- 0:22days her boyfriend Charlie Carver had
- 0:26been shot dead
- 0:28in the corner came up and said that they
- 0:30had positive ID that it was Charlie
- 0:35that was a hard time
- 0:37you just don't want to hear those words
- 0:39how can a man just walk out not knowing
- 0:42who this person was anything about this
- 0:45person and just in his life right there
- 0:47the killer was a popular real estate
- 0:49agent named Todd kohlhepp police would
- 0:53soon discover two more bodies on the
- 0:56grounds of his property
- 0:58but the 45 year old had even more
- 1:01skeletons in his closet the murder of
- 1:03four employees at a motorcycle
- 1:05dealership 13 years earlier
- 1:09Todd describes that before he leaves the
- 1:11scene he goes back to each victim and
- 1:14shoots him in the head before he leaves

- 1:19seven people the Twisted serial killer
- 1:22had been hiding in plain sight for over
- 1:25a decade
- 1:26getting away with those murders signal
- 1:30signal that there are no consequences

- 2:06when 45 year old real estate agent Todd
- 2:10kohlhepp was arrested for the murder of
- 2:13three people and the kidnap of another
- 2:15on his property in Woodruff South
- 2:18Carolina in November
- 2:202016. investigators had no idea he was
- 2:25also responsible for an unsolved
- 2:27shooting spree which killed four others
- 2:3013 years earlier
- 2:33journalist Daniel gross knows kohlhepp's
- 2:36story better than most
- 2:39when I hear the name Todd kohlhab I
- 2:41picture
- 2:42him sitting in that interrogation room
- 2:45when he was initially arrested and in
- 2:49his mind he had those investigators
- 2:51wrapped around his finger he was
- 2:53confessing to a murder that they were
- 2:55not able to solve for 13 years and so um
- 2:58just when I see his name or see his face
- 3:01I always just think about his ego and
- 3:04personality behind
- 3:06the man that that's murdered all these
- 3:08people
- 3:09so you pulled out the Beretta and what
- 3:11happened
- 3:13um shot the mechanic twice
- 3:16they had heard the gunshots in the back
- 3:18and we're coming this way to figure out
- 3:19what had happened
- 3:20I had three people in front of me I
- 3:22dropped the news
- 3:24Daniel continues to discover more about
- 3:28the deranged serial killer coldhap
- 3:31regularly pens letters to him from his
- 3:34cell
- 3:35I mean as a journalist this is one of
- 3:37those cases that you only really dream
- 3:39up you know it's sort of Larger than
- 3:41Life almost like a you're just reading a
- 3:45horror book or something
- 3:48even today you know he's in prison for
- 3:50the rest of his life he's convicted of
- 3:52murdering seven people I almost feel
- 3:54like we're still just scratching the
- 3:55surface
- 3:56this killer Story begins in the Sunshine
- 3:59State of Florida
- 4:02Todd samsel was born in Fort Lauderdale
- 4:05on the 7th of March 1971 but his parents
- 4:10split up when he was just two Todd
- 4:13adopted his stepfather's surname coleheb
- 4:15when his mother remarried but his
- 4:18formative years were far from happy
- 4:22when we look back at Cole hep's
- 4:24childhood we are almost ticking off all
- 4:26of the warning sign behaviors for serial
- 4:28homicide we've got somebody who has real
- 4:31difficulty forming relationships with
- 4:33his peers so he doesn't see children his
- 4:37own age as potential allies potential
- 4:39friends he sees them as competitors he
- 4:42can only communicate and interact with
- 4:44them aggressively he basically wants to
- 4:47crush everybody else and to come out
- 4:49Victorious we also have a history of
- 4:52animal cruelty we know that he bleached
- 4:54a goldfish we know that he shot a dog
- 4:56with an air gun here is somebody who
- 4:59enjoys causing harm to other people and
- 5:01other living creatures it's something
- 5:03that makes him feel powerful and that
- 5:05sadism is a thread that will run
- 5:07throughout the rest of his life the
- 5:10family relocated to South Carolina but
- 5:13Cole hep's mother divorced again in 1982
- 5:16the couple would go on to remarry each
- 5:19other several times throughout Todd's
- 5:21life
- 5:23twelve-year-old Todd was causing so much
- 5:27disruption at home that a decision was
- 5:29made to move him 2 000 miles across the
- 5:33country
- 5:34eventually he was fed up with living
- 5:35here and convinced his mother to let him
- 5:39go live with his birth father who he
- 5:41really hadn't seen at all in Arizona
- 5:44and I think that might have been a way
- 5:45for him to try to see life in a new
- 5:48light and maybe get a fresh start change
- 5:50a scene change a venue
- 5:52but there was to be no improvement in
- 5:55Todd's behavior in fact in November 1986
- 5:59the troubled teenager would soon turn to
- 6:03violent crime
- 6:05he was 15 years old and the reports say
- 6:08that he had gone outside and found a
- 6:11neighbor who was a 14 year old girl
- 6:14he ended up kidnapping her and taking
- 6:16him back to his father's house
- 6:18and and that's where he he duct taped
- 6:20her mouth he held a pistol to her head
- 6:22and sexually assaulted her
- 6:25it was a horrific and unprovoked attack
- 6:30he threatens to kill her he says if you
- 6:32tell anyone about this I'll kill your
- 6:34family I'll kill your siblings I'll kill
- 6:36you I mean scared her to death
- 6:38it's chilling genuinely chilling the
- 6:41he's so convinced of his own importance
- 6:45so convinced of his own superiority that
- 6:48he can get away with anything he really
- 6:50does think that the girl won't tell
- 6:51anyone
- 6:52but the girl's family were already
- 6:55concerned for the missing Teenager her
- 6:58young brother had recently been taught
- 7:00what to do if you need help in an
- 7:02emergency and he had raised the alarm
- 7:06the right victim had a five-year-old
- 7:08brother and he was concerned that he
- 7:10couldn't find her so he called the
- 7:12police and as he was on the phone to the
- 7:15police his sister comes in through the
- 7:17door and then talks to the officers and
- 7:19tells them what had happened but for me
- 7:22the interesting thing is is Carl hep's
- 7:24reaction when he was arrested because
- 7:26his overriding concern was how much
- 7:29trouble am I in how much prison time am
- 7:31I likely to serve absolutely no concern
- 7:34for his victim whatsoever it's all me
- 7:36myself and I
- 7:39in October 1987 age just 16. Todd
- 7:44colehemp was sent to prison for 15 years
- 7:48you know a lot of people say that's your
- 7:50time for rehabilitation
- 7:52um I think frittata was the opposite I
- 7:53think he he sat there and continued to
- 7:56Harbor all of this inner struggle
- 7:59after serving his sentence kohlhepp was
- 8:02released on November the 24th 2001. he'd
- 8:06spent almost half his life in prison
- 8:09so now he's 30 years old
- 8:11and newly out of prison so of course
- 8:14he's going to move back to South
- 8:16Carolina to be with his mom when cohab
- 8:19is released he starts an image
- 8:22management campaign essentially during
- 8:24his time in prison he's performed this
- 8:26role as a model inmate now he's been
- 8:28released he needs to basically do some
- 8:31damage limitation in terms of
- 8:33establishing a new life for himself
- 8:35five years after his release in 2006
- 8:39Cole have applied for a real estate
- 8:41license in South Carolina despite being
- 8:44on the sex offenders register the 35
- 8:47year old managed to talk his way around
- 8:49it
- 8:51they raised that issue with him and said
- 8:52well we know you're applying for this
- 8:54license but there's this on your record
- 8:56and he submitted a letter essentially
- 8:58just downplaying the entire conviction
- 9:03and he basically explains this offense
- 9:05as a misunderstanding between him and a
- 9:08girlfriend so he's basically saying well
- 9:11this was this was hurtful this wasn't
- 9:13really me
- 9:15in June 2006 Cole hip was granted his
- 9:19real estate agent's license he opened
- 9:22his own business and on the outside was
- 9:25living the life of a well-respected
- 9:27model citizen albeit with an unhealthy
- 9:31fascination
- 9:32for guns kohap was an avid collector of
- 9:36firearms and I think this is something
- 9:38that he inherited in a way from his
- 9:40father who also had quite a considerable
- 9:43collection but I think for me it's about
- 9:45what Firearms represents they represent
- 9:47power they represent Authority and I
- 9:50think if you look at them in the context
- 9:52of Cole hepb's other hobbies and
- 9:54interests they are quite grandiose they
- 9:56are quite alpha male so he had a pilot's
- 9:59license he was into motorbikes he liked
- 10:03fast cars so all of this paints a
- 10:05picture of the the kind of American
- 10:07Dream you know the the Macho American
- 10:09character
- 10:11but This Charming Man about town was
- 10:14hiding a huge secret in November 2003
- 10:18less than three years before becoming a
- 10:21successful real estate agent Todd Cole
- 10:24happened gunned down four people in Cold
- 10:26Blood
- 10:28on the 6th of November coldhep walked
- 10:31into a local motorcycle dealership
- 10:33called Superbike Motorsports
- 10:36Scott Ponder opened it and he had a
- 10:39passion for motorcycles loved to ride
- 10:41you know so they built this whole
- 10:42business around this motorcycle shop and
- 10:45people knew about them you know it was
- 10:47it was a thriving business and it was a
- 10:48family business
- 10:5030 year old Scott employed a small
- 10:53number of people including his 52 year
- 10:55old mother Beverly guy
- 10:58Scott's wife had moved to South Carolina
- 11:00from Arizona to be with her husband they
- 11:04were married in January 2002. from a
- 11:09young age
- 11:10and teen years he was
- 11:12human motorcycles and
- 11:14I think early on in his years he always
- 11:17planned on having his own motorcycle
- 11:19dealership like he knew that that that
- 11:21would happen
- 11:22he was
- 11:24just a gentle person he had the ability
- 11:27to make you feel really comfortable
- 11:30I think which is why he was so
- 11:31successful in his business is because
- 11:33people that came in were immediately put
- 11:36at ease with just his demeanor
- 11:39in November 2003 Melissa had recently
- 11:43found out that she was pregnant with the
- 11:46couple's first child
- 11:48so Scott was not going to actually go to
- 11:50that first appointment with me he was
- 11:52busy and at the last minute he just
- 11:55decided you know what I'm gonna go hear
- 11:57the heartbeat I've never heard this
- 11:58before and this is new and exciting and
- 12:01so he surprised me by showing up at the
- 12:04hospital
- 12:05I'm going to Forever remember that day
- 12:08because
- 12:10he wasn't supposed to be there and he
- 12:12was and we walked in and we were able to
- 12:14experience that together and it was
- 12:17pretty exciting you know for them to
- 12:19find this Beating Heart and us to you
- 12:22know get excited over the fact that yay
- 12:24we're gonna we're gonna have a family
- 12:26and
- 12:27that was a good day for us I never would
- 12:29have imagined that two days later it
- 12:32would all change
- 12:35on the day of the attack at Superbike
- 12:37Motorsports nothing seemed out of the
- 12:41ordinary
- 12:42so November 6th of 2003 he went on to
- 12:47work
- 12:48and I got ready for work and my last
- 12:53memory in my mind in the picture I have
- 12:55in my mind as I passed the motorcycle
- 12:57dealership that morning and honked at
- 13:00him and he was standing at the side of
- 13:02the dealership and he waved and blew a
- 13:04kiss and that's honestly the last time I
- 13:06ever saw him alive
- 13:08at around 3 P.M Melissa received a call
- 13:12from a concerned colleague who'd heard
- 13:14news of a shooting at the bike shop she
- 13:17immediately raced across town
- 13:19I got to the location that all of the
- 13:23law enforcement was at and there was a
- 13:25good 10 or 12 law enforcement vehicles
- 13:28with their lights on had the road
- 13:29blocked off and I just ran past all of
- 13:33them and said that's my husband's
- 13:34business down there and I just started
- 13:36running
- 13:37before she could get near Melissa was
- 13:40escorted home by police officers
- 13:42together they sat and waited for news
- 13:45from the crime scene
- 13:47I was standing at my front glass door
- 13:50just looking out front and I see
- 13:53Spartanburg County coroner drive up my
- 13:56driveway
- 13:58so two people walked in
- 14:00told me to have a seat the woman
- 14:02immediately started talking and she
- 14:04identified herself as one of the
- 14:06coroners and she just said we had an
- 14:08unfortunate event happen at your
- 14:10husband's business today
- 14:13Scott was shot and killed
- 14:16the bottom fell out of Melissa's world
- 14:21and I immediately started crying and
- 14:24said I don't I don't know what I'm gonna
- 14:26do
- 14:27I'm pregnant I can't run this business
- 14:29by myself I'm
- 14:31you know just sorrow
- 14:34I started to think you know his mom I've
- 14:37got to call his mom where's his mom I
- 14:38need to talk to her where is she where's
- 14:40where's Beverly and
- 14:43that is when they told me that his mom
- 14:46had been shot and killed as well and
- 14:48that Brian Lucas had been shot and
- 14:50killed and they hadn't identified the
- 14:52fourth victim yet because he didn't have
- 14:54any identification on him
- 14:55the full victim was 26 year old mechanic
- 14:59Chris sherbutz Chris Brian Lucas Beverly
- 15:03guy and her son Scott Ponder had all
- 15:07been murdered in Cold Blood
- 15:09the identity of the gunman was a mystery
- 15:15seven months later in June 2004 Melissa
- 15:19gave birth to a 10 pound baby boy and
- 15:22named him Scott Jr
- 15:26he changed everything for me
- 15:29I um
- 15:30the first moment I laid eyes on him I
- 15:33thought this is why I'm still here
- 15:35because honestly I wanted to have been
- 15:37down there at the dealership that day
- 15:38and just taken with him it was so hard
- 15:42but yeah as soon as they put that little
- 15:43boy in in my arms I I knew that that was
- 15:46my sole purpose why I was still here
- 15:49Scots never knew his father and over 15
- 15:53years later his mum must never let the
- 15:56memories fade
- 15:58told me a lot about him and how uh
- 16:02he liked to uh mess with my grandma a
- 16:05lot back when he was younger and he
- 16:07thought it was funny
- 16:08and she liked to tell a lot of stories
- 16:10about him and uh it helped me like just
- 16:14picture
- 16:15what I mean who he really was
- 16:18during his birthdays usually I'm in
- 16:19school so she takes me out of school and
- 16:22we go to lunch we just kind of celebrate
- 16:24his life I guess and not not feel down
- 16:27about it just have a day where we
- 16:29celebrate him and just him you know
- 16:32the investigation into the quadruple
- 16:35murder at Superbike Motorsports unearth
- 16:39no obvious suspects nothing had been
- 16:42stolen and there were no witnesses to
- 16:44the crime
- 16:45but suddenly in late 2004 the police had
- 16:50an unlikely suspect on their radar
- 16:54it wasn't until my son was about six
- 16:56months old
- 16:57that
- 16:59I got called into the sheriff's
- 17:01department and they said we have
- 17:03something we need to talk to you about
- 17:04it's really serious
- 17:06and my first inclination was they know
- 17:08who did this and they want to talk to me
- 17:11about it so they sat me down in a room
- 17:13an interrogation room and said we
- 17:16took DNA from a diaper you left here a
- 17:19couple of weeks ago
- 17:21and we sent it off and compared it to
- 17:23the blood from the crime scene and we
- 17:25have DNA that does not match up with
- 17:28your husband's and so we need you to
- 17:31tell us
- 17:32what's going on who's who's your baby's
- 17:36father
- 17:37you know how do you play a role in all I
- 17:40mean I was taken so far back I couldn't
- 17:44believe it
- 17:45Melissa had turned from a victim to a
- 17:49suspect
- 17:50she was so stunned by the accusations
- 17:52that she offered to have Scott's body
- 17:55exhumed so a new DNA sample could be
- 17:58taken to prove her innocence
- 18:01okay it took about a month
- 18:04when I I received a call back from them
- 18:07in essence what they told me is Scott
- 18:10and Brian's blood vials were mislabeled
- 18:14somebody put the wrong name on the DNA
- 18:19and so they were doing a DNA test of my
- 18:22son with Brian Lucas not knowing it was
- 18:25Brian Lucas's blood they just thought I
- 18:27had had an affair it had been a year of
- 18:31hell for Melissa
- 18:33it it broke my heart it broke my spirit
- 18:35I decided to move back to Arizona when
- 18:39my child was one I just figured it was
- 18:42time for me to start back over in my
- 18:45home area
- 18:47and kind of get us out of the public eye
- 18:49because everybody knew who we were here
- 18:51and I I didn't want to raise my son that
- 18:54way
- 18:55the police had zero suspects and the
- 18:59murders would go unsold for over a
- 19:01decade but the perpetrator was hiding in
- 19:05plain sight a disgruntled customer who'd
- 19:08taken his frustration out in the most
- 19:11extreme and callous way
- 19:14the killer was Todd cohab there is
- 19:17records of him being in the store and
- 19:21the shop owner and manager and some
- 19:23others have apparently making fun of him
- 19:25in a way sort of a lighthearted banter
- 19:28you know they were they were known to to
- 19:30joke around
- 19:34Todd being Todd that just fueled a fire
- 19:36in him you know whereas anybody else
- 19:38it's like okay if somebody's joking
- 19:39towards me or making fun of me even
- 19:42you know it's it is what it is you know
- 19:44they move on right
- 19:46um but Todd's not gonna take take that
- 19:48from anybody and them making fun of them
- 19:51he felt that they had to pay
- 19:53Cole have returned to the bike shop on
- 19:56the 6th of November 2003 and waited
- 20:00until no other customers were in the
- 20:02store he then drew a gun and exacted his
- 20:07revenge
- 20:09and just one by one Todd X some he
- 20:12shoots them cold blood Brian and Scott
- 20:15actually were the last to be shot and
- 20:18after they saw what was happening they
- 20:20started to run for the front door and
- 20:22Todd was able to shoot both of them
- 20:24right outside the door
- 20:26I think getting away with those Murders
- 20:29At The Bike Shop would have been really
- 20:31meaningful
- 20:32um for Cole hat because it signals to
- 20:35him that there are no consequences to
- 20:37this I can kill and I can get away with
- 20:40it
- 20:41feeling Invincible Cole Hep would spend
- 20:44the next decade honing a successful
- 20:47career as one of the top real estate
- 20:49agents in Spartanburg but in 2015 Cole
- 20:54heps Lust For Blood returned
- 20:57the 44 year old had recently acquired a
- 21:00large plot of land in Woodruff South
- 21:03Carolina the 95 acre grounds would soon
- 21:07become kohlhepp's Killing Fields
- 21:10on the 22nd of December 2015 29 year old
- 21:15Johnny coxy and his 25 year old wife
- 21:18Megan were reported missing
- 21:21Megan and Johnny were a young married
- 21:23couple in their 20s and they were quite
- 21:26vulnerable they had experienced quite a
- 21:28few issues in the past drug addiction
- 21:31they'd had that their child removed by
- 21:34by social services and they came to know
- 21:38Cole hap because he offered them work
- 21:40working on his property doing manual
- 21:44labor so I think he very much saw that
- 21:48vulnerability in them and and exploited
- 21:51that because Cole Hep is a predator and
- 21:55he is very good at spotting
- 21:57vulnerabilities in other people
- 21:59colap sees them as almost a perfect pair
- 22:03of victims
- 22:04so he makes a pretense on the 19th of
- 22:07December 2015 he says I would like you
- 22:09to come out to the Woodruff property I
- 22:12need some clearing to be done now not
- 22:14many people are going to miss them I
- 22:16mean they've been living rough they they
- 22:19haven't got lots and lots of relatives
- 22:21around
- 22:23he takes them to the property they get
- 22:25out of the car
- 22:28and he shoots Johnny
- 22:30he drops dead he then takes Megan coxy
- 22:34and puts her into a container
- 22:38and holds her captive for about a week
- 22:42in a bid to escape the clutches of
- 22:44coldhap Megan started a fire in her
- 22:47makeshift prison
- 22:49just like her husband she was executed
- 22:52in Cold Blood by the Twisted killer
- 22:57he said she was acting like a caged
- 22:59animal and so he said quite
- 23:01matter-of-factly I put a bullet in the
- 23:03back of her head so now he's got two
- 23:05bodies
- 23:07he digs Graves for them both
- 23:09and buries him on the property goes back
- 23:12to work as a real estate agent
- 23:14as if nothing whatever had happened
- 23:18the police had no leads in The
- 23:20Disappearance of Johnny and Megan coxy
- 23:22once again coal heppard got away with
- 23:25murder and eight months later he was
- 23:28ready to kill again
- 23:30on the 4th of September 2016 a family
- 23:35made a call to the police to report that
- 23:37their 32-year-old son Charles David
- 23:40Carver known as Charlie was missing he
- 23:44was just a caring person he always
- 23:45wanted to help people he'd give you the
- 23:47last two dollars
- 23:49out of his wallet and the shirt off his
- 23:52back if you needed it you know he was
- 23:54just that kind of a guy
- 23:56seemed like a happy life Charlie would
- 23:59text his father every day or every other
- 24:01day they'd talk about sports
- 24:04um so he lived a pretty normal life
- 24:06the last text I got from him before he
- 24:08went missing was about football
- 24:11and it was just a funny cartoon
- 24:14and I still have it
- 24:17alongside Charlie his new girlfriend
- 24:20Kayla Brown had also disappeared
- 24:24I ran into Charlie and Kayla at Walmart
- 24:27on a Saturday we were shopping and they
- 24:31were coming out and he introduced Kayla
- 24:34to us and that was the first time I'd
- 24:36met her and
- 24:40five days later
- 24:41they went missing
- 24:44in late August Charlie and his
- 24:47girlfriend had been contacted by a
- 24:50friend of 30 year old Kayla Todd kolhap
- 24:54Kayla had already known Todd collab they
- 24:58had met previously and they had chatted
- 25:02online on Facebook pretty often and you
- 25:05know at some point kolhap had offered
- 25:08for Kayla to work for him as well you
- 25:11know he was looking for work and he knew
- 25:13Kayla as sort of a friend at this point
- 25:16days turned into weeks and Charlie and
- 25:20Kayla failed to return home they had
- 25:23seemingly vanished off the face of the
- 25:26Earth about 30 days into it my wife and
- 25:31I taught and I said
- 25:33something's wrong I don't know what's
- 25:35what has happened but
- 25:37just had that apparent feeling that
- 25:40you know it wasn't going to be good
- 25:43and so we set our kids down and three
- 25:46youngest and said
- 25:48this may not you know
- 25:51end well you know your brother may be
- 25:54gone
- 25:56this such continued into October 2016
- 26:00but it would be in vain Charlie Carver
- 26:03had been dead since the 31st of August
- 26:08just like Johnny and Megan coxy Charlie
- 26:11and Kayla's visit to kolhaps Woodruff
- 26:14home would end in tragedy
- 26:17so they came together on the property
- 26:18and without hesitation Todd kohlhepp
- 26:22ends up shooting Charlie three times in
- 26:25the chest and he drops to the floor
- 26:27at this point Caleb Brown is just
- 26:29stunned you know this she just watched
- 26:31her boyfriend get murdered in front of
- 26:33her not sure what to do basically silent
- 26:36just standing there in fear and colab
- 26:39then goes to her
- 26:40shoves her in the shipping container and
- 26:43chains her up inside there
- 26:45just like Megan coxy Kayla Brown became
- 26:49Todd kohlhepp's prisoner
- 26:51the next two months Kayla Brown is in
- 26:54captivity she's on that property no
- 26:56one's heard from her no one knows where
- 26:58she is meanwhile kohlhepp is still
- 27:00living his normal life he's going to
- 27:02work he's working late hours he's
- 27:04talking to people like normal I think
- 27:06he's convinced himself that it's all
- 27:08worked that my fantasies come true I
- 27:10have my captive I go there every day do
- 27:13what I want with her and I resume my
- 27:15quotes ordinary life outside
- 27:18he is so obsessed with his own
- 27:21satisfaction with his own personality
- 27:23with that God complex of his that he
- 27:26doesn't believe for one second that she
- 27:29will ever leave his clutches the perfect
- 27:33fly in the spider's web she is his and
- 27:36will remain his
- 27:38but this time by utilizing cell phone
- 27:41triangulation the police were hot on the
- 27:44heels of Todd coleb then they realized
- 27:48that Kayla's phone is pinging in
- 27:51Spartanburg County so they reach out to
- 27:52Spartanburg
- 27:53and from there they learn property
- 27:55records and they can see that okay this
- 27:57prop piece of property is owned by a man
- 27:58named Todd kohlhab
- 28:00on the 3rd of November 2016 two months
- 28:04after The Disappearance of Charlie
- 28:06Carver and Kayla Brown the police were
- 28:09ready to swoop
- 28:11we've got investigators in Spartanburg
- 28:14that go to Kohl's house which is about
- 28:1620 minutes or so from the Woodruff
- 28:19property
- 28:19and meanwhile there's another team of
- 28:21investigators that go to the Woodruff
- 28:23property with a search warrant
- 28:25and they get into the property and they
- 28:27start looking they find Kayla chained up
- 28:30in the container they hear her inside
- 28:32they take a long time to kind of cut
- 28:34through all the chains and locks that
- 28:36had been on the container open it up
- 28:38find her rescue her
- 28:42wonderful video of them actually opening
- 28:45the container taken by the police at the
- 28:47time it's extraordinary
- 28:50and they they walk in and right at the
- 28:52back of the container right at the far
- 28:54end there she is
- 28:56there was no sign of Charlie
- 29:00do you know where your buddy is
- 29:05investigators radio this dramatic update
- 29:08through to their colleagues at Cole
- 29:10hepb's home
- 29:11we have Kayla
- 29:14we have Caleb
- 29:16in your property
- 29:17she was locked in a container
- 29:20okay
- 29:21she has told us
- 29:23that you shot and killed Charlie
- 29:26at this point Co-op just shuts down he
- 29:28kind of gives this Blank Stare and he
- 29:30goes I don't know what you're talking
- 29:31about
- 29:33why'd you shoot it I didn't cheat
- 29:35anybody sir
- 29:36okay why'd you lock her in a container
- 29:38in your property
- 29:41she's on your property right now locked
- 29:43in the container
- 29:44and they're pressing him on it saying
- 29:46we've got Kayla now you can either
- 29:48cooperate and tell us more tell us where
- 29:50Charlie is or we could go the hard way
- 29:54he's saying you buried Charlie's body on
- 29:55that property
- 29:59so you're saying you didn't lock her up
- 30:01you didn't put her in the comics box or
- 30:03anything
- 30:05find money to turn
- 30:07uh probably a good thing go ahead and
- 30:09put him in the back of your car
- 30:11finally Todd coldhep was safely Behind
- 30:14Bars Kayla Brown had been saved after a
- 30:17terrifying ordeal he held her in a
- 30:20storage container for 65 days and and
- 30:24subjected her to the most horrendous
- 30:26sexual violence and he raped her twice a
- 30:30day on some occasion she was simply
- 30:33there as his play thing to be used as he
- 30:36wished she reported that that Cole had
- 30:39told her that he owned her that she was
- 30:42his possession and that is very
- 30:44indicative of of somebody who is
- 30:47controlling somebody who sees women as
- 30:49objects somebody who is inherently a
- 30:52misogynist so I think her account is a
- 30:55really valuable one and I'm just very
- 30:57thankful that she survived to tell the
- 30:59tale
- 31:00unlike Megan who we know sort of put up
- 31:03a fight and was very in very
- 31:05disagreement with collab
- 31:07um I think Kayla did what she had to do
- 31:09to to get by ultimately you know she was
- 31:12rescued and I don't know if she ever
- 31:13thought she would be rescued But
- 31:14ultimately that happened
- 31:17but there was no good news for the
- 31:19Carver family
- 31:22I guess it was that Saturday night about
- 31:24seven o'clock it was dark
- 31:28and the coroner came up
- 31:30and said that they had positive ID that
- 31:34it was Charlie
- 31:38foreign
- 31:43you just don't want to hear those words
- 31:48Days Later Chuck was able to visit the
- 31:51Woodruff property where his son's life
- 31:54had been so cruelly taken away
- 31:57standing there on that gravel driveway
- 32:01close to the same area where he would
- 32:04have probably been laying I was just
- 32:05like
- 32:06how could he do this
- 32:10How could a man just walk out not
- 32:12knowing
- 32:12who this person was
- 32:15anything about this person
- 32:18and just end his life right there
- 32:21lying close to Charlie Carver on the
- 32:24grounds of Todd kohlhepp's Woodruff
- 32:26property with the bodies of Johnny and
- 32:28Megan coxy all three had been shot and
- 32:32left in Shallow Graves
- 32:35meanwhile Todd is already in jail
- 32:37arrested and so the the murder charges
- 32:40are already sort of stacking up against
- 32:41him while he's sitting there in those
- 32:42first initial days and being caught Todd
- 32:46is already explaining to investigators
- 32:47hey if you listen to me and if you know
- 32:50maybe if we work out a deal
- 32:51I've got a lot more to tell you guys
- 32:54charged with three murders and the
- 32:57imprisonment of Kayla Brown Todd
- 33:00kohlhepp was about to confess to a crime
- 33:02that had gone unsold for 13 years the
- 33:06Revelation would leave investigators
- 33:08completely dumbfounded he revealed to
- 33:11investigators that he had even more to
- 33:15tell them
- 33:16he is just going in depth in great
- 33:20detail about the various things that he
- 33:22did including and most importantly
- 33:25the murders of the superbug Motorsports
- 33:27families
- 33:31under 30 seconds
- 33:39I'm sorry but you guys would have been
- 33:42proud
- 33:44and when he's describing to the police
- 33:46what happened he's bragging about it
- 33:48he's saying you would have been proud of
- 33:50me he's looking for validation he's he's
- 33:53wanting other people to be impressed by
- 33:55him and we see this often in cases of
- 33:58serial killers once they are linked to a
- 34:01particular crime or a series of crime
- 34:03they want to take the credit for it they
- 34:05want full recognition for what they've
- 34:06done
- 34:08I had to wait for them one of the guys
- 34:10wasn't there I had to wait for him to
- 34:12come in
- 34:14finally all four shows up
- 34:16the investigators were completely taken
- 34:19back Cole had new details of the four
- 34:22Superbike killings that had never been
- 34:24made public they decided to call the
- 34:28families of the victims including the
- 34:30Widow of Scott Ponder Melissa brackman
- 34:35I was walking out of the movie theater
- 34:37with my family and it was Detective
- 34:39lachika and he wanted to know
- 34:43if I would be available in an hour that
- 34:46I needed to be able to talk to him and
- 34:49be home
- 34:50and I said sure
- 34:55and so he calls me and and he said we
- 34:58have a confession to the super Pike and
- 35:01I break down and I
- 35:04just I can't believe it like are you are
- 35:08you serious and he's like this is not
- 35:09something I would kid with you about and
- 35:11he started to explain have you been
- 35:13following the news there was a girl that
- 35:15we just recovered and I said I have been
- 35:17following that story and like how does
- 35:19that relate you know and he says it is
- 35:21the same guy
- 35:22after 13 years of unanswered questions
- 35:26Melissa couldn't quite believe that the
- 35:29mystery of who killed her husband had
- 35:31been solved
- 35:32[Music]
- 35:35I was happy I was angry I was sad I was
- 35:41in question of everything like what was
- 35:44his motive you know why would why would
- 35:46he have gone and why did he kill my
- 35:48mother-in-law why didn't you know if he
- 35:50was mad at the dealership why would he
- 35:51take out my mother-in-law what what's
- 35:54that about
- 35:56the community of Spartanburg where Cole
- 35:59Hep was lauded as a well-respected real
- 36:02estate agent was stunned a serial killer
- 36:05had been operating in their midst
- 36:09at this point collapse has confessed to
- 36:12these four murders he's confessed to
- 36:15killing Charlie Carver and the coxes so
- 36:18he's got seven murder charges stacked
- 36:20against him and the kidnapping of Kayla
- 36:24and shortly after since he's confessed
- 36:27there's they don't need to go to trial
- 36:29he ends up taking a plea agreement if
- 36:33you plead guilty to these seven murders
- 36:36will give you a life sentence and you'll
- 36:38avoid the death penalty and so he said
- 36:40sign me up
- 36:41on the 26th of May
- 36:442017 Todd kohlhepp was given seven
- 36:47consecutive life sentences one for each
- 36:51of his victims plus another 60 years for
- 36:54the kidnap of Kayla Brown
- 36:58years later at a civil Hearing in July
- 37:012019 the victim's loved ones seeking
- 37:05compensation from Cole heps estate were
- 37:08given an opportunity to confront the
- 37:11Killer
- 37:13the whole time I was talking we were
- 37:15engaged you know he wasn't looking at
- 37:18the ceiling or the walls or the floor
- 37:20it was me and him
- 37:22and I was telling my story of Charlie
- 37:25how he's lost
- 37:27has impacted me and my family
- 37:30as I finished up our attorney asked me
- 37:34what was the amount of Damages we were
- 37:36seeking I said yeah I wasn't seeking a
- 37:39certain amount because you can't put an
- 37:41amount on a person's life
- 37:43and no amount of money was going to
- 37:45bring him back
- 37:49because I'm only tired to hear that
- 37:57I wanted Todd to understand what he took
- 38:01[Music]
- 38:03from me
- 38:08also at the lawsuit hearing with a
- 38:11family of Scott Ponder including his
- 38:14widow Melissa
- 38:17and it was such a powerful moment
- 38:20because she had actually taken the stand
- 38:23to explain you know what what this has
- 38:25meant to her and what this has done to
- 38:26her and she used the opportunity to
- 38:28forgive collab which is so rare to see
- 38:31you know somebody who destroyed her life
- 38:34in a sense and you know killed her
- 38:36husband
- 38:38she took the high road and she sat there
- 38:40and she looked him squared in the eye
- 38:41and said Mr collab I forgive you
- 38:45did I really owe him not really but I
- 38:48just needed him to understand that you
- 38:50know what his reasoning and what he's
- 38:52using
- 38:54was playful banter from a couple of guys
- 38:58that joke around a lot and that was the
- 39:00environment and
- 39:02you know that was hard the normal person
- 39:04does not go in and wipe four people out
- 39:07because they piss you off
- 39:12as well as Melissa her son Scott was
- 39:15given the opportunity to look into the
- 39:17eyes of the man who'd taken the life of
- 39:19his father just months before he was
- 39:22born
- 39:24Scott showed maturity Beyond his years
- 39:27and is certain that his actions would be
- 39:30met with approval from his father
- 39:33I knew that he'd be proud of me and my
- 39:36mom and the rest of my family that was
- 39:39there were proud of me I just in general
- 39:40knew I was doing good for my dad and
- 39:43I knew that even though I was nervous I
- 39:45had to push through it and I just knew
- 39:46that I had to do it because this is the
- 39:47last chance I had
- 39:49to uh speak to him and just get the
- 39:51message across
- 39:53and that's basically all I wanted
- 39:57I missed Scott he was so good to me
- 40:02I'm thrilled that I have a child
- 40:05that bears his resemblance and that has
- 40:08picked up some of his characteristics
- 40:10and it actually it's it's good for me it
- 40:13makes me happy it makes me feel like
- 40:16sadly as it is it's all played out in in
- 40:20a positive way
- 40:22since his incarceration Todd kohlheppers
- 40:26hinted there may have been other victims
- 40:28in the 12-year gap between the superbike
- 40:31killings and the Woodruff murders I
- 40:35definitely feel like this story is just
- 40:36beginning I feel like it's a story that
- 40:40um that the nation is going to be
- 40:41interested in moving forward if we learn
- 40:44about other killings you know these are
- 40:45other families out there that are
- 40:47looking for answers and they could have
- 40:49answers if collab is willing to come
- 40:51forward and provide more detail that can
- 40:53lead to a discovery of a body or who
- 40:55knows what else
- 40:56Daniel gross has been writing to the
- 41:00killer to try and uncover coal hep's
- 41:02secrets
- 41:03it's a bizarre feeling every time
- 41:06every time I see a signature on those
- 41:08letters or just his little banter of you
- 41:11know hope you're doing well or you know
- 41:12whatever he might say it's a weird
- 41:15feeling because it's this gray area of
- 41:19um you know you're a serial killer and
- 41:21we're not friends by any means you know
- 41:23let's try to find some more detail here
- 41:24and bring some other families some
- 41:26closure
- 41:27cohep's ability to blend into his
- 41:30surroundings made him an exceptionally
- 41:33dangerous killer
- 41:35even the sheriff Chuck Wright mentioned
- 41:37after his arrest that he believes he
- 41:40might have even met kolhap at some point
- 41:42without even knowing that you know he's
- 41:44shaking a Serial Killer's hand and so
- 41:46that just shows that you know Todd
- 41:47collip was out there he was he was in
- 41:49the public he had built this successful
- 41:51brand
- 41:52I think for me what makes this case so
- 41:54exceptional are the different victim
- 41:56types that he targets he kills anybody
- 41:59who is a threat to his sense of self and
- 42:04I think it is that complete disregard
- 42:05for other people and anybody who gets in
- 42:08his way is going to suffer
- 42:11Cole hap was a selfish killer who
- 42:14murdered seven people for no reason four
- 42:17of them in a petulant rage that left an
- 42:20unborn child fatherless
- 42:23it is not only the lives he took but the
- 42:26lives he left behind a grieving wife a
- 42:30distraught father an emotionally scarred
- 42:33young woman that make Todd colehem one
- 42:36of the world's most evil killers
