166. 16:02good afternoon faculty members
167. 16:04distinguished guests
168. 16:06and of course the graduating class of
169. 16:082021
170. 16:09we are gathered today on the precipice
171. 16:11of our future a monumental day that is
172. 16:14no longer
173. 16:14a distant reality it seems as though
174. 16:17just yesterday our kindergarten selves
175. 16:19clung to our parents as we drowned in
176. 16:21tears
177. 16:22fearful of saying hello to a teacher's
178. 16:24name that we could barely pronounce
179. 16:27in similar fashion today we are clinging
180. 16:29on to these last moments altogether
181. 16:31drowning in robes of blue and fearful of
182. 16:33saying hello
183. 16:34to the chapter that lies ahead of us i
184. 16:37guess you can say this year has
185. 16:38zoomed by but i'm sure we're all ready
186. 16:41to retire breakout rooms
187. 16:43digital backgrounds and horrible wi-fi
188. 16:47the technological adversity of online
189. 16:49classes
190. 16:50hybrid models and unstable internet we
191. 16:53found a sense of hope and a different
192. 16:54type of connection
193. 16:56a bond that no technological platform
194. 16:58could ever divide
195. 16:59the connection of our class reaching out
196. 17:02to one another throughout times of
197. 17:04despair
198. 17:05supporting each other's successes and
199. 17:07celebrating every last moment together
200. 17:09like never before
201. 17:10we have all demonstrated that no matter
202. 17:12what this class is faced
203. 17:13we're all in this together after a year
204. 17:17of uncertainty
205. 17:18our class has spent these past few weeks
206. 17:20scrambling to find closure
207. 17:22so as we bask in these final moments
208. 17:24with one another
209. 17:25look around you to the students you've
210. 17:28shared these halls with
211. 17:30the staff members who've shown an
212. 17:32immense amount of grace
213. 17:34these past four years and the family and
214. 17:36friends who have loved and supported you
215. 17:38throughout your teenage phases when we
216. 17:41all meet again
217. 17:42at our future reunions we will laugh
218. 17:44about the stories we barely remember
219. 17:47poke fun at the trends we participated
220. 17:49in
221. 17:50and when our children see photos from
222. 17:52these years and ask
223. 17:53who are these people we'll say it was
224. 17:56these classmates that we shared the best
225. 17:58of our teenage years with
226. 18:02[Applause]
227. 18:08now i may be a little biased but i think
228. 18:11this has been the best
229. 18:12high school class ever we've had an
230. 18:14amazing run
231. 18:15although the last year and a half didn't
232. 18:17quite go the way we planned
233. 18:19i am so proud to say that i was part of
234. 18:21the class that persevered
235. 18:23it was actually all of your perseverance
236. 18:25that inspired me to give everything for
237. 18:27even a fraction of a memorable year
238. 18:29our grade is bonded in a way like giving
239. 18:32us memories from the last four years to
240. 18:34stick with us for the rest of our lives
241. 18:36so as we all close this chapter of our
242. 18:38lives and begin writing our own stories
243. 18:40i wish
244. 18:45remember that kindergartner they used to
245. 18:47cling to what was comfortable
246. 18:48we weren't able to learn and grow until
247. 18:50we left that comfort zone
248. 18:52and with our classes perseverance i have
249. 18:54the utmost confidence
250. 18:56that each and every one of us will
251. 18:58thrive as we push out of our comfort
252. 18:59zones

423. 29:50by
424. 29:51family faculty and my fellow classmates
425. 29:54at the graduating
426. 29:56of 2021. it is my honor to deliver these
427. 30:00words to you
428. 30:01as we look back on a year that has
429. 30:03challenged us in more ways than we can
430. 30:05count
431. 30:06i am here not to simply remind you of
432. 30:09this challenge
433. 30:11but rather to remind you of who we have
434. 30:14become
435. 30:15because of it a little over a year ago
436. 30:20our community rose to meet a global
437. 30:22challenge
438. 30:23it pushed us into our homes out of our
439. 30:25jobs
440. 30:27into worry concern
441. 30:31this august we sat behind a screen
442. 30:34leaving an emotional summer behind us
443. 30:36to start a school year of unquestionable
444. 30:39disconnection
445. 30:41we cannot examine the adversity of this
446. 30:43year without delving
447. 30:45into how it has ripped us apart these
448. 30:48experiences
449. 30:49of isolation and polarization
450. 30:52created an anxiety that will not so
451. 30:55easily
452. 30:58how in the face of all of this do we
453. 31:00re-humanize ourselves
454. 31:02when transitioning back to normalcy
455. 31:05feels abnormal
456. 31:09when i told my father about writing the
457. 31:11speech he said
458. 31:12just speak from the heart that was
459. 31:16a lifetime of fighting boils down to one
460. 31:19simple thing
461. 31:21let me take you back 30 years ago to
462. 31:23southern vietnam
463. 31:25my grandmother raising two young kids on
464. 31:27her own
465. 31:28finally ready to leave her country
466. 31:30behind her after 14 years of waiting
467. 31:3414 years of my grandfather's
468. 31:36imprisonment
469. 31:37were serving on the wrong side of the

473. 31:48language
474. 31:49of this new normal both working harder
475. 31:52than anyone
476. 31:53i've ever known to be here in this
477. 31:55moment
478. 31:56with me i stand before you
479. 32:00as a young woman a child of immigrants
480. 32:04a person who has fought long hard with
481. 32:07her identity
482. 32:08tell you that courage thrives in
483. 32:11adversity
484. 32:13and while not all of us are brilliant
485. 32:15scholars
486. 32:17athletes or artists we are
487. 32:21outrageous because courage isn't
488. 32:23synchronous with our vision of success
489. 32:26courage is synchronous with simply being
490. 32:29human
491. 32:31so we remind you of our courage
492. 32:36this year i watched from afar as my
493. 32:39classmates redefined what courage meant
494. 32:41to me
495. 32:42we accepted the reality of our situation
496. 32:46and switched forward with unquenchable
497. 32:48determination
498. 32:50a dialogue began between the students
499. 32:53and the administrators at pusd in which
500. 32:56we recommitted ourselves
501. 32:58to actively creating safer and more
502. 33:00effortable spaces
503. 33:02for students of all backgrounds and
504. 33:04identities
505. 33:06next came the beach cleanups food drives
506. 33:09donation programs
507. 33:11unfinished yet victorious sports seasons
508. 33:14a dance concert virtual tournaments
509. 33:17i've watched us jump in and give back
510. 33:20create a community narrative and a time
511. 33:23that so desperately needed one
512. 33:25to fight for togetherness despite being
513. 33:28apart
514. 33:29as only the class of 2021 can
515. 33:33today we set off to finish that journey
516. 33:36with our heads held arm-in-arm with each
517. 33:40other
518. 33:40for the first and final time
519. 33:44and we remind ourselves that we have
520. 33:46arrived at this moment by courage
521. 33:49courage taken in every step through
522. 33:51these halls through every rough day
523. 33:54through times where we felt like we
524. 33:56could not continue
525. 33:58let us take a moment to acknowledge the
526. 34:00stories of the people
527. 34:01sitting beside us of their trials and
528. 34:04hardships
529. 34:06of everything they've fought for for it
530. 34:09is courage that has not only brightened
531. 34:11up this year but of every year before it
532. 34:14leading us to this moment in which we
533. 34:17stand together
534. 34:18as one thank you and congratulations
