  1. 0:00Why are so many tornadoes happening in
  2. 0:02Brazil? Imagine opening your window and
  3. 0:04coming across this right here. There is
  4. 0:07a popular belief that tornadoes don't
  5. 0:08happen in Brazil, but that is
  6. 0:10absolutely false. Southern Brazil is
  7. 0:12located within the South American
  8. 0:13tornado alley, which is one of the
  9. 0:14areas with the highest probability of
  10. 0:16tornadoes in the world. This year alone
  11. 0:18, so far, 81 tornadoes and similar
  12. 0:19phenomena have already been recorded
  13. 0:21here in Brazil. And in fact, in recent
  14. 0:23days, we have been able to witness
  15. 0:25several videos showing tornadoes in
  16. 0:26Brazilian cities. This one happened in
  17. 0:29the city of Giroá, in Rio Grande do
  18. 0:31Sul, and this one in Pedro Osório. And
  19. 0:33looking at all of this, it seems
  20. 0:34obvious that tornadoes are becoming
  21. 0:36more common in Brazil. But it's not
  22. 0:38that simple. What has certainly
  23. 0:40increased is the number of tornadoes
  24. 0:42that we record. Or, putting it another
  25. 0:45way, we are still not sure if the
  26. 0:47number of tornadoes happening per year
  27. 0:49has actually increased or if we are
  28. 0:50perceiving that more are happening
  29. 0:52because we are managing to document
  30. 0:54more of them, thanks to smartphones and
  31. 0:56the internet. This year seems to have
  32. 0:59an extra element, El Niño. It’s kind
  33. 1:02of instinctive to use a deeper voice to
  34. 1:04say El Niño.
  35. 1:05El Niño. There.
  36. 1:07We are going through an El Niño that
  37. 1:09is strengthening, and this favors
  38. 1:10extreme events like severe storms, heat
  39. 1:12waves, and droughts. And in the south
  40. 1:15of the country, El Niño favors storms
  41. 1:17and boosts the basic ingredients for
  42. 1:19tornado formation, such as atmospheric
  43. 1:21instability and wind shear, when the
  44. 1:22speed and direction of the wind change
  45. 1:24with altitude. And to end this video,
  46. 1:27an extra fun fact. Did you know that
  47. 1:28tornadoes all over the world usually
  48. 1:30happen in the late afternoon? Oh, and
  49. 1:31that they have also been detected on
  50. 1:33every continent in the world, except
  51. 1:35Antarctica. That's it.
