  1. 0:00To be, or not to be?
  2. 0:02sustainable.
  3. 0:02Each day
  4. 0:03there are more and more news and articles that warn us about how damaged is our planet
  5. 0:07and tell us about how we ought to act soon
  6. 0:09And surely enough,
  7. 0:10we all know it's necessary
  8. 0:11but sometimes, we can't just find enough motivation to leave our comfort zone.
  9. 0:16Or we just don't have either the money nor the time to go eco-friendly.
  10. 0:19But that's precisely the problem. We tend to think that taking care of our planet requires large amounts of money
  11. 0:24or to giving up on a lot of of our privileges.
  12. 0:26And this is when this elegant word comes in:
  13. 0:30SUS-TAIN-A-BI-LI-TY
  14. 0:31Hmmm...
  15. 0:31To put it simply,
  16. 0:33Sustainability is kind of like a scale
  17. 0:35in which on one side
  18. 0:36we have Mr. Environment
  19. 0:37and on the other side, we have Mr. Money and Ms. Society.
  20. 0:41Our friend, sustainability's job is to keep these three important people in balance.
  21. 0:46With the ultimate goal of keeping them safe for future generations so they can enjoy them as much as we do.
  22. 0:52Now, if we went all-in eco-friendly and banned the "evil and murderer" fishermen
  23. 0:57keep on damaging our poor ecosystems,
  24. 0:59Mr. Environment would be super happy to see his oceans brimming with life again.
  25. 1:04On the other hand, Mr. Money and Ms. Society wouldn't be so happy when they find out
  26. 1:08that people went unemployed, broke and ended up with no food.
  27. 1:11Now, if we wanted to please them,
  28. 1:13we could give them more boats and licenses to fish whenever and wherever they wanted to.
  29. 1:16This way, Mexico (or whatever other country) would become the world's largest fish exporter.
  30. 1:20Only that this time, It'd be Mr. Environment, the one to be saddened, when he found out
  31. 1:22that his fish friends were now all gone and took with them many other animals.
  32. 1:29This is when our trusty old friend, sustainability, comes up with a plan...
  33. 1:33Let the fishermen do their job
  34. 1:35making sure that they do it in area, seasons and quantities
  35. 1:38that keep the marine species safe.
  36. 1:41This way, everyone who earn a living from fishing, would still have an outcome source
  37. 1:46and our diversity and environmental stability wouldn't be compromised.
  38. 1:49But sustainability is not just all about politicians or fishermen.
  39. 1:52And it's precisely our friend sustainability that proposes some interesting solutions
  40. 1:57to take care of our environment while keeping our wallets safe.
  41. 2:00I mean, if your and your children's life isn't reason enough...
  42. 2:04Here are some other reasons that may catch your attention
  43. 2:07Share a ride!
  44. 2:08I know, I know... You've heard this a million times. But listen.
  45. 2:12If you shared your car daily with someone for a year,
  46. 2:15You wouldn't only emit 1680 CO2 kg (3,700 lbs). (That's a full-grown hippo!)
  47. 2:19But you'd also save yourself around $630 (US dollars)
  48. 2:22That's enough to enjoy a whole week in an all inclusive resort in Los Cabos.
  49. 2:27Even better... if you decided to ride a bike on your way to work or school (4 km or 2.5 miles approx.)
  50. 2:30You'd lower your CO2 emissions in about 269 kg per year (or about 593 lbs),
  51. 2:36you'd save yourself quite a bit,
  52. 2:38burn 54,331 kcal (around 129 burgers)
  53. 2:42aaand, you get show show off your toned legs when the year ends. ;)
  54. 2:47*clears his throat in spanish*
  55. 2:48If you were to put a solar panel at your house,
  56. 2:50assuming you don't live in Antartica,
  57. 2:53by the time the panel has already payed for itself
  58. 2:55you'd save around $450 US dollars yearly for the remaining life of the panel (calculations done with Mexican rates).
  59. 3:01As you can see, being sustainable isn't just good for the planet,
  60. 3:04but also for you, your wallet, and everybody else
  61. 3:06do you still ask yourself, why being sustainable?
  62. 3:09And if you are one of those who think that one single person won't make a change...
  63. 3:12Keep in mind what Eduardo Galeano famously said:
  64. 3:14A lot of small people, in small places, doing small things,
  65. 3:17can change the world.
  66. 3:19Comment: Pepperoni Pizza if you are reading this :)
