2. 0:07be willing to go a long way to get it.
3. 0:10But would you go all the way around the
4. 0:12world?
5. 0:18In Ferdinand Muelan's day, people in
6. 0:20Europe wanted spices from far away
7. 0:23countries. So in the year 1519 he set
8. 0:26out on an expedition from Spain with
9. 0:29five ships.
10. 0:36He was looking for a route to the Spice
11. 0:38Islands, now called the Malucu Islands.
12. 0:47In 1519, the spices produced there were
13. 0:51worth more than gold.
14. 0:56Spain's neighbor and rival Portugal
15. 0:58controlled a more direct eastward route,
16. 1:01so Miguelan thought he'd head west.
17. 1:07At the time, much of the world was still
18. 1:09unexplored, though some maps showed the
19. 1:12coast of Brazil and some Caribbean
20. 1:14islands.
21. 1:19Miguelan believed there was a route
22. 1:21through the Americas, not far from where
23. 1:23the existing maps stopped.
24. 1:26He thought the Spice Islands were not
25. 1:28far beyond, so he could return the way
26. 1:31he came.
27. 1:33After three difficult months, he neared
28. 1:36the coast of South America and headed
29. 1:38south. But the route was not where he
30. 1:41expected it to be.
31. 1:44Months later, his sick and hungry men
32. 1:46followed the passage now known as the
33. 1:48Straight of Muelan to a peaceful ocean
34. 1:51and named it the Pacific.
35. 1:54He'd found his route through South
36. 1:56America and was sure that the Spice
37. 1:58Islands weren't far away.
38. 2:05But he was wrong again.
39. 2:09Day after day, Miguelan and his crew
40. 2:12sailed across empty seas.
41. 2:16After five long months, they reached the
42. 2:19Philippine Islands,
43. 2:21where Miguelan was killed in a battle
44. 2:23with the native people. With most of his
45. 2:26ships abandoned or captured, Miguelan's
46. 2:28voyage was almost a total failure. But
47. 2:32after 3 years, a single ship, the
48. 2:34Victoria, made it back to Spain.
49. 2:42As the first ship to make the journey
50. 2:44all the way around the earth called a
51. 2:47circumnavigation,
52. 2:48the Victoria clearly demonstrated that
53. 2:51the world is round.
54. 3:00The crew had explored the coast of South
55. 3:02America and found the straight of Melan
56. 3:06and brought back a ship full of the most
57. 3:08valuable food in the world, spices.
