- 0:00this lesson will cover the basic flying
- 0:02controls
- 0:03their location on the aircraft their
- 0:05operation and primary effects
- 0:07and the various methods available to
- 0:09designers for making control of the
- 0:11aircraft easier
- 0:12and safer for the pilots and ultimately
- 0:15of course
- 0:16safer and more comfortable for the
- 0:17passengers
- 0:19variations on the basic configurations
- 0:22will be covered in a subsequent lesson
- 0:25the basic method of changing the
- 0:26attitude of an aircraft
- 0:28that is its position relative to the
- 0:30horizon
- 0:31is by temporarily changing the camber of
- 0:33the airfoil of the wing
- 0:35tail plane or thin which will alter the
- 0:37lift it produces
- 0:40the diagram shows the change in lift
- 0:42with changes in control surface position
- 0:45the overall effect of a control movement
- 0:47will also depend on speed
- 0:53an aircraft needs to be controllable
- 0:55about each of its three axes which pass
- 0:58through the center of gravity
- 0:59or cg which is conventionally portrayed
- 1:02by a circle with
- 1:03alternate black and white quarters
- 1:06basic controls will consist of flap type
- 1:08sections incorporated into the trailing
- 1:10edges of the main flying surfaces
- 1:12and positioned at the extremities
- 1:14furthest from the cg
- 1:16to give the greatest control movement
- 1:19one axis runs vertically through the
- 1:21centre of gravity
- 1:24this is the normal axis movement about
- 1:26which
- 1:27is controlled by the rudder the vertical
- 1:29control surface
- 1:30attached to the fin the movement around
- 1:33the normal axis
- 1:34is called your and can be termed
- 1:36directional control
- 1:38it is worth noting however that the
- 1:40rudder is not used to change direction
- 1:42by yawing the aircraft
- 1:43but rather for preventing your both in
- 1:46normal and asymmetric flight
- 1:49this will be covered in more detail in a
- 1:51later lesson
- 1:54the lateral axis passes through the cg
- 1:56running parallel to a line passing
- 1:58through the wingtips
- 2:01and movement around this axis is called
- 2:03pitch
- 2:04the control surfaces are the elevators
- 2:07which move up and down together to give
- 2:09longitudinal control
- 2:10and are mounted on the trailing edge of
- 2:12the tail plane
- 2:15the third axis is the longitudinal axis
- 2:18which runs from nose to tail through the
- 2:20cg movement around this axis
- 2:23is called roll and is provided by the
- 2:27ailerons
- 2:28which are mounted at or near the wing
- 2:30tips
- 2:31they move in opposition the down going
- 2:33aileron increases the lift on that wing
- 2:36and the up going one decreases lift on
- 2:38the other
- 2:39giving lateral control these are the
- 2:42conventional three axis basic control
- 2:44surfaces
- 2:46in the following lesson we shall look at
- 2:48variations on the basic types of control
- 2:56surfaces
