  2. 0:06the longest psalm in the bible is psalm
  3. 0:09119
  4. 0:10it has been called the psalm of the
  5. 0:12scriptures because it concentrates on
  6. 0:15one thing
  7. 0:16the amazing sufficiency of god's word
  8. 0:19for our lives
  9. 0:20open to psalm 119 today and open your
  10. 0:23heart to the lord as we join scott pauly
  11. 0:26in this study it is our prayer that
  12. 0:28through god's truth you will find all
  13. 0:31you need
  14. 0:38do you have a good memory
  15. 0:40we're all different all of us
  16. 0:42are made up differently
  17. 0:44i wonder do you have a good short-term
  18. 0:46memory or perhaps you say no my
  19. 0:48short-term memory is not the best but
  20. 0:50how about my long-term memory
  21. 0:53i wonder is your memory being exercised
  22. 0:55is it being used
  23. 0:57i'm speaking today on the subject of
  24. 0:59memory but not just remembering names
  25. 1:02and faces and people and places and all
  26. 1:04of that i'm speaking today really about
  27. 1:06spiritual memory so memory is a muscle
  28. 1:09you've got to use it
  29. 1:10and i think one of the great principles
  30. 1:12of scripture is that god wants us to
  31. 1:15exercise our spiritual memory
  32. 1:18you see god remembers what we often
  33. 1:21forget and that is that we are very
  34. 1:24forgetful people why do you think god
  35. 1:27gave us this book the bible
  36. 1:30to remember
  37. 1:31why do you think he sent the holy spirit
  38. 1:33to bring all things to your remembrance
  39. 1:35why do you think jesus left the
  40. 1:37ordinances of baptism and the lord's
  41. 1:39supper this due in remembrance
  42. 1:43of me
  43. 1:44and so if you're going to keep moving
  44. 1:47forward you're going to have to learn to
  45. 1:49remember
  46. 1:50in our study we've come now to psalm 119
  47. 1:53and the section that begins with verse
  48. 1:5449 and guess what the first word of the
  49. 1:57section is
  50. 1:59remember
  51. 2:00remember the word unto thy servant upon
  52. 2:03which thou has caused me to hope
  53. 2:05this is my comfort in my affliction for
  54. 2:08thy word hath quickened me
  55. 2:10the proud have had me greatly in
  56. 2:12derision yet have i not declined from
  57. 2:14thy law
  58. 2:15then in verse 52 i remembered thy
  59. 2:18judgments of old oh lord and have
  60. 2:20comforted myself
  61. 2:22horror hath taken hold upon me because
  62. 2:24of the wicked that forsake thy law
  63. 2:26thy statutes have been my songs in the
  64. 2:28house of my pilgrimage
  65. 2:30and again a third time in verse 55 i
  66. 2:33have
  67. 2:35remembered thy name o lord in the night
  68. 2:38and have kept by law
  69. 2:40this i had because i kept thy precepts
  70. 2:44would you mark them in your bible and
  71. 2:46and mark them in your memory
  72. 2:48verse 49 remember
  73. 2:50verse 52 i remembered and verse 55 i
  74. 2:55have
  75. 2:56remembered there is this repeated
  76. 2:58emphasis on remembering in scripture by
  77. 3:00the way even the repetition itself is a
  78. 3:02memory device
  79. 3:04a famous teacher used to say
  80. 3:06never repeat
  81. 3:08i say never repeat
  82. 3:10for emphasis well he got his point
  83. 3:12across the idea is that repetition
  84. 3:16is for emphasis repetition is for memory
  85. 3:20someone has even said that repetition is
  86. 3:22the mother of all learning and god is
  87. 3:23not afraid to repeat himself
  88. 3:25so three times in this one section of
  89. 3:28psalm 119 verse 49 to 56
  90. 3:31he mentions memory now the first one
  91. 3:34the psalmist is praying and he cries out
  92. 3:36to god asking god to remember
  93. 3:38remember your promised lord remember
  94. 3:40your word lord to your servant
  95. 3:43might i just remind you that you don't
  96. 3:45have to help god remember god has a
  97. 3:47perfect memory the only thing god
  98. 3:49forgets
  99. 3:50is what he chooses to forget and praise
  100. 3:52god that's our sin
  101. 3:53he cast them in the sea of his
  102. 3:55forgetfulness are you glad for that
  103. 3:56today
  104. 3:58god has
  105. 3:59a selective memory he chooses to forget
  106. 4:02some things and never bring them up
  107. 4:03again but you don't have to remind him
  108. 4:05to keep his covenant keep his word he's
  109. 4:07never going to forget
  110. 4:09he's never forgotten you a single day
  111. 4:10and he's not about to start today so
  112. 4:12really what the psalmist is doing here
  113. 4:14in his prayer in his cry is he's
  114. 4:16reminding himself of that when he says
  115. 4:18remember the word of thy servant he's
  116. 4:20just saying lord i'm claiming your
  117. 4:22promise
  118. 4:23i'm hearkening back to that that eternal
  119. 4:26promise
  120. 4:27that timeless truth
  121. 4:30it is the psalmist who needs to be
  122. 4:32reminded
  123. 4:33then he says in verse 52 i remembered
  124. 4:36thy judgments of old oh lord and have
  125. 4:39comforted myself
  126. 4:41go back intentionally think on
  127. 4:44god's promises and god's principles it
  128. 4:46brings great comfort
  129. 4:48it pushes the spiritual reset button in
  130. 4:51your heart
  131. 4:52this principle of spiritual memory is
  132. 4:54found all through scripture for example
  133. 4:55in the new testament paul wrote to
  134. 4:56timothy
  135. 4:58and challenged him to stir up the gift
  136. 5:00of god which was in him
  137. 5:02how did he do it read the context of the
  138. 5:03passage he takes him back to when hands
  139. 5:06were laid upon him he takes him back to
  140. 5:08first principles and the first calling
  141. 5:11he uses memory to bring that fresh
  142. 5:13stirring
  143. 5:14a peter writes to believers that had
  144. 5:16been scattered abroad through
  145. 5:17persecution
  146. 5:18they were in unfamiliar territory living
  147. 5:21in unfamiliar times sound familiar and
  148. 5:23guess what he says to them
  149. 5:25stir yourself up by way of remembrance
  150. 5:29memory is one of the things that stirs
  151. 5:32the heart stirs the mind don't wait on
  152. 5:36somebody else to stir you don't wait on
  153. 5:38circumstances to get better to be
  154. 5:39stirred
  155. 5:40instead go back in your mind go back to
  156. 5:42the day you got saved
  157. 5:44go back to the to the early truths god
  158. 5:46taught you go back to the answers to
  159. 5:48prayer go back and rehearse the
  160. 5:50faithfulness and the goodness and mercy
  161. 5:52of god to you
  162. 5:53think on these things today purposefully
  163. 5:56and god will use that memory to stir
  164. 5:59something deep in your heart
  165. 6:01and then finally in verse 55
  166. 6:03he says i have remembered thy name o
  167. 6:05lord now remember there is this constant
  168. 6:08connection between god's word and his
  169. 6:10name in scripture because
  170. 6:12look we say a man is only as good as his
  171. 6:14word
  172. 6:16may i say to you god's word is his name
  173. 6:19when god gives his word on something
  174. 6:20he's signing his name on the line he's
  175. 6:23putting his name on the line
  176. 6:25he is saying i've given you my
  177. 6:27my promise
  178. 6:28my character backs this up
  179. 6:31we need to think much on the good
  180. 6:33character of god the attributes of the
  181. 6:35lord
  182. 6:36rehearse the names of god today use his
  183. 6:39name not lightly god forbid not
  184. 6:41flippantly
  185. 6:43not in vain but rather with meaning with
  186. 6:46purpose
  187. 6:47use it to remember
  188. 6:50all that god has done in your life the
  189. 6:52specific time the psalmist references
  190. 6:54here he says i've remembered thy name o
  191. 6:56lord in the night
  192. 6:58and have kept thy law we'll come back to
  193. 7:00this emphasis on the nighttime hours in
  194. 7:02psalm 119 but i love this
  195. 7:05when nobody's around you can remember
  196. 7:07god in the dark seasons
  197. 7:09when the lights go out
  198. 7:11when you're living in the shadows when
  199. 7:13nobody sees and nobody else can hear you
  200. 7:16remember this god is with you
  201. 7:19god has not failed you forsaken you or
  202. 7:22failed you
  203. 7:23god has has not left you alone he
  204. 7:27promised he's with you he would never
  205. 7:29leave you nor forsake you he's with you
  206. 7:31to the end of the world amen to that
  207. 7:33friend remember these things today
  208. 7:37how easily we remember our hardships
  209. 7:41and how quickly we forget his help
  210. 7:44spurgeon said by some strange perversity
  211. 7:47man tends to forget what he should
  212. 7:49remember and remember what he should
  213. 7:51forget
  214. 7:52we'll come back to this section in our
  215. 7:54next

  217. 7:56and we'll look at it yet again if you'll
  218. 7:58read it psalm 119 verse 49 to 56 you'll
  219. 8:01notice that it's full of problems full
