  2. 0:04Okay, so we just went through how
  3. 0:05Richard Nixon,
  4. 0:08the first of the five Republican
  5. 0:10presidents since World War II, or the
  6. 0:12the second of the five, the first
  7. 0:14illegitimately elected of the of the
  8. 0:16four illegitimately elected president.
  9. 0:18Richard Nixon stole the election in
  10. 0:201968.
  11. 0:21He, of course, had to resign. Jerry Ford
  12. 0:23became president. He was never elected,
  13. 0:25so it kind of doesn't matter. Then you
  14. 0:27had, you know, coming out of the Carter
  15. 0:28presidency, um, we had, excuse me,
  16. 0:32coming out of the, um,
  17. 0:34coming out of the Ford presidency, we
  18. 0:36had Jimmy Carter, you know, legitimately
  19. 0:39elected.
  20. 0:40And after the Carter presidency, we had
  21. 0:44Ronald Reagan running for office.
  22. 0:47And this is where it gets really
  23. 0:49interesting.
  24. 0:51Uh but
  25. 0:53and in in fact, let me get into this and
  26. 0:55then you know we'll talk about George W.
  27. 0:57Bush I guess the next segment.
  28. 1:02Clip number one. This this is well
  29. 1:05actually
  30. 1:08I'm getting ahead of myself here and I
  31. 1:10really I I I I want to move right to the
  32. 1:12to the new stuff. This is here's what
  33. 1:14happened.
  34. 1:16Bonnie Solder.
  35. 1:24Bonnie Solder was the that's his last
  36. 1:27name was the candidate for president
  37. 1:30of Iran.
  38. 1:34And
  39. 1:36there we are.
  40. 1:38And he was,
  41. 1:40you know, when the movie Argo came out,
  42. 1:42the movie Argo basically portrays the
  43. 1:45the Iranian people as like, you know,
  44. 1:47bloodthirsty,
  45. 1:49you know, we, you know, we want the
  46. 1:50hostages, all this kind of stuff.
  47. 1:54And
  48. 1:59so Bonnie Solder comes out and here's
  49. 2:01what he wrote for
  50. 2:06the Christian Science Monitor.
  51. 2:10Isatola Kmeni and Ronald Reagan had
  52. 2:13organized a clandestine negotiation
  53. 2:16known as the October surprise which
  54. 2:19prevented the attempts by myself and
  55. 2:21then US President Jimmy Carter to free
  56. 2:24the hostages before the 1980 US
  57. 2:26presidential election took fa place. The
  58. 2:29fact that they were not released tipped
  59. 2:30the results of the election in favor of
  60. 2:32Reagan.
  61. 2:36Okay, this is this is the president of
  62. 2:38Iran.
  63. 2:42He says, "I openly opposed the hostage
  64. 2:44taking throughout the G election
  65. 2:45campaign, telling students that
  66. 2:46occupying an embassy in the heart of
  67. 2:48Tyran was a sign of cowardice rather
  68. 2:50than courage. I won the election with
  69. 2:52over 70% of the vote in part on that
  70. 2:54platform." Other candidates were also
  71. 2:57openly against hostage taking and
  72. 2:59overall 96% of the votes in that
  73. 3:02election
  74. 3:03the election in 1980 in Iran while the
  75. 3:06hostages were being held. 96% of votes
  76. 3:09in that election were given to
  77. 3:10candidates who were against it who were
  78. 3:12against the hostage taking.
  79. 3:15But the Reagan campaign,
  80. 3:19specifically Bill Casey, the
  81. 3:21chairperson, the chairman of the Reagan
  82. 3:22campaign, the guy that Reagan uh
  83. 3:25rewarded by making him head of the CIA.
  84. 3:27Bill Casey cut a deal with the Ayatollah
  85. 3:31as the president of Iran at that time
  86. 3:33just, you know, wrote last week for the
  87. 3:35Christian Science Monitor. Cut a deal
  88. 3:37with the Ayatollah to hold the hostages.
  89. 3:39Here's Ted Cppel talking about the the
  90. 3:42crisis. I mean, this this killed the
  91. 3:44Carter presidency. Here's Ted Cppel back
  92. 3:47in 1980.
  93. 3:49For Jimmy Carter, day 444 begins just as
  94. 3:53the last two days have begun. Without
  95. 3:55sleep, exhausted, surrounded by aids in
  96. 3:58the Oval Office, President Carter is
  97. 4:01desperately trying to salvage this
  98. 4:03symbolic victory for his administration
  99. 4:05to free the 52 American hostages before
  100. 4:09Ronald Reagan takes the oath of office
  101. 4:11at noon.
  102. 4:13Now, this is, you know, January,
  103. 4:15whatever it was, the day inauguration
  104. 4:17day,
  105. 4:18um, in January of 1981.
  106. 4:22Here's Ted Cppel as you know, Jimmy
  107. 4:25Carter is about to go up and say, you
  108. 4:28know, at the state of the or not state
  109. 4:29of the at the inauguration of Ronald
  110. 4:31Reagan. Here it is.
  111. 4:32Reports of the hostage release are
  112. 4:34flying fast and furiously now. With
  113. 4:37Ronald Reagan's oath of office now only
  114. 4:3930 minutes away, Jimmy Carter on his way
  115. 4:42to the inaugural podium is questioned by
  116. 4:45Sam Donaldson.
  117. 4:46Mr. President, are the hostages out?
  118. 4:48Can't say yet.
  119. 4:49Not yet. Not yet. Is that what he said,
  120. 4:52Frank? I couldn't hear.
  121. 4:53Not yet. Not yet. Not yet. Not yet. They
  122. 4:55cheated him. They cheated him right down
  123. 4:57to the end.
  124. 4:58He did.
