- 0:02Gavin, it's almost here. The the big
- 0:04kickoff. Are you uh rowing to go, ready
- 0:06to go?
- 0:07>> Yeah. Um couldn't be any more prepared.
- 0:09I think the lads in terms of their
- 0:11conditioning, you know, it's uh probably
- 0:13the the toughest but most productive
- 0:16preseason I've seen um as a player and
- 0:19as a manager. So, really pleased about
- 0:20that. The the lad's attitude and
- 0:22application's great. Uh everyone's
- 0:24healthy training today, which was uh was
- 0:26always the aim. So yeah, we're just um
- 0:28we now need to double down on our on our
- 0:30process of how we want to win games.
- 0:33Still got like like I say about 10 11
- 0:35lads who have come into the building
- 0:36still settling in. So it may take a bit
- 0:38of time for us to really hit our flow
- 0:40state but um you know what we've seen
- 0:43from day one up until now we've there's
- 0:45been a a high level of progression. So
- 0:47yeah, we're uh we're as ready as we can
- 0:49be.
- 0:50>> How pleased have you been with
- 0:51recruitment? What have you been able to
- 0:53do in the the transfer market?
- 0:55>> Yeah, listen it's been tough. It's been
- 0:56really tough. It's um been quite
- 0:58exasperating at times because again, you
- 1:00know, one thing I promised that I'd be
- 1:02in every room. Um and I think I've
- 1:03fulfilled that promise. But, you know,
- 1:06nature of where we're at at the moment
- 1:07is you're going to miss out on a few.
- 1:08So, look, we've um we've endeavored to
- 1:10to just be right in front of everyone.
- 1:13You know, anyone that we're interested
- 1:14in that that suits the way we play,
- 1:16we've had discussions with players that
- 1:17we feel that probably aren't fit for us
- 1:19as well. Um or or the right fit, should
- 1:21I say, um maybe fit into the way we
- 1:23play. Uh but in terms of who we have got
- 1:25in the building, yeah, really happy. Uh
- 1:27really happy with um with where we're at
- 1:29when you when you take it as a bigger
- 1:30picture for for where we are
- 1:32budget-wise, for what we're able to
- 1:34recruit and you know, I think we've got
- 1:35I think we've we've maximized it and got
- 1:37the best version of it and probably
- 1:38recruited ahead of of where we're at. So
- 1:41uh that was always the aim.
- 1:42>> Yeah. Your first summer of course as
- 1:43Shby Town manager, have you enjoyed the
- 1:45challenge actually of being able to put
- 1:47your stamp on on the squad and and and
- 1:50go out and and bring in players you've
- 1:52identified? um enjoyed. It's probably,
- 1:55you know, a a very flamboyant word for
- 1:58it. I think, listen, it's a lot of hard
- 2:00work. You know, when everybody finishes
- 2:01the season and they go off on their
- 2:02summer holidays, I've been lucky to have
- 2:04a bit of time with the family, which is
- 2:05great, but you know, that phone's always
- 2:07going. So, it is a real critical time
- 2:09for us. Um it's one where I've wanted to
- 2:12recruit ahead of where we are in terms
- 2:15of, you know, finances and and and so
- 2:17forth. So, we feel like we've done that.
- 2:18we feel like we've done some really good
- 2:20business uh for where it's at and
- 2:22maximize that. So that's just come from
- 2:24a lot of hard work, you know, a lot of
- 2:25endeavor, a lot of sleepless nights, a
- 2:27lot of hours on the phone, um and a lot
- 2:30of demands of the staff to to make sure
- 2:32that I've got everything I can to make
- 2:33an informed decision. So um yeah, it's
- 2:37extremely hard. It's extremely tough.
- 2:39It's it's sometimes quite demoralizing
- 2:41when you you know when you don't get
- 2:42what you want, but you know, it's when
- 2:44you do get what you want. And when you
- 2:45see some of the players that that we're
- 2:47seeing now who are training, it's um
- 2:49yeah, I'm really happy with with some of
- 2:51the lads that come into the building.
- 2:52Unbelievable characters as a as a
- 2:54brilliant togetherness in the group
- 2:55already. Um I've just Yeah, you really
- 2:58get that feeling that, you know, to be
- 2:59successful, you have to have a good
- 3:00change room, you have to have good lads,
- 3:02and these are definitely that. So, I
- 3:03feel like the culture that we talk about
- 3:05off the field is uh is in a really good
- 3:07place. So, you know, I think these lads
- 3:09are in a good position to really have a
- 3:10good season.
- 3:11>> And in terms of recruitment, Gavin,
- 3:12still more to come.
- 3:13>> Yeah, I'd like to think so. Obviously,
- 3:15we've got to do a bit of work. It
- 3:16doesn't move in straight lines. Really
- 3:18thankful to get, you know, as much
- 3:20backing as possible. Again, keep
- 3:21referring to where we're at at the
- 3:22moment. That's just, you know, just just
- 3:24try and bring a bit of realism to it,
- 3:26you know, and just, you know, try and
- 3:27put perspective on it. But, um, you
- 3:29know, for where what we're capable of,
- 3:31I'm, you know, I'm getting full back
- 3:32into to go and do that. we have to
- 3:34balance books and obviously we've got
- 3:35players that are on the transfer list at
- 3:37the moment. So, we're just trying to
- 3:38balance that off and and we're trying to
- 3:39be patient, you know, proactively
- 3:41patient as I keep saying. So, yeah, I'd
- 3:43like to think that um you know, there'll
- 3:45there'll be some good news for for fans
- 3:47coming soon. Um how long that takes will
- 3:50obviously be dependent on how we can uh
- 3:52manage the business side of it. So,
- 3:54yeah, working extremely hard on on uh
- 3:57balancing the squad that's already, like
- 3:59I say, much more balanced, less bloated.
- 4:02um and and a lot of thought gone into it
- 4:04which the uh I think the recruitment
- 4:06staff have been appreciative of.
- 4:08>> Any update on the the four transfer
- 4:10listed players.
- 4:12>> Um I think Ricardo Danger will be um
- 4:15will be moving to to Scotland for a
- 4:17period of time which is great for him. I
- 4:19think Cal Stewart is imminent. Um and
- 4:21then you're just waiting on the other
- 4:22two. So your guess is as good as mine on
- 4:25that. I you know I'm just trying to
- 4:26focus on the group that I've got at the
- 4:27moment and just try and stay in tune
- 4:29with obviously the game tomorrow. So,
- 4:31um, that's just genuinely what I know
- 4:33about those four.
- 4:34>> Are they permanent transfers for Ricardo
- 4:36and and Canon?
- 4:37>> You'll know as much as me, mate. I'm
- 4:38not, like I say, I'll probably know a
- 4:40little bit more at the end of the day.
- 4:41I'm not trying to be koi at all. I'm
- 4:42just genuinely I like to give the fans
- 4:44uh all of the knowledge that I have. Um,
- 4:46it annoys me sometimes when managers
- 4:49keep people in the dark unnecessarily.
- 4:50So, I'm genuinely not doing that. I just
- 4:52haven't caught up with anyone yet and
- 4:53just been really focused on trying to
- 4:55prepare for tomorrow's game. So, um,
- 4:57yeah, I'm sure that that'll all be
- 4:58divulged um, ASAP. But yeah, not not
- 5:01really in my uh line of vision at the
- 5:03minute, mate.
- 5:03>> Okay.
- 5:04>> How's the uh the injured players?
- 5:05Obviously, you've been without um Luca
- 5:07Hall now for a few weeks. Jack Price,
- 5:10Sam Stubs missed out against the Aston
- 5:11Villa 11. Are they got a chance of being
- 5:14involved at at it stands?
- 5:16>> Yeah. Yeah. All raring to go. All been
- 5:18in training. So, I think we just manage
- 5:20them a little bit and you know, we may
- 5:22just uh they've only had a couple of
- 5:24days training, so yeah, we might need to
- 5:26ease them in a little bit. They might
- 5:27potentially not be involved tomorrow,
- 5:29but certainly fit and raring to go
- 5:30moving forward.
- 5:31>> Everybody else okay?
- 5:33>> All good. Yeah, I think they're all just
- 5:35like I say, they're a bit like a coiled
- 5:36spring. You know, they're chomping at
- 5:37the bit. They're just desperate to get
- 5:39going and and start showing what they're
- 5:41capable of. Uh, you know, there's a
- 5:42there's a quiet confidence in the group.
- 5:44Um, again, like I say, there's a lot of
- 5:47clarity on on what we do when we when we
- 5:49play. Um, we have a plan that we stick
- 5:51to. Um although it's fluent to to make
- 5:53sure that we're able to adapt, but um I
- 5:55just think like I say, I think they're
- 5:57like a coiled spring now. They want to
- 5:58they want to feel the the desire for
- 6:00competition, you know, three points. Um
- 6:03yeah, I think they're just desperate to
- 6:05get moving now.
- 6:06>> It does all start with a League Cup game
- 6:08at Sulford, a place you had a terrific
- 6:10win at in the league in February, I
- 6:13think it was. Um they've got a new
- 6:15manager. They've been busy in the
- 6:16transfer market as well. What are your
- 6:18thoughts going into this one? Yeah,
- 6:20they're going to be a huge team at the
- 6:21level. Um, obviously brought in some
- 6:24extremely
- 6:26um good players um high level players.
- 6:29Um they obviously want to play very
- 6:31expansive uh dynamic football. Um and
- 6:34that yeah, I'm sure they're going to be
- 6:35a force to be reckoned with, but um
- 6:37that's that's the sort of echelons we
- 6:39want to be at. You know, we want to be a
- 6:40force to be reckoned with in our own in
- 6:42our own mind as well. So um and
- 6:44certainly just to show everybody what
- 6:46we're capable of. you know, I don't
- 6:47think it can be a better game for us.
- 6:49You know, you're going up against a real
- 6:50top team who have got real aspirations
- 6:52to get promoted this year. So, let's go
- 6:53and find out where we're at. Let's go
- 6:55and see what uh what we're capable of.
- 6:57And uh look, nothing will nothing will
- 6:59be uh there'll be no forecast based on
- 7:01one game. But, you know, it is a great
- 7:02opportunity for us to go there and and
- 7:04just give a really good account of
- 7:05ourselves, be the best version of
- 7:06ourselves, and get to the next round of
- 7:07the FA Cup. So, we just we're just the
- 7:10lads at the moment, like I say, are a
- 7:11coiled spring. They're desperate for
- 7:13that competition. preseason is great,
- 7:15but there's nothing like the real thing.
- 7:17We've kept we've we've left them in a
- 7:18place where they're wanting more and I
- 7:20just really feel like, you know, they're
- 7:21they're ready to hit the ground running,
- 7:22but from a Sulford perspective, look,
- 7:24you know, you couldn't you couldn't get
- 7:25a tougher test, but we wouldn't want it
- 7:27any other way. I know it's an old
- 7:29cliche, the league is always considered
- 7:31to be the most important, but where
- 7:33would a League Cup run um rank in
- 7:37everything for you in terms you've got
- 7:38to get past Sulford? Of course, that's
- 7:39going to be difficult, but in terms of
- 7:41having a bit of a run with the the
- 7:43interest it can bring, a cup run, the
- 7:45finance as well. Is it pretty high on
- 7:47your on your agenda? I think like first
- 7:49and foremost like for financially for
- 7:51the club you know it's always a lovely
- 7:53reward and and listen we always want to
- 7:54win games you know regardless of
- 7:56competition you want to be in it to win
- 7:57games um our priority will be the league
- 8:00and we want to have FA we want to have
- 8:02FA Cup and Carabal Cup runs um because
- 8:04as you say you know I think it brings
- 8:06momentum I think it brings confidence I
- 8:08think it brings a togetherness with the
- 8:09fans you know they they love an FA Cup
- 8:11run as well so yeah listen the focus for
- 8:13me this year will be on the league but
- 8:15ultimately we want to do well in all the
- 8:16cups so we want to stick our neck out
- 8:18and say that, you know, we want to go to
- 8:19Sulford, we want to do everything we can
- 8:21to get a result there. We want to get to
- 8:23the next round. Um there is a a bigger
- 8:26picture for me. You know, obviously
- 8:27going into next week against Tramir, we
- 8:29want to make sure that everybody comes
- 8:30out healthy and we want to make sure
- 8:31that, you know, we've we give a good
- 8:33account of ourselves, but for us, it's a
- 8:35big big opportunity to go and, you know,
- 8:38lay a marker down against a team that
- 8:40has huge expectations of with Sulford.
- 8:42Um and perhaps we can go there and uh
- 8:44and show everybody what we're about. How
- 8:46do you view League 2 generally this time
- 8:49around? Some some very good clubs have
- 8:50obviously left the division. Um how do
- 8:53you view the overall strength of of
- 8:55League 2 at the start of the campaign?
- 8:58>> I think it's stronger. I think um you
- 9:00know it brings a probably packs a lot of
- 9:01teams together. I think it's going to be
- 9:03a really strong year this year. I think
- 9:05um you know you you'll probably see with
- 9:07a lot of the the teams that are
- 9:09expecting to be up there the acquisition
- 9:10of strikers. you know, they're not only
- 9:12bringing strikers into the building to
- 9:14compete for a place in the team. I think
- 9:17they're almost saturating the market and
- 9:18starving other teams, you know, and if
- 9:20they've got the financial capability to
- 9:22do that, it's a great strategy. Um, but
- 9:24that's just where it's at. And I've been
- 9:26in those rooms asking those questions
- 9:27and and and players go there and and
- 9:29understandably, you know, they got
- 9:31families, so they go there and and
- 9:32invest in uh a club that are willing to
- 9:36highly invest in them. Um, but they're
- 9:38saturating the market. So those teams
- 9:40you expect to be right in the mix cuz
- 9:41goals will be everything this year. You
- 9:43know, both ends, stopping them and
- 9:44scoring them obviously. So, um it's it's
- 9:47a tough league. It's going to be a
- 9:48strong league. Um and we've recruited to
- 9:51to a position where we feel like we can
- 9:53be highly competitive. We can be on the
- 9:55front foot. Again, there's been a lot of
- 9:58um maybe overpromising prior and what I
- 10:00don't want to do is overpromise and
- 10:02underdel, but you know, I want to offer
- 10:03hope. You know, I see this group every
- 10:05day, all day. I like to think I know uh
- 10:08a good team, good players when I see
- 10:09them. Um I think we're on to the right
- 10:11thing in terms of the togetherness with
- 10:12the group and I think we're on to a
- 10:13right thing in terms of how we want to
- 10:15play and the style and what it's going
- 10:17to take to win games. So um yeah, I'm
- 10:19I'm quietly optimistic. Um trying to
- 10:21trying to stay reserved because again
- 10:23what I don't want to do is give people
- 10:24false hope, but there's a lot of belief
- 10:26in the camp. That's what I would say.
- 10:28you know, we're um without wishing to be
- 10:30arrogant, we're trying to stay very
- 10:31humble, but also trying to have that
- 10:33quiet belief that we can uh we can do
- 10:35something, you know, extraordinary this
- 10:38year.
- 10:38>> I was going to say, have you got
- 10:39targets, ambitions in mind ahead of the
- 10:42the season getting underway?
- 10:43>> I think, listen, it's been a tough
- 10:44couple of years for the for the club and
- 10:46I understand that. And again, just going
- 10:47back to it, I don't want to overpromise,
- 10:49you know, I don't want to get people
- 10:51overly excited, but I I also I'm a big
- 10:53believer in belief, you know, fans. If
- 10:55you're going to be a fan and a
- 10:56supporter, support the club. You know,
- 10:57believe that we could achieve something.
- 10:59And when you do that, it's great. You
- 11:00know, tiresome of, you know, obviously
- 11:03supporters across the country will
- 11:04support their teams. And some people
- 11:06just haven't got anything good to say.
- 11:07You know, that's the sort of boring side
- 11:09for me that I just completely eradicate
- 11:11out of my brain. You know, I'm
- 11:12interested in the supporters that want
- 11:14to get on board, not just when it's
- 11:15going well, when it's not. And they're
- 11:16the teams that do well. You know, when
- 11:18you have players, club staff, supporters
- 11:21who are united whether we win, lose, or
- 11:23draw. Um, listen, winning games
- 11:25obviously matters and it and it helps.
- 11:28Um, but you know, players are here to,
- 11:32you know, be willing to get hurt for the
- 11:34badge, show that desire. Fans are here
- 11:36to support through thick and thin, but
- 11:38be positive. You know, that's for me
- 11:40that's supporting a team and the club
- 11:41have got to obviously back us in what
- 11:43we're doing and I feel like they're
- 11:44doing that to the to the best of their
- 11:45ability at the moment. So, I think like
- 11:47we're in a really good place. You know,
- 11:49I think the open day showed me, you
- 11:50know, the true colors of our club and
- 11:53the fans and how they feel, you know,
- 11:54the the love and the the excitement and
- 11:57the anticipation for a season um was was
- 12:00really evident and I think um we feel
- 12:03that in a training ground. You know, I
- 12:04think people at the club are slightly
- 12:06more optimistic. So, look, we're not
- 12:07going to start putting a number on it,
- 12:09but what we will say is that, you know,
- 12:11the cliche is take it each game as it
- 12:13comes. Um but this this group is uh full
- 12:16of pace, full of athleticism, full of
- 12:18desire, uh full of belief. Um and and we
- 12:22feel like we're in a position where we
- 12:23can go and really give teams a really
- 12:25tough time and and and come out with
- 12:26results that we hope to get.
- 12:28>> All the very best for the season, Gavin.
- 12:29Thanks for your time. Thanks.
