- 0:01okay so here we go video lecture number
- 0:05two the railroads I've been working on
- 0:08the railroad all the live long day
- 0:09actually have it up and sitting the
- 0:11house right here folding laundry it's
- 0:15very upsetting and so basically the
- 0:17railroad transformed America after the
- 0:19Civil War I mean more than anything else
- 0:20the railroad transformed the country and
- 0:23it totally makes sense it's just like
- 0:24the car the automobile transformed the
- 0:25country 1920s to the 1950s I mean even
- 0:28until the day how important the car is
- 0:30and so the railroads was was really
- 0:34really important for so many reasons I
- 0:35mean the railroads really knit the
- 0:36country together and all of a sudden you
- 0:38had the ability to move around and to
- 0:39move your goods around the country
- 0:41because of the railroads the railroads
- 0:43are going to spur economic development
- 0:44in fact the railroads are the
- 0:46cornerstone of the Second Industrial
- 0:48Revolution the Second Industrial
- 0:50Revolution you can remember it with an
- 0:52acronym rose like rose like that song
- 0:55rose has this dawn right that's which is
- 0:59a great song by I can't remember who
- 1:01sings a song I'm thinking poison but
- 1:03that's not right that's not a Guns
- 1:05N'Roses anyway so basically every risk
- 1:08for rose uh the R stands for railroad
- 1:12right railroad the oh is oil this is the
- 1:17time of Rockefeller this is after the
- 1:18Civil War Rockefeller and Standard Oil
- 1:20the S stands for steel Carnegie steel
- 1:25and the e stands for electricity really
- 1:27you could even think about Edison and
- 1:29Tesla and electricity and so basically
- 1:31those four things more than anything
- 1:33else really create this second to this
- 1:35revolution and the most important is a
- 1:37railroad the railroad will employ more
- 1:39people
- 1:39the first major strike in the country
- 1:42when I say major strike there were of
- 1:43course strikes before this with a major
- 1:45kind of national first national strike
- 1:47is a railroad strike the railroads
- 1:52really knit the country together
- 1:54the railroads displaced the Native
- 1:55Americans they understood what was
- 1:57happening they totally understood the
- 1:58population was moving out in the great
- 2:00plains the railroads by 1862 one of the
- 2:04things that Lincoln does as President
- 2:06Abraham Lincoln who I love very much one
- 2:08of the things that Abraham Lincoln does
- 2:09along with being the great Emancipator
- 2:11and all the other things he does
- 2:13Lincoln also as a Whig tries to
- 2:16basically bring the country economically
- 2:17kinda more together that was kind of a
- 2:20Whig dream and so they're going to pass
- 2:22in 1862 the the National Railroad Act I
- 2:25think it's what it's called but anyway
- 2:26they're going to create that the
- 2:27foundation for the for the the Pacific
- 2:30Railroad act I'm sorry the Pacific
- 2:31Railroad act and they're going to create
- 2:32the foundation for the for the trans got
- 2:34in a railroad and that thing is going to
- 2:35be done in seven years and that is going
- 2:37to be the beginning of railroads coming
- 2:40out across the country rather than
- 2:41railroad just railroads or everything
- 2:43right once the railroads start going to
- 2:45the plains all of a sudden farmers have
- 2:47access to goods now again it's not like
- 2:49Amazon
- 2:50I love Amazon in fact I have the mark of
- 2:53Amazon one Mike I shouldn't joke about
- 2:55that please I'm like don't I'm not sorry
- 2:57I didn't mean to joke about that I'm
- 2:59Debra but Amazon is amazing right Amazon
- 3:01is really amazing
- 3:02we have Amazon Prime by the way I'm not
- 3:05a spokesman for Amazon at this time
- 3:08although I do have Alexa in my kitchen
- 3:10in fact yeah so basically so Amazon is
- 3:14amazing because I can order something
- 3:16and it's here in two days tomorrow I'm
- 3:18expecting two books and I'm so excited
- 3:20that's what the railroad does for
- 3:22farmers thanks to a mellower catalog
- 3:25called sears and roebuck starts that
- 3:27with wood like clocks and it turns into
- 3:30this mass ability to ship things I
- 3:33remember growing up in the 1970s 1980s
- 3:35mom we would come home and loved it I
- 3:37lived a little chunk of walls Texas and
- 3:39we would come home and we would get this
- 3:40we would get the Sears Roebuck catalog I
- 3:42feel like is I'm like moving I'm moving
- 3:44the screen is like sorry but it's like a
- 3:46roller coaster and I would go through
- 3:49there and I would circle all the things
- 3:51I wanted out of the Sears & Roebuck
- 3:52catalog and my mom would say I can't get
- 3:54that sorry son
- 3:56we're not getting man and Crick but
- 3:58again always and you could order things
- 4:00on in these farms in the Midwest through
- 4:03the railroad right and they would you
- 4:05can order houses complete houses my
- 4:08grandfather
- 4:08Missy's wife actually mine mine I'm
- 4:11sorry my father-in-law Missy's Missy's
- 4:13husband this is Tara is an on
- 4:16instruction kind of guy and in fact we
- 4:18have a symbol different things didn't
- 4:20work out because he immediately throws
- 4:21the instructions away I would never let
- 4:23him get around a Sears & Roebuck house
- 4:26that cannot because you need those
- 4:28so you can you can build a house all of
- 4:30a sudden the railroad depots are really
- 4:31important because next the railroads
- 4:34runs the telegraph so not only the
- 4:36railroads bring goods the road brings
- 4:37information isn't that what we all want
- 4:39today we want information right we want
- 4:41information at our fingertips like I was
- 4:44I'm frustrated when I don't know what's
- 4:47going to happen immediately right I mean
- 4:49so so the railroad provides that the
- 4:52railroad creates a continental market
- 4:55prices of goods drop you have an
- 4:58industrial revolution that's created
- 5:00because all of a sudden Goods commercial
- 5:02Goods can go to people who never had
- 5:04access to commercial goods before so
- 5:06also you're going to have production
- 5:07increasing with certain material you're
- 5:10going to have land values going up
- 5:11you're gonna have property taxes
- 5:12increasing the railroad is going to the
- 5:15time zones are going to be created
- 5:16because the railroad right I mean the
- 5:18railroad really said that there had to
- 5:21be a way of efficiently recording time
- 5:24because a railroads obviously not like a
- 5:26ship right a ship
- 5:27now that ships going in either tomorrow
- 5:29or Friday I don't know when that ships
- 5:31are coming but a railroad you need that
- 5:33railroad Valentine right I mean you you
- 5:36want to know when the railroads coming
- 5:37in so basically the railroad is going to
- 5:39advocate for time sense at fit first or
- 5:42100 time zones they get it down to for
- 5:45the time zones we have today and then
- 5:47some he kind of thing but it's - and the
- 5:49railroad changes the way we think about
- 5:51time made time Americans have always
- 5:54been kind of a set obsessed with time
- 5:56but the railroad makes us more obsessed
- 5:59that the need for efficiency with time
- 6:02it was even a paradigm shift in the
- 6:041880s 1890s the way that people thought
- 6:07about the importance of time right and
- 6:10again we're all it's kind of tied to
- 6:11time now but through the railroad really
- 6:14kind of led to that the rower was
- 6:16tremendously important it was over built
- 6:19he's gonna it's going to cause against
- 6:21strikes economic messes railroads
- 6:24building next to each other
- 6:26the railroads are going to give
- 6:28politicians and journalists secret
- 6:29rights in fact the first law federal law
- 6:34that really interferes with business is
- 6:36called the Interstate Commerce Act and
- 6:37it was an attempt was kind of a half
- 6:40heart
- 6:40attempt to try to regulate some of the
- 6:43things that railroad rosin
- 6:44so the railroads were immensely
- 6:47important in in allowing America to
- 6:51develop industrially in the 1870s 1880s
- 6:561890s even though it started 1840s 1850s
- 6:59that's when this development really
- 7:01really begin to explode so their system
- 7:04the railroads thanks
