1. 0:00So, Prince Louis is 8-years-old and he
2. 0:02just did something so quietly
3. 0:04extraordinary that the British press
4. 0:06doesn't really know what to do with it.
5. 0:08Because for years now, the story on this
6. 0:10kid has been set in stone. He's the wild
7. 0:14one, the cheeky one, the one pulling
8. 0:15faces on the balcony and sticking his
9. 0:18tongue out at his mother while the whole
10. 0:19world watches. That's the narrative.
11. 0:22That's the box they put him in when he
12. 0:24was 4-years-old. And now there's a
13. 0:26soldier in the Grenadier Guards walking
14. 0:28around with a child sports day medal in
15. 0:30the breast pocket of his tunic and the
16. 0:32story of how it got there completely
17. 0:33rewrites everything you thought you knew
18. 0:35about that little boy. So, before we go
19. 0:37any further, if you're new here and you
20. 0:39like following royal stories without all
21. 0:41the screaming headlines, hit subscribe
22. 0:44to Crown Watch really quick. We break
23. 0:46this stuff down properly. Okay, back to
24. 0:48it. The soldier in question is
25. 0:5022-years-old. He joined the Grenadier
26. 0:52Guards straight out of school, which is
27. 0:54the senior regiment of the foot guards,
28. 0:56the ones in the red tunics and those
29. 0:58tall black bearskin caps you see
30. 0:59standing outside Buckingham Palace and
31. 1:01Windsor Castle. He's from a small town
32. 1:04in the north of England. His mother's a
33. 1:05nurse. His father died when he was 11.
34. 1:09He doesn't want his name used, so I'm
35. 1:10going to call him the young guardsman.
36. 1:13The people who serve with him describe
37. 1:15him as quiet, the kind of soldier who
38. 1:17irons his kit twice, never complains
39. 1:20about a freezing night on duty, and
40. 1:22sends half his pay home to his mother
41. 1:23every month. That's who was standing
42. 1:25sentry at Windsor Castle on the morning
43. 1:27of September 8th. Now, if you've ever
44. 1:29been to Windsor, you've seen these
45. 1:31guardsmen. They stand absolutely still
46. 1:34in their boxes or march up and down
47. 1:36their few yards of gravel while tourists
48. 1:38take pictures. Most visitors are
49. 1:40respectful about it, some aren't. And
50. 1:42that morning, a group of four or five
51. 1:44young men, probably on a stag weekend by
52. 1:46the look of them, decided it would be
53. 1:48funny to stand right in front of this
54. 1:50soldier and try to make him laugh. They
55. 1:52stood a yard from his face. They filmed
56. 1:54him on their phones. They pulled faces.
57. 1:57They They things about his hat and his
58. 1:59mother and the king. One of them reached
59. 2:01out and flicked the chin strap of his
60. 2:03bear skin. And the young guardsman did
61. 2:05exactly what the army trains guardsman
62. 2:07to do. He stood still. He didn't [music]
63. 2:09blink. When one of them stepped over the
64. 2:12line on the ground that marks the sentry
65. 2:14space, he did what he's allowed to do.
66. 2:16He stamped his foot and shouted at them
67. 2:19to stand back from the king's guard in
68. 2:21that voice they teach you in training.
69. 2:23The men laughed and filmed that, too,
70. 2:25then wandered off toward the town. The
71. 2:27guardsman stood there for the rest of
72. 2:29his duty with his face burning under
73. 2:30that bear skin. It wasn't the first time
74. 2:33something like that had happened to him,
75. 2:35but it was the worst. And it was
76. 2:36September 8th, which for him, as it
77. 2:38turned out, mattered more than almost
78. 2:40any other day of the year. Because
79. 2:42September 8th is the day the late queen
80. 2:44died at Balmoral in 2022 at the age of
81. 2:4796 after 70 years on the throne. It was
82. 2:50the second day of term at Louise's new
83. 2:52school.
