- 0:07Namaskaram to all the astikas
- 0:10of Bharat Desha of our beloved India
- 0:13as well as
- 0:15astikas who are living in the other
- 0:18countries.
- 0:19So to all the astikas world over a big
- 0:22namaskaram.
- 0:24I am your Dushyant Sridhar
- 0:26for the last 20 plus years have been
- 0:28associated with our Vedic scriptures
- 0:30either in the form of speaking about it
- 0:33or writing on it,
- 0:36directing a couple of movies. So this
- 0:38has been my little space and I'm sure
- 0:41with all your blessings it should go
- 0:43well ahead.
- 0:44At the outset
- 0:46all our
- 0:49the scriptures that we revere, we hold
- 0:50so close to our hearts especially the
- 0:53Ramayana
- 0:55time and again that has been made into
- 0:58movie, series, serial, video games,
- 1:02books,
- 1:04dance dramas, music concerts,
- 1:08board games, so on and so forth. So
- 1:12Hinduism gives us that space
- 1:15to visualize all our scriptures in the
- 1:18medium that we feel we are very
- 1:20comfortable with.
- 1:21And in my humble opinion cinema,
- 1:24entertainment is is a very big space, a
- 1:26very powerful medium to communicate the
- 1:29quintessence of our scriptures.
- 1:31So at the outset I would like to
- 1:34congratulate the entire team of the
- 1:36producers, the director, the cast, the
- 1:39crew, whoever has worked on the
- 1:42movie, the very best.
- 1:45So you've taken up a project such as
- 1:47this, the Ramayana which is so very
- 1:49rooted and dharmic in its roots to
- 1:52project. But I just happened to watch
- 1:54the movie this morning
- 1:56just for educational purposes. I wanted
- 2:00to know how it has been projected. So at
- 2:02the outset, the director in the
- 2:05disclaimer said that we have largely
- 2:07based
- 2:08our movie on the Valmiki Ramayana. Of
- 2:10course, like any other disclaimer, it
- 2:12said that there's no resemblance to this
- 2:14and that and all of that. So they have
- 2:15mentioned Valmiki at the start.
- 2:18So my review of this movie is going to
- 2:20be very strictly academic oriented. So
- 2:24if certain points seem a bit harsh,
- 2:29it is not stemming out of any animosity
- 2:31towards the team or anybody. It's just a
- 2:36direct review of what I felt about the
- 2:38movie. One.
- 2:40At the outset, they say that there is a
- 2:42war between the Devas and the Asuras.
- 2:45I don't know what Asuras they are
- 2:46talking about. The director and the team
- 2:49should be very clear that there is a
- 2:51clan called the Devas who are called the
- 2:53Suras. They are all Aditi's sons. Then
- 2:56we have Aditi's sons who are the Asuras
- 2:59or
- 3:00for example, Hiranyakashipu is an Asura.
- 3:04His son Prahlada is an Asura. So they
- 3:06are all Asuras.
- 3:08Now they get the director
- 3:11and the entire team whoever has done the
- 3:13story and the screenplay,
- 3:16they're getting confused between Asuras
- 3:19and Rakshasas.
- 3:20So every time Kaikeshi says
- 3:25Where are the Asur?
- 3:27They are all
- 3:29not related to
- 3:31Diti anyway. So they are not
- 3:34Asuras, they are Rakshasas. And even
- 3:37later when Shurpanakha comes in the
- 3:39second half of the movie, when she comes
- 3:42in her chariot and arrives in
- 3:43Panchavati, she says
- 3:49She has to say this is Rakshason ki
- 3:50bhumi.
- 3:51She has to mention Rakshasas there. So
- 3:54first of all, they are not able to
- 3:55distinguish Asuras and
- 3:57Rakshasas.
- 3:59Second,
- 4:01it is shown as if Ravana is
- 4:04defeated. Sorry, initially Devas are
- 4:07defeating the Rakshasas and the
- 4:08Rakshasas were in the dungeons of Lanka.
- 4:11They were getting only rise. The Devas
- 4:13were very harsh at them and the
- 4:16Rakshasas were so very meek, so very
- 4:18good. They were getting only parched
- 4:20grains. Why
- 4:22I think that is a very wrong approach.
- 4:25So you're you're taking all of our
- 4:27politics and our agenda there to the
- 4:29movies, not required.
- 4:32Now Dashanana. So Ravana is called
- 4:34Dashanana initially. I agree with it
- 4:36because he receives the name Ravana only
- 4:38after he has lifted the Kailasha Parvata
- 4:41where he cries when Lord Shiva precious
- 4:44presses his toe, he cries. That's when
- 4:46he receives the name Ravana. Before that
- 4:48he was called Dashanana. Fine. Dashanana
- 4:50is initially shown to be a very sattvic
- 4:53person playing the veena and all of that
- 4:55always into Shastras. Then the mother
- 4:58Kaikeyi has to come in kind of brainwash
- 5:00him and say, oh, you have to seek
- 5:03revenge for all the humiliation we have
- 5:05been meted to go do tapasya. I don't
- 5:08know why why this had to come into
- 5:10picture. See, your as a movie maker, you
- 5:12can take the freedom to slightly change,
- 5:14but this changes the entire
- 5:17the the the the the character of that
- 5:19particular person.
- 5:21Then he leaves for starts for doing
- 5:23tapasya. When he starts doing tapasya,
- 5:26there is no janeu. There's no punal.
- 5:28There's no upavita.
- 5:30Towards the end of it, he has received a
- 5:31boon. Suddenly when he comes back to his
- 5:33palace, there is a
- 5:35janeu. So
- 5:37when you're doing tapasya, will you take
- 5:39one day off, get your janeu ceremony
- 5:41done, and then will you come back? So
- 5:43why has there been no consistency? When
- 5:45he starts, he should have a janeu. When
- 5:47he returns, he should have a janeu.
- 5:50Then Ravana, the moment he becomes the
- 5:52king of Lanka,
- 5:54he gives a very socialist speech. He
- 5:55tells his janta,
- 5:57if I have a house in gold, I will also
- 6:00give you a house in gold. When did the
- 6:03original Rakshasa king called Ravana
- 6:05give such compassionate speeches? He was
- 6:07very merciless. And I will also give you
- 6:11a palace and gold. All that is
- 6:13irrelevant. Now, there is this big thing
- 6:15about Shiva Tandava Stotra.
- 6:22It's very popular these days. I don't
- 6:23know who has composed this. To the best
- 6:25of my knowledge, it will be maximum 50
- 6:28to 100 years old.
- 6:30The composition is very beautiful,
- 6:32rhythmic, very suited for dance
- 6:35performances. All that is fine, but it
- 6:36will be barely 50 to 100 years old.
- 6:38In the original Ramayana, in the Uttara
- 6:40Kanda, when Ravana clearly goes to
- 6:43Kailasha Parvata, Nandi stops him. He
- 6:48humiliates Nandi. Nandi gives him a
- 6:50curse. And then he tries to lift the
- 6:52Parvata. Then Shiva brings his arrogance
- 6:54down. That is when he sings a few
- 6:57samans, which is
- 6:59in Samaveda, the mantras which have to
- 7:02be sung in a certain way. He impresses
- 7:04Shiva by singing those samans. That's
- 7:06all.
- 7:07There is no
- 7:08mention of him composing verses.
- 7:11There is no mention of it.
- 7:12Now, another thing is he Okay, let's say
- 7:15for a minute Shiva Tandava Stotra is
- 7:17what Ravana has composed.
- 7:19The problem comes he composes
- 7:22Shiva Tandava Stotra and Shiva has to do
- 7:24the tandava for the stotra. This man is
- 7:26dancing. Ravana is dancing. I don't know
- 7:28why. Will you Then it's Ravana tandava.
- 7:30It's not Shiva tandava. Shiva has to do
- 7:32the tandava, not Ravana.
- 7:35Then whenever Ravana comes, there is a
- 7:37small I I could kind of listen to some
- 7:40some BG in the background, which is a
- 7:42combo of Tamil and Telugu.
- 7:45I don't know
- 7:46the team has to do real real real
- 7:48research
- 7:50to know why is Tamil associated with
- 7:52Ravana. Ravana and Tamil are two
- 7:54different things. Tamil is a beautiful
- 7:56language, beautiful culture, ancient
- 7:58language. But why is Ravana
- 8:01being shown in the background with the
- 8:02Tamil chorus? That's what I heard. I
- 8:05could be wrong. If I'm wrong, please do
- 8:06correct me.
- 8:08Then when he fights the elephant of
- 8:12Indra called Airavata, the four tusks of
- 8:14Airavata pierce should pierce him and
- 8:17those scars should be found on Ravana's
- 8:19chest which he will sported to people
- 8:21stating see I have fought Airavata.
- 8:24No scars are found when he fights
- 8:26Airavata.
- 8:27Then there is one portion where Ravana
- 8:30forgives Indra. He says Indra
- 8:35It's as if Ravana is being very
- 8:36compassionate. He's a rakshasa.
- 8:37Rakshasas are people who are merciless.
- 8:40This is Rama's dialogue in the Yuddha
- 8:43Kandam where he sees Ravana bereft of
- 8:45weapons and he says you are bereft of
- 8:47weapons. I will not fight you. I will
- 8:48not kill you. You go home today.
- 8:51Prepare yourself and come tomorrow.
- 8:53That's because Rama is compassionate.
- 8:55But here Ravana tells Indra. Next
- 8:59when the payasam comes out of
- 9:02the
- 9:04Agni Kundam, it should be in a golden
- 9:06pot with a silver lid. I didn't see that
- 9:08silver lid formation. Next
- 9:12here Ravana doesn't include the humans
- 9:15while he seeks boons to Brahma because
- 9:17he believes humans are generally very
- 9:19powerless. Why should I even include
- 9:21them in my list? That was Ravana's
- 9:23thought. Here Indra tells another Rishi
- 9:26or Vishnu has to incarnate as a human.
- 9:30Why why will Bhagavan incarnate as a
- 9:32powerless human?
- 9:34So Indra himself concurs with Ravana
- 9:36that humans are powerless. Next
- 9:40I don't know Jatayu is believed to be
- 9:42the friend of Dasharatha, no doubt. But
- 9:45irrelevantly Jatayu comes at the start
- 9:47of Bala Kandam, looks into how what is
- 9:49happening in Ayodhya. Then he showers
- 9:52flower petals on Rama. All that is
- 9:54irrelevant.
- 9:56Now Rama, young Rama,
- 9:58Vashistha trains him in archery. That
- 10:01time Rama shoots arrows on what you
- 10:03know? Watermelon. Why will you have a
- 10:06watermelon at that period?
- 10:09I I can't fathom this.
- 10:10Then Manthara, the maid servant to
- 10:12Kaikeyi,
- 10:14she has been there throughout. So at the
- 10:16start in Balakandam, in the middle of
- 10:18Balakandam, at the start of Ayodhya
- 10:20Kandam, she is known to be a person
- 10:23who whose words are very sharp. She can
- 10:26brainwash people. She comes only on the
- 10:29day before Rama's Pattabhishekam.
- 10:44So she was so strong in one day she came
- 10:46and brainwashed Kaikeyi.
- 10:47But this Manthara is a very unsuccessful
- 10:50mantra because she has been there with
- 10:51Kaikeyi throughout her Ayodhya journey.
- 10:53So I don't know why mantra is shown that
- 10:55way.
- 10:56Now
- 10:57a rakshasa comes and informs Ravana.
- 11:00Ravana, you know what? Vishnu has taken
- 11:02incarnation as Rama and he's learning
- 11:04Shastram and Shastram.
- 11:06Is it some political scoop? How do they
- 11:08even know? Does Bhagavan inform that I
- 11:10am the avatara? Our acharyas have
- 11:13deciphered that he's an avatara.
- 11:15No informer should come and inform.
- 11:18Next Vishwamitra tells Dasharatha, what
- 11:20should he tell oh this mantra Tataka,
- 11:23Subahu, Maricha are all troubling me.
- 11:25Send Rama. He says Ravana has sent these
- 11:29rakshasas to trouble me. I don't know
- 11:31why Ravana becomes so important in this
- 11:33discussion.
- 11:35Then Vishwamitra
- 11:38this is just a suggestion, probably in
- 11:40the second part, Dasharatha and his
- 11:42entire clan belong to Shukla Yajurveda.
- 11:45So probably you can just have some BGM
- 11:47of Shukla Yajurveda based Purusha Suktam
- 11:49in the background that will add more
- 11:50gravitas.
- 11:52Then when Rama is initially fighting
- 11:54with the rakshasas when he goes in the
- 11:56middle of the forest to protect
- 11:57Vishwamitra Yajna, he uses a knife to
- 12:00attack some rakshasa from the behind.
- 12:02Rama,
- 12:04best of dharmic persons will never
- 12:06attack from the behind. I don't know who
- 12:08gave this idea.
- 12:10Then well I have to give some positive.
- 12:13I would say that the Lakshmana, the
- 12:14person who's pairing playing the
- 12:16Lakshmana character is extremely
- 12:18impressive, very handsome, very very
- 12:21good in dialogue delivery and I would
- 12:24say he's
- 12:25Lakshmana from the very angry young man
- 12:27perspective now moves to a slightly
- 12:29humorous character,
- 12:31which is fine. You know, that that
- 12:32amount of liberty should be taken. He
- 12:34was good.
- 12:35Now,
- 12:35Shiva's bow kept in Mithila in Janaka's
- 12:38court. It is not Shiva's bow which is
- 12:41Pinaka
- 12:42because they say this is Pinaka Pinaka.
- 12:44That Pinaka did not break. It was
- 12:46another bow which was used by Shiva
- 12:48during a yuddham which had a crack,
- 12:50which was sent one king after the other
- 12:52and finally it reached the hands of
- 12:55Janaka who placed it and that was
- 12:57broken. So it was not Pinaka. Every time
- 13:00they keep repeating the same word
- 13:01Pinaka. Shiva has a bow called Pinaka,
- 13:04so he's called Pinaki and that Pinaka is
- 13:06different from this. Next is
- 13:10when Vishwamitra has to tell Dasharatha
- 13:13has to tell Janaka, Sita's father, now
- 13:15that everybody is straight, let my
- 13:17sishya Rama try.
- 13:20Rama is not Vishwamitra's sishya. He's
- 13:22Vashistha's sishya. Just like that,
- 13:24people will not steal sishyas. He can at
- 13:27most say he's Vashistha's sishya who has
- 13:29come with me, but he should not say he's
- 13:30my sishya. Then Rama and Sita are
- 13:33talking before the marriage. As they
- 13:35walk by the garden,
- 13:37Rama tells Sita, see, I have promised my
- 13:39brothers that all four of us will get
- 13:41married at the same time.
- 13:43Maybe that's told as a joke or
- 13:44something, but I don't know in which
- 13:46version did Rama make such a
- 13:48illogical promise that all four will get
- 13:50married at the same time.
- 13:52Then Parashurama, when Parashurama comes
- 13:56to admonish Rama,
- 13:58one person tells the other, oh, this is
- 14:00Mahavishnu's sixth avatara.
- 14:02How did they get the number?
- 14:04These numbers of Dashavatara came much
- 14:07later and we have plenty of avataras
- 14:10besides the Dashavatara. So we don't
- 14:11know which order, which avatara is which
- 14:13number. They should not give Wikipedia
- 14:16messages through dialogues in the movie.
- 14:19Next is now Parashurama comes in and
- 14:21fights. Parashurama's parachute
- 14:23disappears because of Rama's strength
- 14:24and Parashurama gives a bow. Then what
- 14:26will
- 14:27Parashurama do now? He'll be Parashurama
- 14:29without Parashu. Parashurama minus
- 14:31Parashu. Then he'll become Rama.
- 14:33That is one. Now Rama keeps calling
- 14:38I don't know in the Ramayana there's
- 14:40every mention he will addresses it
- 14:42address her as mother.
- 14:44So this
- 14:46these are all very
- 14:47new words that we use. But for Rama he
- 14:50was she was like mother. You don't have
- 14:52to keep calling her
- 14:54Then
- 14:55well, there is one place where the
- 14:57person who's playing
- 14:58role, Dasharatha's wife's role is
- 15:00extremely angry. She used to ask for
- 15:02boons. So she's holding the sari like
- 15:04this and she's got eyes like this, open
- 15:06hair
- 15:07and if you look at that scene for a
- 15:09minute, if you just take the frame, it
- 15:11will be like one of the Hindi serials we
- 15:13are watching where the wife is extremely
- 15:15angry with the husband. It doesn't give
- 15:17you the period feel.
- 15:19Then now coming to
- 15:21husband
- 15:23So
- 15:24is shown as a person who who
- 15:27molest woman. He pulls a woman in front
- 15:29of Ravana, makes her sit. Ravana gets
- 15:31angry.
- 15:33Ravana was 10 times more a molester than
- 15:36this
- 15:37So why should we paint Ravana in such a
- 15:39great picture? He he may have known how
- 15:43to play the veena. He may have obtained
- 15:45the boon from Shiva. He may have
- 15:47obtained the boon from Brahma, but that
- 15:48doesn't change his character which is a
- 15:50simple molester. He used to misbehave
- 15:52with married women. So that is what we
- 15:55have to show.
- 15:57Now this
- 15:59coming to Yash. Yash has played the role
- 16:01of
- 16:03Ravana. I would say overall his body
- 16:06structure suits Ravana, his beard and
- 16:08all of that.
- 16:09But eyes can be a bit more expressive.
- 16:11So that's very important when it comes
- 16:14to body language. Viradha
- 16:17Now there is Viradha who comes and
- 16:19abducts Sita. That's there in the
- 16:20Ramayana. Here too we see a character
- 16:22who abducts Rama Sita.
- 16:24Uh he doesn't even abduct Sita. That's
- 16:26the thing. He's there and Rama defeats
- 16:28him.
- 16:29Now he hasn't abducted Sita.
- 16:31Second is we don't even know who that
- 16:33person's name is. Just like that one
- 16:34person comes and fights. How will the
- 16:36audience know if you don't tell this is
- 16:37Viradha that this is Viradha? So we'll
- 16:39have to mention that. Um then
- 16:43now towards the end of Yuddha
- 16:45Ayodhya Kandam, Rama goes to the
- 16:47hermitage of Atri Maharishi and Anasuya.
- 16:50Towards in the middle around the middle
- 16:52of
- 16:54Aranya Kandam, he goes to the ashrama of
- 16:56Agastya and Lopamudra.
- 16:58It is only in the ashrama of Atri
- 17:01Anasuya, Anasuya gifts ornaments to
- 17:03Sita.
- 17:04It is only in Agastya's ashrama, Agastya
- 17:06gives divyastrams to Rama. I think they
- 17:09have made some combination of the two.
- 17:11Uh
- 17:12there is one Rishi, I think he's called
- 17:13Agastya if I'm right. He serves gives
- 17:16divyastras to Rama. There is another
- 17:18lady there who gives ornaments. Who is
- 17:21this? Is this Lopamudra or is it
- 17:23Anasuya? We have to get that correct.
- 17:25Agastya. If at all you're showing
- 17:27Agastya, he's to be short. He cannot be
- 17:29like any of us. Otherwise why will you
- 17:30call him Agastya? The one who Kumbhamuni
- 17:33who was short, extremely short. Uh then
- 17:36there there are occasions where the
- 17:38hermitage, the parnashala is being
- 17:40built. It is only Lakshmana who has to
- 17:42build. Rama should not even lift a brick
- 17:45because Rama was still a raja there.
- 17:47Ra Lakshmana did not believe that Rama
- 17:50had come as a hermit. To his eyes, Rama
- 17:52was a raja. So he will not let Rama do
- 17:56these kind of construction works. So it
- 17:58should be only Lakshmana who does that.
- 18:00Then
- 18:02Shurpanakha comes. She comes in a
- 18:04chariot. The that meeting is as if
- 18:06Shurpanakha comes. She asks
- 18:09First mistake, it's Rakshason ki bhumi.
- 18:11She has to say it's Rakshason ki bhumi.
- 18:13Why are you all here? They all give
- 18:14their own introductions. They say this
- 18:16is my Aadhar number, this is my PAN
- 18:18number and all of that. Okay, that's all
- 18:20fine.
- 18:20Now she returns after speaking to them,
- 18:22she goes back. As she goes back, Sita
- 18:26comes and talks to Rama and smilingly
- 18:28asked, did you see how Surpanakha looked
- 18:30at you?
- 18:31And Rama said, why?
- 18:33She has so much of love for you.
- 18:37My point is which normal person also
- 18:40will talk like this that that lady has
- 18:42hit on you, she is very happy and will
- 18:44Sita do it? Why do you have to create
- 18:47such
- 18:48irrelevant, unwarranted situations in
- 18:50the Ramayana?
- 18:52Then
- 18:53I saw the Hindi version now.
- 18:57It's Shurpanakha, not Surpanakha. It's
- 19:01Shurpa. Shurpa is a winnowing fan. So
- 19:04she had nails like the winnowing fan. So
- 19:06she's called Shurpanakha, sharp ones.
- 19:09Shurpanakha, not Surpanakha.
- 19:13Then
- 19:15Yeah, now when she misbehaves with Sita,
- 19:18her nose should be cut and so should her
- 19:22ears be. So her nose should be cut in a
- 19:24way where she's not able to pronounce
- 19:26words clearly because there's a Sanskrit
- 19:28word called
- 19:31Here she just gets one thin scratch
- 19:33scratch. For that she could have taken a
- 19:35TT injection,
- 19:37put some Dettol and gone. There's no
- 19:39need for her to go and complain to
- 19:41Ravana. She's lost her nose. Where will
- 19:43you show that loss of nose?
- 19:45And she goes in the form of a bird.
- 19:47She disguises and goes in the form of a
- 19:49bird. Remember, when Shukracharya lost
- 19:52his eye, he was
- 19:55he was still having
- 19:57he went as a bumblebee.
- 19:58One of the eyes was lost. So for the
- 20:00bumblebee also one eye went away.
- 20:02Correct? So here as well, when you show
- 20:05Shurpanakha
- 20:07transforming into a bird, that bird
- 20:08should have a cut on the nose.
- 20:10So that's another thing.
- 20:13What is the
- 20:14status in the Ramayana? A person who has
- 20:17been
- 20:18who has not been killed in the
- 20:21called Akampana goes and talks
- 20:24the valor of Rama to Ravana. So he
- 20:27praises Rama's valor. So Akampana does
- 20:30that.
- 20:30See Shurpanakha goes and praises Sita's
- 20:33beauty. So it is only after listening to
- 20:35Shurpanakha's narration that Ravana is
- 20:38enamored and wants to have Sita in his
- 20:40life.
- 20:41Here there's no such description.
- 20:43Shurpanakha goes and says see what those
- 20:45brothers have done to me and it is as if
- 20:47Ravana is taking revenge for what
- 20:50humiliation was meted to his sister.
- 20:52There is no situation where they're
- 20:53showing this man is
- 20:55a lustful man.
- 20:57That's wrong. You cannot change that.
- 20:59See if we whitewash the crimes committed
- 21:02by the criminals, then we are as bad as
- 21:05the criminal. So Ravana misbehaved with
- 21:08plenty of women and he wanted to
- 21:10misbehave with Sita as well. So that's
- 21:11his nature. That's his fitrat. So you
- 21:13have to show that.
- 21:16Next
- 21:18in the
- 21:20Ravana Rama single-handedly fights the
- 21:23rakshasas. There is no need for
- 21:25Lakshmana's help. There's no need for
- 21:26Sita's help. Maybe Sita was adept in
- 21:29shastram, shastram. She knew how to
- 21:30fight. But you will never let Sita fight
- 21:33because Sita will want Rama to prove his
- 21:36valor win and then she as a queen she
- 21:38will appreciate. Now Sita is also
- 21:40equally fighting, Lakshmana is also
- 21:42fighting, Rama is also fighting. You're
- 21:44taking away the big certificate.
- 21:52You're taking that away.
- 21:54Now
- 21:56coming to certain other aspects. Yeah.
- 21:59So Lakshman rekha. Why does this keep
- 22:02coming
- 22:03Lakshmana taking and drawing one line?
- 22:05All this is not there. He abducted Sita.
- 22:08See when you abduct that woman, let's
- 22:10take somebody abducts us. We will
- 22:13give it a good fight, right? You will
- 22:14shout, you will cry. Here Sita doesn't
- 22:17cry. She doesn't shout. Suddenly she's
- 22:20inside the Pushpaka Vimana and she
- 22:22doesn't even cry. So I'm not saying that
- 22:26you'll have to show women as meek and
- 22:28weak. Sita is very strong, but even
- 22:31strong people in certain moments in
- 22:33their life, they will feel a bit
- 22:34vulnerable. That's how Valmiki projects.
- 22:36She tries to stop. She hits at Ravana.
- 22:39She does all that. Here in this movie,
- 22:41Sai Pallavi doesn't move an inch. So,
- 22:44Lakshman Rekha irrelevant, not needed.
- 22:48Ravana should come as a Tridandi
- 22:50Sanyasi. There's a clear mention in the
- 22:52Ramayana.
- 22:54Then there is one mention where this man
- 22:57who comes, Ravana who comes, says, Sita,
- 22:59come and give me Bhiksha. Sita says, I
- 23:01will not come. You could have stopped
- 23:02there. Sita now asks, okay, tell me in
- 23:05Rigveda the 10th Mandala in the
- 23:07Hiranyagarbha Sukta, tell me two mantras
- 23:09and then only I'll come.
- 23:11What is this some security question for
- 23:13password or something that you do this?
- 23:15Why when did Sita do all of that? And
- 23:19now the sword that was been gifted by
- 23:21Shiva to Ravana at the start in the
- 23:23movie is slightly different from the
- 23:26sword that is shown by Ravana that that
- 23:29was used to attack Jatayu. Maybe I'm a
- 23:31bit wrong. That was just shown for a few
- 23:33seconds. That needs to be checked.
- 23:35Ravana fights Jatayu and he breaks one
- 23:38of the claw and keeps it as a remnant in
- 23:41his Pushpaka Vimana.
- 23:43Now Sita throws away jewelry. She throws
- 23:45her bangles. She's bereft of earrings.
- 23:48Wrong. She had earrings called
- 23:50Swadamstra in her ears. She had chain.
- 23:53She would not throw away everything. Out
- 23:55of her two anklets, she threw only one.
- 23:57And throughout the Ramayana, except the
- 24:00portion where she's been abducted and
- 24:01she's housed in Lanka, you have to show
- 24:03her in Chignum, a bun. The hair has to
- 24:05be in the form of a bun.
- 24:07Only in the face where she was separated
- 24:10from Rama, she will have a braid. So
- 24:13that braid will come
- 24:14that Veni will come only during that
- 24:17abduction face and after she was in that
- 24:20Ashokavana.
- 24:24Yeah.
- 24:25Jatayu tries to remember
- 24:28tries to tell Rama the powers of Ravana,
- 24:30Kumbhakarna, of his entire army. That
- 24:33portion was very good. I liked it. Now
- 24:35coming to the aesthetics, Lanka streets.
- 24:39It had like proper square square tiles
- 24:41and it had Italian mansion like flower
- 24:45pots and
- 24:47the interiors of the Lanka assembly
- 24:49which was under Kubera and later went to
- 24:51Ravana, very very ugly. And
- 24:55I kind of saw one depiction of a statue
- 24:59of
- 25:00in the movie they are showing as if it
- 25:02is Indra seated on the elephant and
- 25:03somebody from the sky is just attacking
- 25:06him, which is Ravana.
- 25:08That is actually in my eyes when I saw
- 25:11it resembled the sculpture of Bhima
- 25:14attacking Bhagadatta while he was in an
- 25:16elephant in the Mahabharata war from the
- 25:18Halebidu temple of the Hoysala
- 25:19architecture. They have used it here,
- 25:21not a grave mistake could have been
- 25:23avoided.
- 25:25Now Ayodhya flooring of the palace, it
- 25:28looks so Islamic that inlaid work of
- 25:31marble and all of that that's Islamic
- 25:33Mughal architecture.
- 25:35And the landscaping of the gardens looks
- 25:37very very artificial. It should be more
- 25:40rustic, earth like.
- 25:42The Tataka Vanam that they showed that
- 25:44was very good. I liked it. And then
- 25:46there is an Agra fort like landscaping
- 25:49in Mithila as well. And Ayodhya has no
- 25:52huts.
- 25:53Everybody seems to be living in villas
- 25:55and row houses. So probably we should
- 25:57all get shifted to Ayodhya. And in the
- 26:00original Ramayana, Dasharatha after
- 26:02knowing that Rama is going to leave
- 26:04Ayodhya, has left from Ayodhya, has
- 26:06reached the forest. He couldn't even get
- 26:08up from his bed.
- 26:10Here Dasharatha is gets up from his bed,
- 26:12is seated on the sofa and is
- 26:15thrown irrelevant. Now
- 26:18Kaikeyi, Kaikeyi who whose role is being
- 26:21done by Shobhana, the actress and
- 26:25Surpanakha's role is being done by Rakul
- 26:27Preet Singh. So they all don't wear like
- 26:29full hand blouses because that's how it
- 26:31was in the past because you didn't have
- 26:33the concept of stitched clothes. So they
- 26:35would just wear something that would
- 26:36cover their chest and then a
- 26:39saree a long cloth like structure. They
- 26:41wouldn't have blouses.
- 26:43shown that way whereas Sita, her sisters
- 26:45Mandavi, Shrutakeerti, Urmila, their
- 26:47mothers, her mother, everybody is
- 26:49wearing like proper designer blouses. I
- 26:51don't know why there's so much of a
- 26:53mismatch.
- 26:55Now that even before Rama's coronated,
- 26:58Rama's crown is bigger than Dasharatha's
- 27:00crown.
- 27:01So what is coronation all about?
- 27:04And easily when you look at Rama who's
- 27:07going to get married to Sita, he will
- 27:09look easily 25 to 30 years old.
- 27:12Rama was married very very young. So
- 27:15show a younger Rama and then graduate
- 27:18him to this Rama is my
- 27:21suggestion. Then the footwear that the
- 27:23menus, especially Rama Bharata, it's all
- 27:26like you know, you go to Manyavar and
- 27:28other shops, you get those proper good
- 27:30footwear, right? It looks like that. Not
- 27:32needed. Go to the
- 27:34ancient ways how people lived. It will
- 27:36be a wrong wood like thing maybe gilded
- 27:39in gold and with one small
- 27:41protruding portion. That's how it should
- 27:43be. Mithila, all the girls are wearing
- 27:46lehenga. So for a minute, you'll forget
- 27:48that this is a period movie and you'll
- 27:49think it's some Bollywood movie where
- 27:51people are dancing with lehengas. And
- 27:53then Sita is wearing a velvet, red
- 27:55velvet blouse with so much of chunky
- 27:58work and all of that.
- 27:59I don't know. The costume designer
- 28:01really really needs to work hard at
- 28:04least for his forthcoming movies. I felt
- 28:07that went terribly wrong. And now when
- 28:10Dasharatha managed wants to coronate
- 28:13Rama as the king, one night I saw one
- 28:15scene where he comes, takes the crown,
- 28:18gives it to Rama and says see you just
- 28:19give it a try, try wearing this. This is
- 28:22not some trial room in some mall where
- 28:24we go and try your clothes, right? So
- 28:26that's not the way you should do it. And
- 28:28saree, when you are draping a saree for
- 28:32women in the period movies, it should be
- 28:33a
- 28:35meaning, it should be tight, it should
- 28:37go down, come from the back for both men
- 28:40and women. That's how it is. Here you
- 28:42cannot have like a proper six yard saree
- 28:44of these days that you give. There is
- 28:46one portion in the forest, in the middle
- 28:48of the forest Sita is walking.
- 28:49That too she's walking with a
- 28:53saffron color saree, light saffron color
- 28:55saree. Sita wore silk clothes in the
- 28:57forest. Saffron color saree, red blouse,
- 29:00a sling bag a bag
- 29:03and a braid. Everything that can go
- 29:05wrong could go wrong in her dressing.
- 29:08And then Sita in the forest, she puts
- 29:10her
- 29:12pallu in the form of a scarf. I don't
- 29:14know when did women in the past
- 29:16especially in the Ramayana, there's a
- 29:18mention that she wore it like a scarf.
- 29:20Not needed.
- 29:23And then
- 29:25when Rama leaves Ayodhya, starts from
- 29:28Ayodhya, that time itself he has jata
- 29:29which is wrong. Hair has to grow. It
- 29:32won't grow overnight.
- 29:33In the forest later when there is
- 29:35overgrown hair, he asks for the milk of
- 29:38the latex of the
- 29:40and then applies it and makes it a jata.
- 29:42Not immediately the moment he starts
- 29:43from Ayodhya.
- 29:45Then
- 29:47yeah, the music
- 29:52I thought it kind of resonated more with
- 29:56maybe some Sufi music. Nothing wrong
- 29:58with Sufi music, but why will you put
- 30:00that into Ramayana movie? Second, there
- 30:02was this
- 30:05kind of tune somewhere. I don't remember
- 30:07which song, but I've heard that tune
- 30:09elsewhere. So see coming to music
- 30:12I've grown up listening to a lot of
- 30:15the compositions in the movies of AR
- 30:18Rahman. So for the last 25 30 years he
- 30:20has been very very strong and we have
- 30:22listened to such nice tunes. But this
- 30:25movie I felt it's a big let down. The
- 30:26music is a very very big let down.
- 30:31Yeah.
- 30:32So this is with respect to the movie.
- 30:35One or two good points are there, of
- 30:36course, they are the Tataka Vanam and
- 30:38they fight. And Jatayu
- 30:42kind of briefing what are Ravana's
- 30:44powers. All that is fine.
- 30:47Aesthetics is poor.
- 30:51I would say the best for me in terms of
- 30:53acting, I would say the Lakshman
- 30:55character came out very well.
- 30:58I would say Surpanakha was decent.
- 31:00Kaikeyi, Shobana who has played was
- 31:02decent.
- 31:03Ravana, he has a stature. He has a
- 31:05screen presence when he comes. Yes.
- 31:08But can be a bit more expressive with
- 31:10eyes. Rama and Sita, though Ranbir
- 31:12Kapoor and Sai Pallavi are like national
- 31:14award winners, they are very strong. But
- 31:17as characters, probably that's also
- 31:18because when you play such iconic
- 31:20characters like Rama and Lakshmana, you
- 31:22should have less known people, extremely
- 31:25talented people, lesser known people
- 31:27from the drama, dramatics field who have
- 31:30to do that role. If you put established
- 31:32actors, it is very tough for the
- 31:34audience to unmask them from their
- 31:36original and see them as Rama and Sita.
- 31:39And I felt that Sai Pallavi
- 31:42as an actor she's good, but to fit
- 31:45Sita's role is
- 31:47I don't know. It it didn't fit her is
- 31:48what I felt.
- 31:50I don't know. Many of them would have
- 31:52felt that she was very good at Sita, but
- 31:53as Sita, I felt that Sai somebody else
- 31:56other than Sai Pallavi could have
- 31:58somebody else. I don't know who.
- 32:01And coming to Rama, throughout the
- 32:02Ramayana, there's a mention that he was
- 32:04dark skin.
- 32:05You don't have to bring somebody from
- 32:07some other continent, but can't you show
- 32:09some dark brown skin? Why should you
- 32:11show a very fairer skin for Rama?
- 32:15That's how the Ramayana is, right? So my
- 32:19my concluding remarks will be, yes, you
- 32:21can take some license. You can take that
- 32:23liberty to do some changes in the
- 32:25screenplay, but do not change the story.
- 32:27Don't make
- 32:29Ravana look very good because he used to
- 32:31misbehave with Sita.
- 32:33So that's the biggest drawback he had.
- 32:35Show it the way it is.
- 32:37And he had lust, and that should be
- 32:39visible in his eyes. It's not as if just
- 32:41like that he comes and wants to take
- 32:43revenge for what his sister underwent.
- 32:46And what his sister underwent, that is
- 32:47also not shown clearly. So I would say
- 32:50you can go watch the movie.
- 32:52I because there are so many people who
- 32:54are dependent, their livelihoods are
- 32:56dependent on movie
- 32:58Go watch. I wouldn't say don't watch,
- 33:00but don't believe this is the Ramayana.
- 33:02There's a lot more. Read the books,
- 33:06listen to lectures, research on it. That
- 33:10will be more helpful rather than
- 33:11trusting what this movie has to say.
- 33:13Yeah. Anyways, I wish the best of luck
- 33:16for the entire team of cast and crew. If
- 33:19you're planning to do the part two,
- 33:22try researching it better and presenting
- 33:24it better.
