- 1:18further delay, let's straight away get
- 1:20right into the PTE summarize spoken
- 1:21text. How to handle shorter audios. Here
- 1:24we start. When we talk about PTE
- 1:26summarize spoken text, remember this
- 1:27module comes in the listening section.
- 1:29It is there for both PTE Academic and
- 1:31PTE Core with a small difference. Let's
- 1:33understand the task. They'll play an
- 1:35audio. They would have given you a
- 1:36booklet and a pen or you have the
- 1:38privilege of directly taking short notes
- 1:40by typing into the computer. Either of
- 1:41these options is totally fine. Once they
- 1:43play an audio, you can take down some
- 1:45notes and once the audio ends, inclusive
- 1:47of the audio, you will have 10 minutes
- 1:49to submit the response. For PTE
- 1:50Academic, you got to write between 50 to
- 1:5270 words. PTE Core is only between 20 to
- 1:5530 words. Should I rely on a template?
- 1:58If I'm relying on a template, what
- 1:59template gives me a better score? Let's
- 2:01understand that in detail. How long the
- 2:03audio usually last for? Usually 40 45 to
- 2:0650 seconds. But what if it turns out to
- 2:08be just 30 seconds? Let's understand
- 2:10very shortly how to deal with it. How
- 2:12many sentences should I write in my
- 2:13summarized spoken text so that I get
- 2:15better scores? We'll shortly understand
- 2:17each and every of your doubts with
- 2:19respect to our summarized spoken text.
- 2:20I'm going to give you two demos. One
- 2:22audio with just 30 28 to 30 seconds and
- 2:26we will see how I will you know, type
- 2:27the answers, how I respond to the
- 2:29answers by my fast note-taking skill.
- 2:32Then again, the second audio will be
- 2:34around 40 to 42 seconds. So I'll do the
- 2:36demonstration through our portal skills
- 2:37pte.macquarie.com live demonstration for
- 2:39both the questions. Make sure you watch
- 2:41the video till the end to make most from
- 2:43the video. Before we delve into the
- 2:45demonstration, let's understand how
- 2:47you're evaluated with respect to
- 2:48summarized spoken text. For PTE
- 2:49Academic, grammar will be for two marks,
- 2:52form will be for two marks, vocabulary
- 2:54two marks, spelling two marks, and
- 2:55content four marks. That makes it 12
- 2:58marks. But for PTE Core, content is two
- 3:00marks, which makes it approximately 10
- 3:02marks. Doesn't matter PTE Core or PTE
- 3:04Academic, this module is very very
- 3:06important, contributes a lot of marks
- 3:08towards your listening and writing. So
- 3:10whether you're sitting for PTE Core or
- 3:12PTE Academic, you have to do it
- 3:13precisely and it's definitely possible.
- 3:16All right, I've just opened the portal
- 3:17on the left-hand side. Right-hand side
- 3:19I've got some space to type. I'm opening
- 3:21this question called "Sloths". Just
- 3:23observe how I take down the notes. I
- 3:25probably would listen for 3 to 4 seconds
- 3:27and then decide what to write and then I
- 3:29start typing for the next probably 5 to
- 3:316 seconds. The audio being very short,
- 3:33well in advance you would not know if
- 3:35the audio is going to be a shorter one
- 3:37or a longer one, but you got to be so
- 3:40quick. Max of 1 minute, not more than
- 3:42that. Average is 45 seconds, 50 seconds.
- 3:45Sometimes 30-second audio will come.
- 3:47Definitely it will come. It has come for
- 3:49so many people. Just observe. I will
- 3:51explain you. I will show you the
- 3:53demonstration what templates to use, how
- 3:55to write the exact summary so that we
- 3:58get better marks for the content.
- 3:59Content is four. So let's start with
- 4:01this slots.
- 4:09>> Sloths may be slow, but they've got a
- 4:11hidden flex. They can hold their breath
- 4:13for up to 40 minutes
- 4:14>> They've got a hidden
- 4:15>> That's longer than a dolphin, which
- 4:17usually taps [snorts] out around
- 4:18>> That's longer than a dolphin.
- 4:20>> This is thanks to their ability to slow
- 4:22their heart rate 1/3 of its normal
- 4:24speed.
- 4:25>> ability
- 4:26>> swim often, but when they do, they float
- 4:28like furry little zen masters.
- 4:30>> Float like zen masters.
- 4:31>> while dolphins do flips and tricks,
- 4:33sloths are just vibing in stealth mode,
- 4:35taking deep meditative dives like it's
- 4:37nothing.
- 4:37>> Taking deep meditative
- 4:40state like nothing.
- 4:45Well, I've written very short phrases
- 4:47because it's just a 30-second audio.
- 4:49What max can one go?
- 4:51Correct, this is what I've taken exactly
- 4:53as it is. Um sloths may be slow, but
- 4:56they have got a hidden flex.
- 4:58Sloths may be slow, but they have got a
- 5:02hidden flex. 11 words. That's longer
- 5:05than a dolphin. Four words. This is
- 5:10taking or talking, I'm not sure what
- 5:13I've written. We will see what to write.
- 5:15And then when they When do they When
- 5:17they do, they float like zen masters,
- 5:20taking deep meditative state like
- 5:22nothing. These are the whole sentences
- 5:24that I'm going to write, so let's see
- 5:25how much of it can I cover by writing
- 5:28around 50 to 70 words. By the way, I
- 5:30have taken the demonstration for PT
- 5:31Academic.
- 5:32>> [snorts]
- 5:33>> Sloths
- 5:36may be slow, but they have
- 5:40gotten a
- 5:44hidden flex, first sentence.
- 5:49That's longer
- 5:52than what a
- 5:56We have to fix the grammar a little bit
- 5:57here and there.
- 5:59What a dolphin can hold because the
- 6:01second sentence they told, it can hold
- 6:04breath for almost some seconds. That's
- 6:06longer than what a dolphin can hold.
- 6:09This is
- 6:12talking about
- 6:15their
- 6:17ability.
- 6:21And when they do,
- 6:24they
- 6:25float like
- 6:28Zen masters
- 6:30taking deep
- 6:33meditative state like
- 6:37nothing. 40 words I've written. We're
- 6:40almost out of this 40, probably 37 to 38
- 6:43words, or 35 to 36 words are exactly
- 6:45present in the audio. Content most
- 6:47probably I should be getting full
- 6:48scores. Though I've missed few words,
- 6:50it's okay. Few keywords, it's okay.
- 6:52Everything you cannot take.
- 6:54But I've tried my best to take whatever
- 6:56the best that I can. The strategy that I
- 6:58followed was listen to the audio for 3
- 7:01to 4 seconds and then start typing. When
- 7:03I was typing, I was not listening. I
- 7:04finished typing, then I again open my
- 7:06ears. I listen to the audio. I did it so
- 7:08fast because the audio lasted only for
- 7:1030 seconds. So four small phrases that
- 7:12I've taken. 40 words, this will give me
- 7:14zero. I'll have to add a template.
- 7:16Template now template's come into
- 7:18picture. Template's job is to just help
- 7:21you cross 50 words. They don't
- 7:23contribute to your content scores.
- 7:26Always remember this. I think I used
- 7:28this template, so I got 90. Whether you
- 7:30use it or not, you would have anyhow got
- 7:32a 90 because of your skill set. It's not
- 7:34the template. Let's not spread wrong
- 7:36information. All right. So the
- 7:40talk was about
- 7:42sloths.
- 7:44Firstly,
- 7:50firstly F has to be capitalized.
- 7:56The speaker said that
- 7:59the sloths may be slow,
- 8:03but they've got an hidden flex. I think
- 8:0551 words. Now don't think if I write 65
- 8:08words by adding more of template, I'll
- 8:09get more marks. You won't get more
- 8:11marks. Templates
- 8:13idea is just to aid you to cross 50
- 8:17words and I crossed it. After this,
- 8:18whether you use template or not, it is
- 8:21secondary. It's not going to make much
- 8:22difference towards your scores. Remember
- 8:24this.
- 8:25Uh that's longer than what a dolphin can
- 8:27hold. This is talking about their
- 8:29ability and when they do, they float
- 8:31like Zen masters taking deep meditative
- 8:33state like nothing. And um I think
- 8:37that's it. Let's submit it and see how
- 8:39much marks do I get. It will
- 8:40approximately take 6 to 8 seconds. We're
- 8:42running a lot of things in the
- 8:44background. Well, I've got 11.7 out of
- 8:4712. Uh it says meditative state taking a
- 8:50deep or
- 8:51deep taking deep meditative states like
- 8:54nothing. Apart from that, I don't see
- 8:55any of the issues. Vocabulary, it's
- 8:57fine. Uh content, it's four out of four,
- 9:00exceptional. And grammar, 1.8 because of
- 9:02one small mistake.
- 9:03That wouldn't be a problem. So, the idea
- 9:05is even for smaller audios. Something
- 9:08like this, you take some small phrases
- 9:10exactly matching. The more keywords you
- 9:12match, more marks you get. Well, there
- 9:14could be different techniques like you
- 9:16note down some keywords alone, for
- 9:18instance. Something like this, slow
- 9:21hidden flex
- 9:22longer than
- 9:28dolphin
- 9:29>> [snorts]
- 9:30>> Zen masters
- 9:32meditative state.
- 9:35Some people write like this. Well, this
- 9:37works. It's not about whether this works
- 9:38or not. It's all about when you take
- 9:42down just keywords like this, you should
- 9:44be able to
- 9:46make sentences using this that convey
- 9:48the same meaning as that of the audio.
- 9:52Now, people will write slow and hidden
- 9:54flex are the important features of lion.
- 9:57Then how the marks will come?
- 9:59Correct? So, as long as you have a
- 10:01better hold on the English language,
- 10:03listening skills are really great. You
- 10:05listen to the audio, you understand the
- 10:07story. So, you wrote only keywords. Then
- 10:09you can cook up a story because the same
- 10:11story that you listened, you would be
- 10:13writing. You would not be writing
- 10:14something else. Using these keywords,
- 10:16you get the marks.
- 10:17But, if you are someone who's not good
- 10:19at listening skills and took down the
- 10:21notes something like this and you try to
- 10:23write on your own, you completely change
- 10:25the meaning from that of the audio.
- 10:27Then, the marks will go down. Whatever
- 10:29the strategy that I showed, 100% works
- 10:32if you get that. It's not that easy. You
- 10:33got to type or you got to write down a
- 10:35bit faster, but with time you going to
- 10:38get this. All right, I said I'll be
- 10:40taking up two questions. I'll probably
- 10:42take up mantis.
- 10:44So, we'll see how I do this.
- 10:48Same method. Probably audio will last
- 10:50for 40 or seconds.
- 10:52>> The mantis shrimp isn't just a colorful
- 10:53sea creature.
- 10:54>> It's a full-blown colorful sea creature.
- 10:58>> that moves faster than a bullet, it can
- 11:00punch its prey so fast that it causes
- 11:02water to boil,
- 11:03creating a shockwave.
- 11:04>> Faster than a bullet. I'm not listening.
- 11:06>> It stuns or kills on contact. This punch
- 11:09is so powerful, it's been known to crack
- 11:11aquarium glass.
- 11:13Scientists study the mantis shrimp's
- 11:15club-like limbs for ideas on creating
- 11:17impact-resistant armor and high-speed
- 11:19robotics. Oh,
- 11:21and fun fact, it also has the most
- 11:23complex eyes in the animal kingdom.
- 11:25>> Fun fact, it has the most complex eyes
- 11:28in the I'm not listening.
- 11:31>> Basically, it's a deadly rainbow tank
- 11:33with fists.
- 11:34>> It's a deadly
- 11:37rainbow
- 11:39tank with
- 11:42fists.
- 11:45Mantis shrimp isn't just a colorful sea
- 11:47creature with a strike that moves faster
- 11:49than a bullet, second phrase. It stuns
- 11:51or kills whoever comes in contact and it
- 11:54can also crack aquarium glass, third
- 11:55phrase. It is also used in high-speed
- 11:57robotics and the fun fact, it has the
- 11:59most complex eyes in the animal kingdom
- 12:01and it's also a deadly rainbow tank with
- 12:02fists. It's so many sentences. 100% have
- 12:05to get content from.
- 12:07If you also write like this or let's say
- 12:10you You these two, still you should be
- 12:12able to get if not for at least three.
- 12:14But try to write as much as possible
- 12:16exactly as it is. If you write down
- 12:17exactly as it is, you don't have to
- 12:19worry about the grammar.
- 12:21Grammar gets messed up only when you are
- 12:25writing on your own. If you're copying
- 12:26the exact sentences from the audio, you
- 12:30don't have to worry about the grammar,
- 12:31isn't it? So let's start with this.
- 12:34>> [snorts]
- 12:35>> Mantis shrimp, we'll quickly finish this
- 12:37off in the next 3 to 4 minutes.
- 12:40Mantis
- 12:42shrimp is
- 12:45isn't just
- 12:52colorful sea
- 12:55creature
- 13:00with a strike that
- 13:02moves
- 13:04faster than a bullet.
- 13:08It
- 13:10stuns
- 13:11or kills
- 13:13whoever
- 13:14>> [snorts]
- 13:15>> comes in contact
- 13:18and
- 13:20it can also crack
- 13:23>> [snorts]
- 13:24>> aquarium
- 13:25aquarium
- 13:27glass.
- 13:29It is used in I'm just adding few words,
- 13:32otherwise grammatically it would be
- 13:34wrong. It is used in high speed
- 13:38robotics.
- 13:40And the fun fact,
- 13:43it has the most
- 13:46complex eyes in the
- 13:50animal kingdom. 50 words, 53 words.
- 13:55It's a deadly
- 13:59rainbow
- 14:02tank with
- 14:04fists. 60 words. Well, if you write 70
- 14:07words, it does not mean that you have to
- 14:08get content four.
- 14:10Content is all about how many keywords
- 14:13or how many of the key content you're
- 14:14matching,
- 14:16uh, which is present in the audio.
- 14:18You may write 70 words, but none of it
- 14:20is matching, then your marks will go
- 14:21down.
- 14:22Like in the previous question, I took
- 14:25only 51 to 52 words. I got four out of
- 14:27four for the content. So, come out of
- 14:28this assumption that if I write more, I
- 14:30get more marks. It may not be true. You
- 14:32write apt, you get good scores.
- 14:34So, now 60 words, no need of a template.
- 14:37Absolutely not needed. Let's revise and
- 14:40check any spelling or grammatical
- 14:42mistakes present. Mantis shrimp is and
- 14:45just a colorful sea creature with a
- 14:48strike that moves faster than a bullet.
- 14:50It stuns or kills whoever comes
- 14:52>> [snorts]
- 14:52>> in contact, and it can also crack
- 14:54aquarium glass. It is used in high-speed
- 14:55robotics. And the fun fact, it has the
- 14:58most complex eyes in the animal kingdom.
- 15:00It's a deadly rainbow tank with fists. I
- 15:02submitted it. I have to get it. Most
- 15:04probably I'll get it.
- 15:08Let's see. It hardly takes 6 to 8
- 15:09seconds. Grammar has gone. High-speed
- 15:11probably needs a hyphen over here.
- 15:13That's the reason.
- 15:15>> [snorts]
- 15:15>> And the fun fact is one word probably.
- 15:17And the fun fact is you can ignore this
- 15:20because here as well, and the fun fact,
- 15:22question mark. So, a few things, it's
- 15:24fine. I mean, every AI is different. We
- 15:26have tried our best to make our AI come
- 15:29closer to what, um,
- 15:31Pearson AI does. Because everyone's AI
- 15:33is different. We don't have their
- 15:35software. They don't have our software.
- 15:37Correct? We have tried our best to get
- 15:39as close as 95%
- 15:42and above. And definitely yes, it is
- 15:44currently similar to,
- 15:46uh, Pearson AI scoring, at least by 95%
- 15:50and above that I can guarantee you. 100%
- 15:52is not possible because we don't know
- 15:54their code. We don't know what they're
- 15:55using. It's all about taking exam
- 15:57multiple times, understanding what
- 16:00students have gone through based on the
- 16:02results, based on their performances. We
- 16:03have built this. A 95% accuracy is an
- 16:08exceptional one in the standard that we
- 16:11have in the current market. So, coming
- 16:13back to this, this is the way you handle
- 16:15shorter audios, audios that do not last
- 16:17for even 50 seconds, 30, 35, 40. Even if
- 16:20you have taken less number of
- 16:22uh sentences or phrases, it's okay. Add
- 16:24some template, some random generic
- 16:26templates. Don't add a lengthy ones. The
- 16:28talk was about Firstly, the speaker said
- 16:29Here, the speaker explained. Something
- 16:31of this you can add just to ensure it
- 16:33crosses 50 words. So, that form you get
- 16:36two marks. If you don't even cross 50
- 16:38words, that form two marks also gone,
- 16:39guys. Remember this. I think that's all
- 16:41for today. I really, really hope this
- 16:44demonstration has helped you understand
- 16:46more about how to handle the shorter
- 16:48audio format for your summarize spoken
- 16:50text, which will in turn help you get
- 16:52better scores towards your writing and
- 16:54listening. Found the video useful? Share
