- 0:08Assalamu alaykum. Peace unto all of you.
- 0:10Brothers and sisters. We know that
- 0:11everything that Allah has prescribed for
- 0:13us is simultaneously beneficial for us
- 0:16at the spiritual, [music] physical, and
- 0:18mental levels. I'm sure everyone has a
- 0:20general awareness of how the Quran
- 0:23recitation and how doing can have
- 0:25certain benefits for us from a spiritual
- 0:27standpoint. This is a known fact. uh but
- 0:29at the same time it can have certain
- 0:31physical and emotional benefits as well.
- 0:33So in today's video though I would like
- 0:35to present to you certain intriguing
- 0:38mechanisms behind how these benefits may
- 0:40be occurring. And the reason I'm
- 0:42presenting this is if we have a better
- 0:43idea of some of the mechanisms involved
- 0:45in how reciting Quran and doing are
- 0:48helping us then that can help us to
- 0:50learn how to enhance or increase these
- 0:52benefits even more. So uh getting right
- 0:55into it. First of all, we know that
- 0:57Allah reminds us in the Quran about how
- 1:00we should recite the Quran when he says
- 1:05the scholars say that reciting with has
- 1:08many meanings. It means reciting with
- 1:11contemplation and reflection most
- 1:12importantly. It also means reciting
- 1:14slowly and distinctly so that you
- 1:17pronounce the letters properly and with
- 1:19proper cognition and focus. So when you
- 1:22recite in this way, there are three
- 1:24points that I want to highlight brothers
- 1:26and sisters for this particular video.
- 1:28There's the contemplative or reflective
- 1:30aspect. There's also the aspect of the
- 1:32sounds that are generated and the
- 1:34humming and the vibrations that are
- 1:35involved as well as the breathing
- 1:37techniques that we follow during the
- 1:39recitation. So the first benefit or the
- 1:41first mechanism that I wanted to point
- 1:43out when we recite with uh tartil and
- 1:45when we recite with what we call tadab
- 1:48or takar with contemplation with deep
- 1:50thought and focus uh we know that there
- 1:53are several changes that occur at the
- 1:55brain level. So I'm going to attach some
- 1:56of the studies below the video but some
- 1:58of the studies where they've done EEGs
- 2:00have found that number one uh this
- 2:02basically increases the generation of
- 2:05alpha and theta waves on an EEG. What
- 2:08does that mean? Increased alpha and
- 2:10theta waves mean a very relaxed state,
- 2:13an increased state of creativity, less
- 2:15anxiety, less fear, a calm nervous
- 2:18system. With those who memorize the
- 2:20Quran, they also found in published
- 2:21studies that they have an increase in
- 2:24gray matter and white matter. So what
- 2:26does this mean? It means they have
- 2:28improved focus. They have improved
- 2:30memory. They have improved processing
- 2:32and speed of processing of thoughts as
- 2:34well as emotions. So subhan Allah, this
- 2:36is one benefit that has been studied. A
- 2:38second mechanism that I wanted to point
- 2:40out is better control of something known
- 2:42as the HPA axis which is the
- 2:44hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis.
- 2:46Medical professionals know that this is
- 2:48a system of the body that Allah has
- 2:50designed that helps to control our
- 2:52stress response. It helps to reduce and
- 2:54calm down cortisol levels which means
- 2:57you're more relaxed. You can have better
- 2:59sleep. Your stress coping mechanisms
- 3:02improve. You can have less fear. Even
- 3:04less brain fog. So again this is another
- 3:06mechanism. A third very important
- 3:08mechanism relates to what is known as
- 3:10vagus nerve stimulation. So when we
- 3:12recite properly and with proper tartil
- 3:16uh with slow deep breathing and with the
- 3:18sounds that are generated uh by the
- 3:21recitation this also helps to stimulate
- 3:23our vag nerve. So what is the vagus
- 3:26nerve? The vagus nerve brothers and
- 3:28sisters is one of the most important
- 3:29nerves in our body. It's one of the
- 3:31longest in the body. It runs from your
- 3:33brain down through your throat and all
- 3:35the way down to your intestines. It
- 3:36connects to many of the different organ
- 3:38systems including your heart, your
- 3:40lungs, your kidneys, your liver, your
- 3:42spleen, your stomach and more. So, it's
- 3:45extremely important. Uh, it's basically
- 3:47a super highway that connects the brain
- 3:50uh to the rest of the major organ
- 3:52systems. It [clears throat] is a key
- 3:53part of the what's known as the
- 3:55parasympathetic nervous system. In
- 3:57medical terms, the nervous system is
- 3:59divided into the sympathetic and the
- 4:01parasympathetic systems. The sympathetic
- 4:03system in common terms many people call
- 4:06fight or flight. The opposite of that
- 4:08parasympathetic many people call rest
- 4:10and digest. Some people call it cruise
- 4:12control. Uh in any case we know that the
- 4:15vagus nerve is one of the key parts of
- 4:17the parasympathetic nervous system which
- 4:19relaxes your whole body. It relaxes the
- 4:22functions we don't even think about. So,
- 4:24subhan Allah, all the functions we don't
- 4:25think about like our breathing rate, our
- 4:28pulse, our uh digestion, our immunity
- 4:31and more are all helped to be controlled
- 4:34by the vagus nerve and the
- 4:35parasympathetic nervous system. So, how
- 4:37does this relate to what I was saying
- 4:39about recitation of the Quran? So,
- 4:42listen to the following recitation and
- 4:44then I'll explain to you how this is
- 4:46critical.
- 4:52You are
- 4:56[singing]
- 5:03send
- 5:22Dear
- 5:24[singing]
- 5:30[singing]
- 5:33>> when you hear proper recitation of the
- 5:35Quran, one of the things we hear is the
- 5:37proper pronunciation and marage. We hear
- 5:39the proper pronunciation of the sha. For
- 5:42example,
- 5:46we also hear what we call
- 5:49in the for example.
- 5:56These sounds generate a type of humming
- 5:59and a type of vibration which is
- 6:01transmitted to the vagus nerve which is
- 6:03in your throat and right next to your
- 6:05vocal cords. And that vibration or
- 6:07humming is then transmitted and
- 6:09resonates down to all of the major
- 6:11organs including our heart. So subhan
- 6:14Allah this is one thing I wanted to
- 6:15point out. A second thing that occurs
- 6:17with proper tail recitation is the
- 6:19breathing that occurs between uh verses
- 6:22as well as between some words sometimes.
- 6:25So it should be a slow rhythmic type of
- 6:28recitation. And what happens with this
- 6:30slow deep breathing especially when your
- 6:32exhale is longer than your inhale you
- 6:35take a deep breath and you [snorts]
- 6:36recite right and so the result of that
- 6:38is the diaphragm puts pressure on the
- 6:42abdomen as well as on the chest and that
- 6:44in turn stimulates the vagus nerve. So
- 6:47what are the results of vagus nerve
- 6:49stimulation? It resulted in lower
- 6:51stress, lower anxiety, lower depression,
- 6:54lower heart rate, uh lower blood
- 6:56pressure, lower chronic inflammation,
- 6:58improved immunity, improved digestion,
- 7:01and even improved sleep. And that's just
- 7:03to name some of the benefits. Subhan
- 7:05Allah. Think about it. There's not a
- 7:06single medication that can have that
- 7:09many benefits that quickly. Uh and this
- 7:11is just a very simple method of
- 7:13stimulating the vagus nerve through
- 7:14proper breathing and through proper
- 7:17pronunciation and recitation. If that
- 7:20weren't enough, there's another benefit,
- 7:22a fourth uh mechanism that I'd like to
- 7:24point out which relates to the fact that
- 7:25that humming and the vibration of the
- 7:27sounds as well as slow deep breathing
- 7:30also trigger the production of something
- 7:31known as nitric oxide. What is nitric
- 7:34oxide? Nitric oxide is also a very
- 7:37beneficial molecule that the body
- 7:38produces. It produces it by converting
- 7:40an amino acid that we get from food
- 7:42known as uh larginine. When you end up
- 7:45with more nitric oxide, it is what's
- 7:48known as a vasoddilator. So it expands
- 7:51blood vessels and that in turn results
- 7:53in improved blood circulation, lower
- 7:56blood pressure. It improves your heart
- 7:58health. It increases your exercise
- 8:00stamina and endurance. It improves your
- 8:03immunity. It even enhances brain
- 8:05function and focus. It can even help in
- 8:08wound healing and generating what's
- 8:10known as angioenesis or new tiny blood
- 8:12vessels. So, subhan Allah, Allahbar is
- 8:15so amazing that uh something as simple
- 8:17as reciting the Quran properly can even
- 8:20trigger vasil uh stimulation and nitric
- 8:23oxide production. A fifth benefit that
- 8:25is also truly amazing, brothers and
- 8:27sisters, is that even when you listen to
- 8:29the Quran and you're not doing any type
- 8:30of recitation, this can have certain
- 8:33benefits with respect to the vagus
- 8:34nerve. How is that possible? Allah made
- 8:36a system where the vagus nerve has
- 8:39branches that even come into the inner
- 8:41part of the ear. When you listen to
- 8:43Quran, you hear the sound of the Quran
- 8:46which sends sound waves into your ear
- 8:48which sends vibrations into the body
- 8:51which in turn stimulate the vagus nerve
- 8:53which in turn transmits these vibrations
- 8:56to the rest of the body as well. So
- 8:58subhan Allah even listening to the Quran
- 9:00can have benefits with respect to
- 9:02calming the vag nerve. If you want to
- 9:04get the maximum benefit from reciting
- 9:07the Quran with respect to calming the
- 9:10vag nerve and helping your mental
- 9:11health, here are a few simple tips to
- 9:14summarize. Number one, have the proper
- 9:16intention when you recite. Brothers and
- 9:18sisters, I can't emphasize enough. If
- 9:20you don't have a positive intent or you
- 9:23don't have a positive expectation in
- 9:24mind when you recite Quran or make dua,
- 9:27then how are you going to get the
- 9:28result? Allah could of course still
- 9:30grant you, you know, your healing, but
- 9:32obviously you're going to get better
- 9:33results when you have that positive
- 9:35intent. Think about it when we've all
- 9:37heard of the placebo effect. In the
- 9:38placebo effect, there are millions of
- 9:40people including non-Muslims who have
- 9:43just the positive expectation that a
- 9:46sugar pill will benefit them and the
- 9:48sugar pill benefits them. And this has
- 9:50been proven over the course of decades.
- 9:52So imagine if you rely on Allah, the
- 9:54source and enabler of all healing in the
- 9:57universe, who is infinitely more
- 9:59powerful than a sugar pill. Imagine what
- 10:01the results could be. Number two, we
- 10:03want to recite the Quran, as I said,
- 10:05with contemplation and reflection. Don't
- 10:08just recite quickly. Don't just say
- 10:12we know how the prophet wasallam
- 10:14reprimanded the companion who prayed too
- 10:16fast, who was must have been reciting
- 10:18very quickly. Think of reciting slowly
- 10:20and contemplation as the main part of
- 10:22the cake. And the humming, the
- 10:24vibrations that are generated, the
- 10:26breathing techniques are kind of like
- 10:27the icing on the cake or like the
- 10:29cherries on top of the cake. So again,
- 10:31I've sometimes talked to people and
- 10:32they'll say, "Well, what if I just
- 10:34listen to some calm relaxing music and
- 10:37do some breathing techniques like in
- 10:38meditation or yoga?" Yes, you can get
- 10:40some benefits from that too. But the key
- 10:42is still the and reflection on the
- 10:45meaning and uh veracity of the verses
- 10:48you're listening to. We began this video
- 10:51with
- 10:54the Quran also reminds us
- 10:59it also [snorts] reminds us in
- 11:04so again do we not recite the Quran with
- 11:07proper contemplation and reflection.
- 11:09Certainly in the remembrance of Allah do
- 11:11our hearts find tranquility. Number
- 11:14three we should all be trying to
- 11:16properly learn how to recite the Quran.
- 11:19The more effort we make, the more reward
- 11:21we get. If somebody is not an Arabic
- 11:23native speaker, we know the well-known
- 11:24hadith that that person gets extra
- 11:25reward from Allah. So we should try to
- 11:28properly enunciate the words. We should
- 11:30properly try to incorporate the mad
- 11:33lazim, the shdas, all of the little
- 11:35details of the rules of recitation. We
- 11:38should use the proper breathing
- 11:39techniques and recite slowly. Breathe in
- 11:41between verses. So this is another uh
- 11:44key implication. Number four, we want to
- 11:47recite with what we call deep diaphragm
- 11:49breathing or abdominal breathing. This
- 11:52means to take the proper pauses uh
- 11:54between verses uh pauses between words
- 11:58when a called for. So again, this will
- 12:00help us to maximize the benefits with
- 12:02respect to anxiety and mental health as
- 12:04well. Fifth and not certainly not the
- 12:06least point, but we want to mention that
- 12:08we should recite with repetition. Recite
- 12:11Quran if we can daily. Is meant to be
- 12:14recited frequently. Allah reminds us in
- 12:16the Quran to doikar frequently and
- 12:18abundantly
- 12:22mentioned in surah. So when we do this
- 12:25then we're going to get the maximum
- 12:26benefits as well. If we look at a lot of
- 12:28the medical studies done on vag nerve
- 12:30stimulation they say you need to follow
- 12:31these techniques for at least 30 minutes
- 12:33to an hour to get the full benefits. So
- 12:36again when we repeat the verses of the
- 12:38Quran and we do even when we do
- 12:41repetition or w of the name of Allah
- 12:43this will have even more benefit. Think
- 12:46about it if we stop and pause and think
- 12:47about the word Allah in the middle of
- 12:49Allah we know there is a sha which
- 12:51generates a vibration Allah at the end
- 12:55of Allah there's also a breath or the
- 12:57little sound. So Allah,
- 13:01so even when you do ofahillah,
- 13:04we know the well-known hadithahillahill.
- 13:08So the best of or the best of
- 13:10remembrances of Allah is to sayahillah.
- 13:13So even within this and with the
- 13:15repetition of the name of Allah, there's
- 13:17the sha and there's the h the and the
- 13:20breathing associated with it. So
- 13:21[snorts] again, these are all things we
- 13:23really need to think about, brothers and
- 13:25sisters. And I I hope and I pray that
- 13:27Allah gives us the ability to benefit
- 13:29from recitation of the Quran and the
- 13:30frequent remembrance of Allah. May Allah
- 13:32give all of us the best of holistic
- 13:34health.
