- 0:00my name is Rafael Palo and I am a
- 0:02professional baseball
- 0:03player let me start by telling you this
- 0:06I have never used steroids today Raphael
- 0:09Palo once hailed as one of the greatest
- 0:12baseball players of all time saw his
- 0:14legacy get tainted by a steroid Scandal
- 0:17that forever deprived him of the biggest
- 0:19baseball honor before we dive in any
- 0:22further please don't forget to subscribe
- 0:25pom's story truly begins at the moment
- 0:27when his life as he had always known it
- 0:30came to a screeching halt it was March
- 0:322005 a time when steroids had evolved
- 0:35from being just a baseball issue into a
- 0:38full-blown National crisis the stakes
- 0:41were incredibly High Federal prosecutors
- 0:44were gearing up for the Balo laboratory
- 0:46case a massive legal battle involving
- 0:49Barry Bond's personal trainer and other
- 0:51high-profile
- 0:53figures Mark Maguire's name had also
- 0:55been pulled into the spotlight linked to
- 0:57a steroid ring that the FBI had
- 1:00investigated back in the 1990s to add
- 1:02fuel to the fire just a month before
- 1:05this pivotal moment Jose cono dropped a
- 1:07bombshell on the baseball world with his
- 1:10explosive Memoir in his book Cano didn't
- 1:13hold back naming some of the biggest
- 1:15stars in the game as steroid users and
- 1:17Palo was one of them suddenly the entire
- 1:20sport seemed under a cloud of Suspicion
- 1:23but here's where it gets interesting at
- 1:25this point in time no major star had
- 1:28actually tested positive for steroids
- 1:30the rumors were swirling the accusations
- 1:33were flying but from the Public's point
- 1:35of view there was still no hard evidence
- 1:38but then only 6 weeks later the
- 1:41unthinkable happened Palo received a
- 1:43call from the Players Association that
- 1:45would forever alter his legacy he had
- 1:48tested positive for stanos alol a
- 1:50performance-enhancing steroid commonly
- 1:52known as Winstrol the substance widely
- 1:55circulated in Underground Fitness
- 1:56circles across the country had somehow
- 1:59made its way into palo's system and in
- 2:02that moment everything he had stood for
- 2:04crumbled Palo stood firm in his belief
- 2:07that he was innocent and quickly ordered
- 2:09an appeal he argued that the positive
- 2:11test result likely came from a
- 2:13contaminated vial of b12 vitamins which
- 2:16had been injected into him by his wife
- 2:18according to Palo the vial was provided
- 2:21by his teammate Miguel tahada the
- 2:23arbitration panel found palo's defense
- 2:25to be compelling but without any solid
- 2:28evidence to counter the positive test
- 2:31his grievance was officially denied on
- 2:33August 1st interestingly just the day
- 2:36before on July 31st in the bottom of the
- 2:38ninth inning Pomo hit what would turn
- 2:40out to be a fairly meaningless single to
- 2:42left field during an equally meaningless
- 2:45home game against the Chicago White
- 2:46Socks but while the game itself didn't
- 2:49matter much Palo had been quietly
- 2:51battling to clear his name for months
- 2:54hoping to reverse the test result and
- 2:55save his reputation with a suspension
- 2:58hanging over him pal lero didn't say a
- 3:00word to his teammates after the game
- 3:02instead he simply packed up his things
- 3:04and left flying off to tedar Bro New
- 3:07Jersey with his wife Lynn and their two
- 3:09sons who by then knew about his
- 3:12situation when he woke up the next day
- 3:14The Fallout was nothing short of
- 3:17catastrophic Major League Baseball
- 3:19commissioner Bud salig announced that
- 3:21Palo would serve a 10-game suspension
- 3:24officially making him the first big star
- 3:26to be suspended for steroid use the
- 3:28story immediately dominated every major
- 3:31news Outlet across the country and the
- 3:33reaction from Baseball fans ranged from
- 3:35Pure shock to outright anger once the
- 3:38suspension was over Palo returned to the
- 3:41field on what had originally been
- 3:42planned as Raphael Palo Appreciation Day
- 3:45in Baltimore however instead of
- 3:48receiving the warm reception he might
- 3:49have expected he was met with a mixed
- 3:51crowd some booing others chanting his
- 3:54name it was a far cry from the
- 3:56celebration it was supposed to be in the
- 3:59games that followed palmo one of the
- 4:01greatest hitters of his time seemed like
- 4:03a shadow of his former self reflecting
- 4:06on that difficult time he said I crawled
- 4:09the rest of the way I was barely
- 4:12functional he struggled through a
- 4:14painful two for 26 slump and by
- 4:16September after missing several games
- 4:19due to injury the Orioles advised him to
- 4:21sit out the rest of the season that's
- 4:23how it all ended no big announcement no
- 4:26farewell celebration that was my
- 4:28retirement he says I didn't get to go
- 4:30out on my own terms they just sent me
- 4:33home the story of how a star was born
- 4:37well Cat Ready the pitch to The
- 4:38left-handed hitter fast ball grounded
- 4:40into right field base hit now the pitch
- 4:43pomero swings and drives one deep in the
- 4:44right center back goes Palo made his
- 4:47major league debut on September 8 1986
- 4:50playing left field for the Chicago Cubs
- 4:52in a game against the Philadelphia

- 5:05games racking up 61 hits 14 home runs
- 5:09and 30 RB with a solid 276 batting
- 5:13average while with the Cubs Palo
- 5:15primarily played in left field but
- 5:17occasionally filled in at other Outfield
- 5:19positions or first base when needed
- 5:22pomero signed a 5-year contract worth
- 5:24over $30 million with the Baltimore
- 5:26Orioles in his first season with the
- 5:28team which was cut short by a work
- 5:30stoppage he hit 23 home runs and drove
- 5:33in 76 RB before 1995 pal Mero had only
- 5:38hit more than 30 home runs once but from
- 5:401995 onward he began a remarkable streak
- 5:44of hitting 38 or more home runs every
- 5:46season until 2003 in 1996 Palo led the
- 5:51Orioles in home runs batting average in
- 5:54RBIs hitting 39 home runs driving in 142
- 5:58runs and collecting 181 hits he helped

- 6:45leading the team for the fourth
- 6:47consecutive year he also had 183 hits
- 6:50121 RBIs and a 296 batting average Palo
- 6:56was offered a fiveyear $50 million deal
- 6:58to stay with the Orioles but chose to
