- 0:00This day had started a little
- 0:02differently. After a long holiday,
- 0:04three of us friends decided to go on a
- 0:07trip. We'd get off at an unknown
- 0:09station. Some would stay at home near
- 0:12the same station and return the next
- 0:13day. This kind of excitement is quite
- 0:17common at this age. Today, as I sit
- 0:20down to write this story, I'm reminded
- 0:23of how terrifying that night was. We
- 0:27bought our tickets and boarded a train
- 0:30to Purulia. Three hours later, the
- 0:33scenery around us slowly began to
- 0:36change. It seemed as if a storm was
- 0:41about to hit. Fields and barns were all
- 0:45around, and the train was moving in the
- 0:47middle. Rain could fall at any moment.
- 0:51We looked around the train cabin. There
- 0:55weren't many passengers. Whoever was
- 0:58there would get off at the last station
- 1:01. Suddenly, Subhendu appeared with his
- 1:04bag. "What's wrong? It's raining. Let's
- 1:10get off here." I'm not the kind of
- 1:13person to be afraid of this rain while
- 1:14embarking on an adventure. Or any of us
- 1:17were. After getting off at Kusumpur
- 1:23station, no one was in sight. A little
- 1:27distance away, a lantern was burning at
- 1:29a shop. We went there and saw a tea
- 1:32stall. An elderly man was sitting there
- 1:35, resting. "Brother, can we find a
- 1:39place to stay here for the night?"
- 1:41Perhaps he couldn't hear us. Mrinal
- 1:45thought he was deaf. He shouted, "
- 1:50Brother, can we find a place to stay
- 1:53for the night?"
- 1:56The man looked at a field without
- 1:58telling us. We all turned in that
- 2:01direction. In the middle of the field,
- 2:03there was something resembling a huge
- 2:05palace. We couldn't make out anything
- 2:08in the darkness. It was about to rain.
- 2:15The three of us ran through the field.
- 2:18As soon as we reached the middle of the
- 2:20field, it started raining heavily. The
- 2:22clouds seemed to be sitting there just
- 2:26to drench us. No matter how hard we
- 2:31tried, the rain drenched us completely.
- 2:36The weather had been extremely humid
- 2:37since morning. The rain, coupled with
- 2:41the strong winds, swayed the trees. The
- 2:45palace that had been visible, is still
- 2:47not clearly visible. Turning back, we
- 2:50couldn't even see the station or the
- 2:53tea stall. A fog hung all around. We
- 2:58were standing in the middle of the
- 3:00field. "What time is it?" I replied. "
- 3:06It's 3:30." Looking around, it seemed
- 3:09like night had fallen. We slowly moved
- 3:13forward towards the palace. The gate
- 3:18was broken, so getting inside wasn't
- 3:20difficult. Judging by the two statues
- 3:25outside, it seemed like a landlord's
- 3:27house. There was a forest all around.
- 3:34There was a huge fountain in the
- 3:37courtyard, and in the middle of it, a
- 3:40broken statue of a girl. It seemed like
- 3:44no one lived in this house. Who said
- 3:48that? This house doesn't have people
- 3:52living there. This palace has served so
- 3:57many people, and you're just three of
- 4:00us. Suddenly, a man came out and
- 4:05started saying all this. All three of
- 4:09us were shocked. Where did he come from
- 4:12in this darkness? None of us understood
- 4:15. I clearly saw that none of the doors
- 4:20of the house were open. We were shocked
- 4:24. Seeing this, the man laughed a little
- 4:28and said, "So many people like you come
- 4:31here. Some come by accident, some come
- 4:36for their own pleasure. The door to our
- 4:41palace is always open for everyone." We
- 4:50noticed the man holding a lantern. It
- 4:55hasn't been long, but this weather has
- 4:58made everything dark. And now, there
- 5:02are occasional flashes of lightning. In
- 5:08that light, the surroundings became
- 5:10clear. It seems as if no one has lived
- 5:15here for a long time. Come, the two
- 5:20upstairs houses are clean and tidy. See
- 5:26which one you'd like to stay in. Wash
- 5:32your hands and feet. I'll send food. "
- 5:36The three of us exchanged glances. The
- 5:43man started toward the stairs. I
- 5:47stopped Mrinal and asked," How did that
- 5:49man know we were staying here today,
- 5:52and noticed something? What's the
- 5:56matter? The door wasn't open, but where
- 5:59did that man come from? "Subhendu and
- 6:02the man had moved a little further.
- 6:05Mrinal and I stood there, chatting.
- 6:09Shubhendu said," What are you doing
- 6:12standing there? Come upstairs. You go,
- 6:15we're coming. "We hadn't really noticed
- 6:20. It was a bit dark because we didn't
- 6:25have a lantern. Something crawled over
- 6:30Minal's feet.
- 6:34Oh my god!
- 6:35Seeing this, the man from the upper
- 6:38floor called out," Snakes have come out
- 6:40in the rain. Don't be afraid. They're
- 6:46not poisonous. "We quickly climbed up.
- 6:51There were two large houses in front,
- 6:54each with two large beds. A chandelier
- 6:58hung from the ceiling. An expensive
- 7:01wardrobe with a mirror. In the corner
- 7:05of the house was a table and chair made
- 7:07of stone. We went inside and sat down,
- 7:11the three of us. The man slowly left.
- 7:21We felt a little uneasy. It all felt
- 7:26like a dream. As if someone knew we'd
- 7:31be there, but we ourselves hadn't known
- 7:35we'd be there. A little while later, I
- 7:40heard footsteps and looked out the
- 7:43window. Three women were coming behind
- 7:47that man, chatting. It was hard to
- 7:50believe there were so many people in
- 7:52this mansion. As soon as they entered,
- 7:55we saw them carrying food and water.
- 7:59They left, leaving. The sound of their
- 8:03anklets echoed throughout the mansion.
- 8:06The man began," Please
- 8:08eat this food. "I said, confused." Wait
- 8:16, you knew we'd be here. "The man
- 8:20replied calmly," Someone comes every
- 8:25day. That's why, by the landlord's
- 8:30order, we arrange food for guests. "
- 8:33Mrinal asked," There's a landlord in
- 8:37this mansion. Where is he? "The man
- 8:41didn't answer and was leaving. Just
- 8:44then, Suben said," You've cooked so
- 8:47much food for us. We don't have much
- 8:51money. We don't need it. "With that,
- 8:58the man closed the door and left.
- 9:02Despite our exhaustion, we were very
- 9:04hungry. The smell of the food only
- 9:07increased our hunger. We were
- 9:09astonished by the sight of the dishes.
- 9:13Subhendu was about to eat. I stopped
- 9:16him." So many people live in this house
- 9:19, "he said." It's hard to imagine. "The
- 9:23lantern's light was slowly fading. I
- 9:27was standing near the window. A very
- 9:29bright lightning flashed. I was
- 9:32startled by a sight. There were many
- 9:35rooms on the other side of the window.
- 9:38Someone was standing in each window.
- 9:41Taking a flashlight from my backpack
- 9:43and pointing it at the windows, my body
- 9:46went cold. I saw someone standing in
- 9:50each window, just like me. They were
- 9:56lying on the bed, having eaten biscuits
- 9:58and drank water from their bags. Seeing
- 10:02the flashlight in my hand, they asked,"
- 10:03What are you looking at? "" Hey, that
- 10:08man in the other window looks just like
- 10:13me. "" No, brother, look, he looks
- 10:17exactly like me. "Just then, a
- 10:24terrifying laugh rang out from the
- 10:26mansion. That terrifying laugh
- 10:35terrified us." We were caught in the
- 10:40clutches of some devil or ghost. "The
- 10:43occasional lightning strikes made the
- 10:46surroundings clear. All three of us ran
- 10:51for the door. But where is the door?
- 10:55There are only walls all around. Yes,
- 10:58we're trapped. There are no doors in
- 11:02any house. Mrinal cried," Oh, we came
- 11:06in through the door. Where did that
- 11:10door go? "The same laughter echoed
- 11:18again. My mind was at a loss. Shubhendu
- 11:22said," Brother, it seems we won't
- 11:25escape. "I was in a similar state.
- 11:28Still, I said," Don't be afraid. There
- 11:32must be a way out. Someone wants to
- 11:35keep us captive. "Yes, I went back to
- 11:38the window. Someone who looked like me
- 11:41was standing in the other window. As I
- 11:46looked toward the courtyard, I saw the
- 11:48man standing there. The three women
- 11:52beside him were all muttering something
- 11:54upstairs. Shubhendu and Mrinath
- 12:02searched for the door in the darkness,
- 12:06but they couldn't find it anywhere.
- 12:11Fear and exhaustion left us at a loss
- 12:14for words. Suddenly, a knock sounded.
- 12:19We were terrified. The sound was coming
- 12:24from under the bed. With the help of a
- 12:28flashlight, I saw a door under the bed.
- 12:31As soon as we moved it aside, a ladder
- 12:33appeared. I couldn't see who had broken
- 12:37it. We took our luggage and started
- 12:41descending the ladder. Slowly, we
- 12:50entered a cave-like tunnel. Slowly, the
- 12:55rain began falling on us. Then we
- 12:59realized the roof was open. We could
- 13:03see the sky above. A rope was swinging.
- 13:07We grabbed hold of that rope and
- 13:10climbed up. A man pulled us up. We were
- 13:15gasping for breath. We sat down in the
- 13:20field in the pouring rain. I asked,"
- 13:23What would have happened to us if you
- 13:25hadn't come? "I immediately saw that
- 13:28man's face." That man from the tea shop
- 13:34. "" What are you? "the man asked." Why
- 13:43did you come to this side of the field?
- 13:47How many times have you called out to
- 13:48me? I've been chasing you for ages. I
- 13:50followed you but couldn't catch you. I
- 13:55always thought you were in danger. We
- 13:59were stuck in that mansion. There's no
- 14:02mansion there. It was the landlord's
- 14:06decorated house. "His subjects were
- 14:09imprisoned there for their mistakes. A
- 14:14man and four women were always on guard
- 14:17. The prisoners died of hunger there.
- 14:24The landlord found solace in their
- 14:26screams. Later, the landlord's body was
- 14:34found in front of that same fountain.
- 14:40The man and woman mysteriously
- 14:43disappeared. They were nowhere to be
- 14:47found. No one has visited that house
- 14:52since. Until now, we were in the same
- 14:55devil's jungle. Some of the prisoners
- 14:58there had made that path to escape.
- 15:02When the landlord found out, he had it
- 15:06closed. The souls of many are
- 15:09imprisoned there. Even today, the sound
- 15:13of knocking can be heard. Hearing this
- 15:17frightened us all even more. Meaning
- 15:21that sound? The old man coughed and
- 15:25said," There's still a sound. I throw a
- 15:30rope every day, in case someone gets
- 15:33trapped like you. "A storm suddenly
- 15:38swept us away. Then, in the flash of
- 15:44lightning, we saw no one around us. Not
- 15:49even that man. I understood that man
- 15:58had also been killed by the landlord's
- 16:01atrocities. Arriving at the station, we
- 16:11didn't even notice the tea stall. A
- 16:13short while later, a train pulled up,
- 16:18and we boarded it. As we gazed at the
- 16:25mansion in the electric light from
- 16:29inside the train, we saw it beckoning
- 16:35those lost to it, drawing them in. If
