- 0:16hi everyone welcome to unveiling Islam
- 0:19I'm David wood here with brother Rasheed
- 0:21and brother Rasheed there are lots of
- 0:24specifics that we can get into um when
- 0:26we're examining the Quran there are all
- 0:28sorts of different issues that arise
- 0:30things that the Quran says on different
- 0:33topics but uh lots of Christians don't
- 0:37even know what the Quran is they think
- 0:38it's you know the the the Muslim version
- 0:41of the Bible and that's true in a sense
- 0:43as far as being their their core text
- 0:45but there are some serious differences
- 0:46so why don't you start us off like at
- 0:48the very beginning of uh you know the
- 0:51most the the most basic issues like what
- 0:54what does what is the Quran word Quran
- 0:56even mean Quran is from the Arabic word
- 1:01Quran so Quran is not even an Arabic
- 1:05word so even if Muslims say it's Arabic
- 1:08it's not it's
- 1:10Syriac it comes from Syriac language
- 1:12quite a bit of Syriac going around some
- 1:15sources it's corono actually Orana it
- 1:19depends if the west or the East
- 1:24Soo corono or corana means a scriptures
- 1:28a liturgy
- 1:30so when in the early days they go to
- 1:32church and they read certain readings a
- 1:36reading is called
- 1:39Horan so Muhammad or whoever compiled
- 1:43the Quran use that
- 1:45word a liturgy to name this
- 1:50book we read also in history when they
- 1:53gathered the book they they didn't find
- 1:55a name for it actually some sources say
- 1:59they tried to to name it a
- 2:03gospel and so they they said mus now we
- 2:07say mus mus is a
- 2:11book is um anything written we can call
- 2:16it sah this is sah for example so mus is
- 2:19a book that Gathering of
- 2:23um pages so it's a book MAV is a book
- 2:28Quran is this book
- 2:30it's uh written in Arabic classical
- 2:33Arabic very old it's like reading
- 2:36Shakespeare now or even worse um so we
- 2:39don't understand most of it if you go to
- 2:42mosques or like go to the street and ask
- 2:44Muslims in Morocco or Tunisia or Egypt
- 2:49you ask them some basic words in the
- 2:51Quran they would not know the meaning
- 2:53and and people don't even even Scholars
- 2:56don't know the meaning I was just
- 2:57reading uh a chapter of the Quran and
- 3:00reading the commentary and it actually
- 3:02said There are 16 interpretations of
- 3:04what this word means I was like what
- 3:05what
- 3:06what there is not a single verse in the
- 3:10Quran I never read in the
- 3:13commentaries there are differences about
- 3:17this
- 3:18verse I never until now I never found
- 3:21one that there is a total agreement
- 3:23about the meaning of that verse and that
- 3:26is I I think that is an issue because
- 3:27one of the things the Quran repeatedly
- 3:29claims is it talks about how clear it is
- 3:32like like like a
- 3:34lot like a
- 3:36lot book yeah so like the impression you
- 3:40get from reading these claims about how
- 3:42clear it is is like Allah had all
- 3:44eternity to get this book exactly the
- 3:46way he wanted it and he made it like the
- 3:47the perfect most clear language he could
- 3:50and then you read it and it's uh you
- 3:52know you can you can read a dozen
- 3:55different completely different
- 3:56interpretations of a verse yes and it's
- 4:00114
- 4:02chapters and it starts with the longest
- 4:05to the shortest kind of very strange way
- 4:08to arrange your exactly no
- 4:10chronology and sometimes it jumps from
- 4:14one topic to another it's talking about
- 4:16Moses now suddenly Noah suddenly Jesus
- 4:21suddenly about the poist at Muhammad's
- 4:24time suddenly about how Heaven proves
- 4:28the existence of God and you see no no
- 4:32link between topics it's not like the
- 4:36Bible you read Genesis and then you
- 4:38expect what's coming next and you follow
- 4:41the process in the Quran there is no
- 4:44chronology there is no
- 4:47logic uh and that's because of the way
- 4:50How It Was Written Muhammad had scribes
- 4:53around him so each time he gets this
- 4:56chance and he starts like he I think for
- 5:00me it's an epilepsy we can talk about it
- 5:02certainly sounds like that and then
- 5:04after a while he wakes up and he says
- 5:06hey write this verse it came to me and
- 5:10they start writing then they collected
- 5:12them later so of course they they didn't
- 5:15put them in chronology so they just like
- 5:17kind of gathered them together and just
- 5:19compiled them and they started naming
- 5:21the chapters oh put that in the chapter
- 5:24that talks about the cow so now we have
- 5:25a chapter of the cow oh put that in the
- 5:28chapter that talks about Mary and then
- 5:30we have the chapter of Mary and then oh
- 5:33yeah put that in the chapter of Alan or
- 5:37Al the table so they put it in the table
- 5:40and that's why uh the it's like a a
- 5:45chaos it's just bunch of verses gathered
- 5:49together put in this book and when you
- 5:51read it you get really confused yeah
- 5:54that's uh that is an ongoing uh issue
- 5:57with the arrangement what's what's
- 5:58interesting is you can
- 6:01we can understand why this difficulty
- 6:03arose because if Muhammad is just you
- 6:05know on various uh occasions when people
- 6:08are asking him questions that he he
- 6:11claims to have received a revelation
- 6:13they don't have it in a book they don't
- 6:15have it's he's he's not making this book
- 6:19as he goes along and then they're just
- 6:21adding you know new chapters uh to it
- 6:24he's he's he's he's giving verses and
- 6:26passages to his followers telling them
- 6:27to memorize it and then some of them are
- 6:29memorizing and so on so it's all
- 6:30circulating and then Muhammad dies and
- 6:32it's and it's like oh we've got all this
- 6:35stuff we've got all this stuff that
- 6:37Muhammad's been quoting for all these uh
- 6:39years to us and we need to put it
- 6:41together and it's just so weird to say
- 6:43hey let's just you know we got the
- 6:44little prayer at the beginning but other
- 6:45than that we'll go longest to shortest
- 6:46even though it's completely out of out
- 6:48of order the one of the problems is the
- 6:50Quran doesn't give you even the
- 6:52background of certain verses so we have
- 6:54to dig somewhere else to understand why
- 6:57he said this for whom
- 7:00and what's the topic here exactly for
- 7:04example they ask you
- 7:07about who yeah who asked why so you
- 7:12don't understand you have to go to
- 7:13commentary they say some Jews some Poli
- 7:17different interpretations and that
- 7:19started from the beginning of the Quran
- 7:21you you of course you
- 7:24studied um the first revelation how it
- 7:28came to Muhammad it told us he was in a
- 7:30cave and suddenly the angel came to him
- 7:33and said read read and then the first
- 7:37chapter in the Quran started which is
- 7:4196 and but who knows exactly because
- 7:45even that story when we dig at the
- 7:48beginning was they said it was a dream
- 7:51and then they changed it through history
- 7:53now it's a fact it's not just a dream it
- 7:55happened literally they believe it
- 7:57happened as is we don't no exactly and
- 8:00that's why the Quran is just a
- 8:01collection so that 96 is not even it
- 8:04should it should be the first one yeah
- 8:07if you if you were arranging it in order
- 8:08of Revelation like you could there there
- 8:10are multiple there are multiple ways of
- 8:13arranging the material that makes sense
- 8:14one would be in order that mamading the
- 8:17Revelation or you could go Chron
- 8:19chronologically like if it's talking
- 8:20about Abraham put that here
- 8:22it'ses putting all these putting all
- 8:24these in in order uh but no they went
- 8:27they went uh they went longest to
- 8:28shortest and and that's why if if you
- 8:30want to study the story of Moses you
- 8:33will not find it in one chapter you have
- 8:35to just collect verses from here and
- 8:38there and then you have the story of
- 8:40Moses and if some of them are repeated
- 8:43literally the same and if you want to
- 8:46study the the life of Jesus you need to
- 8:49gather from here and there and here and
- 8:51there and then you collect it's not like
- 8:54the gospels start with the birth and
- 8:56then ends with the crucifixion and the
- 8:58resurrection
- 9:00no it's not like that you just go it's
- 9:02scattered all over the Quran yeah and so
- 9:04it's a it's quite a bit of work and so
- 9:06some of the
- 9:07issues that that you've already brought
- 9:10up it you know one the Quran is saying
- 9:14things if you do not know what this is
- 9:15responding to or what question this is
- 9:17responding to or the the background you
- 9:19don't even know the people who are named
- 9:21if you don't know the historical
- 9:22background you can't understand this and
- 9:25then the way it's arranged is confusing
- 9:26is especially as something we'll be
- 9:28talking about
- 9:30uh eventually the the idea of abreg that
- 9:33uh earlier Revelations can be canceled
- 9:35by later ones but if it's not an order
- 9:38you need all of these outside sources
- 9:40and commentaries to understand a book
- 9:45that constantly brags about how clear
- 9:47and fully explained that that it already
- 9:49is the Quran is not sufficient for a
- 9:52Muslim the Quran always has to have
- 9:56something with it it's not like the
- 9:59Bible you can't read the Bible and it's
- 10:01sufficient for a Christian for the Quran
- 10:03you will not understand even some verses
- 10:06what they are saying the meaning unless
- 10:09you have the background and have other
- 10:11commentaries that will help you for
- 10:13example when it talks about Zade Zade
- 10:16divorcing his wife who is Zade M what's
- 10:20the relationship with Muhammad and we
- 10:22don't know so you have you you need to
- 10:25dig somewhere else or like when it
- 10:28mentions um
- 10:30lookman we don't know who's lookman
- 10:34who's this guy who's
- 10:36the who's this so you need to dig and
- 10:40and the problem when you go to
- 10:41commentary is you don't have one opinion
- 10:43so many times as I said so they they
- 10:46have different versions so you're just
- 10:49uh it's a very difficult task actually
- 10:52yeah and lots of times the the sources
- 10:54that you would need to even understand
- 10:55these passages are are much later and so
- 10:58how how can I trust them um one more
- 11:01important difference just for for
- 11:02Christians who are who are watching
- 11:03because you you've mentioned the Bible
- 11:05the Bible is a collection of um of
- 11:09writings of various Witnesses and here
- 11:13talks about Adam and Abraham and Moses
- 11:16and Jesus and so on but it's all just
- 11:19from Revelation specifically to
- 11:21supposedly to one guy Muhammad Muhammad
- 11:24supposedly got Revelation through the
- 11:27angel Gabriel from
- 11:30God Allah himself it's his word letter
- 11:33for letter word for word he had no hand
- 11:37in it he was just a receiving vessel
- 11:40like he receives it then he says it and
- 11:43it's written in Arabic you can't pray in
- 11:46other language they say it can't be even
- 11:48translated they say the translation of
- 11:51the meanings of the Quran God will not
- 11:54accept your prayer unless you do it in
- 11:56Arabic because the it's the holy
- 11:57language and and uh if you want to get
- 12:01really um the right meaning you have to
- 12:04study it in Arabic that's what they say
- 12:06because even translation it picks one
- 12:09one side or one background or one
- 12:13commentary and it follows it yeah and so
- 12:16uh at the end of the day this all comes
- 12:18down to one witness it's it's all from
- 12:20Muhammad so everything's riding on one
- 12:22guy as opposed to the Bible where we've
- 12:23got an entire cloud of witnesses uh
- 12:25explaining these things to us and so
- 12:28seems like we need to look at these
- 12:30things a bit more closely and we'll be
- 12:32doing that uh in future installments
- 12:35here
