Before
  303. 14:41entry, the spa has three different
  304. 14:42styles of robes that you can choose
  305. 14:44from.
  306. 14:45Inside, the locker rooms have sauners
  307. 14:47and steam rooms for use
  308. 14:52and plenty of spaces to store your
  309. 14:54things and get ready.
  310. 14:57The treatment rooms are located down a
  311. 14:58secluded hallway.

  313. 15:11Casata Aua is also where the resorts gym
  314. 15:14is located.
  315. 15:17[Music]
  316. 15:23The gym is a fair size with cardio
  317. 15:28and weightlifting equipment.
  318. 15:35[Music]
  319. 15:38It is well stocked with
  320. 15:41spa water,
  321. 15:43headphones for cardio machines,
  322. 15:48and a fridge with water and cool towels.
  323. 15:50The resort has miles of different trails
  324. 15:52for hiking.
  325. 15:54Many take you on paths that lead to
  326. 15:56rivers or other hidden wonders on the
  327. 15:58grounds.
  328. 16:01A short golf cart ride down from the
  329. 16:04main area is the resort's stables.
  330. 16:07Altercia houses approximately 30 horses.
  331. 16:11There are complimentary classes where
  332. 16:12you can come and learn about these
  333. 16:14horses or you can book a trail ride for
  334. 16:16an extra charge.
  335. 16:23On our last night, the resort left us a
  336. 16:25gift of stuffed animal sloths
  337. 16:28and handcrafted chocolates.
