- 0:04>> This design presentation is flat and
- 0:06unclear. The drawings might be good, but
- 0:09the presentation doesn't communicate
- 0:10clearly. At the moment, there's no clear
- 0:12concept. The layout feels clumsy. The
- 0:15hierarchy between text [music] and
- 0:16images are quite off. And so, the client
- 0:18is left trying to piece the story
- 0:20together themselves. [music] So, in
- 0:21today's video, I'm going to take this
- 0:22presentation and turn it into this. And
- 0:25we'll walk through the process of
- 0:26turning a confusing presentation
- 0:28>> [music]
- 0:28>> into something that is clear,
- 0:30structured, and persuasive. Welcome back
- 0:32to the good versus bad [music] series.
- 0:34In this series, we take drawings and
- 0:36presentations that could be improved
- 0:38spatially, visually, and how they
- 0:39[music] communicate the design. And
- 0:41we'll refine them step by step. And if
- 0:43you want to follow along or try this
- 0:44workflow for yourself, there's a link in
- 0:46the description where you can create a
- 0:47free Round account. So, let's dive into
- 0:49it.
- 0:51So, here is the [music] existing
- 0:52drawings and presentation. Before we
- 0:53change anything, we need to understand
- 0:55why this doesn't work. And I think
- 0:57really there's three main issues. The
- 0:59first one is that there's no clear
- 1:00concept [music] being communicated.
- 1:02They're just drawings at this point.
- 1:04The page layout hierarchy isn't quite
- 1:06[music] right. And everything feels the
- 1:09kind of same importance.
- 1:10And the third is that the storytelling
- 1:12is unclear. There's no real kind of
- 1:14narrative. There's no real supplementary
- 1:15[music] images or diagrams that helping
- 1:18support the story. And important
- 1:19information is missing. The drawings
- 1:21themselves are fine, but the
- 1:22presentation doesn't [music] guide the
- 1:23client through the project. So, let's
- 1:25improve it. We shouldn't really jump
- 1:27into the drawings first. We should first
- 1:29give [music] them some context of the
- 1:30site, the site conditions, then also
- 1:32what the concept of [music] the project
- 1:34is.
- 1:35So, you'll find here that we've got all
- 1:37of our drawings here in one place.
- 1:38[music] We've got our model canvas where
- 1:39we have our floor plans and elevations.
- 1:42And we also then have our paper canvas,
- 1:43which is where our presentation sits.
- 1:46And we're going to first jump into our
- 1:47paper [music] canvas, and we're going to
- 1:48add a page. So, we're just going to add
- 1:50a page at the bottom here. So, we can
- 1:52just
- 1:53>> [music]
- 1:53>> extend the presentation further and add
- 1:55a few more pages to it. And you can
- 1:57adjust and amend that page [music] size.
- 1:59You can do A3, A2, etc. You can make
- 2:01that page portrait or landscape. And so,
- 2:03what we're going to do is we're going to
- 2:04create a view [music] into our model
- 2:06canvas. And so, what we're doing here is
- 2:07we're just going to drop in our floor
- 2:09plan. And you can see here that [music]
- 2:11you can position and scale this as you
- 2:13please. You can crop it down. For
- 2:15example, if you wanted a zoomed-in
- 2:17element of a floor plan, you can zoom
- 2:19[music] in at 1:60 here, for example,
- 2:21and position that onto the page. And
- 2:23here we have a site plan in a model
- 2:25canvas.
- 2:26>> [music]
- 2:26>> So, you can see here we've got a site
- 2:27plan where we've done some site
- 2:29analysis. We've got We've indicated some
- 2:31kind of views, the site location.
- 2:33We've got the surrounding context, the
- 2:35kind of sun [music] direction, the
- 2:37prevailing wind. We've got certain
- 2:38elements and kind of north arrows, etc.
- 2:41The detail that we need to indicate
- 2:43where the site entrance is, [music]
- 2:44where the site section is, where we have
- 2:46kind of public versus private site
- 2:48boundaries, all of the information and
- 2:49detail that we need as part of our
- 2:51[music] site. And we also have a zoning
- 2:53diagram. This is fundamentally a kind of
- 2:55concept zoning diagram that indicates
- 2:57[music] the relationship of spaces that
- 2:59form the kind of spatial relationship
- 3:02and the geometry of building. So, this
- 3:04is fundamentally where the shape [music]
- 3:06and the positioning of the floor plan
- 3:08has come from and where we have offices
- 3:10located, where we have circulation
- 3:11[music] spaces, garage, living room,
- 3:13etc. Where these zones kind of relate
- 3:15[music] to one another. And so, this
- 3:17will be really helpful to help describe
- 3:19to a client why [music] those certain
- 3:21rooms have been indicated in a certain
- 3:22way, what those circulation spaces are
- 3:24like,
- 3:25>> [music]
- 3:25>> and why the geometry has kind of been
- 3:26formed in this way. And so, what we're
- 3:28going to do is we're just going to
- 3:29create a few pages at [music] the top
- 3:30here, but you'll notice that now the
- 3:31page order is slightly off. You've got 4
- 3:345 1 2 [music] 3. And so, you can head to
- 3:37the left-hand side here, go to pages,
- 3:39and you can now [music] adjust the
- 3:41locations. So, we can drag these up and
- 3:42we can change the order. So, we can pull
- 3:44this up now [music] into 1 and 2. So,
- 3:46now we have a bit better of an order of
- 3:48a kind of portfolio and presentation
- 3:50structure.
- 3:51And we're going to create [music] a view
- 3:52into our site. And we're also going to
- 3:54create a view into our concept diagrams
- 3:57and run them [music] side by side. So,
- 4:00now basically, our first two slides of
- 4:02our presentation is now focused on the
- 4:04context, first introducing the site,
- 4:06introducing the location. We can [music]
- 4:08have some supplementary text alongside
- 4:10it, and then introducing the concept and
- 4:12the spatial arrangement of the building
- 4:14before then we go into the drawings.
- 4:16[music] So, we give the context, we take
- 4:18the client on this journey, and then we
- 4:19go into the drawings.
- 4:21And we can adjust and scale them and
- 4:24position them as we please. We can
- 4:25[music] adjust them to maybe 1:100,
- 4:27position them and crop down our
- 4:29viewport, and so [music] they're now
- 4:31side by side. Once the client
- 4:32understands the idea, the rest of the
- 4:34drawings start to make sense. Without
- 4:36that narrative, the project [music] just
- 4:37feels like a collection of drawings. So,
- 4:39the second issue with these drawings is
- 4:41the visual hierarchy. [music] Not every
- 4:43piece of information should have the
- 4:44same importance. At the moment, the text
- 4:47is far too big, for example. The
- 4:49presentation should be structured and
- 4:50ordered and feel professional. So, I'll
- 4:52start by restructuring the page layout
- 4:54from our drawings in the paper [music]
- 4:55canvas. So, the first thing that I want
- 4:57to add to this presentation, now we have
- 4:58the kind of drawings there, is we want
- 5:01to bring in some title blocks. [music]
- 5:02So, the title block will just give that
- 5:04consistency and that professionalism
- 5:06across the drawings. All of a sudden,
- 5:07there'll be a a page number, [music]
- 5:09there'll be information about scale,
- 5:10about the north arrow, all of these
- 5:12information and detail that is [music]
- 5:13required to understand the drawings.
- 5:15This will now be brought in using the
- 5:17title blocks. So, you can find title
- 5:19blocks in the block library. So, you
- 5:20want to drag and drop them in. You've
- 5:22got all of this detail [music] now about
- 5:23the client, the project, revision, the
- 5:25drawing number. And we can now copy this
- 5:27title block across [music] our
- 5:29presentation. So, I'm just going to move
- 5:31these views out of the way. I'm going to
- 5:32copy
- 5:33this title block across.
- 5:36And we can do it across [music] the
- 5:38entire presentation and adjust the
- 5:40drawing number as you see it. [music]
- 5:41Just double-click
- 5:44and adjust the drawing number. So, you
- 5:45can double-click the drawing number, and
- 5:47you can then change [music] and update
- 5:48them to 03 04 05, for example.
- 5:51And now we have more of a consistent
- 5:52structure to the drawings. The next
- 5:54thing is about understanding how we're
- 5:55going to organize the drawings [music]
- 5:57and where we're going to have pockets of
- 5:58text, pockets of drawings, and how we
- 6:00can start understanding the hierarchy
- 6:02and the positioning of the text and
- 6:04images. [music]
- 6:05So, we're going to do that by pretty
- 6:06much creating our own grid. So, I can do
- 6:09that by just drawing some rectangles
- 6:10[music]
- 6:11and adjusting the thickness. In this
- 6:13case, we're just going to adjust the
- 6:14thickness to [music] a uh let's do a
- 6:17maybe a border or margin of 0.7.
- 6:20And we can just drop [music] that and
- 6:21position it into place. We can then copy
- 6:23that element and basically run it along
- 6:24the sides, which will then give us a
- 6:26structure and a grid [music] language to
- 6:27our presentation.
- 6:29And so, this is quite simple where we're
- 6:30just going to copy and paste these
- 6:32across and position them into place. We
- 6:34can then maybe make that a red, [music]
- 6:36so we can adjust the stroke
- 6:38and maybe make the line weight a dash,
- 6:41maybe a two times. [music] So, you can
- 6:42now see that it's red, and then maybe
- 6:44fill that red and drop the opacity right
- 6:46down.
- 6:47And we can then [music]
- 6:48adjust and position the location of
- 6:51these elements. So, now we have a margin
- 6:52[music] and a structure and a language
- 6:54that we can follow. And that will allow
- 6:56us to be consistent and clear throughout
- 6:58each slide of the presentation. [music]
- 7:00So, we can then position our view into
- 7:02place.
- 7:03Likewise with our now legend [music] in
- 7:06the corner.
- 7:07We can then adjust the text size that we
- 7:09have right down. And we can spend some
- 7:11time just adjusting it, moving some of
- 7:13the tags back up. We have the ground
- 7:14[music] floor plan up there now. We can
- 7:16then start copying across that grid
- 7:19structure
- 7:21across our presentation and start
- 7:23dropping [music]
- 7:24our drawings into place following the
- 7:25same structure, dropping some text in.
- 7:28We can adjust some elements here and
- 7:30there
- 7:30>> [music]
- 7:30>> to make sure that it kind of suits each
- 7:32drawing type.
- 7:34We can add our titles in, [music] for
- 7:36example. And we can apply this across
- 7:38our entire presentation. And now, when
- 7:40we turn [music] that layer off, so if we
- 7:41turn that grid layer off, all of a
- 7:43sudden, we have a presentation that is
- 7:45much clearer, much better structured.
- 7:47[music]
- 7:48It has much more detail to it. It feels
- 7:50a bit more professional, feels cleaner.
- 7:52[music]
- 7:52The hierarchy is slightly better. The
- 7:54drawings pop a little bit more because
- 7:56now the the text is [music] kind of
- 7:57balanced out. And so, now all of a
- 7:59sudden, it feels and it looks a little
- 8:01bit more kind of professional and
- 8:02structured.
- 8:04And so, the next step is just going to
- 8:05be adding some [music] kind of
- 8:06supporting text and a key, for example,
- 8:10a legend to the site [music] plan and
- 8:12concept diagrams to help the client
- 8:14understand the different kind of color
- 8:16references, the the kind of different
- 8:17notes
- 8:18>> [music]
- 8:18>> in the site plan, so they can understand
- 8:20the site analysis. So, in this case,
- 8:21we're just going to go into the model
- 8:22canvas. [music] We're going to copy over
- 8:24some of the elements that we want to
- 8:25start indicating as part of our key and
- 8:27our legend.
- 8:28>> [music]
- 8:29>> So, we can scale this down into place.
- 8:30We can then add a bit of text alongside.
- 8:33And then we can do the same for all of
- 8:34the elements for prevailing wind, sun,
- 8:36views, [music] trail path, site
- 8:37entrance, etc. And line it up with our
- 8:40grid.
- 8:41So, now that this looks and feels and is
- 8:45much [music] more readable alongside the
- 8:47floor plan.
- 8:48We can do the same thing for the concept
- 8:50diagram. [music]
- 8:51We can select some of those color blocks
- 8:54and scale them down and position them
- 8:56onto the paper canvas.
- 8:58And then add some kind of supporting
- 8:59[music] text which identifies the
- 9:01different room sizes and the kind of
- 9:03room
- 9:04>> [music]
- 9:04>> requirements from the brief. And we can
- 9:06now have a full presentation now that
- 9:09shows all of that information and that
- 9:11required [music] detail to understand
- 9:12how we're responding to the client's
- 9:14intentions and how we've analyzed the
- 9:17site, we've [music] come to a design
- 9:18solution in terms of the spatial
- 9:20relationships, and then we're going to
- 9:21the floor plans and drawings that then
- 9:22support them. And so, I think a good
- 9:24presentation always has a clear focal
- 9:26point, supporting information, and
- 9:28breathing [music] space around the
- 9:30elements. So, giving that grid structure
- 9:32and margins helps support that. And the
- 9:34key is that the main drawings should be
- 9:35big. They should be large, and the
- 9:36supporting elements [music] should be
- 9:38much smaller alongside them. Now, when
- 9:40someone looks at the page, they
- 9:41instinctively know where to look first.
- 9:43There's a there's a focal point. There's
- 9:45a there's a hierarchy to the drawings. A
- 9:47good presentation design isn't about
- 9:49[music] adding more information. It's
- 9:50about organizing the information so it's
- 9:52easy to understand. And so, at this
- 9:54point, the presentation is much [music]
- 9:56cleaner and neater, but it's missing one
- 9:58thing and that's just some images. Now
- 10:00in this case the presentation is very
- 10:01drawing heavy. There's lots of diagrams,
- 10:02there's lots of uh kind of sections,
- 10:04elevations, etc. Now I think what would
- 10:06be really helpful to support [music]
- 10:08this presentation would be an image. And
- 10:10we can do that by creating a [music]
- 10:12generative AI image using the AI Rayon
- 10:15panel. We can use the Rayon AI tool to
- 10:20prompt it and [music] to create some
- 10:22images for us. And so you have two
- 10:24options. You can either add a file or
- 10:25you can [music] add a screenshot. So in
- 10:27this case we're just going to add a
- 10:28screenshot of this bedroom and we're
- 10:30just [music] going to create an example
- 10:32an inspiration image uh to give maybe
- 10:35the client some kind of supporting
- 10:36[music] information to have give them an
- 10:37idea of what this space could look like.
- 10:40And so what we're going to do is [music]
- 10:41going to select tools
- 10:43and we're then going to choose generate
- 10:44image and then you can prompt it to say
- 10:46create an image of this uh bed layout
- 10:49for example [music] of this large
- 10:51bedroom with with large windows. In this
- 10:53case it's not quite right not quite
- 10:55matching
- 10:56>> [music]
- 10:56>> um
- 10:57the kind of general arrangement of the
- 10:59floor plan, but you can rework into it.
- 11:01At this point we've got a kind of bird's
- 11:02eye view looking down into the room.
- 11:04[music] I want to create more of a kind
- 11:05of human eye perspective and so you can
- 11:08then re-prompt it and so now all of a
- 11:10sudden we've got something a little bit
- 11:11more clearer and it gives them an idea
- 11:12of this type [music] of space that we're
- 11:14trying to create. So we've got these
- 11:15pitched roofs, we've then got this large
- 11:17window and [music] we can then work into
- 11:19that even more if you wanted to you
- 11:20could change the floor finish, you could
- 11:22change the color of the bed, you could
- 11:23change the color of the wood. What we're
- 11:25going to do is we're going to insert
- 11:26that [music] image and drop it into our
- 11:27presentation. We're going to scale that
- 11:30down, position it into place.
- 11:31>> [music]
- 11:31>> A really handy tool here is if you
- 11:33double click the image you can then crop
- 11:35and kind of pull in uh the image as you
- 11:38wish. So if you scale it down you want
- 11:39to make it more kind of landscape
- 11:40[music] you can work into that.
- 11:43And alongside this particular image I'm
- 11:45going to then pull in a detail. So we
- 11:48have this millwork detail showing the
- 11:50kind of bed detail. [music]
- 11:51We're going to drop a view into that
- 11:54detail run it alongside a 1 [music] to
- 11:5610 scale. We can even make that even
- 11:58smaller maybe 1 to 15. And then we can
- 12:01add some supporting [music] text with
- 12:03kind of bedroom inspiration and maybe
- 12:06some millwork
- 12:07um drawing [music]
- 12:08detail.
- 12:11And then now all of a sudden we have a
- 12:12supporting
- 12:14image that then just adds that I guess
- 12:16variety and [music] that kind of visual
- 12:18intrigue for the client who now has a
- 12:21variety of site [music] conditions,
- 12:23concept, floor plan, elevation, sections
- 12:25and then maybe a reference [music] image
- 12:27of how we envision the space for
- 12:29example. You can then export this
- 12:30presentation as a PDF. [music] We head
- 12:32to the top left corner we can click
- 12:34export. We can then choose which pages
- 12:36you want to [music] export. You can
- 12:37export as a PNG or a PDF. Change the
- 12:40image quality.
- 12:42And then once you export it you can now
- 12:44see here that the line weights and the
- 12:45quality of the drawing is really
- 12:47>> [music]
- 12:47>> much more improved. It's a much stronger
- 12:49presentation now. And so when the client
- 12:51asks what am I looking for the
- 12:52presentation isn't doing a good job. Now
- 12:54it's much clearer. And so a good design
- 12:56presentation isn't about showing
- 12:57everything. [music]
- 12:58It's about showing the right things in
- 13:00the right order. A clear concept, strong
- 13:03visual hierarchy and a story that
- 13:04[music] guides the client through the
- 13:06project. Often the difference between a
- 13:08confusing presentation and compelling
- 13:09one is simply clarity and structure.
