- 0:00We're afraid we're gonna have to
- 0:01interrupt the meeting to print.
- 0:07>> Roger and
- 0:15>> him.
- 0:19>> Is anybody going to be on there?
- 0:21>> I don't know. I'm hoping we might get
- 0:23Dylan and let
- 0:24>> Well, he said he was sick and he texted
- 0:26me. Said he'd look at the notes later.
- 0:29So, I'm assuming he's not going to be
- 0:31able to call.
- 0:33>> Well, I'm going to keep it open for a
- 0:34few minutes just in case. If not, I'll
- 0:36take
- 0:37>> As soon as you pass out the papers,
- 0:40>> his name is Jason.
- 0:42>> As soon as Jason passes out the paper,
- 0:49>> don't don't give any to that guy behind
- 0:51you. Just more trouble. He'll probably
- 0:53get a straw, make spit balls out of
- 0:55them, and something,
- 0:57>> you know. Good son-in-laws are hard to
- 0:58come by.
- 1:01>> Did you know we found spitballs after
- 1:04the June 6th conference?
- 1:06>> Not surprised.
- 1:08>> All over the far side of a
- 1:11>> Wow.
- 1:12>> They weren't spitting on. They were more
- 1:14just confetti.
- 1:16>> I don't know. Some of them I saw look
- 1:18like they've been chewed on.
- 1:20>> Oh
- 1:21>> yeah.
- 1:22>> Vinnie is looking for the date of
- 1:26the
- 1:27You talk to Vinnie,
- 1:30>> my cousin.
- 1:33>> Vinnie. Vinnie. Vinnie. Whatever his
- 1:35last name, I can't remember.
- 1:36>> Dennis.
- 1:38>> Cuz I talked to one day said he was
- 1:40going to another church.
- 1:41>> Oh, he is.
- 1:42>> He He goes He crosses back and forth.
- 1:44He's got friends at university.
- 1:46>> No, but he was he was saying it like
- 1:50>> No, he switches. He spends 50% of the
- 1:52time over there. 50% when he came to our
- 1:55small group last night. Oh, he did.
- 1:57>> Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
- 1:58>> And uh he was wanting to know when
- 2:03the bilingual
- 2:05family retreat is up there in Rio.
- 2:08>> It's the last Sunday of
- 2:12>> August.
- 2:13>> Okay.
- 2:17He he he remembers that from last time.
- 2:20And
- 2:21>> he went with Mark and Martha, didn't he?
- 2:23>> No. Uh Mark and Martha went,
- 2:28>> but he's got to put in his request for
- 2:30his caregiver
- 2:32to take him. Yeah. So, it's got to be in
- 2:36far enough
- 2:38in advance for that. I was talking to
- 2:51you and we'll just turn off all the air
- 2:53conditioners.
- 2:55You can't handle that. You're going to
- 2:57be in for a world of hurt if you want to
- 2:59refer to the European Union.
- 3:03>> Let's let's start with a prayer.
- 3:05Dear heavenly father, we thank you so
- 3:07much for allowing us to gather here to
- 3:09continue our search for a minister. We
- 3:12ask that you continue to give us wisdom
- 3:14and insight to
- 3:17the qualities we are looking for in a
- 3:19man that um you keep us united and
- 3:24focused on the things that you want us
- 3:28to to look at that we trust that you
- 3:31will send the the man that you want. We
- 3:33just need to have our eyes open and our
- 3:35hearts open when that person walks in
- 3:38front of us. Um, please be with those
- 3:41that weren't able to attend today and as
- 3:46Dylan is sick and uh, you know, help
- 3:49them and heal them and wherever the
- 3:52others are that you keep them safe as
- 3:54they return to the next meeting. This we
- 3:57pray in your son's name. Amen.
- 4:00>> Oh, there's Roger. There he is. It's
- 4:02working already. Man, I got here in time
- 4:05for the prayer.
- 4:05>> All right.
- 4:07>> Here, you can have one of these.
- 4:09>> Did you have a Did you have a a sample?
- 4:14>> What?
- 4:14>> A s You know, you were working on this
- 4:16or did you have a sample? Sure.
- 4:18>> I don't.
- 4:19>> Okay. You got it in your mind, right?
- 4:21>> I've got it in my mind. I didn't get it
- 4:23on paper.
- 4:24>> Okay. That's all right. We'll we'll work
- 4:26on that.
- 4:27>> Are we recording? Because he's got it in
- 4:30his mind.
- 4:30>> Yes, we are.
- 4:33I got that on my mind, too.
- 4:36>> Thank you for the reminder.
- 4:39You'll hear about it right now. I wanted
- 4:41to show and I shared it with um as you
- 4:44can tell, we've already uh at the before
- 4:48we even started the meeting, we we lost
- 4:50one member. Just last week, we lost
- 4:53another member. And as we continue to go
- 4:55through, we've had some that can't be
- 4:57here for whatever reason. So, I was
- 4:59thinking about things and the fact that
- 5:01we have technology in our favor, we're
- 5:04able to get outside these four walls and
- 5:06um include others. Um I thought and I
- 5:11shared with Dave um we have a brother
- 5:15Mark Gaiton who is basically stuck at
- 5:17home all the time, you know, waiting
- 5:20some medical issues and everything and
- 5:22he's always trying to stay in touch and
- 5:25involved in everything. And um
- 5:29So, um, my thought was to reach out to
- 5:32him and I tried today, uh, and ask him
- 5:35if he'd like to be a part of this
- 5:37committee. Um, he's he was one of our
- 5:40deacons at one time over the youth
- 5:41ministry. Um, and his, uh, medical
- 5:45issues had to have him step down. Uh,
- 5:48he's the one that created the men's
- 5:49breakfast that we have once a month.
- 5:53um he's texting different groups all the
- 5:56time and keeping in touch and praying
- 5:57for everybody here. And I thought, you
- 5:59know, this would this would be a great
- 6:01way to keep him involved and show our
- 6:04love and included in this
- 6:07in this
- 6:09if he if he accepts. I just wanted you
- 6:11guys all to know that, you know, that uh
- 6:14I was going to reach out to him and ask
- 6:16him if he'd like to be a part of that
- 6:18part of this. and
- 6:21>> he also holds a a Bible study on
- 6:26Thursday morning and he's got something
- 6:28like five
- 6:30participants that call in via the cell
- 6:33phone or Zoom whatever uh in regards to
- 6:37out of state. So he's got some friends
- 6:40that he's cultivating. In addition, his
- 6:43surgery is scheduled for the first week
- 6:45in in August. So about one August two of
- 6:49them are going to be
- 6:52clinic and
- 6:57he expects to probably stay there pretty
- 7:01close to three weeks
- 7:03>> at least.
- 7:06Talking about his Bible study, from that
- 7:08Bible study, two people flew out here
- 7:12from California to have Mark baptized
- 7:15them, that couple
- 7:18you remember them?
- 7:24>> Yes. So, I thought I'd reach out to him
- 7:26and extend that. I think he'll be if he
- 7:30accepts would be very beneficial to our
- 7:33group and I would hope that we can be a
- 7:36benefit to him and showing our love uh
- 7:39in getting him involved even if he can't
- 7:42be here in person because we've got the
- 7:45technology. We've got
- 7:49So, all right. So, um starting off, um
- 7:54we're going to talk about uh this
- 7:55wonderful
- 7:58letter that
- 7:59Joe wrote. I thought it was very moving.
- 8:02Well, actually, I listened to all of you
- 8:04last time carefully and and I I taken
- 8:07notes and I pretty much tried to put
- 8:11into both of these documents what I
- 8:14heard you guys saying. So that was
- 8:16really my goal and I tried to do it
- 8:18while I was fresh in my head. So
- 8:21hopefully as we go through this you'll
- 8:22see some of your own remarks that I
- 8:25heard from each of you and so that's so
- 8:28it's really a joint effort here.
- 8:30>> Well I thought the um the cover letter
- 8:33was extra I you know I thought that it
- 8:37was very welcoming. It was exciting. It
- 8:40drew the reader in.
- 8:41>> Yeah. um that it it told a good story
- 8:45about Los Cusus, about the church, uh
- 8:48about who we are, and um about what we
- 8:51were looking for. I I I I had a good
- 8:54feeling about it when I read it that um
- 8:56it just wasn't a bunch of words. It had
- 8:59feeling and truth and honesty behind it.
- 9:02And you know, that that's how I read it.
- 9:05And anybody else?
- 9:07>> I second that what he said. She just
- 9:09agrees with me because we're in the
- 9:11office too. Life goes better when she
- 9:13agrees.
- 9:18>> I just mess with her all the time. We
- 9:20have fun. She can't stand.
- 9:22>> We're brother and sister.
- 9:24>> We're siblings.
- 9:26>> Okay.
- 9:27>> We're blood siblings.
- 9:30>> This place a lot. Yeah.
- 9:33>> I'm the brother from another mother.
- 9:37>> All right. Anybody else have anything
- 9:39they'd like to offer or you know comment
- 9:41about the cover letter?
- 9:45>> One thing I can do is I can go through
- 9:47both of these and and as we go through
- 9:51you want to make comments or remarks I
- 9:52can write them down and I can polish it
- 9:54further. That's really what I have in
- 9:57mind that this is really a draft
- 10:01and there's some things that could be
- 10:03done better.
- 10:07>> Like I I thought the cover letter was
- 10:09right where we needed it to be.
- 10:11>> Yeah. What I envision is a cover letter
- 10:14and a job description would go out to
- 10:16not only universities but churches that
- 10:18that you feel like might be a good place
- 10:22or recruiting someone because there for
- 10:25example the church of Christ where we
- 10:27were there are assistant associate
- 10:30ministers there who are coming to the
- 10:32end of a contract or whatever.
- 10:37So it wouldn't be just universities. It
- 10:39could be other other churches where you
- 10:41think
- 10:43you respect
- 10:43>> I think send it out just as you know
- 10:45please pass this on as a reference we
- 10:48you know we were members at your church
- 10:50for x amount of years you know
- 10:52>> if you know somebody please pass this
- 10:55along. You had a comment, Dave?
- 11:02>> Apologize.
- 11:06>> Now, off to a second part, the page two.
- 11:11I like it.
- 11:13I like it, but I feel that it may be
- 11:18lacking in details. So, that's just my
- 11:21thought. Um I guess uh just the spec
- 11:24more specifics u may need to be added um
- 11:29when it comes to uh roles and
- 11:31responsibilities.
- 11:33>> Uh I think maybe just defining um
- 11:36exactly what we want. Um and I can see
- 11:40it in there,
- 11:42>> you know, like when it you know when you
- 11:44I think you were talking about office
- 11:45time being um meeting with the meeting
- 11:49with different people studying and that
- 11:51it's there, but it's it's in between the
- 11:54lines, you know, you're kind of reading
- 11:56in between some of the sentence or just
- 11:58kind of it's kind of not direct, I
- 12:02guess, not just one of those. I see a
- 12:05job description. I say this is what you
- 12:07>> That's just me and I could be pushing it
- 12:09a little farther than it maybe need to
- 12:11go. Yes, Dave,
- 12:14>> that's all right. Uh
- 12:18the congregation really into a lot of
- 12:21trouble with the first breacher.
- 12:23>> Um,
- 12:24>> with what
- 12:25>> with the first breacher we hired out of
- 12:27the two. Um,
- 12:29and and one of the things that I thought
- 12:32would might be appropriate is to also
- 12:36come up with uh an expectation because
- 12:40we're we're talking about I still
- 12:43consider preachers of the ministry, but
- 12:45that's either here or there.
- 12:47Everything's so close, but
- 12:50To me, the eldership needs to truly come
- 12:54on down and have their own roles and
- 12:56responsibilities, I think, written down.
- 13:00I don't know if it's appropriate or not
- 13:02to make a recommendation, but for both
- 13:05preachers,
- 13:07uh,
- 13:09the eldership, and I take fault at that,
- 13:13uh, because I was an elder at the time,
- 13:15uh,
- 13:17we were remiss in
- 13:20sitting on down and doing evaluations
- 13:24and such like that. And things started a
- 13:28while diverging off. And it was kind of
- 13:30like once you start to diverge off, it's
- 13:33hard to come on back to a a a
- 13:38Christian relationship between the
- 13:41eldership and between the preacher.
- 13:43And that happened definitely on the
- 13:45first one. And I could see uh I thought
- 13:49I saw something in regards to the
- 13:50second. So uh if we're going to do this,
- 13:54I don't know if it's appropriate or not,
- 13:56but something the elders uh in regards
- 13:59to
- 14:01you know an annual evaluation and such
- 14:03like that.
- 14:05That way the preacher or the minister
- 14:08will understand from his standpoint that
- 14:11there will be evaluation
- 14:14in regards to constructive comments.
- 14:19>> Yes. Go ahead.
- 14:22>> What you were discussing earlier in the
- 14:25office just
- 14:30Go ahead.
- 14:33>> No, he was saying that we need to be
- 14:36really really, you know, if the list is
- 14:39this long of what we expect roles and
- 14:42responsibilities,
- 14:44you can always pull back,
- 14:46>> but once it's printed in a posting, you
- 14:49can't add to it.
- 14:52>> Well, yes, you can because it's called
- 14:53the contract. Well, you can, but you you
- 14:56get to the part I think where you're
- 14:57talking about is it starts going like,
- 15:00"Well, I didn't really see it there
- 15:02before. Now you're trying to add stuff
- 15:03on top of what you want me to do. Now
- 15:06you're you you you have to rewrite a
- 15:08contract. You have to make amendments to
- 15:11it." And so people are having to agree.
- 15:13And I think we can just cut out that.
- 15:15I'm not saying we have to have a list
- 15:17like this long, but I think we need to
- 15:19sit here and put everything out that we
- 15:22want. And then if we can combine, you
- 15:25know, edit it down and say, you know,
- 15:27we're okay with or without this comment
- 15:30or this this uh requirement, we can live
- 15:33without it. And then but I think I think
- 15:36we should try and put everything or ask
- 15:38for everything just on the piece of
- 15:40paper. Not that it's going to be a
- 15:42final, but just to put everything down
- 15:44so we can say these are all the things
- 15:46we could have it just the perfect way.
- 15:48This is everything we would ask for.
- 15:50>> The first minister search committee
- 15:52Prior to the preachers, the congregation
- 15:55elected to go for a youth ministry
- 15:59because we had men of the congregation
- 16:01that gave outstanding. There was six of
- 16:04them and they gave outstanding lessons
- 16:07on Sunday morning.
- 16:09The problem with
- 16:14the youth minister
- 16:16uh roles and responsibilities, it was so
- 16:19tight that they had actually had uh Dave
- 16:23Harelson who has been the youth minister
- 16:26on over there at the University Church
- 16:28of Christ, now the University Community
- 16:31Church. Uh he could not qualify for it
- 16:35and he has a a master's degree plus and
- 16:38he's been teaching for 45 years. So
- 16:44there's got to be a happy medium in
- 16:46regards to things.
- 16:48>> I believe we'll get there. So,
- 16:49>> I believe we'll get there, but I think,
- 16:50you know, we just need to throw it all
- 16:52on paper and then we just keep reviewing
- 16:54it until we pull it into where we
- 16:57everybody's comfortable about it. And
- 17:00then we still have to, you know, hey,
- 17:01give it to the elders and say, you know,
- 17:04what do you see or don't see that's
- 17:05listed on here that like you were
- 17:07saying, you know, what what are the
- 17:09elders going to want from all of this?
- 17:11Um, and give give them an opportunity to
- 17:15go through it. And I think the more we
- 17:17put on it, it'll it'll help they can
- 17:20just cross it out.
- 17:20>> So our charter is only for these two
- 17:22pieces of paper, correct?
- 17:24>> No, I think we're supposed to actually
- 17:27reach out to
- 17:30universities and churches and advertise
- 17:32and begin to bring in
- 17:35>> No, I understand. But we're not going to
- 17:38get into a contract that's going to be
- 17:39the responsibility or are we going to be
- 17:42involved in that somewhere?
- 17:45That's a good question because I don't
- 17:46think there's really a definition in all
- 17:48the papers. Um because you're asking for
- 17:52like when you talk about evaluation, you
- 17:54can write it on here. Okay, that you
- 17:58know um a yearly evaluation is what you
- 18:01conducted a performance evaluation.
- 18:04Okay. But you can write it on there, but
- 18:06unless somebody does it and who's
- 18:08responsible for it and you're talking
- 18:10about something that's after the fact of
- 18:12the search community, who's supposed to
- 18:14do the evaluation?
- 18:16So remember, I don't know. I mean, we
- 18:18had a somebody and I had a conversation
- 18:21that, you know, we could even take
- 18:25and offer something past the selection.
- 18:29Once the preacher is selected, minister
- 18:31selected, then we create a kind of a pre
- 18:36minister evaluation committee to provide
- 18:38feedback to assist the elders in giving
- 18:42that feedback and as well as
- 18:43accountability to make sure it happens
- 18:45because it wasn't happening before. And
- 18:47that's why you're probably saying it,
- 18:49right? Because it really didn't happen
- 18:51and it caused this on both of them.
- 18:55Well, it was attempted on the first one
- 18:57and it didn't happen on the second.
- 19:01So, you know, it's
- 19:04>> technically technically we're only
- 19:06charged with
- 19:08recommending
- 19:11>> who
- 19:11>> who to hire. That that's our charge.
- 19:14Recommend to the elders who to hire.
- 19:17What happens after that and signing that
- 19:19contract is all on the elders that they
- 19:21agree to this or what to that and
- 19:24hire hire the minister and then it
- 19:28becomes their responsibility
- 19:30to all the other stuff that may be in
- 19:33there. So if we put in here uh a
- 19:37quarterly review a yearly evaluation
- 19:41you know
- 19:42>> that that to me should be as part of the
- 19:43contract. This is
- 19:45>> well it still needs to be somewhere said
- 19:47but you know we can even put that we can
- 19:50at least write it down and say you know
- 19:51this will be added into a contract and
- 19:53say it in a conversation you know if
- 19:56you're interviewing somebody hey we do
- 19:57have you know quarterly yearly you know
- 20:00feedback sessions and whatever blah blah
- 20:02blah to be conducted by X Y and Z you
- 20:06know but like I said as long as they
- 20:08don't do it nothing's going to happen
- 20:10>> it was just something that I was
- 20:12thinking after this is our primary
- 20:13objective right now of is it appropriate
- 20:17to work on this first?
- 20:18>> Yeah, it's this is our our rough rough
- 20:22draft. So, we just need to add to it,
- 20:24massage it to get it to where we want so
- 20:26that we can post it to wherever and uh
- 20:30get somebody to apply for a job. We just
- 20:34want to make sure that we're including
- 20:35the right message.
- 20:37>> No, that's not that's down the road.
- 20:40That's down the road. First, we got to
- 20:42start getting somebody's
- 20:45And that's going to, you know, do all of
- 20:47this conversation.
- 20:48>> You know, I think we have to recognize
- 20:51that a lot of the
- 20:54specifics about the job can be saved for
- 20:57the interview. I mean, if someone comes
- 21:00in for an interview, you can make it
- 21:02very plain to that person. You know,
- 21:04there is a job evaluation quarterly or
- 21:08whatever. You don't have to try to get
- 21:11everything in a document like this. you
- 21:13can say for the interview where you
- 21:14clarify.
- 21:16>> So that's why it's probably best to to
- 21:18not be too
- 21:20tuned here, but rather make sure you
- 21:23capture the the high level
- 21:25characteristics you want and then when
- 21:28you do the interview, you make it very
- 21:29clear this this this and this is what I
- 21:32expect.
- 21:32>> Then maybe we just carry all those other
- 21:35>> we write it all down. Then we just cut
- 21:37it off and say, you know, this part
- 21:39belongs with the interview conversation.
- 21:41This part will be okay.
- 21:43Well, what what I remember is, you know,
- 21:46when we did this back in Wisconsin, you
- 21:48know, started seeing people in what you
- 21:50learned is that each one of them has
- 21:52their own unique skill set.
- 21:56>> And so ultimately, you know, if you hire
- 21:58this one, you're probably going to set
- 22:00up a contract that says we want you to
- 22:02do this that plays to your strengths,
- 22:05but if we hire this one, it's going to
- 22:06look very the contract will look very
- 22:08different. So, I think a lot of what
- 22:10you're wanting to needs to be laid out
- 22:13contract before they sign the
- 22:14government.
- 22:16>> And to to Gail's point, given the fact
- 22:19that every one of these candidates is
- 22:21quite a bit different from each other,
- 22:23if you really make this laser focused on
- 22:26some very, very specific things, you're
- 22:28going to rule out a bunch of people. Got
- 22:30to be careful with that.
- 22:32And when I worked at Kimberly Park, we
- 22:35were looking for engineers, mathematics,
- 22:38and whatnot. We had to be careful not to
- 22:40be so exclusive, but we only got two
- 22:45and and we had we ran into that problem
- 22:48where it was poorly written and was just
- 22:51too too specific that we couldn't get
- 22:53anybody.
- 22:54>> Like I said, I think we should just
- 22:56write them down. Just write them down.
- 22:58I'm not saying they need to stay in
- 22:59there. It's just what's in what are you
- 23:01thinking about because what you think
- 23:02about, what he thinks about, what
- 23:04everybody thinks about may be a little
- 23:05different. And so we just need to write
- 23:07them down. Then we can go back and
- 23:10trim it down if we want. Say this
- 23:12shouldn't be on here. This should be
- 23:13over here on interview guide for
- 23:15example. You know, we can talk about
- 23:17this later and stuff like that.
- 23:19>> Could we go through this and then you
- 23:21can help me?
- 23:22>> Go for it.
- 23:22>> And you can say, well, I don't know that
- 23:24that fits or that does fit, but we need
- 23:27something else and I can take notes as
- 23:30we go through here.
- 23:32>> Did everybody review the documents that
- 23:34the elders show that were another
- 23:38church.
- 23:39>> Yes,
- 23:40>> there might be some ideas on that that
- 23:42we could incorporate. I don't know if
- 23:44you can print those off.
- 23:47>> I can print them off just
- 23:56there in there
- 24:00expectations.
- 24:01Some of it was
- 24:03>> written like you had to write job
- 24:06description these are your work hours
- 24:08these are your work days and those kind
- 24:10of things which you would think you
- 24:11wouldn't have to do that
- 24:13>> but unfortunately you do
- 24:15>> just you know yeah and you know I'm not
- 24:17saying it all has to
- 24:18>> and I don't know if the elders are
- 24:20expecting us to go to that detail or if
- 24:22they have something
- 24:27>> they probably will but I think you know
- 24:32This is this is neat. Overd deliver.
- 24:36>> Yeah.
- 24:37>> Overd deliver.
- 24:39Not you know overd deliver. That way
- 24:42they could always scale back. You you
- 24:44know you don't get there then
- 24:53I can tell you some things that are
- 24:55here. One is that I wanted to make sure
- 24:59feel like we're working with you.
- 25:02>> Absolutely.
- 25:03>> We're not putting you out there to do
- 25:05this set of work and and we're going to
- 25:08dump you there. I wanted to make sure
- 25:10that they knew that they would be
- 25:12working alongside us and we would work
- 25:14alongside him. Another thing that I
- 25:17heard loud and clear last time is we
- 25:19take scripture seriously and you better
- 25:22come here and shine when you show us
- 25:25what you know. I mean, that's what they
- 25:27should take away. see this another one
- 25:30and I heard Roger say this basically uh
- 25:34words God's word is really special to
- 25:36you and I put in here by God's word to
- 25:39explore scripture and unpack this
- 25:41message for others. So, I'm not getting
- 25:43into specifics of how I want to see you
- 25:45do that, but somebody really has to come
- 25:47and have their heart on fire when they
- 25:49come here and show you that their heart
- 25:52is on fire for the Lord. And I wouldn't
- 25:54want somebody coming in, well, you know,
- 25:57David
- 26:02put everybody to sleep type message.
- 26:05>> Sometimes they think God's word is
- 26:08suggestions.
- 26:10>> What exactly?
- 26:11>> Suggestions.
- 26:13not commandments.
- 26:15>> Well, it is certainly describing a way
- 26:17for us to live and and that's really
- 26:20what this person I think should be
- 26:22about. So, I do have a section there key
- 26:24attributes of the prospective minister
- 26:26and I separated that apart from roles
- 26:28and responsibilities
- 26:30and you know I could shrink those
- 26:32paragraphs. I think it is good to have
- 26:34one page. If we can somehow do
- 26:35>> Absolutely.
- 26:36>> Yeah.
- 26:37>> Because first thing you don't want to do
- 26:39is have a whole novel on what it is we
- 26:42want you to be aware of before you come
- 26:45here. But I could try to shrink this
- 26:47first two paragraphs and add to your
- 26:50roles and responsibilities. Put in
- 26:52something that's more focused on
- 26:54something you really think it's got to
- 26:55be there. But let's read through this.
- 26:58just kind of give me your feedback on
- 27:01sentence by sentence.
- 27:05>> You want to start at the summary of
- 27:06position?
- 27:08>> Go ahead.
- 27:08>> Say, okay, the summary of the position.
- 27:10We seek a full-time minister to work
- 27:12alongside church members while sharing
- 27:15the gospel with Jesus Christ in Las.
- 27:18>> Okay, let's stop there. Is there
- 27:20anything else that you would like to see
- 27:22there or see how see that work
- 27:24differently?
- 27:26>> So, last week we decided on minister
- 27:28instead of preacher.
- 27:30>> I don't think we want to focus on that
- 27:32right now.
- 27:32>> I don't think it's really either.
- 27:34>> It's kind of ironic. I mean, I think
- 27:36it's
- 27:37>> okay. You put in whatever you work for
- 27:39for the moment. Put in whatever.
- 27:41>> If you look at ads that are out there,
- 27:43>> every church is listing both terms when
- 27:46they're talking about something.
- 27:48>> All they talking about a pulpit preacher
- 27:50that minister to the congregation. So,
- 27:52it's all in context.
- 27:54>> Yes.
- 27:55I think minister just a little more
- 28:00to include things
- 28:01>> right
- 28:02>> where preacher may may narrow the not
- 28:05that they're all that much different
- 28:06just it just feels to me a little bit
- 28:09more narrow that's it
- 28:11>> in this the second sentence here I
- 28:14deliberately put that focus on teaching
- 28:16and preaching because I noticed in the
- 28:19last place we were at UCCC we were over
- 28:21there I had gotten word that that
- 28:24somebody was saying that we don't we
- 28:27don't need Sunday school classes
- 28:28anymore. We don't need Bible classes.
- 28:32And so I want to make sure that
- 28:35we really want to
- 28:39attach a lot of points to that.
- 28:43Go ahead and continue.
- 28:44>> Um
- 28:46beyond just
- 28:51>> or Buzz Lightyear
- 28:55Yeah.
- 28:58Our hope is to accomplish this task
- 29:01through teaching, preaching, and weekly
- 29:03worship by most but most importantly
- 29:07by being Jesus to those living in the
- 29:10nearby communities. Our members here at
- 29:13the Los Cruus Church take scripture
- 29:15seriously and would expect a prospective
- 29:19minister to be thoroughly equipped to
- 29:21engage with God's word to help
- 29:23facilitate our collective efforts to
- 29:26know God and his will for our lives. We
- 29:29view Sunday morning gatherings is just
- 29:31the beginning of a great week intended
- 29:33to serve God and promote his kingdom
- 29:36while each one of us interacts with the
- 29:38greater community.
- 29:40>> Okay.
- 29:41Well, I I thought, you know, I just
- 29:43thought the whole thing was good right
- 29:44there.
- 29:46>> That whole part, that introduction, you
- 29:48know, it felt very engaging. Like I was
- 29:51saying before, very engaging. Um, you
- 29:54know, we're we're we're looking to, you
- 29:56know, engage with people, talk to people
- 29:58just like what you see Sunday morning
- 30:00when we're all arriving, you know, and
- 30:03interacting with the visitors, getting
- 30:05to know people's name. that kind of
- 30:06enthusiasm.
- 30:08>> That's that's what I read out of this.
- 30:10>> That's that's what I
- 30:12>> And so taking that when you go to the
- 30:15store, you go somewhere and kind of
- 30:17having that same feeling and energy as
- 30:20you
- 30:21go through your week.
- 30:23>> That's amaz
- 30:32That's what the guys have.
- 30:35Let's see. Next paragraph about
- 30:37>> and before we start this, I've not been
- 30:39here as long as you guys, so I'm a
- 30:42little bit winging here.
- 30:45>> I do have a question about that uh
- 30:50statement about Sunday morning
- 30:52gatherings beginning a great week. That
- 30:54that's all good. But does it have a
- 30:58connotation that that's all we expect is
- 31:00Sunday mornings?
- 31:03What if the elders decide we're going to
- 31:04start meeting during the midweek again?
- 31:07>> Okay.
- 31:08>> And does that leave an idea that we're
- 31:11only going to meet Sunday mornings?
- 31:12We're not going to meet other than that
- 31:14except for small groups.
- 31:16>> That's a good point.
- 31:17>> And and are we going to just meet Sunday
- 31:20mornings?
- 31:22>> We view our gatherings.
- 31:26>> I I could change that. I I understand
- 31:28what you're saying.
- 31:29>> Yeah. I just don't want to give an
- 31:30implication that
- 31:33We've got you for three hours Sunday
- 31:34morning.
- 31:36>> Yeah, we do our time spent together as
- 31:38preparation for the week ahead of us.
- 31:41>> Yeah, you could do it that way because
- 31:44our time spent together could be small
- 31:47group in the middle of the week, could
- 31:48be any number of ways that we choose to
- 31:51enrich each other to prep ourselves. So
- 31:53that's that's a good point.
- 31:56Can I make a comment about small groups
- 31:59in the minister? If he is going to be
- 32:02minister of the entire congregation,
- 32:05I think he needs to rotate small groups
- 32:09and not be
- 32:12>> I proposed that back at UC. I was
- 32:14telling them Gail and I were going to go
- 32:16from one group to the other. Everything
- 32:18we were proposing makes s
- 32:21>> How long were you?
- 32:23>> We were there for probably Two and a
- 32:25half years was it?
- 32:28>> We were part of the small group.
- 32:29>> We have the deacon of small groups here.
- 32:32So Jason, do you have any input about
- 32:35how to make small groups more effective?
- 32:38>> Um I've been reading the book and giving
- 32:41me actually it's got a lot of good
- 32:43thoughts to it as far as things go. I'm
- 32:45still reading through it so I haven't
- 32:46finished it.
- 32:48Part of the starting point a lot of
- 32:50times is figuring out a goal the group
- 32:53wants to go and focus on figuring out
- 32:56which way does the group want to focus.
- 32:59Is it going to be a community focused
- 33:00group or is it going to be focused on
- 33:02growing individuals so that they can go
- 33:03into the community kind of kind of
- 33:06topics like that it was discussing and
- 33:08then afterwards it was all right now how
- 33:10do we move forward with that? Um
- 33:15and thing that I kind of was talking
- 33:19with AIA about
- 33:25or so about groups. Um,
- 33:30with Darian specifically
- 33:34was it did turn into
- 33:38one thing that was like a cautionary
- 33:39tell I guess though was wherever he was
- 33:43you would take that would be something
- 33:46they handed to him to take over for
- 33:48that. So it' be like one of those things
- 33:49like you're saying if if we do have him
- 33:51on a rotation
- 33:53that it's not necessarily as he's going
- 33:55to take over the small group and run it,
- 33:58but more so that he's going to be
- 34:00involved with the community there to
- 34:03participate.
- 34:05>> Yeah. And get to know everybody.
- 34:06>> Susie, you have a great idea about
- 34:08rotation. I'm going to date myself here
- 34:11and go back several decades,
- 34:15but the first church I served as a
- 34:17deacon in um
- 34:20we had a membership of about 250
- 34:24and that was back in the days when we
- 34:26had visitation programs
- 34:29and we had four visitation groups
- 34:33and we would be groups per quarter
- 34:37and at the end of the quarter we would
- 34:38have
- 34:40four groups come together on a Sunday
- 34:42evening for a meal and a recap of how we
- 34:46had done how many people we had
- 34:49contacted what was the results of it and
- 34:51so forth and and that that was such a a
- 34:56successful program in the 70s but I
- 34:59don't know if it'd work in 2026 but the
- 35:02idea was that every quarter the groups
- 35:07shuffled. You had an elder in each
- 35:10group. You had a deacon in each group.
- 35:12And then the members,
- 35:15it was actually everybody's name and a
- 35:17hat and you drew out. Now, there were
- 35:19some exceptions for uh people that
- 35:22didn't drive or elderly widows and those
- 35:25kind of things that stayed in the same
- 35:27group no matter what because of the
- 35:29relationship and the transportation they
- 35:32had. But overall,
- 35:34every member ended up being in a
- 35:37different group
- 35:39at least two or three times a year.
- 35:42Well, that enabled all the groups to get
- 35:45to know each other and the other groups.
- 35:48What we reading the documents that's on
- 35:52the shared of the history and what this
- 35:56church was back in 2020.
- 36:00Um, we got the groups we had six years
- 36:03ago.
- 36:05We have the exact same groups
- 36:08>> and that they're good, but if you want
- 36:11unity within the body, there needs to be
- 36:13a time more than once a year when all
- 36:16the groups come together and share
- 36:18what's going on. That's a suggestion
- 36:22and
- 36:23it it makes a difference on building
- 36:27relationships within the church and
- 36:30within
- 36:32the groups by getting fresh blood.
- 36:36>> I made a note here about the rotation
- 36:38that the minister would go through but
- 36:40also I've got this piece here able to
- 36:44innovate explore ways I could expand
- 36:47that to address that help to help to
- 36:52improve the
- 36:54>> facilitate facilitate the growth
- 36:57>> growth and maturity with each other
- 36:58>> small groups. Yeah.
- 37:00>> Yeah. I I've got an example of this. I'm
- 37:02not church, but I think it goes along
- 37:05with being very people engaged in what
- 37:09we call being a presence. Um, you know,
- 37:13people will look to the minister as a as
- 37:17a guide, as
- 37:21and the more their their engagement
- 37:25with people brings that sense of
- 37:28belonging and
- 37:30that caring and people will will feel
- 37:33that when that person spends time with
- 37:35you.
- 37:37The the example I have is over the next
- 37:40two days um this is like going to happen
- 37:44in the next two days starting tomorrow.
- 37:47Um the group that I work with at work um
- 37:51we have teams across the country.
- 37:54So um in my position as a regional
- 37:57manager, my 12 supervisors are gathering
- 38:01their immediate teams together for a
- 38:04meeting. Okay.
- 38:07Now
- 38:09it's one time a year where they actually
- 38:11get to see each other all their their
- 38:14their peers because they all work in
- 38:17different towns and they don't go to
- 38:18they just are by themselves in a store.
- 38:21there there is other people in that
- 38:23store but they're not part of their
- 38:24specific group. So they work uh
- 38:27individually in the store communicate
- 38:30through basically Zoom calls text
- 38:33message and other but tomorrow and
- 38:35Wednesday they're going to see each
- 38:37other face to face.
- 38:40The other thing about, you know, being
- 38:44hopefully a good leader and a good
- 38:46example and bringing in that
- 38:49recognition, partnership, and engagement
- 38:51is for me to get out there and go visit
- 38:55with each of those as many of those
- 38:57teams as I can. And so tomorrow I leave
- 39:01at 8:00 in the morning for truth of
- 39:03consequences to meet with one of that
- 39:07district's group um for a few hours.
- 39:10It's a 4 hour It's a 4 hour meeting, but
- 39:12I'm only going to be able to be there
- 39:14for a couple maybe a little bit longer
- 39:17and then drive to Kasagrron. So I can be
- 39:21in Kasagrron
- 39:23Wednesday morning to meet with two other
- 39:25teams and then drive that same day to
- 39:28Fountain Hills to meet with another
- 39:29team. I have 12 supervisors and 143 team
- 39:33members under me. They may not see me
- 39:37for six, eight, nine months, but here's
- 39:39an opportunity for me to make the effort
- 39:42to show my team, for the minister to
- 39:45show the members that
- 39:48you're important. We care about you
- 39:51because I'm driving all over creation
- 39:54intentionally. I'm making this effort to
- 39:57drive for tears to here to there to
- 40:01meet with you because it's important
- 40:03because I care about you and the work
- 40:05you do in the store. And I want to
- 40:06recognize that. And I feel it's the same
- 40:08kind of thing when you talk about
- 40:11rotating around. You go to meet the
- 40:13people. You go to engage with them and
- 40:17share with them because They're
- 40:19important.
- 40:21You care. You complete care and they
- 40:23care about you. It goes both ways. And
- 40:26it excites people when those things
- 40:30happen. And so, you know, sometimes
- 40:33because it's work, you know, it's all
- 40:34about, you know, productivity and, you
- 40:37know, recognition and having great
- 40:38teams. But it applies the same way. We
- 40:41all get motivated by each other when we
- 40:44see each other. when we see somebody
- 40:47doing something good makes me feel good.
- 40:50I want to be part of it. I want to be,
- 40:52you know, engaged with that. And so I
- 40:55think putting those examples in makes it
- 40:58a big deal.
- 41:01Not that they run anything. I'm not
- 41:02going to go there and run the meeting.
- 41:04You know, I'm going to sit in the back
- 41:06row and eat donuts and drink coffee with
- 41:07the rest of the team. You know, I'm not
- 41:10there to run the meeting. I'm not, you
- 41:12know, like you're saying, afraid David
- 41:13gonna go take over or he should have No,
- 41:16I'm there just to be there to to support
- 41:20the team members. The supervisor is the
- 41:23one that runs
- 41:27as a family of God,
- 41:30brothers and sisters by the blood of
- 41:34Christ.
- 41:36How do we act with our earthly
- 41:40siblings? We take turns going to each
- 41:43other's house.
- 41:45Some people
- 41:48either that or we have
- 41:51communal
- 41:53um family gatherings
- 41:56which we do have fellowship lunchons
- 42:01but we need to look at ourselves more as
- 42:06a family.
- 42:08Not disjointed members of this group.
- 42:13We're a family.
- 42:15And if we want to spend eternity with
- 42:17our heavenly father, we need to start
- 42:20acting like a family,
- 42:24not just individuals.
- 42:29That's why
- 42:32section
- 42:38along.
- 42:42So the second paragraph
- 42:44>> all right here we go about the church in
- 42:46Los Cruis. We are a community of
- 42:48believers committed to the gospel of
- 42:50Jesus and all its implications for our
- 42:53lives as we engage with our neighbors
- 42:56from surrounding communities.
- 42:59We regard our neighbors as import as
- 43:02important because God continually shapes
- 43:04us to love first.
- 43:07We see ourselves as part of a larger
- 43:09kingdom inclusive of believers from
- 43:12around the world who acknowledge Jesus
- 43:14as Lord and King. In addition to meeting
- 43:17or prayer, study study and worship at a
- 43:21formal building on Valley Drive, we also
- 43:25needed small groups to promote greater
- 43:28involvement in each other's lives and
- 43:31provide a welcoming space for guests to
- 43:33explore what God has in store for them.
- 43:38>> So that's meant to say something about
- 43:41what the Los Church of Christ experience
- 43:43would be for him. He wants to know what
- 43:47would be like that's meant to
- 43:48communicate what it would be like
- 43:53and you guys probably know better than I
- 43:56would look like a reasonable
- 43:58approximation.
- 43:59>> Well, just taking from Sunday's example,
- 44:01you know, reaching out and took the bus
- 44:04to go rescue mission brought three
- 44:07people back. One walked up. They engaged
- 44:10in Bible study and two of them went
- 44:13forward. able to
- 44:18>> Edwin
- 44:22and
- 44:23you know
- 44:28and and lovingly everybody reached out
- 44:32and and gave them a big pray for them
- 44:35and you know I hope that they would go
- 44:37back and you know feel feel comforted
- 44:40and loved and you know they got a hard a
- 44:43hard life, you know, it's a challenge
- 44:46probably sometimes things we don't
- 44:48understand, but you know, God can take
- 44:50care of all of that for them. You know,
- 44:52the things that we can't do, but we did
- 44:55what we could do. We did what we could
- 44:58do at the time they weren't in front of
- 45:00us.
- 45:02I think, you know, I think that's
- 45:03important. You know, we did what we
- 45:05could when they were standing right
- 45:06before us. We didn't just ignore them as
- 45:10they got off the bus, you know, and just
- 45:13you know, went about our business
- 45:15talking to everybody we knew. We were
- 45:17sitting outside talking with them,
- 45:19sharing coffee and donuts and went into
- 45:21a Bible study and sat down with somebody
- 45:24and then they went into worship and some
- 45:26of them sat next to somebody else and
- 45:29then they were able to share. I thought
- 45:31that was that was very very for
- 45:34everybody not just them but for
- 45:36everybody else that was
- 45:40characterized
- 45:48minister I would ask you to welcome
- 45:52that a little bit more what is it you
- 45:55really do makes guests feel
- 46:01So basically just have to be prepared to
- 46:04use this seg
- 46:11the critical parts here.
- 46:14>> Okay. Key attributes of the prospective
- 46:17ministry.
- 46:18>> Now we're talking about character
- 46:22>> compelled by God's word to explore
- 46:25scripture and unpack it message for
- 46:28others.
- 46:30enjoys engaging with people and has a
- 46:34heart for those who are lost and
- 46:35struggled.
- 46:36>> That's something I heard loud and clear
- 46:38last time that you all wanted somebody
- 46:40who was a person. Remember Jason talking
- 46:43about that as well. So that puts the
- 46:47prospective minister on. Yeah. I can't
- 46:51can't be someone who wants to hold open
- 46:52my office and close the door and no one
- 46:54knows I'm here. rather they've got to be
- 46:57working the room to say work the room
- 47:00all around meeting the different guests
- 47:03and I I've been using work the word
- 47:05guest rather than visitor because guest
- 47:08sounds to me like someone who is more
- 47:10value than a visitor
- 47:12>> somebody that you invited me to
- 47:14>> exactly that's right I don't call
- 47:16someone you had a good point someone who
- 47:19comes into my home I don't visitor
- 47:26The the one thing that I'm I'm
- 47:30I I'm puzzled about is where would we
- 47:34put down the
- 47:38the biblical beliefs that our church
- 47:41believes?
- 47:43There's churches at Christ
- 47:46Collegees on out there. I'm assuming
- 47:48that's where we're primarily going to
- 47:50push. Uh but there's other
- 47:54universities on out there that that have
- 47:56ministry. Where are we going to put down
- 47:58here so that we understand
- 48:00>> what are our core beliefs? Who are we?
- 48:02>> Yeah. Well, from the standpoint of of a
- 48:05believer, is it a baptized believer? Uh
- 48:08I mean, where where where are we going
- 48:10to is it in an interview process of
- 48:14asking them a list of questions or or is
- 48:17it in here? If we're going to keep it to
- 48:19one page, we can't be all inclusive.
- 48:21>> All right. Let me answer that.
- 48:23>> Okay.
- 48:23>> What we did before is we did go to a
- 48:27second step where we're just on on the
- 48:30verge of phone interviews and those very
- 48:33same questions were put down and we
- 48:35would talk to the person on the phone.
- 48:38Well, in fact, I still remember this.
- 48:40What do you think about the role of
- 48:41women in the church?
- 48:43So, you have some questions and you make
- 48:46sure you get that buttoned up before you
- 48:48say you're hired. or even they can come
- 48:52here.
- 48:52>> Exactly. So that's why the phone
- 48:54interview was after
- 48:56>> that's a pretty hot topic religiously
- 48:59right now.
- 49:00>> It is.
- 49:00>> Yeah. Because Pepperdine has
- 49:03worships Pepperdine in California
- 49:08has a service where the women officiate
- 49:11and preach
- 49:12>> and serve communion and
- 49:16>> Yeah. Well, so we had a long list of
- 49:18questions. you answered. I was just
- 49:20curious where we were going to do that.
- 49:21>> We would need several pages to do what
- 49:23we did by phone
- 49:24>> because we're keeping it one page. So,
- 49:25you can't put all that down there.
- 49:27>> You're trying to get somebody interested
- 49:29enough to to get their foot in the door
- 49:31and then we go after them.
- 49:36>> HAIL TO THE WALL.
- 49:38>> YOU'RE RECORDING.
- 49:40>> DAVID, OKAY. I do have a question. Part
- 49:43of your statement was that we are going
- 49:47to be going to universities to look for
- 49:49a preacher.
- 49:51That's not where I'm going to look.
- 49:54>> No.
- 49:54>> Our our congregation
- 49:58is not conducive to a man right out of
- 50:01college for his first work. We need my
- 50:05opinion at least someone that's got 10
- 50:08plus years experience in a church
- 50:11ministry with an eldership
- 50:15to come here and meet our needs. A young
- 50:19man right out of college,
- 50:22he he may have the biblical knowledge. I
- 50:25don't know if he has the biblical
- 50:27understanding.
- 50:29There's a difference.
- 50:31And then he doesn't have the people
- 50:33experience
- 50:36at 24, 22, 26 years old. That's someone
- 50:41that would be nearing 35.
- 50:44>> We're really not going to a college goes
- 50:49much.
- 50:49>> Yeah. I think we go through you can you
- 50:52can
- 50:54>> you can advertise at university because
- 50:56I think a lot of the preachers that are
- 50:59looking to move go to websites for
- 51:03Harding or OCU or
- 51:08Abalene or some of these other
- 51:09universities that are Christian Oregon
- 51:12and they look at prospective places to
- 51:15work. But in our ad that we're going to
- 51:18put out, I think it should include that
- 51:21we want an experienced minister 10 years
- 51:24plus.
- 51:29>> Yeah. Preferred that when we get to the
- 51:31preferred qualifications, we're going to
- 51:32put that in there. One thing I will say
- 51:34though, Roger, some some ministers go
- 51:38out and work for five, 10 years, then
- 51:40they go back and get a master's degree.
- 51:42And you want them to see this.
- 51:44>> Exactly.
- 51:45>> You do. So
- 51:46>> yeah, I'm not opposed to advertising at
- 51:48the university,
- 51:49>> but I think we need to have some kind of
- 51:52information in there about what our
- 51:54expectations are.
- 51:55>> When we get to the preferred
- 51:56qualifications, let's let's exactly what
- 51:59we want.
- 52:00>> Five, 10,
- 52:02>> I would say five because 10 seems about
- 52:06much
- 52:06>> for this here. Was this the one or say
- 52:10they listed it as five years for
- 52:12ministry? Everything in there is just a
- 52:14guide.
- 52:16>> Everything that the elders put in that
- 52:17thing is a guide.
- 52:19>> We can't There's nothing in there that
- 52:21we can't rewrite.
- 52:23>> Well, I think 10 years is just a bit
- 52:25much because I think we tried that
- 52:26before and we've got nobody at all that
- 52:29meet those requirements. So, five years
- 52:32plus
- 52:32>> I think five years plus would be better
- 52:34than having it say 10 years because most
- 52:37likely you'll find more likely
- 52:39candidates that way versus 10 years. Not
- 52:42many. It'll go for 10 years.
- 52:45>> Let's think about how long he
- 52:48>> And was this his first job?
- 52:50>> Yeah.
- 52:51>> I wasn't here.
- 52:52>> He had been a youth director, but he had
- 52:54not been a full
- 52:55>> I wasn't here for those five years. But
- 52:57can you tell me something about the arc
- 52:59of his development and growth during
- 53:01those five years? Was there some change
- 53:03in him?
- 53:04>> He was, this is Winro's opinion.
- 53:08uh he he was just coming into his own
- 53:14within the last year. Jason's going to
- 53:16have a little bit different
- 53:18understanding because he I think he was
- 53:21the closest from a peer group
- 53:22perspective, but I saw
- 53:26nothing but milk of the word
- 53:29in the first three years and then I
- 53:33thought that I was seeing a transition
- 53:35of a lot more thought provoking, not
- 53:38there yet, but a lot more
- 53:39thoughtprovoking
- 53:41and with the right mentorship, I think
- 53:43he would have he would been coming into
- 53:47his own. That's my personal thought.
- 53:50>> Well, that tells me that maybe you want
- 53:52to say a minimum of five years.
- 53:55>> So, that would encourage some 10 years.
- 53:58I' really got really got to shoe in
- 54:00here.
- 54:03>> Let's see.
- 54:04>> We're still on key.
- 54:06>> Enjoys engaging with people and has a
- 54:08heart for those who are lost and
- 54:09struggling. A good listener able to
- 54:11convey to others what they are that they
- 54:14are val valued considers the lost
- 54:16Christian church to be an extension of
- 54:18their own family.
- 54:21>> Yeah. So those those bullet points were
- 54:23meant to zero in on the character the
- 54:26heart maturity of the individual
- 54:29belonging acceptance.
- 54:32>> I don't have a problem with that.
- 54:35>> The reverse did not happen for our first
- 54:38two ministers. What do you mean this?
- 54:40Our church family had nothing but
- 54:43problems. And it only takes 10% of the
- 54:45congregation to let it be known that
- 54:48they didn't like an individual for
- 54:50whatever reason. Petty, no, I'm serious.
- 54:54This is something that to me
- 54:58uh
- 55:04to me as a church family, we did not
- 55:06live up to the reciprocal of including
- 55:09them as a family because we and it only
- 55:12takes a couple of bad apples to to turn
- 55:15the barrel sour. But uh that's something
- 55:20that
- 55:21is not here. But uh our this
- 55:24congregation uh did not treat certain
- 55:28people did not treat them well. The
- 55:30first two preachers,
- 55:32ministers, whatever uh very well and it
- 55:35it it it
- 55:38grew and expanded.
- 55:40>> May I offer something in there? It's a
- 55:43two-way street.
- 55:44>> Oh, yes. Yes.
- 55:46some of the people that were turned off
- 55:48by degree. If he had approached them
- 55:51lovingly,
- 55:53which at times he did not,
- 55:57and tried to make amends and unify the
- 56:00situation
- 56:02so often he didn't, but I think that was
- 56:05his youth.
- 56:08Well, I'm talking about within the first
- 56:11month, we had two ladies come on up and
- 56:14tell him basically to his face that you
- 56:17need to lose weight. You are not a very
- 56:19good representative to No, I'm serious.
- 56:22It and that's what I'm referring to.
- 56:26>> We
- 56:29that I'm just giving you the reverse was
- 56:32not happening. So hopefully that's
- 56:34something we need to pray about for our
- 56:36congregation to be an awful lot more
- 56:40loving from a Christian family
- 56:42perspective.
- 56:43>> You know, a good way to help critique
- 56:45what I've got here.
- 56:46>> I think this I think that's
- 56:48okay. Let me ask you this. A good way to
- 56:50critique this is to ask ourselves, are
- 56:53there some items here? There's four
- 56:56bullet points. Are there items here that
- 56:58Darian do not meet?
- 57:01I'm just curious to know are we where
- 57:03are we setting the bar here? We setting
- 57:05a bar here that
- 57:08>> well I think it
- 57:10I'll I'll give you my thought enjoys
- 57:13engaging with people
- 57:17my perspective is Derry engaged with
- 57:19wanted to and let the rest of it.
- 57:23So
- 57:24that can be all of us, you know, we
- 57:27associate with certain people, we don't
- 57:29associate, we accept different people,
- 57:32whatever. So I think we just got to be
- 57:34careful uh in talking about what you're
- 57:36saying and also
- 57:40>> who takes the initiative in building a
- 57:42relationship. You can't put it all on
- 57:44the minister. No,
- 57:45>> you have to own 100% of it. He own, you
- 57:49know, there's no 50/50 in this. It's
- 57:50100%. you own 100% of that relationship
- 57:55if you expected to grow. So as much as
- 57:59say Darien didn't do something, what
- 58:02didn't you do?
- 58:04>> What didn't you do which is totally
- 58:07outside of what we're doing?
- 58:09>> You know, and I think that answers your
- 58:11question or plays into it is we probably
- 58:14failed or we did fail just as much as
- 58:17somebody else may have. We own 100% not
- 58:2120, not 30, not 50, not 70, 100%. 100%
- 58:25of building that relationship. And so I
- 58:28think that's where we go into it. And we
- 58:29got to be careful
- 58:31back to my suggestion of getting someone
- 58:34that's more experienced and more mature
- 58:37>> and more mature in the work, not just in
- 58:43emotional and and well careerwise, but
- 58:47they actually It's it's one thing to
- 58:49have Bible knowledge. It's another thing
- 58:52to have the application of the Bible
- 58:55and that's individual
- 58:58is going to understand their role.
- 59:00>> And I think
- 59:01>> we keep talking about wanting someone
- 59:03who's going to reach the youth and so we
- 59:05should get someone younger so the youth
- 59:08I don't think that's the best way having
- 59:11worked with a lot of youth personally.
- 59:13I I don't think the younger people who
- 59:16don't yet have the maturity and the
- 59:18understanding and and the depth of I
- 59:21don't think they're doing the best job
- 59:22with the young people.
- 59:24>> It's the David Haroldson who do a great
- 59:26job.
- 59:27>> They love it.
- 59:28>> Yeah. And you know, and we've seen that
- 59:30over and
- 59:31>> David Har,
- 59:34>> you know, he was there when my kids were
- 59:35little, you know,
- 59:37>> still there and they still love it.
- 59:38>> It's David Harelson. Yeah.
- 59:42Yeah. that is he embraced that at a very
- 59:45young age and he never stopped embracing
- 59:48youth and I don't know him that I've met
- 59:51him I've seen
- 59:52>> but if you talk about you know somebody
- 59:54if you know you talk about all this by
- 59:57it's a person like a Harelson
- 1:00:00>> it's a person like a Harelson
- 1:00:02>> you know um
- 1:00:04>> that that's all it is is he he's just
- 1:00:07built that way and he doesn't let the
- 1:00:10other
- 1:00:10>> suggestion that we should take from you
- 1:00:13the rest of this as we go through it. We
- 1:00:16should be looking forward to the
- 1:00:17candidate, not who's been here and what
- 1:00:22>> we don't need to look back at at we
- 1:00:26don't need to compare Darian's
- 1:00:27performance to anything that's on your
- 1:00:29feet.
- 1:00:30>> No, we need to be looking forward to
- 1:00:32what we're looking for to establish
- 1:00:35that.
- 1:00:36>> Well, I guess I was just concerned that
- 1:00:38I was setting the barosible
- 1:00:41These are attributes the jail and I have
- 1:00:43seen in a number of ministers all of
- 1:00:45them.
- 1:00:46>> So I believe it's doable but I didn't
- 1:00:48want to set things up for failure.
- 1:00:51>> Well I to Roger's point I think these
- 1:00:54are kind of must have myself.
- 1:00:55>> You want
- 1:00:56>> I think these are mustave attributes.
- 1:00:59>> Yes.
- 1:01:00>> Yeah. I agree.
- 1:01:01>> So I wouldn't want to water them down. I
- 1:01:02was going to ask you if there's
- 1:01:03something that when you look at these
- 1:01:06see something missing.
- 1:01:11Is there anything else under key
- 1:01:13attributes that you think really belongs
- 1:01:15in there?
- 1:01:18I remember you talking about how you
- 1:01:19wanted this family connection back and
- 1:01:22forth. That's why that fourth bullet
- 1:01:25point is there. We did talk about
- 1:01:28listening, engaging in the people. Of
- 1:01:30course, the first bullet point is there
- 1:01:32because we do take, like I said, we do
- 1:01:35take seriously scripture. How do I um
- 1:01:42how do you say that in the reverse?
- 1:01:45>> That considers the Las Cruisers church
- 1:01:47to the extension of their own family.
- 1:01:50>> How do we say that in there that you
- 1:01:52know we are looking for the minister to
- 1:01:56be an extension of
- 1:02:01>> you know we don't we don't want you know
- 1:02:03yeah we want you to think of us as We
- 1:02:06want to think of you as God.
- 1:02:08>> I want to be an extension of our family
- 1:02:11>> except for him. You know, you know,
- 1:02:14you're the evil step brother.
- 1:02:16>> Because it is.
- 1:02:17>> And it comes a point in time.
- 1:02:19>> Yeah. It's about time you smiled the
- 1:02:20whole time you were here.
- 1:02:22>> Because a point in time was, you know,
- 1:02:24this is a job or is it a part of the
- 1:02:26family? We don't treat
- 1:02:28>> it's not.
- 1:02:29>> It's difficult to treat somebody as a
- 1:02:32family member versus as an employee.
- 1:02:34>> It's hard. And now I'm just throwing
- 1:02:37that out
- 1:02:37>> because we always reference back to the
- 1:02:39fact that we pay them that makes them an
- 1:02:41employee
- 1:02:41>> to do our job.
- 1:02:43>> They, you know, they need to do their
- 1:02:45job because there's a job we need to do.
- 1:02:48And you know, maybe in all of this, we
- 1:02:50write our own job description. You know,
- 1:02:52what are we supposed to do as a church
- 1:02:57to help the minister be successful?
- 1:02:59>> But I think I think that's the the key.
- 1:03:03And I'm referencing David Harelson.
- 1:03:05That's the key why he stayed there so
- 1:03:08long was that they viewed him as an
- 1:03:11extension of the church family
- 1:03:14and
- 1:03:17and uh I think that's one of the reasons
- 1:03:19why he stayed there so long.
- 1:03:21>> I like that word. I'm
- 1:03:24>> that's all I got from this.
- 1:03:26>> That's perfect.
- 1:03:28>> Okay. Uh roles and responsibilities.
- 1:03:31preach a lesson on most Sundays, but
- 1:03:33with occasional support from members.
- 1:03:36You know, that was one thing I've heard
- 1:03:38uh multiple times about do we need a
- 1:03:41preacher? Do we need a minister? Are the
- 1:03:44men of the congregation need a fine job?
- 1:03:46So, let's just go with that. Um I was
- 1:03:50having a discussion with Brian Wilson
- 1:03:53yesterday
- 1:03:55about that very line and you know, he
- 1:03:58was talking about
- 1:04:00minister and how do we keep the men
- 1:04:03involved? I said, "You have to set a
- 1:04:05week aside.
- 1:04:06>> You have to set time aside specifically
- 1:04:08to have somebody else pitch in. You
- 1:04:11know, you
- 1:04:14if you don't plan for it and just do it
- 1:04:17whenever an emergency arises or
- 1:04:20something, it's going to lose all its
- 1:04:25>> It's going to lose.
- 1:04:28>> It was planned. It didn't feel like it.
- 1:04:31Well,
- 1:04:32>> well, if we don't do this, then we're
- 1:04:35going to stifle the growth of the
- 1:04:37individual men.
- 1:04:40>> And that's why I say, you know, um I
- 1:04:42think this, you know, that's that's one
- 1:04:44thing the elders want to make sure that
- 1:04:45the men stay involved. So,
- 1:04:49>> Darian had four Sundays a year that he
- 1:04:52could plan to not be involved.
- 1:04:53>> Oh, they need we need to do it more than
- 1:04:55four Sundays a year. And see, the beauty
- 1:04:57of that is that
- 1:04:58>> I'm a little concerned about getting
- 1:05:00consistency in building the
- 1:05:02relationship. If you don't let the man
- 1:05:04that's trying to engage the
- 1:05:06congregation, not being the one to Well,
- 1:05:10I'm not trying I'm not saying you need
- 1:05:11to do it every other week. I'm saying
- 1:05:13like once a month, once, you know, once
- 1:05:15every two months, but you have a good
- 1:05:18rotation and you have you have it posted
- 1:05:21>> as a an event. It's a it happens. This
- 1:05:24is what we're doing. The other way is
- 1:05:25just whatever he's got a meeting to go
- 1:05:27to.
- 1:05:28>> It wasn't it wasn't
- 1:05:30>> require when I was in there.
- 1:05:33>> When I was in the eldership with Derek
- 1:05:37at the beginning of the year, he planned
- 1:05:39his two weeks of vacation at the
- 1:05:42beginning of the year. And he planned
- 1:05:45his two weeks and we'll call it a
- 1:05:48sbatical
- 1:05:49that he would spend that planning his
- 1:05:52next six months. plans of sermons and so
- 1:05:56forth and he would not be in the court
- 1:05:59and he did that four times a year. Well,
- 1:06:02if you do that once a quarter, that
- 1:06:03means one out of 11 he's not there. One
- 1:06:06out of 12, he's only there 11 sermons in
- 1:06:09a row. And so if you get less than that,
- 1:06:13there's a danger in losing
- 1:06:17what 52 weeks
- 1:06:20four times.
- 1:06:21>> Yeah.
- 1:06:23Well, by the time you add in the four
- 1:06:25times and then two weeks for vacation,
- 1:06:27we're talking six now.
- 1:06:28>> No, they're covering while he's on
- 1:06:30vacation. So, there's only four
- 1:06:34once a quarter. There's only four
- 1:06:35quarters.
- 1:06:37>> So, four out of three is not much. He
- 1:06:40took his two weeks vacation whenever
- 1:06:43he wanted to. But then he also took
- 1:06:46usually a week in the in the first part
- 1:06:48of the year and the week of middle part
- 1:06:50year
- 1:06:51>> that he asked to not be in the office
- 1:06:53and not be on
- 1:06:56>> to do his planning.
- 1:06:58>> Okay.
- 1:06:59>> And so those took him out. Now Darian
- 1:07:02missed a lot more than that
- 1:07:04>> because he was frequently ill.
- 1:07:09And I
- 1:07:12>> I don't
- 1:07:14I don't have any idea how many pulpit
- 1:07:16Sundays he missed, but it was a lot. It
- 1:07:18was enough that I felt like we as a
- 1:07:21congregation didn't get consistent.
- 1:07:23>> Well, I think you know,
- 1:07:25>> well, that should be something we have
- 1:07:26to be prepared to answer right here.
- 1:07:31I think I think the candidate
- 1:07:35>> will if they have these attributes you
- 1:07:38describe,
- 1:07:40>> they're going to want to be
- 1:07:41>> I would hope so.
- 1:07:42>> I would hope that their personal time
- 1:07:45they're going to take off and and and
- 1:07:49most of the congregations I've been in,
- 1:07:51we offer two weeks a year for them to
- 1:07:55attend conferences or seminars at one of
- 1:07:58the universities or to go get back. We
- 1:08:02offered that. So in Darian's situation,
- 1:08:05it wasn't to go do that. It was to have
- 1:08:07personal time for he he used those two
- 1:08:10weeks in a different way.
- 1:08:13>> But but I think that it's important that
- 1:08:15we offer
- 1:08:17anybody that's in ministry time to go
- 1:08:20get fed.
- 1:08:23>> A couple things that was in his contract
- 1:08:26also.
- 1:08:26>> Yeah. A couple things that I've learned
- 1:08:29helping Susie in the office is
- 1:08:34and and you know reviewing the bulletin
- 1:08:36and things like that. We lack structure.
- 1:08:40We lack um
- 1:08:43u structure um deliberate communication.
- 1:08:48Um you know we weren't nobody knew when
- 1:08:51an elders meeting was going to happen.
- 1:08:53You know it just happened. Um there were
- 1:08:56no deacons meetings, there were no um
- 1:08:59town halls, there was lack of structure.
- 1:09:03It just kind of whenever somebody needed
- 1:09:05to have something, they called for and
- 1:09:07that was it. If you didn't know about
- 1:09:08it, too bad. So trying to lay out some
- 1:09:11of the structure. Everybody knows from
- 1:09:13reading the bulletin when the next
- 1:09:15elders meeting is, the next deacons
- 1:09:17meeting is, the next town hall meeting.
- 1:09:22That's all deliberate to add structure.
- 1:09:26Somebody says, "Well, you know, we got
- 1:09:27to do this, we got to do that, but we're
- 1:09:29waiting for this to happen." Well, you
- 1:09:31can't always sit around and wait for
- 1:09:33something to happen. You plan the
- 1:09:36meeting. If nobody shows up, nobody
- 1:09:38shows up and then you plan the next one
- 1:09:40and then maybe somebody and I think
- 1:09:42that's what you got to start. You got to
- 1:09:44have that structure behind it. And so
- 1:09:47telling everybody this is the weeks that
- 1:09:49they're going to preach, you know, and
- 1:09:52these are the weeks that he's going to
- 1:09:53be taking off. Uh bring that structure
- 1:09:56and just not whenever and nobody not
- 1:09:59tell anybody. I don't think it, you
- 1:10:00know, it's probably getting out there on
- 1:10:02on the weeds, but uh we have it here
- 1:10:05that he's going to support from the
- 1:10:06members. So I think that that adds
- 1:10:09enough.
- 1:10:10>> If I'm a prospecting minister, I'm going
- 1:10:11to ask you what exactly does that mean?
- 1:10:14Well, then you start to flush that out.
- 1:10:16You see what their expectations are,
- 1:10:17what our expect,
- 1:10:21>> right? All right. Joining a rotation of
- 1:10:23adult teaching during Sunday morning
- 1:10:25classes.
- 1:10:26>> Yeah. Again, it doesn't really say how
- 1:10:27much. It just says you're expected to
- 1:10:29teach.
- 1:10:29>> Yes.
- 1:10:30>> I I would leave the rotation out.
- 1:10:32>> Okay.
- 1:10:33>> Because I think as a congregation and at
- 1:10:36different times, we've had two adult
- 1:10:38Bible classes at the same time. But I
- 1:10:41think it's really important that the
- 1:10:43preacher in a teaching environment on a
- 1:10:47regular basis. Now could he take a
- 1:10:49quarter off? Sure.
- 1:10:51But I think the expectation needs to be
- 1:10:54preaching every Sunday and teaching
- 1:10:56every Sunday. Okay.
- 1:10:57>> Instead of if there is a rotation, it's
- 1:11:00for an additional class.
- 1:11:02>> So can I say contribute to adult
- 1:11:04teaching, contribute to
- 1:11:09I'll work on I know what you mean. You
- 1:11:11want to you want to make sure it's not
- 1:11:13like I can be out three quarters here
- 1:11:15and
- 1:11:16>> right
- 1:11:18>> I'll work on that.
- 1:11:19>> Um
- 1:11:21somebody brought up I think you brought
- 1:11:24Sunday evening Wednesday night
- 1:11:27the elders you know we don't do it some
- 1:11:31of
- 1:11:34>> um lack of
- 1:11:37you call lack of interest lack of
- 1:11:43Why don't we
- 1:11:50>> even
- 1:11:51that all come out of co
- 1:11:54>> go to preco what what did you do before
- 1:11:58co
- 1:11:59>> well even before then it was Sunday
- 1:12:01morning Sunday night Wednesday night
- 1:12:03>> right
- 1:12:04>> should
- 1:12:06we revisit that should we the elders
- 1:12:10about it. Is there a time we'll ever go
- 1:12:11back to that or now this the new pattern
- 1:12:14that we follow and nothing is to be
- 1:12:16said?
- 1:12:16>> Well, just keep in mind that when we did
- 1:12:18Sunday evening, Wednesday night, there
- 1:12:20wasn't any small groups then.
- 1:12:22>> I know we would we were there every
- 1:12:25Sunday evening, every Wednesday night
- 1:12:27and
- 1:12:31what does your book say about certain
- 1:12:32days?
- 1:12:36You plan the meeting and people that
- 1:12:38want to participate show up. If you plan
- 1:12:41a Wednesday evening assembly at the
- 1:12:43building, there's people that show up
- 1:12:45here, it won't be the same number that
- 1:12:48show up. Oh, no. And if you plan a
- 1:12:50Wednesday or a Thursday or whatever
- 1:12:52midweek that you want to plan,
- 1:12:56if you have food available,
- 1:13:00spiritual and physical, people show up
- 1:13:05and
- 1:13:08>> I mean it.
- 1:13:09>> Well, I just all I was saying we ever
- 1:13:11put the feed trough out, the hogs are
- 1:13:14going to come. I suggest you work this
- 1:13:16out before interview.
- 1:13:19>> I wonder if these are questions, right,
- 1:13:21that should be I guess as to the
- 1:13:24congregation in the survey, right? These
- 1:13:26are things
- 1:13:27like what are what does the congregation
- 1:13:30want, right? Do they do they even want
- 1:13:34Wednesdays? Do they even want
- 1:13:36that regard? We're having a difficult
- 1:13:38time other than the adult class. We had
- 1:13:41no youth last Sunday. We had no children
- 1:13:45on Sunday. We had two little kids back
- 1:13:48there that uh
- 1:13:51with moms back in the nursery and we had
- 1:13:55no youth and no children
- 1:13:57>> last night on vacation.
- 1:13:58>> Pardon?
- 1:14:00>> Well, the little kids, a lot of them are
- 1:14:01on vacation.
- 1:14:02>> No, that's true. That's true.
- 1:14:05>> Jason, do you feel like there's more
- 1:14:07people out there that don't want to be
- 1:14:08more than one?
- 1:14:11I don't think it's necessarily maybe
- 1:14:13some do, right? Maybe some don't want
- 1:14:16me, but I think it's more so that they
- 1:14:21and that goes more to a personal level,
- 1:14:23right? Onto what they commit themselves
- 1:14:24to,
- 1:14:25>> right?
- 1:14:26>> That's your key, right? They commit
- 1:14:27themselves to these things and I cannot
- 1:14:31make these meetings or these gatherings
- 1:14:33because I've committed our kids to a
- 1:14:36multitude of whatever and we can't show
- 1:14:38up because we're too tired or whatever
- 1:14:40the case may be. Right. We have so many
- 1:14:42distractions nowadays.
- 1:14:44>> Yeah.
- 1:14:44>> With with the mobility and such like
- 1:14:47that, the technology and such. We have
- 1:14:50parents
- 1:14:53that the family structure is broken down
- 1:14:56and the kids are saying, "No, I'm not
- 1:14:58going to go to Sunday school." We have
- 1:15:01three sets of parents that cannot get
- 1:15:04their kids to Sunday school
- 1:15:08and they're lucky if they get them to
- 1:15:10church.
- 1:15:11So it,
- 1:15:13you know, the devil is working.
- 1:15:15>> The devil is being very good. But the if
- 1:15:19you break it down,
- 1:15:21we have 52 meetings a year in this
- 1:15:25congregation. That's it.
- 1:15:28Other than individuals, small groups
- 1:15:31that will have anywhere from
- 1:15:34six to 12 at any meeting
- 1:15:39>> and probably have six more than they
- 1:15:41have 12.
- 1:15:46>> Let me ask you this. Is it possible to
- 1:15:48do both small groups in the old style of
- 1:15:51Sunday night, Wednesday night
- 1:15:52simultaneously? Is is it one or the
- 1:15:54other?
- 1:15:55>> I think you can do both because all the
- 1:15:57small groups there's only one or two
- 1:16:00groups that meet on Sunday night.
- 1:16:03>> On Sunday,
- 1:16:05>> which one are y'all?
- 1:16:09>> Yeah, them and then David's group and I
- 1:16:12think the other groups are meeting other
- 1:16:14times during the week.
- 1:16:17supposed to be
- 1:16:18>> the youth meets Wednesday night.
- 1:16:20>> Yeah, the youth Wednesday.
- 1:16:22>> But back in the good old days, but back
- 1:16:25in the the days prior co
- 1:16:29there was no such thing as small groups.
- 1:16:31>> I shouldn't say that because when we
- 1:16:32left
- 1:16:34>> Yeah.
- 1:16:36>> In Ohio, we did we did Sunday morning,
- 1:16:39Sunday night, Wednesday night. I'll take
- 1:16:41I'll take that and ask them what they
- 1:16:45think some of the long range or even
- 1:16:47short range
- 1:16:48>> go sort through that before
- 1:16:51>> introduce
- 1:16:52>> I have a I have a I have a meeting with
- 1:16:55the elders next on the seventh
- 1:16:58>> it it will never change unless a
- 1:17:00commitment made to make it change
- 1:17:03>> and it will be a slow start but it's
- 1:17:06when it's when people realize there's
- 1:17:08something of value to show up for
- 1:17:12>> is when you'll get more people in
- 1:17:13attendance.
- 1:17:15>> That's if it's a good topic because
- 1:17:17knowing how Patrick has that new uh
- 1:17:21class, more people going to that than
- 1:17:22having to try and find the other one
- 1:17:24because they love the topic
- 1:17:27>> what
- 1:17:28>> the topic the theme thinking about
- 1:17:30thinking. I remember my dad would do
- 1:17:31Wednesday night, no Sunday nights and he
- 1:17:34would do Hebrews and people loved how he
- 1:17:36taught and what he was going about it
- 1:17:38and a different perspective. That's why
- 1:17:40you got people. Yeah. If you just do
- 1:17:42something like, "Yeah, we're just gonna
- 1:17:43go through this book." They ain't gonna
- 1:17:45be interested in this. It's something
- 1:17:47interesting.
- 1:17:48>> That was my first comment. If they're
- 1:17:49going to get fed
- 1:17:52spiritually and maybe physically,
- 1:17:56>> they'll show up.
- 1:17:57>> True.
- 1:17:58>> But there has to be a value
- 1:18:00>> to what the assembly is for. I don't
- 1:18:03want to have another meeting just to
- 1:18:04have a meeting. I've been to enough of
- 1:18:07those.
- 1:18:07>> Right. It's interesting because when you
- 1:18:09talk to Joe and you talk to Rob, Joe,
- 1:18:11it's hard to understand for gospel
- 1:18:13rescue, but they've been coming for
- 1:18:15almost two months now.
- 1:18:16>> And that's one of the things that that
- 1:18:19Rob had mentioned before was is that he
- 1:18:23likes the message.
- 1:18:26They they've got other churches that go
- 1:18:29to Gospel Rescue and Community, pick
- 1:18:31people up at various times.
- 1:18:33>> Yeah.
- 1:18:33>> Sunday morning.
- 1:18:35>> So, There's a reason why they're coming
- 1:18:38back at least for them from spiritual
- 1:18:41standpoint.
- 1:18:42>> Let's continue. Join the rotation of
- 1:18:44adult teaching during Sunday morning
- 1:18:46classes. Participate and encourage
- 1:18:47fellowship and study within our small
- 1:18:50groups. Be available for one-on-one
- 1:18:52study with members and our community
- 1:18:55neighbors.
- 1:18:57I will work on that
- 1:19:00bullet point about small groups to
- 1:19:02indicate
- 1:19:03there's to be a dynamic aspect to it
- 1:19:07where there's people coming. I'll do
- 1:19:09something there to make that look like
- 1:19:11it's more
- 1:19:14people moving around.
- 1:19:15>> Uh preferred qualifications
- 1:19:18>> and these these are the ones I've made a
- 1:19:19note already. at least five years
- 1:19:21experience in ministry.
- 1:19:23>> A college degree or equivalent useful.
- 1:19:27>> What What is equivalent?
- 1:19:29>> Preaching school.
- 1:19:30>> Okay. Like Sunset or something like
- 1:19:31that.
- 1:19:33>> Sunset is probably the closest one
- 1:19:36around here that is still doing a good
- 1:19:39job.
- 1:19:40>> Yeah, that's what I had in mind.
- 1:19:43>> So, one question I had for you guys,
- 1:19:46college degree. Do you want it to be is
- 1:19:48it okay bachelors do you need a masters
- 1:19:52what do you feel like is necessary
- 1:19:54>> I don't think I don't think
- 1:19:58it would matter we're looking for a lot
- 1:20:00of other qualities that that piece of
- 1:20:03paper may not provide
- 1:20:05>> that's right
- 1:20:06>> you know I'm sorry but you know I do my
- 1:20:09job just as well I don't have one
- 1:20:12>> to me that the key is is is Sunday
- 1:20:15morning
- 1:20:16>> if he doesn't have the ability.
- 1:20:20I mean, that's that's what's going to
- 1:20:21keep people coming
- 1:20:24and a lot of it is is an individual
- 1:20:27preference, but
- 1:20:29you're not going to meet everybody's a
- 1:20:31Sunday morning. A college degree tells
- 1:20:35most people that this person is dedicate
- 1:20:37dedicated a length of time to one
- 1:20:41dedication
- 1:20:43to that education. that you know most of
- 1:20:45it but it doesn't it doesn't guarantee
- 1:20:48that they're any smarter than the next
- 1:20:49person
- 1:20:50>> right
- 1:20:51>> doesn't tell them they can do a job it
- 1:20:53just says
- 1:20:54>> they went to school
- 1:20:57>> they achieved accomplished knowledge of
- 1:20:59certain topics and they have that
- 1:21:02knowledge but again it goes back when
- 1:21:04you're looking for a man to stand in the
- 1:21:06pulpit
- 1:21:07>> it's just not Bible knowledge it's
- 1:21:09understanding of application and living
- 1:21:12it and you put that in
- 1:21:16So I don't think um
- 1:21:19though helpful because it it does it
- 1:21:22does bring out characteristics like you
- 1:21:25know um being in places on time you know
- 1:21:29dedicated to the to a position to a
- 1:21:32responsibility that you may not get but
- 1:21:35I don't think it's
- 1:21:37I don't think it's
- 1:21:39mandatory. Well, the nice thing about
- 1:21:41the college degree is you you're
- 1:21:42basically telling this person you want
- 1:21:45to want them to have rubbed elbows with
- 1:21:47people who really spent their lifetime
- 1:21:50studying for sure
- 1:21:52>> and that's going to really impart a lot
- 1:21:55of knowledge to them.
- 1:21:56>> But a bachelor's or bachelor's I don't
- 1:21:59think is
- 1:22:00>> had a masters. I'm sorry.
- 1:22:03>> Did he get it after after he got here?
- 1:22:06>> He got
- 1:22:08he got here.
- 1:22:09>> Okay. Yeah.
- 1:22:17>> So, you know, I you know,
- 1:22:23>> yeah, I don't I I think that it has its
- 1:22:26value, but I don't think it's a
- 1:22:27>> deal break.
- 1:22:30>> All right. Helpful in preparing the
- 1:22:32candidate for ministry. Strong
- 1:22:34communication and interpersonal skills.
- 1:22:36is able to listen and counsel others. An
- 1:22:38ability to facilitate outreach in ways
- 1:22:41that are natural and comfortable that
- 1:22:44are natural and comfortable to those new
- 1:22:47to the Christian faith live in our
- 1:22:50community so that others are drawn to
- 1:22:53you because of Christ
- 1:22:57experience with teaching others about
- 1:22:59the gospel of Jesus Christ. And that's
- 1:23:02probably where I'll start putting the
- 1:23:03five years in here. How much time?
- 1:23:07>> Well, wait. That's preferred
- 1:23:09qualifications. Shouldn't that go up in
- 1:23:13>> Well, I can just make qualifications.
- 1:23:15Maybe I say take the word.
- 1:23:16>> Take the word preferred.
- 1:23:17>> There we go. Bingo.
- 1:23:18>> Simplify.
- 1:23:23>> Have them ask questions about that.
- 1:23:24>> Able to innovate and explore ways to
- 1:23:26embrace people coming from diverse
- 1:23:28backgrounds.
- 1:23:29>> And I'll tell you where that came from.
- 1:23:32I guess you know the last small groups I
- 1:23:34don't know whether it was Teddy or Brian
- 1:23:36was saying well what to what extent does
- 1:23:40Lasus church reflect the demographics in
- 1:23:44Los Cruus and and I guess the conclusion
- 1:23:48was we don't we're not not as diverse as
- 1:23:50the community as a whole is but I didn't
- 1:23:53tell him that was far worse than here
- 1:23:58you have a lot of people here who are
- 1:24:00bilingual And and I enjoy hearing people
- 1:24:03ask question recently.
- 1:24:06>> That's only recently.
- 1:24:07>> Really?
- 1:24:07>> I would say probably
- 1:24:10>> like three about three years. Yeah.
- 1:24:12>> We start Teddy steady Teddy started
- 1:24:14pushing the bilingual retreat on it
- 1:24:17there family retreat and such like that.
- 1:24:20And then but he's always for the last 10
- 1:24:2312 years
- 1:24:25he's been interpreting
- 1:24:27>> for those who come in. And that's why we
- 1:24:29have the dual mics for heart of hearing
- 1:24:31and interpreting English to Spanish.
- 1:24:34>> So that's what that last bullet point
- 1:24:36was all about. We want to make sure that
- 1:24:38we not we're not so focused on
- 1:24:43one particular slice of the demographic
- 1:24:45that we miss out on reaching the people.
- 1:24:48>> Well, the demographics in that 2020
- 1:24:50report that I read said that Los Cusus
- 1:24:53is 60%.
- 1:24:56That was in 2018 or something.
- 1:25:00It's probably going up since then.
- 1:25:03>> I thought I heard Teddy say 65%
- 1:25:06>> but it was 60 something.
- 1:25:07>> It's still more than what we have.
- 1:25:10>> Yeah. So, somebody who has an eye out
- 1:25:14for how can we make it more
- 1:25:17accommodating or welcoming to people of
- 1:25:19broader backgrounds.
- 1:25:21And so, some innovation there. At least
- 1:25:24we've got there. qualifications.
- 1:25:27>> Start date 2027.
- 1:25:30>> Erase the 27. Yeah, I don't think we
- 1:25:33need, you know, I don't think it needs a
- 1:25:35date because it implies that we're not
- 1:25:36looking for somebody till the
- 1:25:38>> I think you just pull that out of the
- 1:25:39line.
- 1:25:39>> Just a flexible start date.
- 1:25:42>> Just take out start date, leave space
- 1:25:43for more stuff.
- 1:25:45>> You can do that, too. They know we're
- 1:25:46hiring. So, when we get to the end, you
- 1:25:48know,
- 1:25:49>> lay that whole thing out. you know
- 1:25:50during the interview process they're
- 1:25:52going to say when you somebody probably
- 1:25:53ask when do you plan to fill a position
- 1:25:55when the right person comes along could
- 1:25:57be tomorrow could be in six months from
- 1:26:00now
- 1:26:00>> the only reason I put something like
- 1:26:02that in there is maybe somebody's
- 1:26:04contract let's say done with church is
- 1:26:06ending in May 2027 and they want to know
- 1:26:10would we be ready for them
- 1:26:12>> I think we wait for them for example I
- 1:26:16thought that state of New Mexico was an
- 1:26:18at will for the employer and the
- 1:26:20employee know.
- 1:26:21>> Yes.
- 1:26:22>> So that means that even though you've
- 1:26:24got a contract, it's at will.
- 1:26:25>> Yeah.
- 1:26:26>> Either one either party can
- 1:26:29>> if you sign into a contract, you got to
- 1:26:32willingly dissolve it. So if you're not
- 1:26:34fulfilling your part of the agreement
- 1:26:37>> because you said I would stay here.
- 1:26:38>> I saw one ad the church listed
- 1:26:42>> that their position was a contract labor
- 1:26:44position
- 1:26:46>> which means they're an independent.
- 1:26:48They're responsible for all their own
- 1:26:50taxes and social security.
- 1:26:52The church only pays them a salary
- 1:26:56and it's that they're responsible for
- 1:26:58all of their finances.
- 1:27:00>> That's how that's how
- 1:27:04>> we were kind of a
- 1:27:09>> I think you know the contract
- 1:27:12>> the contract is a whole another story
- 1:27:14>> and I think that's something that the
- 1:27:16elders should be working on. Yeah.
- 1:27:18>> To improve on because I think there's a
- 1:27:20lot of holes in the there was there was
- 1:27:24>> I told them already that the the
- 1:27:27contract I saw
- 1:27:29was messy.
- 1:27:31>> It was uh everything you could think of
- 1:27:34it was and there were everything was
- 1:27:36scribbled on paper.
- 1:27:39Any adjustments were made. It was it was
- 1:27:41not kept good. So we had as a church
- 1:27:44>> you mean it wasn't black right? you
- 1:27:47wouldn't fly at your house,
- 1:27:50you know. No, I would not fly a tractor.
- 1:27:53I think, you know, we just need to do a
- 1:27:55better job. But you got to understand
- 1:27:57people writing some of this stuff, you
- 1:27:59know, that's not their that's not their
- 1:28:01skill set. So, um, you know, it's not
- 1:28:04mine, but maybe we need to
- 1:28:08at least offer some opinion to that and
- 1:28:11>> maybe you get
- 1:28:12>> seek some outside
- 1:28:13>> put it out there, hey, I do that. Yeah.
- 1:28:16Get something better that uh and more
- 1:28:20get something better.
- 1:28:21>> Yeah.
- 1:28:22>> And right and get all the all the
- 1:28:24particulars in. I think some of the
- 1:28:26stuff that carries from this because I
- 1:28:28know like we were talking before there's
- 1:28:29there's the before and there's the after
- 1:28:31and what are we getting all the before
- 1:28:32and the after into because they cross
- 1:28:34they eventually will cross a line. And
- 1:28:36the one thing to be careful about is our
- 1:28:38charge is to get to to get to that
- 1:28:40midpoint, hire somebody or recommend
- 1:28:44somebody for hire and then somebody else
- 1:28:46takes over from there. But do we want to
- 1:28:48be part of that in the next part, you
- 1:28:51know, but the first part is we need to
- 1:28:54recommend somebody and not to be
- 1:28:56confused or
- 1:28:58get all into the weeds of the other
- 1:29:00parts. Yeah. Anyway, this was very
- 1:29:03helpful.
- 1:29:06>> Thank you for doing it since I failed my
- 1:29:15>> No, I didn't get a call. I think um
- 1:29:20>> it's not maybe he forgotten. I talked to
- 1:29:22him Sunday and I said, "See you
- 1:29:23tomorrow." So, he knew, you know, I know
- 1:29:26he knows
- 1:29:28>> two more weeks.
- 1:29:30He's got too much. Maybe he had
- 1:29:32something to do. I'll talk to him later.
- 1:29:34>> I'll call um
- 1:29:37>> So, we're missing Dwayne. And who else?
- 1:29:38>> Dwayne resigned for the committee.
- 1:29:40>> Huh?
- 1:29:41>> Dwayne resigned from the committee.
- 1:29:43>> I knew you did.
- 1:29:44>> Didn't you say there was another?
- 1:29:47>> Uh Dwayne resigned. Ken resigned. Those
- 1:29:50are two that have resigned from the
- 1:29:51committee so far.
- 1:29:52>> Dwayne,
- 1:29:55he never came to he resigned before we
- 1:29:57started. Um
- 1:30:00Dylan and Leisia, he's home sick. And
- 1:30:03then Ryan is out coaching and Dean is
- 1:30:06out of state. So those are the remainder
- 1:30:10of and Lewis. Those are the remainder of
- 1:30:12the individual
- 1:30:15and so I will uh keep y'all in the loop
- 1:30:18on that.
- 1:30:19>> Do you have an email for
- 1:30:26me? Yeah,
- 1:30:27>> there is a
- 1:30:28>> I don't know what you mean. I have an
- 1:30:29email for me personally
- 1:30:31>> for the church that goes to
- 1:30:33>> Yeah.
- 1:30:35>> Yeah. No, don't mean this offensively,
- 1:30:38but if you're leading the group, should
- 1:30:41you have the applications come to you?
- 1:30:44>> What would you like?
- 1:30:46>> Oh. Oh, I see what you bottom line.
- 1:30:51>> The bottom line.
- 1:30:53>> I just threw that in there. Have
- 1:30:55something
- 1:30:57Yeah, he's got his own his very own
- 1:31:00email address.
- 1:31:01>> I have my very own.
- 1:31:02>> So, but a Las Church of Christ email is
- 1:31:05better.
- 1:31:06>> Yeah. Well, it is it's
- 1:31:09Christ.
- 1:31:10>> So, I can just substitute for Susie.
- 1:31:13>> Yes.
- 1:31:13>> Okay.
- 1:31:16>> Make sure it says
- 1:31:20>> Okay.
- 1:31:23>> I didn't know what you
- 1:31:27You're a fearless leader. I thought you
- 1:31:30should be the one that
- 1:31:34>> supporting your leaders.
- 1:31:35>> All right. All right. Um Okay. So, uh
- 1:31:39you're going to bring a revised
- 1:31:41up
- 1:31:42>> and then we'll talk about that tomorrow
- 1:31:44and we'll move on from that
- 1:31:45>> tomorrow.
- 1:31:46>> I mean,
- 1:31:48be here tomorrow.
- 1:31:49>> Hey, you show up and then it gets
- 1:31:51started. Somebody will be here. It'll be
- 1:31:53Susie.
- 1:31:54>> Did you tell him that you've already got
- 1:31:56a potential?
- 1:31:58>> Well, I told her already.
- 1:32:00>> Okay.
- 1:32:00>> Yeah.
- 1:32:01>> And the person's going to get in touch
- 1:32:03with her.
- 1:32:05>> A referral.
- 1:32:06>> We've got referral.
- 1:32:07>> Just go ahead and tell. Go ahead and
- 1:32:08share that with everybody.
- 1:32:10>> Christy Reer uh wanted to know who to
- 1:32:13contact. She knew I was on the committee
- 1:32:16and I told her she said she had a
- 1:32:19referral. She didn't go into details.
- 1:32:22She says she has a referral and he's
- 1:32:24going to get in touch with you.
- 1:32:28>> Well, we I I I told her just go ahead
- 1:32:31and refer them. We can talk to them and
- 1:32:33fil the process and that way we can at
- 1:32:36least get them and talk to them a little
- 1:32:38bit and then or at least hey, we'll get
- 1:32:40back in touch with you. Thank you for,
- 1:32:42you know, sending this over.
- 1:32:44>> I think we've got here that
- 1:32:46>> I just got an application. you would
- 1:32:49know if it was even close to meeting
- 1:32:51someone.
- 1:32:54>> I don't want to turn down any potential
- 1:32:55candidate even if only three weeks into
- 1:32:58the
- 1:32:59>> in regards to the two pieces of paper.
- 1:33:02>> I just don't want to turn down any
- 1:33:04potential thing. You know, you never you
- 1:33:06never know.
- 1:33:08>> This why you never know when that person
- 1:33:11is standing in front of you if you turn
- 1:33:14it out to us
- 1:33:15>> and you know
- 1:33:17after
- 1:33:20>> God puts in front of us all the time.
- 1:33:22It's our it's our job to open our eyes.
- 1:33:24>> And so that
- 1:33:27we just don't know it because we're so
- 1:33:30>> Yes. And we got to be
- 1:33:44>> I like yours.
- 1:33:47And uh it's feel this
- 1:33:51sorry to say but this is very dry
- 1:33:55>> and very bullet pointed and
- 1:33:57>> this is not this is not an ad. This is
- 1:34:01the contract for
- 1:34:03>> yeah it says a servant agreement. Yeah.
- 1:34:06So you're you'reating
- 1:34:09the very specifics that you want this
- 1:34:11person,
- 1:34:12>> but a lot of the documentation in there
- 1:34:14is very like that.
- 1:34:16>> The goal of those two was to attract
- 1:34:19>> and I think it'll it'll do exactly that.
- 1:34:22like
- 1:34:22>> this.
- 1:34:26So we'll we'll see that and then we'll
- 1:34:28start working on what we want the next
- 1:34:30you know interview guide to be like what
- 1:34:33questions we want to make sure
- 1:34:39documents
- 1:34:41>> everybody let's see
- 1:34:43>> it's on the shared documents
- 1:34:47>> copy and there was four separate pages
- 1:34:50that I think came from the eldership
- 1:34:52what you gave me
- 1:34:54>> you got to be more specific.
- 1:34:56>> You I wasn't here for the kickoff
- 1:34:59meeting, so you gave me
- 1:35:02>> four separate things,
- 1:35:04>> right?
- 1:35:05>> It's the documents that uh Dave shared
- 1:35:07with everybody.
- 1:35:08>> Yes.
- 1:35:09>> At the beginning.
- 1:35:10>> Yes.
- 1:35:10>> The charge
- 1:35:13the charge.
- 1:35:13>> This is one of them. There was another.
- 1:35:15>> It's all in the folder.
- 1:35:17>> So,
- 1:35:17>> everything is in the folder.
- 1:35:19>> We have
- 1:35:21what I just handed out. Perspective.
- 1:35:24That's something else. Uh
- 1:35:28preacher search committee charge.
- 1:35:30>> That's the that was the charge finding
- 1:35:33the preacher.
- 1:35:34>> Um the questionnaire
- 1:35:37like the the survey
- 1:35:38>> survey
- 1:35:42>> and then the group
- 1:35:45>> that was the one where the charge to the
- 1:35:47group.
- 1:35:47>> I like yours.
- 1:35:49>> I'm not sure we're ready.
- 1:35:50>> That's the group guide. The charge is
- 1:35:52something a little different. Yeah,
- 1:35:55>> it was more of just saying that's what
- 1:35:57the committee should be doing.
- 1:36:02>> Um,
- 1:36:03>> just so you know, uh, Susie,
- 1:36:07um, who was with you
- 1:36:10>> yesterday when Brian came to the office
- 1:36:15when he asked you, uh, how's the
- 1:36:17committee going? When you told me you
- 1:36:19couldn't tell, I was
- 1:36:23We know
- 1:36:24>> Brian came to the office and asked for
- 1:36:27feedback on the meeting and they told
- 1:36:28him that we're sorry we can't share that
- 1:36:31with you.
- 1:36:33>> That was me.
- 1:36:35>> I has been sworn to secrecy
- 1:36:38like what you can't tell you. I just
- 1:36:41happened to walk up to you got to ask
- 1:36:43him.
- 1:36:45>> No. So I would like to have bought
- 1:36:48caught him off guard and I told him no
- 1:36:50that's it was strictly not the eldership
- 1:36:54but we shouldn't be talking to everybody
- 1:36:56else in regards to I got
- 1:37:00>> strictly so that it could be free.
- 1:37:02>> Yeah.
- 1:37:02>> So Jorge was good. He spilled a whole
- 1:37:05pot of beans.
- 1:37:06>> Oh really?
- 1:37:06>> Ryan got the whole
- 1:37:08>> I I I brought him up what we were
- 1:37:09working on and everything like that.
- 1:37:12Told him you know what we had talked
- 1:37:13about and why No. She said what she
- 1:37:15said. But I think that was good. You
- 1:37:17know, it was not it was not me. It's
- 1:37:19just that we we we made sure that listen
- 1:37:22we want to make sure that we're uh
- 1:37:24sending a unified message and that we
