  5. 0:09wanting me to get there and get trimmed
  6. 0:11up to get them as comfortable as
  7. 0:12possible so without further ado
  8. 0:16[Music]
  9. 0:24[Applause]
  10. 0:26[Music]
  11. 0:34so cakes what did daddy have on youtube
  12. 0:37today a million subscribers how good is
  13. 0:39that and it's all thanks to you guys the
  14. 0:41hair the hair has increased to a million
  15. 0:45subscribers just let that sink in one
  16. 0:47million people who are as weird about
  17. 0:49feet as me that's right thank you very
  18. 0:52much this journey has been incredible
  19. 0:55the most important thing though is
  20. 0:56getting to my friend's house right now
  21. 0:58to get these four cattle in the crash
  22. 1:00get their feet in there get them looking
  23. 1:02sexy but the most important thing for
  24. 1:04you guys right now is to hit the
  25. 1:06subscribe button couldn't say it better
  26. 1:08myself geeks
  27. 1:14[Applause]
  28. 1:17the cattle that we're on our way to
  29. 1:18treat live a very natural lifestyle and
  30. 1:21the problems they have the type that you
  31. 1:23would find in wild cattle the only
  32. 1:25difference is we are here to fix them
  33. 1:27just like that we're here
  34. 1:29to one of the best kept beef farms that
  35. 1:31i go to
  36. 1:32[Music]
  37. 1:40if it doesn't come out just leave it so
  38. 1:41the man you see before your eyes is a
  39. 1:43lifelong friend of mine he is a dear
  40. 1:46friend and he has an absolutely
  41. 1:47fantastic farmer he's called me out to
  42. 1:50look at four of his cattle but one in
  43. 1:52particular is needing a lot of attention
  44. 1:56it's a young bull calve well actually
  45. 1:58he's probably just about a year old so
  46. 2:00he's a steer or a stark or whatever you
  47. 2:03would like to call him depending on what
  48. 2:05part of the world you're from
  49. 2:06i've brought keira along for the day
  50. 2:08because craig is not here and anyway
  51. 2:10craig can't drive whereas kia can and he
  52. 2:13can help move the pickup
  53. 2:16here
  54. 2:17will you
  55. 2:25[Music]
  56. 2:28yes
  57. 2:29okay
  58. 2:31so we've got five maybe six to do
  59. 2:34they're big bad beasts they're not
  60. 2:36really they're nice it's just not
  61. 2:37working that much these cows live
  62. 2:39outside for most of the year so they're
  63. 2:40in really good condition but because we
  64. 2:42have a wet climate in scotland their
  65. 2:44feet need trim from time to time because
  66. 2:46they don't shed off as naturally as they
  67. 2:48would in a dry climate
  68. 2:51she seems keen
  69. 2:52james knows these cattle better than i
  70. 2:54do so i try not to get in the way
  71. 3:00as i said a few moments ago these cattle
  72. 3:03lead a very natural lifestyle they live
  73. 3:06on green green pastures and during the
  74. 3:08winter time when it's too cold for them
  75. 3:10they come inside to these lovely sheds
  76. 3:13these sheds are really well kept and
  77. 3:14they're only inside for a couple of
  78. 3:16months the rest of the year they get the
  79. 3:18sun in their back and their beautiful
  80. 3:20scottish air in their lungs so usually
  81. 3:23they have fantastic feet and they only
  82. 3:26need a small amount of work to make sure
  83. 3:28that they stay in tip-top condition
  84. 3:31however things do happen from time to
  85. 3:33time just like humans cows have
  86. 3:35accidents and these accidents need to be
  87. 3:38addressed that's where i come in the
  88. 3:40role of hoof trimmers is to make sure
  89. 3:43that we keep cow's feet in tip-top
  90. 3:45condition and make sure that they're as
  91. 3:47comfortable as possible
  92. 3:49take this food for instance it just
  93. 3:51needs a small rebalance and to make sure
  94. 3:54that slight little indentation there
  95. 3:56comes to no great problem
  96. 3:59as it is all she needs is the weight
  97. 4:01taken off that area and a small amount
  98. 4:03of iodine to dry up the thin horn
  99. 4:06covering that area and she'll be good to
  100. 4:08go however as you're just about to see
  101. 4:11that is not always the extent of the
  102. 4:14problems that these cows can have
  103. 4:19[Music]
  104. 4:28you'll notice that i don't polish this
  105. 4:30cow's fruit
  106. 4:31when i say polish i mean i don't go into
  107. 4:33the absolute finite details that we do
  108. 4:35with dairy cattle and that's because
  109. 4:37they're living outside and these little
  110. 4:39tiny margins will not make much
  111. 4:42difference to her whatsoever it's more
  112. 4:44important just to give her those little
  113. 4:46tweaks to make sure that she stays as
  114. 4:48comfortable as possible for as long as
  115. 4:50we possibly can
  116. 4:51[Music]
  117. 4:54the farmer tells me the front left foot
  118. 4:56on this car is showing signs of lameness
  119. 4:58now the strange thing is cows because
  120. 5:01they're herding animals actually hide
  121. 5:03lameness they do everything they can to
  122. 5:05mask it because lameness is a sign of
  123. 5:07weakness and we all know what happens to
  124. 5:10the weak members of the herd in the wild
  125. 5:12they become prey
  126. 5:14so this cow is invested in making sure
  127. 5:17that she masks the lameness as much as
  128. 5:20she possibly can
  129. 5:21however things have gotten top of her
  130. 5:23and it's gone too far so here we are
  131. 5:26whether in the crash about to make her a
  132. 5:29whole lot more comfortable
  133. 5:32[Music]
  134. 5:46so
  135. 5:48[Music]
  136. 6:01as we can all see this cow's feet are
  137. 6:03not particularly overgrown this isn't
  138. 6:06something that could have been picked up
  139. 6:08on months ago and healed more quickly
  140. 6:11it's just simply not the case our heel
  141. 6:13has been eaten away by digital
  142. 6:15dermatitis which has then gone
  143. 6:17underneath the sole and started to eat
  144. 6:20away at the aquarium right now i'm
  145. 6:22pulling out that dirt so that i know how
  146. 6:24far i can go with the grinder using the
  147. 6:27grinder on couch feet like this is
  148. 6:29really really appropriate because it
  149. 6:31means you can finish the trim much more
  150. 6:33quickly and therefore get the cab out of
  151. 6:36the crush
  152. 6:37but we cannot get close enough for the
  153. 6:39grinder and we need that visceral touch
  154. 6:42of the knife
  155. 6:44so we continue to pair away until we
  156. 6:46find what's lurking beneath
  157. 6:55[Music]
  158. 7:04as i scrape back that dirt from the
  159. 7:06corium you can see digital dermatitis
  160. 7:09infecting the open lesion
  161. 7:11and now we can all see those maggots
  162. 7:14which have infected or rather infested
  163. 7:17this cow's food
  164. 7:19now some people will be watching this
  165. 7:20and just about to type that maggots can
  166. 7:22be a good thing and will eat away the
  167. 7:24rotten flesh and that is absolutely
  168. 7:27correct
  169. 7:28however there's also a process called
  170. 7:30myiosis and that is when maggots
  171. 7:32continue to eat
  172. 7:34good flesh
  173. 7:36and after all
  174. 7:37if you had maggots in your foot would
  175. 7:39you like me to remove them or just leave
  176. 7:41them where they are
  177. 7:43i think we all know the answer to that
  178. 7:46[Music]
  179. 7:54i continued to peer away at all of the
  180. 7:57disconnected hoof horn
  181. 7:59if i left any of these cracks or this
  182. 8:02loose disconnected horn dirt would
  183. 8:04regress and get stuck underneath the
  184. 8:07flaps again making the perfect
  185. 8:09environment for maggots to infect
  186. 8:12we need to make sure we get rid of every
  187. 8:15shred of sharp or disconnected horn if
  188. 8:18we ever want this lesion to completely
  189. 8:22[Music]
  190. 8:24heal just touching the corium leads it
  191. 8:27to bleed
  192. 8:29but i finished the trim so we dress it
  193. 8:31with iodine and that will really help to
  194. 8:33clear up that digital dermatitis
  195. 8:36but probably not sufficiently enough so
  196. 8:39we add salicylic acid and a very loose
  197. 8:42wrap i don't want james to have to get
  198. 8:44this cow back in just to pull the wrap
  199. 8:46off so we aim for the wrap to fall off
  200. 8:49itself after one or two days
  201. 8:52then it's on with the back feet and this
  202. 8:54is a really good example of how a cow's
  203. 8:56feet should shed if you look around the
  204. 8:59outside edge the wall horn
  205. 9:02that part of the foot is the weight
  206. 9:04baling surface it's the structure of the
  207. 9:06foot it's where all of the integrity of
  208. 9:09the hoof capsule
  209. 9:11can be found
  210. 9:12and that is why it has not shed away if
  211. 9:15you look at the soles they're lower down
  212. 9:17or higher up depending on how you look
  213. 9:19at it and that's because it's much
  214. 9:21easier to shed away
  215. 9:23again all we do is rebalance these feet
  216. 9:25we don't go to town on them we don't go
  217. 9:28into the finite details we just
  218. 9:30rebalance them and make the cow
  219. 9:32more comfortable
  220. 9:33[Music]
  221. 9:35and this back left foot is exactly the
  222. 9:37same as the right it just needs a bit of
  223. 9:40polishing
  224. 9:45[Music]
  225. 10:01all things considered i think this
  226. 10:03limousine cow is walking particularly
  227. 10:06well considering the problems she has
  228. 10:08with that front left foot
  229. 10:11this next cow is a regular she has had
  230. 10:13laminitis and that is when the outside
  231. 10:16wall or rather the connective tissues
  232. 10:18between the outside wall and the
  233. 10:20interior of the foot stretch they are
  234. 10:23inflamed and that leads to huge
  235. 10:25overgrowth this cow is trimmed twice a
  236. 10:28year every year we keep on top of it and
  237. 10:31that helps to minimize the risk of hard
  238. 10:33lameness but as you'll see it is a
  239. 10:36fairly graphic fruit
  240. 10:38graphic in the sense of it's very
  241. 10:40overgrown but it is being managed
  242. 10:42successfully by this farmer
  243. 10:45[Music]
  244. 11:03the purple and red patches you can see
  245. 11:05on the outer claw are bruising or
  246. 11:07hemorrhaging because this outside claw
  247. 11:09is overloaded with weight it's supposed
  248. 11:12to have 50 of the weight but as you can
  249. 11:15see it's substantially bigger than that
  250. 11:17inner claw so it has been carrying far
  251. 11:20too much weight and that's what our job
  252. 11:22is
  253. 11:23we're weight management technicians
  254. 11:26we're trying to transfer a lot of the
  255. 11:28weight that that outside claw is bearing
  256. 11:30onto the inner claw and thereby stop
  257. 11:33that bruising materializing into a real
  258. 11:36lameness issue for this cave
  259. 11:48this cow's back left foot was almost
  260. 11:50identical to her back right and that's
  261. 11:52something you commonly find cow's feet
  262. 11:55mirror each other if there's something
  263. 11:57wrong with the bat right foot a lot of
  264. 11:59the time the same problem is present in
  265. 12:02the back left but to a differing degree
  266. 12:05this little angus did not have many
  267. 12:07problems whatsoever so we wept round all
  268. 12:10four of her feet before letting her get
  269. 12:12back to her friends in the pasture
  270. 12:14then we moved on to the problematic case
  271. 12:18the steer the stark the young bull the
  272. 12:20bullock whatever you want to call him
  273. 12:23this guy presented us with an altogether
  274. 12:25different problem
  275. 12:27[Music]
  276. 12:30as you can see james and i try to work
  277. 12:32as calmly as possible with these cattle
  278. 12:34they're scared of humans and they don't
  279. 12:36know we're trying to help but
  280. 12:38they still are extremely flighty and
  281. 12:41this little guy
  282. 12:42does not like being in my crush
  283. 12:49my absolute priority is the safety of
  284. 12:51the cattle in my care when i'm trimming
  285. 12:53them and as you can see this little guy
  286. 12:55is really stressed out by all of these
  287. 12:58new happenings he doesn't want to be in
  288. 13:01my crush
  289. 13:02but
  290. 13:03he needs to be for his health and his
  291. 13:05well-being so we continue to work and we
  292. 13:08tweak and move and maneuver the crush in
  293. 13:10various ways to try to keep him as calm
  294. 13:12as possible i trimmed the back left foot
  295. 13:15really quickly so that i could move on
  296. 13:17with this back right foot and as you can
  297. 13:20see he has real problems
  298. 13:22firstly i level up and balance that
  299. 13:25inner claw before moving on to this
  300. 13:27seriously out of shape outer claw
  301. 13:29believe it or not this guy is not lame
  302. 13:32on this fruit at all it does not look
  303. 13:34good and he is probably pretty
  304. 13:36uncomfortable but he is not in pain but
  305. 13:39it's still my job to promote his levels
  306. 13:42of comfort and make sure going forward
  307. 13:44nothing untoward happens
  308. 13:47[Music]
  309. 14:06so
  310. 14:18just like me this foot is definitely not
  311. 14:21going to win any beauty contests anytime
  312. 14:24soon
  313. 14:25it is however going to be much more
  314. 14:27comfortable for him we're not going to
  315. 14:29take it too far because this is not a
  316. 14:31problem we can fix through trimming the
  317. 14:33bone structure within the claw has
  318. 14:35deviated there is a serious issue here
  319. 14:38but as you can see he is perfectly
  320. 14:40mobile and able to run away from us with
  321. 14:44absolute glee that bill couldn't even
  322. 14:47walk before he went in the crash
  323. 14:49and with that we just have this one old
  324. 14:51belgian blue left and she just needs a
  325. 14:53bit of a tidy up so we crack on with
  326. 14:56that job so that we can get tidied up
  327. 14:59have a bit of a gossip and get home to
  328. 15:02my beautiful wife and little boy
  329. 15:04guys this has been the hoof gp thank you
  330. 15:07very very much for all of the love
  331. 15:09support wishes and comments that you
  332. 15:11guys give us
  333. 15:12catch you on the next one
  334. 15:14[Music]
