  2. 0:03recently the head of the black lives
  3. 0:06matter chapter in new york his name is
  4. 0:07hawk newsom made an assertion he said
  5. 0:11poverty causes crime
  6. 0:14and the problem is is that crime
  7. 0:17is caused by poverty
  8. 0:20what
  9. 0:21you can't be serious man you cannot be
  10. 0:24serious
  11. 0:25in my first book the 10 things you can't
  12. 0:27say in america i talked about crime you
  13. 0:30know in 1960s
  14. 0:32the area of california had the greatest
  15. 0:34amount of crime
  16. 0:35was an area that had
  17. 0:38the lowest income
  18. 0:40the highest unemployment rate
  19. 0:42the highest proportion of families with
  20. 0:43incomes under 4 000 a year the least
  21. 0:47educational attainment the highest
  22. 0:50tuberculosis rate and the highest
  23. 0:52proportion of substandard housing you
  24. 0:54know what area that was in california it
  25. 0:57was right outside san francisco called
  26. 0:59chinatown yet in the entire penal system
  27. 1:02of the whole state of california there
  28. 1:04were five people of chinese ancestry
  29. 1:08behind bars i repeat five people of
  30. 1:12chinese ancestry behind bars if poverty
  31. 1:15causes crime it should have been full
  32. 1:18of chinese americans
  33. 1:19and there are many more problems with mr
  34. 1:21newsome's assertion
  35. 1:23take the 30s during the great depression
  36. 1:26or the 40s or the 50s
  37. 1:28when black poverty was high and
  38. 1:30discrimination against blacks was high
  39. 1:33in 1940 87 percent of blacks live below
  40. 1:37the federally defined level of poverty
  41. 1:39yet in the 1930s black homicide went
  42. 1:42down the 1940s black homicide went down
  43. 1:461950s black homicide went down you know
  44. 1:49when it increased about 89 percent
  45. 1:52the 1960s when lyndon johnson with the
  46. 1:55best of intentions launched what he
  47. 1:57called the war on poverty suddenly the
  48. 2:00percentage of black kids being born into
  49. 2:02the world without a father married to
  50. 2:04the mother skyrocketed and as i've said
  51. 2:06many times before
  52. 2:08don't take elders word for it take
  53. 2:10barack obama's word for it
  54. 2:12the statistics that children who grow up
  55. 2:14with a father are five times
  56. 2:17more likely to live in poverty and
  57. 2:19commit crime
  58. 2:21they're nine times more likely to drop
  59. 2:23out of school
  60. 2:2420 times
  61. 2:26more likely to end up in prison
  62. 2:28mr newsome ought to be asking this
  63. 2:30simple question why have we gone from
  64. 2:32having 25 of blacks born outside of
  65. 2:35wedlock in 1965 when lyndon johnson
  66. 2:37launched his war to 70 today you cannot
  67. 2:41blame that on poverty
  68. 2:43here's another problem
  69. 2:44the people who can least afford the
  70. 2:48crime are the very people that people
  71. 2:50like hawk newsom purports to care about
  72. 2:53this is an article from the late great
  73. 2:55economist walter williams it's called
  74. 2:58unappreciated crime costs crime imposes
  75. 3:02a hefty tax on the people who can least
  76. 3:05afford it he's referring to the
  77. 3:07law-abiding residents of black
  78. 3:08neighborhoods because a lot of
  79. 3:11businesses don't go into the inner city
  80. 3:13because of crime because of theft
  81. 3:15residents bear the time and the cost of
  82. 3:17going outside their community do the
  83. 3:19shopping quote the true villains are the
  84. 3:22criminals who make some businesses
  85. 3:24unprofitable by the way he writes these
  86. 3:26are equal opportunity criminals
  87. 3:29they will victimize a black-owned
  88. 3:30business just said they would victimize
  89. 3:32a white-owned business remember some of
  90. 3:35the riots during the summers the
  91. 3:37mostly peaceful riots victimizing black
  92. 3:40businesses owner adrian alvarez and her
  93. 3:42husband compelled to come to their
  94. 3:44orange theory fitness franchise in the
  95. 3:45early hours of sunday morning we weren't
  96. 3:47necessarily trying to defend the
  97. 3:49business but we wanted to go clean up we
  98. 3:51wanted to
  99. 3:53let people know we were in support when
  100. 3:55i got the phone call to come over here
  101. 3:58that was shoe mountain's owner karif
  102. 4:00johnston's reaction to this they broke
  103. 4:02down like i said our gate that we had
  104. 4:04this front door glass was smashed was
  105. 4:06glass all over this floor it was just
  106. 4:08something hard to bear
  107. 4:10[Music]
  108. 4:14the next morning was when i came in
  109. 4:17and that's when i saw the damage
  110. 4:19i just energetically felt
  111. 4:22that hurt
  112. 4:23the riding and looting in late may took
  113. 4:25another major hit and their store in
  114. 4:27michigan was one of the many vandalized
  115. 4:30it's just been like a dominant effect
  116. 4:32one thing at the next after the next
  117. 4:34ronald reagan saw it 40 years ago
  118. 4:37massive inflation that we haven't seen
  119. 4:39since
  120. 4:40today
  121. 4:41in his own words inflation is as violent
  122. 4:44as a mugger as frightening as an armed
  123. 4:46robber and as deadly as a hitman and
  124. 4:48right now your retirement accounts are
  125. 4:51under attack thanks to the inflationary
