- 0:07I'm Tamara holder and this is sports
- 0:09court today with a baseball bombshell
- 0:12ESPN's Outside the Lines has obtained a
- 0:14notebook that reportedly shows Pete Rose
- 0:17bet on baseball not only while serving
- 0:20as manager for the Cincinnati Reds which
- 0:22we already knew but now we learn also as
- 0:25a player could this be the final blow
- 0:27for his Hall of Fame bid here to away in
- 0:30is attorney Dominic Romano welcome
- 0:33thanks for being here thank you so is
- 0:35this going to ruin him uh you know it's
- 0:37part of a consistent pattern these
- 0:39allegations are part of a pattern that
- 0:42Rose has been deceiving the public and
- 0:43probably deceiving himself look it took
- 0:45him 15 years 15 years from the moment
- 0:48that he was banned in baseball
- 0:49permanently banned to 2004 when in his
- 0:53autobiography he admitted to betting but
- 0:55only he said as a manager now there
- 0:57seems to be conclusive proof conclusive
- 0:59evidence that you know back in his days
- 1:02as a player he also bet on baseball
- 1:05you're using words like evidence and
- 1:08pattern which is great for the courtroom
- 1:10but what about his fans what about the
- 1:13people that say it doesn't matter this
- 1:15is a smear campaign he's uh he's come
- 1:18clean and people are just digging say
- 1:20for example a a random analysis but
- 1:23Casey Anthony all of a sudden 10 years
- 1:25later somebody says oh I just dug up
- 1:27this sealed document is that fair well
- 1:31uh you could ask is it fair for someone
- 1:34to not be truthful to his fans and to
- 1:36the public look there are a lot of Pete
- 1:37Rose apologist there and no matter what
- 1:39he does they're going to say he belongs
- 1:41not only at the Ballpark on July 14th
- 1:43during the All-Star Game in Cincinnati
- 1:45but he belongs back in the game because
- 1:47of his accomplishments but look this is
- 1:49not the first time this is not the first
- 1:51piece of apparently damaging damning
- 1:54evidence against Pete Rose there's you
- 1:56know the Vanity Fair article from 14
- 1:59years ago
- 2:00that that 14 years ago but it's out
- 2:03there you can't take it back so I want
- 2:05to just go back to to start from the
- 2:08beginning from this 1989
- 2:12investigation why wasn't he criminally
- 2:14charged this is a document or this
- 2:16notebook was under seal by the court
- 2:18shouldn't you as an attorney say why is
- 2:21the court sealing this document and not
- 2:23allowing the public that relies on this
- 2:25man and and his character to not see
- 2:28this well that's a good question the
- 2:30original document was sealed it was
- 2:31obtained by Postal in inspectors as part
- 2:33of another investigation under seal John
- 2:36Dow who conducted the investigation for
- 2:38Major League Baseball which led to the
- 2:40lifetime suspension didn't have access
- 2:42but Dow has come out and said today or
- 2:44the other very recently this is it it's
- 2:46done it's a shut case this piece of
- 2:48evidence would have been the home run
- 2:50the Grand Slam that would have put Rose
- 2:52away without question okay so do you
- 2:54blame last question do you blame then
- 2:56the judge do you blame the final person
- 2:59that put this under seal and say ask the
- 3:01judge why would you put this document
- 3:03under seal if the prosecutor needed the
- 3:05slam dunk look I think people out there
- 3:08they look at the situation they look
- 3:09answer the question do you blame the
- 3:11judge no I Pete Rose has one person to
- 3:13blame in this if this is true you should
- 3:16look in the mirror and the only way this
- 3:18is ever going to be resolved is if he
- 3:20comes perfectly clean and admits the
- 3:22truth not part of the truth but the
- 3:24whole truth okay well that's not not the
- 3:26judge's fault it's not the judge's fault
- 3:28that Pete Rose misled the public okay
- 3:30well we'll see what else comes of this
- 3:32because he's he's still petitioning he
- 3:34wants to be in the Hall of Fame bad on
- 3:36his part great timing as a player not so
- 3:38much okay afterwards well we'll see he
- 3:42denies it thank you all for joining us
- 3:44Sports Court is adjourned
