3. 0:03and his secret in the end. David Bowie
4. 0:06had been quietly battling cancer. His
5. 0:08final album released just days ago and
6. 0:11the message he left behind. ABC's David
7. 0:13Wright tonight on Bowie's battle these
8. 0:15last 18 months.
9. 0:19Having styled himself like a pop star
10. 0:22from another planet, today David Bowie
11. 0:24went back to the mothership.
12. 0:27Diagnosed with cancer 18 months ago, he
13. 0:30kept it private.
14. 0:31Today in LA, New York, and London, fans
15. 0:35are in shock, paying tribute and
16. 0:37grieving.
17. 0:38I just loved his music. I loved him.
18. 0:41He was born David Jones and took the
19. 0:44stage name Bowie because the Davy Jones
20. 0:46of the Monkees got there first. His
21. 0:48first big hit, Space Oddity,
22. 0:55inspired by the Apollo space program.
23. 0:59Influenced by Andy Warhol, Bowie came up
24. 1:01with the concept for Ziggy Stardust, a
25. 1:04rock band from outer space. That
26. 1:06otherworldly androgynous look,
27. 1:08positioning him as the outsider.
28. 1:13I I felt really comfortable going on
29. 1:15stage as somebody else and it seemed a
30. 1:17rational decision to keep on doing that.
31. 1:26Like his anthem Changes, Bowie was
32. 1:28famously hard to pin down. His image and
33. 1:31his music constantly changing. That
34. 1:34chameleon persona in turn inspired
35. 1:36generations of performers, from Kiss to
36. 1:39Kanye to Lady Gaga. Today Madonna
37. 1:42posted, "David Bowie changed the course
38. 1:44of my life forever."
39. 1:47Bowie co-wrote Fame with John Lennon
40. 1:50and Under Pressure with Freddie Mercury
41. 1:53of Queen.
42. 1:55Today Mick Jagger tweeted this picture
43. 1:57calling Bowie an inspiration and a true
44. 2:00original.
45. 2:02His final album, number 26, released
46. 2:05just last week. The songs and videos
47. 2:08recorded while Bowie was fighting his
48. 2:10mysterious illness.
49. 2:15This song, Lazarus, in retrospect sounds
50. 2:18like goodbye. The song now rising up the
51. 2:21charts after Bowie is gone. David
