  1. 0:00BC has been a quiet leader for decades
  2. 0:02in the quantum space. The global quantum
  3. 0:04industry was born here in British
  4. 0:06Columbia.
  5. 0:07>> Hi, I'm Lisa Lambert. I'm the CEO of
  6. 0:09Quantum Industry Canada or QIC for
  7. 0:11short. And BC has long been doing
  8. 0:14research in the sector and it was
  9. 0:15actually the global quantum industry
  10. 0:17that was born here in British Columbia.
  11. 0:20>> For folks who don't know, what is
  12. 0:21quantum technology?
  13. 0:23>> Quantum technology uses the strange
  14. 0:25rules of physics at the scale of the
  15. 0:27very small to do things that the tech
  16. 0:29that we have today simply can't do. This
  17. 0:32is so much more than just computing. It
  18. 0:34includes ultra-precise sensing. It
  19. 0:36includes ultra-secure communications and
  20. 0:39new ways of processing information. You
  21. 0:42can kind of think of it as a new
  22. 0:43foundation layer for how we measure, how
  23. 0:45we move, and how we process information.
  24. 0:48>> So, what kinds of real-world problems
  25. 0:51could quantum technologies be used to
  26. 0:53help solve? Quantum will underpin
  27. 0:55security, infrastructure, entire
  28. 0:57industries. And if BC builds and scales
  29. 1:00here, it's not just participating in
  30. 1:02this new frontier. It's ultimately
  31. 1:04setting the terms for the next
  32. 1:05generation of the economy. So, it's ours
  33. 1:08to grasp right now and it's BC's
  34. 1:10opportunity to build and help shape and
  35. 1:12define what's on the frontier.
  36. 1:14>> What sorts of roles and positions are
  37. 1:16going to be actually needed as this
  38. 1:18industry grows?
  39. 1:19>> You go take a look. There's jobs across
  40. 1:21the board with this and you don't uh
  41. 1:23need a PhD necessarily to be working in
  42. 1:25quantum. Though, if you have one and
  43. 1:26you're you're focused in that space,
  44. 1:28there's certainly an opportunity for you
  45. 1:29as well. But, there's companies hiring
  46. 1:31right now um physicists, engineers, but
  47. 1:34also software developers. They're
  48. 1:35looking for people on their go-to-market
  49. 1:37teams, on their business teams, human
  50. 1:39resources, technicians, and just really
  51. 1:41people who um who can bridge worlds
  52. 1:44together and are really excited about
  53. 1:46building the future.
  54. 1:47>> So, looking to the future, what
  55. 1:48breakthroughs or milestones are you most
  56. 1:51excited to see within quantum
  57. 1:52technology?
  58. 1:53>> I think one of the most exciting things
  59. 1:54right now that we're on the precipice of
  60. 1:56is with quantum really playing with the
  61. 1:58real world. Technologies are moving from
  62. 2:00the lab into the market and they're
  63. 2:02moving to the hands of people who are
  64. 2:03actually going to take these and shape
  65. 2:05them and be able to look at them from a
  66. 2:06very different way than say a quantum
  67. 2:08physicist does and they'll be able to
  68. 2:10see new possibilities with it. Just as
  69. 2:12when the internet came out, it was
  70. 2:13exciting to have the internet but was
  71. 2:15what was so exciting was seeing what
  72. 2:16people ultimately did with that and
  73. 2:18seeing their imaginations run wild and
  74. 2:21that's what I'm most excited about in
  75. 2:22the next 5 to 10 years because we'll be
  76. 2:24seeing that across all of quantum
  77. 2:26technologies.
