  1. 0:01this morning is psychic medium john
  2. 0:03edward and we are packed to the rafters
  3. 0:06thanks to you you can pull a crowd
  4. 0:08you really can um all of these people
  5. 0:10would love to be read by you john so i
  6. 0:12guess we're in your hands okay
  7. 0:14self-proclaimed medium john edward is
  8. 0:16speaking to a woman whose son is
  9. 0:18deceased john's job is to pretend to
  10. 0:21know details about the deceased and his
  11. 0:24or her relatives details that he
  12. 0:26couldn't have known without his
  13. 0:27extraordinary talent
  14. 0:31there are specific tactics in the way
  15. 0:33so-called mediums operate
  16. 0:35this video will identify some of them is
  17. 0:38there a wild world his daughter's oldest
  18. 0:41daughter is lauren lauren this is
  19. 0:43probably the most common tactic provide
  20. 0:46a frame and let the relative fill it
  21. 0:49john wasn't able to guess the name but
  22. 0:51the relative's content with the fact
  23. 0:53that he started with the correct initial
  24. 0:55letter she says lauren as if it's close
  25. 0:57to lyle
  26. 0:59being able to guess a first name
  27. 1:01starting with l is unimpressive if it
  28. 1:04hadn't been the son's daughter the
  29. 1:06relative could have mentioned other
  30. 1:07people she knows whose first or last
  31. 1:10name starts with an ill
  32. 1:12they were going to do kokoda track
  33. 1:14together and she's still doing it this
  34. 1:16year in memory of him for beyond blue
  35. 1:19would he be 50
  36. 1:22he would have been 49
  37. 1:24he would
  38. 1:26he's telling me to talk about turning
  39. 1:2750.
  40. 1:29this year he would turn 50.
  41. 1:32obviously john's scarce about the sun's
  42. 1:34age is based on an assessment of the
  43. 1:37relative's age so this could be a
  44. 1:39compliment or criticism
  45. 1:41he starts with a dichotomy question
  46. 1:43which conveniently allows for
  47. 1:45disagreement would he be 50 so if the
  48. 1:47relative had disagreed he wouldn't have
  49. 1:49been in trouble because he wouldn't have
  50. 1:51claimed anything he didn't ask a
  51. 1:53presupposition question like how would
  52. 1:55you have celebrated his 50th birthday in
  53. 1:58december because he only knows what the
  54. 2:01relative shares
  55. 2:02when the relative confirms he shifts
  56. 2:04from dichotomy questions to sounding
  57. 2:06assertive all of a sudden he's telling
  58. 2:08me to talk about turning 50. mediums use
  59. 2:11equivocating language until the
  60. 2:13acknowledgements of the relatives allow
  61. 2:15them to use assertive language
  62. 2:18he's making me feel like you're going to
  63. 2:20celebrate his 50th birthday
  64. 2:25even when stating something obvious a
  65. 2:27mother celebrating her son's birthday he
  66. 2:30makes sure to cover himself with hitches
  67. 2:33expressing uncertainty rather than
  68. 2:35certainty he says he's making me feel
  69. 2:37like which is subjective hitches express
  70. 2:39equivocation and equivocation makes it
  71. 2:42possible for the medium to retract their
  72. 2:44statements at a later point
  73. 2:46next it's important for mediums to say
  74. 2:48something funny to make the audience
  75. 2:50like them better when we like someone
  76. 2:53we're more inclined to believe what they
  77. 2:55say self-proclaimed mediums are
  78. 2:57entertainers in the same way as
  79. 2:59magicians their goals are the same to
  80. 3:02deceive people for money and fame but
  81. 3:04two things differentiate them magicians
  82. 3:07are far more sophisticated and
  83. 3:09intelligent and magicians are honest
  84. 3:12about their intentions
  85. 3:13are you normally not somebody who uses
  86. 3:15curse words
  87. 3:19i mean like i'm supposed to say he was
  88. 3:21with you when you repetitively kept
  89. 3:24saying that over and over again so i
  90. 3:27don't know if when you found out he
  91. 3:28passed that's the word you kept using
  92. 3:31over and over and over yeah cursed okay
  93. 3:34one word over and over and over and over
  94. 3:36is what he showed me this is a
  95. 3:38completely obvious guess that would be
  96. 3:40true in many a most instances but still
  97. 3:44he covers himself with equivocating
  98. 3:46language he says i'm supposed to say
  99. 3:49which leads up to i don't know
  100. 3:51john doesn't take any chances and again
  101. 3:54when the relative confirms he shifts to
  102. 3:56assertive language one word over and
  103. 3:58over and over and over is what he showed
  104. 4:00me are you like an amazing
  105. 4:02like baker or something like
  106. 4:09i'd like to say like cool i like cooking
  107. 4:13okay so what's the what's the pie or the
  108. 4:16sweet thing i'm supposed to be bringing
  109. 4:18up
  110. 4:18lemon meringue pie
  111. 4:22is that it was his favorite
  112. 4:27mediums use positive affirmations
  113. 4:29constantly not only do they tell
  114. 4:31relatives exactly what they want to hear
  115. 4:34about their deceased loved ones they
  116. 4:36also praise the relatives here john
  117. 4:39praises her cooking skills with a
  118. 4:41question format that allows for
  119. 4:43disagreement this is testing testing to
  120. 4:46see how she'll respond so that he can
  121. 4:48know how he's going to respond
  122. 4:51once she's somewhat agreed with the
  123. 4:53statement saying that she likes cooking
  124. 4:55john can now shift to a presupposition
  125. 4:57question okay so what's the what's the
  126. 5:00pie or the sweet thing i'm supposed to
  127. 5:02be bringing up these are more assertive
  128. 5:04questions presupposing that the relative
  129. 5:07has an answer but even when asking these
  130. 5:09questions he covers himself pie is
  131. 5:12specific and perhaps too specific so his
  132. 5:15second alternative sweet thing is way
  133. 5:18more general he now waits for the
  134. 5:21relative to fill the frame he's provided
  135. 5:23which he does the audience supposedly
  136. 5:26amazed but i don't think it's because of
  137. 5:27john's ability to make the relative give
  138. 5:30him all the answers
  139. 5:32this show is staged and the producers
  140. 5:34are kind enough to let us know
  141. 5:42next john makes guesses that the
  142. 5:44relative doesn't immediately comply with
  143. 5:47for each wrong guess he mentions another
  144. 5:50area that his initial guest could fit
  145. 5:52into
  146. 5:53or something like that
  147. 5:55this is hilarious
  148. 5:56and did you tell him he was out of this
  149. 5:58world or he was interplanetary or he was
  150. 6:00gala galactic or
  151. 6:02did he like have an obsession with nasa
  152. 6:04why am i seeing space oh you see i don't
  153. 6:07know he was into everything
  154. 6:10no i'm seeing space like i'm seeing like
  155. 6:12space
  156. 6:14i don't know
  157. 6:20i don't know what this is did you like
  158. 6:22go see star wars with him or something
  159. 6:23or
  160. 6:24like he wasn't into star wars or
  161. 6:27anything like that he was outside out
  162. 6:29dory i'm star wars
  163. 6:32i'm a trekkie
  164. 6:38rather than just quit the act john
  165. 6:40resorts to his first tactic provide a
  166. 6:43frame and wait for the relative to fill
  167. 6:45it yes why am i seeing space
  168. 6:48actually making the relative responsible
  169. 6:50for what he's claiming to see
  170. 6:52this is a pressure technique the reason
  171. 6:55why he admits that he doesn't know what
  172. 6:56this is is because the relative doesn't
  173. 6:59give him enough information to work with
  174. 7:01this time around
  175. 7:02so then where could i have gone where
  176. 7:04could you have gone that he could have
  177. 7:06been with you
  178. 7:07in the last year or so
  179. 7:09that
  180. 7:10has me inside something
  181. 7:12spaceship-like did you go to an exhibit
  182. 7:15were you someplace that
  183. 7:18like are you like standing in front of
  184. 7:19darth vader vader or
  185. 7:22i flew to um
  186. 7:25brisbane because he was my first
  187. 7:28husband's child and to celebrate
  188. 7:32the anniversary's death with his
  189. 7:34daughter in the plane okay and my first
  190. 7:37husband has remarried and his son is a
  191. 7:40trekkie he's right into the hole works
  192. 7:44and drugs there's nothing unique about
  193. 7:46being a star trek fan many people are
  194. 7:49and john's testing questions are
  195. 7:50designed so that if the relative had
  196. 7:52simply seen star trek or star wars it
  197. 7:55could look like he was able to guess
  198. 7:57something extraordinary and john's
  199. 8:00reaching here big time he keeps asking
  200. 8:03her where she could have gone that has
  201. 8:04him inside something spaceship-like as
  202. 8:07he ambiguously suggests he even lists
  203. 8:10alternatives for her to choose from he
  204. 8:12won't stop until she complies because if
  205. 8:15he fails here everyone's going to see
  206. 8:18through his act finally the much too
  207. 8:21cooperative relative comes up with the
  208. 8:23narrative that john can use this is the
  209. 8:25most common mistake relatives make they
  210. 8:27give so much information that the medium
  211. 8:30can use this information in upcoming
  212. 8:32questions
  213. 8:33so when you went right
  214. 8:35what's the
  215. 8:37submerged
  216. 8:38like i want to like like put you in
  217. 8:41into the moment so did you like go
  218. 8:43someplace and where you were
  219. 8:46like you put your face in the cutout and
  220. 8:48it's like you know darth vader and yoda
  221. 8:50or
  222. 8:51like
  223. 8:52is there did you go see that yeah
  224. 8:54i can't remember but yeah
  225. 8:56after you passed yes okay then he was
  226. 8:58with you when you did this space thing
  227. 9:01okay
  228. 9:02now that the relative somewhat confirmed
  229. 9:05something about space
  230. 9:07john can mention another obvious thing
  231. 9:09in this context so did you like go
  232. 9:11someplace and where you were he does so
  233. 9:14with the same self-protective
  234. 9:16equivocating language we've observed
  235. 9:19she says she can't remember but john
  236. 9:21quickly makes the fact that he was with
  237. 9:22her the most important thing
  238. 9:24he says space thing which is ambiguous
  239. 9:27and vague and at this point it's a bit
  240. 9:30unclear what she's actually agreed with
  241. 9:32mediums exploit people's preference for
  242. 9:35agreement if an authority figure keeps
  243. 9:37pushing hard enough many people will
  244. 9:40eventually give in
  245. 9:46and why did you ask for his socks
  246. 9:52john goes from talking about space to
  247. 9:54talking about songs
  248. 9:56and he uses a presupposition question
  249. 9:58this must mean he's incredibly gifted
  250. 10:00right
  251. 10:01wrong we can think of all the situations
  252. 10:04in life that john's question could be
  253. 10:06applied to all the times when she asked
  254. 10:08for her son's socks for whatever reason
  255. 10:11all john has to do is provide a frame
  256. 10:13for the relative so that she can fill it
  257. 10:16with her own interpretations
  258. 10:18i needed socks
  259. 10:21i had a wall scrap wool and used to call
  260. 10:23her mummy socks and he used to say i
  261. 10:26need another pair of mummy socks can you
  262. 10:28nip me another pair
  263. 10:30john didn't guess this experience at all
  264. 10:33he simply mentioned something very
  265. 10:35common sucks and waited for her to give
  266. 10:38details in this last clip john shows
  267. 10:40what it's all about tapping into
  268. 10:43people's emotions and making it look
  269. 10:45like the two of them just had a shared
  270. 10:47spiritual experience even though nothing
  271. 10:50could be further from the truth
  272. 10:53cool can i just like whisper something
  273. 10:54in her ear
  274. 10:56yes okay
  275. 10:58[Music]
  276. 11:08okay
  277. 11:15making generic guesses is the most
  278. 11:17important part of john's jar this is yet
  279. 11:20another hilarious excerpt where john
  280. 11:22makes vague descriptions to give himself
  281. 11:25leeway i have somebody's father who's
  282. 11:27coming through they have something that
  283. 11:28i would see as being pulmonary related
  284. 11:30and i feel like i'm supposed to talk
  285. 11:31about something with the anchor i don't
  286. 11:33know if there's a connection to the
  287. 11:35anchor on the person's body or if
  288. 11:37there's a connection that somebody has
  289. 11:38the anchor with them but i'm seeing an
  290. 11:40anchor in some way but it's in that back
  291. 11:41section there's a j or a g sounding name
  292. 11:44either living or past that's connected
  293. 11:45to them and when audience members don't
  294. 11:47comply john's suspiciously quick to move
  295. 11:50on to something else
  296. 11:52the woman that you're talking to did she
  297. 11:54come with somebody else yes okay there's
  298. 11:56somebody that's with her that has an
  299. 11:58older male that's passed that passed is
  300. 12:00that you
  301. 12:01would you stand up
  302. 12:02okay do you have an older male that
  303. 12:04passed yes my dad okay your father has
  304. 12:07passed okay all right go ahead john is
  305. 12:09that where the anchor comes in he was in
  306. 12:10the military
  307. 12:12okay but there's an anchor that they're
  308. 12:13showing me so that to me would mean that
  309. 12:14the word anchor has a meaning like
  310. 12:16somebody lived on anchor street where
  311. 12:18they have an anchor connection that
  312. 12:19comes up with them
  313. 12:20so there's got to be something about the
  314. 12:21word anchor connected to your families
  315. 12:23that they want me to bring up and then
  316. 12:24somebody lost a child to you guys do you
  317. 12:26know that there's a little girl in that
  318. 12:27section i think she was either in a
  319. 12:29vehicle accident or somebody was a
  320. 12:31younger female pass in a car accident
  321. 12:33right where you're standing that's all
  322. 12:35hope for a time when more people become
  323. 12:37more interested in the truth rather than
  324. 12:39what makes them feel good see you in the
  325. 12:42next video
  326. 12:43during the course of that i kept
  327. 12:45alluding to it like being this big
  328. 12:46family surprise shocking surprise that
  329. 12:49was in june i kept alluding to it like
  330. 12:51being this big family surprise
  331. 12:53shocking surprise
  332. 12:54i don't know what this is did you like
  333. 12:56go see star wars with him or something
  334. 12:57or
  335. 12:58like he was into star wars
  336. 13:16you
