- 0:00This is Spider-Man's first comic, and
- 0:02if you compare it to the most popular
- 0:04superheroes of the era, everything
- 0:06indicated it was destined to fail.
- 0:08Superman and Captain America were
- 0:09strong, confident, and almost perfect
- 0:11adults. Peter Parker, on the other hand
- 0:13, was an insecure teenager who was
- 0:15bullied, had money problems, and could
- 0:17barely manage his own life. But the
- 0:19exact opposite happened. Spider-Man
- 0:21ended up becoming the favorite
- 0:23superhero of millions and forever
- 0:25changed how these stories are told.
- 0:28That insecure teenager would face off
- 0:30against villains as famous as the Green
- 0:32Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Venom, and the
- 0:33Punisher. But his comics would also
- 0:36dare to touch on much harsher topics
- 0:39like depression, substance abuse,
- 0:41self-harm, and the abuse of the
- 0:43innocent. And bringing him to the big
- 0:46screen would be just as complicated.
- 0:47For years, they tried to make his movie
- 0:49with directors like James Cameron and
- 0:51Tim Burton, and actors like Leonardo
- 0:53DiCaprio and Tom Cruise. There was even
- 0:56a horror version that Stan Lee hated.
- 0:59So, how did Spider-Man go from being a
- 1:02rejected idea to becoming Marvel's most
- 1:05important character? That is precisely
- 1:08what we are going to discover. We will
- 1:10learn the origins of his most famous
- 1:12characters and villains. We will also
- 1:14review some of his craziest storylines
- 1:16with clones, pregnancies, fake deaths,
- 1:18and romances worthy of a soap opera.
- 1:21And we will also go behind the scenes
- 1:23to learn about the movies that were
- 1:25never made, the most surprising stories
- 1:27from the sets, the fights between
- 1:29Marvel and Sony, and the possibility of
- 1:31Andrew Garfield being the official
- 1:32Spider-Man of the Avengers. All to
- 1:35answer one question. After so many
- 1:38decades, so many versions, and hundreds
- 1:41of superheroes, why is Spider-Man still
- 1:43one of our favorites? It all begins
- 1:45with Stanley Martin Lieber, a boy with
- 1:48a passion for reading. Among his
- 1:50favorite stories were Sherlock Holmes,
- 1:53about a detective chasing criminals;
- 1:55King Arthur, where a young man gains
- 1:57great power accompanied by huge
- 1:59responsibility; and The Spider, a
- 2:01masked vigilante who marks his victims
- 2:03with a spider symbol. Over time, that
- 2:06passion for stories awakened in him the
- 2:08dream of becoming a writer. However, he
- 2:11only manages to get a job at Timely
- 2:13Comics, where he starts as an assistant
- 2:15to Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, the
- 2:17creators of Captain America. That's
- 2:20right, contrary to what many might
- 2:22think, Stanley did not create all the
- 2:23characters that would later become part
- 2:25of the Marvel universe. In fact, there
- 2:29is still a great debate about who was
- 2:31the true creator of Spider-Man, and you
- 2:33will soon see why. Since Stanley was
- 2:35ashamed of working on comics, he
- 2:37decided to save his real name for the
- 2:39novels he planned to write one day.
- 2:41That is why, to sign these comics, he
- 2:43adopted the pseudonym Stan Lee. While
- 2:46working with Kirby and Simon, he
- 2:47learned the formula that superheroes of
- 2:49the era followed. They had to be strong
- 2:51, brave, and practically perfect, like
- 2:54Captain America or Superman. So, over
- 2:56time, he began to grow within the
- 2:58company. Stan wrote the stories while
- 3:00other artists took charge of drawing
- 3:02them, and that is where he created
- 3:04characters like The Destroyer. But in
- 3:06the 50s, something changed in people,
- 3:09and interest in superheroes began to
- 3:12fade. This was partly because, after
- 3:15World War II, the public was
- 3:16disillusioned and no longer connected
- 3:18the same way with those perfect heroes.
- 3:22So the company bet on darker and more
- 3:24varied genres with western, horror, and
- 3:27sci-fi stories in titles like Journey
- 3:29into Mystery, Strange Tales, and Tales
- 3:31of Suspense. But soon, even that didn't
- 3:34work. Comics sold less and less, and
- 3:37the company was on the verge of closing
- 3:39. And since Stan had never wanted to
- 3:41work in comics and was already thinking
- 3:44about quitting, his wife told him, "If
- 3:46you're going to leave anyway, why don't
- 3:48you write the stories you would
- 3:50actually like to read?" With little to
- 3:54lose, Stanley and Jack Kirby returned
- 3:56to superheroes and created a very
- 3:58different team: the Fantastic Four.
- 4:01Unlike the perfect heroes of the past,
- 4:03they argued, made mistakes, and had
- 4:05personal problems. They were more human
- 4:07, and that is why readers connected
- 4:09with them. The Fantastic Four became a
- 4:12success and saved the company, but
- 4:14perhaps more importantly, they finally
- 4:17made Stan fall in love with writing
- 4:19comics. After the Fantastic Four, the
- 4:22publisher adopted the name Marvel and
- 4:25returned to betting on superheroes, now
- 4:27within the same universe. To expand
- 4:30them, Stan created characters like Hulk
- 4:32and Thor, but his boss still wanted one
- 4:34more. One that would change the history
- 4:37of Marvel forever, and that would be
- 4:39Spider-Man. Pay close attention to this
- 4:47, because this is where the story of
- 4:48who created Spider-Man starts to get
- 4:50complicated. According to Stan Lee, one
- 4:53day he was in his office looking for an
- 4:55idea for his next hero when he saw a
- 4:57fly crawling up the wall. Then he
- 5:00thought, "What if I could create
- 5:02someone capable of climbing walls like
- 5:04an insect?" What would a superhero like
- 5:06that be called? Flyman, Insectman. They
- 5:10sounded quite ridiculous. Until he
- 5:12remembered The Spider, the vigilante
- 5:14from the magazines he read as a child.
- 5:16Thus was born a hero with the agility
- 5:19and the ability of a spider to stick to
- 5:22walls. And the perfect name also
- 5:24appeared: Spider-Man. But Stan wanted
- 5:26to do something different. He realized
- 5:29that many teenagers read comics, but
- 5:30none of the heroes were really like
- 5:32them. Back then, protagonists were
- 5:35almost always adults and the youth were
- 5:37relegated to the role of sidekicks.
- 5:41This time, Stan wants the teenager to
- 5:43be the hero, and not a perfect one, but
- 5:46someone with age-appropriate issues
- 5:48like acne, bullying, insecurities, and
- 5:50trouble talking to girls. This way,
- 5:53readers can admire him, but also see
- 5:56themselves reflected in him. But when
- 5:58he told his boss, he didn't like the
- 6:01idea at all. He told him that people
- 6:04hate spiders, that Spider-Man sounds
- 6:06too much like Superman, and that nobody
- 6:08wants to read about a weak, ordinary
- 6:11teenager. His boss rejected the idea,
- 6:13but Spider-Man stayed stuck in Stan's
- 6:15mind. No matter how much time passes,
- 6:18he just can't let go of the character.
- 6:21Then he discovers that Amazing Fantasy,
- 6:23a series of short stories, is about to
- 6:25be canceled. Since he has nothing left
- 6:28to lose, he takes advantage of its
- 6:30final issue, number 15, to introduce
- 6:33Spider-Man. But for that, he needs to
- 6:35give shape to the character. And pay
- 6:38close attention, because this is where
- 6:40the story of who really created
- 6:42Spider-Man starts to get complicated.
- 6:44First, Stan turns to the artist Jack
- 6:46Kirby. Then, Kirby tells him that years
- 6:49ago he had worked on a similar
- 6:51superhero called The Silver Spider. In
- 6:53fact, at the beginning, they had even
- 6:55thought about calling him Spider-Man.
- 6:57The protagonist was Tommy Troy, an
- 6:59orphan boy who lived with an elderly
- 7:02couple and found a magic ring capable
- 7:04of transforming him into an adult.
- 7:07However, the character had very little
- 7:09to do with a spider, and the
- 7:10editor-in-chief thought it had no
- 7:12potential. A decision he would surely
- 7:15end up regretting. But the idea didn't
- 7:17disappear completely. Over time, it
- 7:20evolved to become another superhero,
- 7:22The Fly, created in part by Kirby. This
- 7:25character could climb walls and had
- 7:27abilities very similar to those
- 7:28Spider-Man would later have. For this
- 7:31reason, years later, Kirby would claim
- 7:33that he had created the first version
- 7:35of the spider-man. And of course, there
- 7:38are definitely some similarities.
- 7:40However, when Stan asks Kirby to design
- 7:42the character, the result doesn't
- 7:44convince him. Kirby imagines Spider-Man
- 7:47as a strong, muscular hero, too similar
- 7:50to Captain America, and he even gives
- 7:52him a gun to shoot his webs. Since that
- 7:56isn't the image he has in mind, Stan
- 7:58turns to another artist, Steve Ditko.
- 8:02Ditko understands much better what he
- 8:03is looking for. He draws Peter as a
- 8:06skinny, hunched teenager with glasses,
- 8:09very far from the typical perfect hero.
- 8:12Also, he transforms Kirby's gun into
- 8:15two small devices worn on the wrists,
- 8:18from which Peter shoots his webs as if
- 8:20he were truly a spider. Ditko also
- 8:23designs the red and blue suit and makes
- 8:25an unusual decision for the time: to
- 8:27completely cover the hero's face. This
- 8:30way, no one can tell how old Spider-Man
- 8:32is, and any reader can imagine
- 8:33themselves under the mask. As you can
- 8:36see, each of these men contributed to
- 8:38the creation of the character, so it is
- 8:40difficult, if not impossible, to say
- 8:42that one person alone deserves the
- 8:43credit for creating Spider-Man. With
- 8:46the character ready, Stan finishes
- 8:47polishing his origin story. And in
- 8:50August 1962, in the final issue of
- 8:52Amazing Fantasy, the world meets
- 8:54Spider-Man. In this first comic, we
- 8:57meet Peter Parker, a 15-year-old
- 8:59teenager living in Queens with his
- 9:01Uncle Ben and Aunt May, who raised him
- 9:03since he lost his parents. And right
- 9:05here we find the first stage of
- 9:06Spider-Man's story: adolescence. In it,
- 9:09Peter is brilliant, shy, and studious,
- 9:11but also insecure, impulsive, and
- 9:13somewhat arrogant. He is bullied at
- 9:15school and still does not understand
- 9:17the weight of his decisions. Everything
- 9:19changes during a science exhibit when a
- 9:21radioactive spider bites him, giving
- 9:23him agility and the ability to climb
- 9:24walls. Using his knowledge, Peter
- 9:27builds some web-shooters. However, he
- 9:29is not yet thinking about becoming a
- 9:31hero. What he wants is to earn money,
- 9:33become famous, and prove that he is no
- 9:35longer the weak kid everyone mocked.
- 9:37That is why he decides to enter a
- 9:39wrestling competition, where his
- 9:40performance impresses a producer so
- 9:42much that he invites him to appear on
- 9:44television. To do so, Peter designs a
- 9:47red and blue suit and adopts a new
- 9:49identity. Spider-Man. The character
- 9:53quickly becomes a sensation, and the
- 9:55fame starts to go to his head. For that
- 9:58reason, one night, when he sees a thief
- 10:00escaping and a policeman asks him to
- 10:02stop him, Peter refuses. He says he is
- 10:05tired of taking orders and that from
- 10:07now on he will only worry about one
- 10:09person: himself. Thus, the thief
- 10:11manages to escape. A few days later,
- 10:13Peter receives terrible news. A thief
- 10:15surprised his Uncle Ben, and when he
- 10:17tried to stop him, he lost his life.
- 10:20Dressed as Spider-Man, Peter goes out
- 10:22in search of the culprit, but upon
- 10:24capturing him, he discovers it is the
- 10:26same thief he let escape days earlier,
- 10:28and then he understands what really
- 10:31happened. Ben, without powers and no
- 10:34way to defend himself, tried to stop
- 10:36the thief and lost his life. Peter,
- 10:38however, did have the strength to stop
- 10:41him, but he chose not to. From that
- 10:43moment on, he realizes that having
- 10:45power also means using it to protect
- 10:47those who cannot defend themselves. In
- 10:50other words, with great power comes
- 10:52great responsibility. That is how the
- 10:56first comic ends, but Spider-Man's
- 10:59story is just beginning because,
- 11:01against all odds, Amazing Fantasy
- 11:03number 15 becomes the publisher's
- 11:05best-selling issue. Seeing the success,
- 11:09Stan’s boss calls him to his office
- 11:11and says, "Stan, remember that
- 11:12character we liked so much? We need to
- 11:15give him his own series." And so, a few
- 11:18months later, The Amazing Spider-Man
- 11:20comic hits the stands. The first issue
- 11:24of The Amazing Spider-Man makes it
- 11:26clear that Peter is not a perfect hero,
- 11:27but a young man with very real problems
- 11:29. After Uncle Ben's death, Aunt May
- 11:32doesn't have the money to pay the bills
- 11:34. Peter wants to help her, and for a
- 11:36moment, he even considers robbing a
- 11:38bank. In the end, he regrets it because
- 11:40he doesn't want to become a criminal.
- 11:42The problem is that the publisher of
- 11:44the Daily Bugle is already convinced
- 11:45that Spider-Man is a criminal, and thus
- 11:47begins a campaign to present him to the
- 11:49city as a threat. And with this dynamic
- 11:52, one of the most recognizable and
- 11:54entertaining characters in the series
- 11:55appears: J. Jonah Jameson. As the story
- 11:59progresses, many others will be added,
- 12:00making the Spider-Man universe grow
- 12:02more and more. One of them is Flash
- 12:04Thompson, the star of the school's
- 12:05football team. Flash constantly teases
- 12:08Peter and calls him "Puny Parker." The
- 12:11irony is that he is also Spider-Man's
- 12:13number one fan, not knowing he has been
- 12:15bullying his favorite superhero the
- 12:17whole time. Also, to spark interest in
- 12:20this new character, Marvel includes the
- 12:23Fantastic Four in the first issue of
- 12:25The Amazing Spider-Man. Peter needs
- 12:27money and tries to join the team
- 12:28because he thinks they will pay him,
- 12:30but they explain that they don't even
- 12:32receive a salary. Here is a curious
- 12:34detail. If you notice, many of Marvel's
- 12:36first characters get their powers
- 12:38thanks to radiation. Peter is bitten by
- 12:40a radioactive spider. The Fantastic
- 12:43Four are exposed to cosmic rays. Hulk
- 12:46is born from gamma radiation, and
- 12:48Sandman changes after coming into
- 12:50contact with a nuclear reactor. And
- 12:52this is no coincidence. These stories
- 12:56appeared in the middle of the Cold War,
- 12:58when atomic bombs and nuclear energy
- 13:00generated as much fear as fascination.
- 13:03For the third issue of The Amazing
- 13:05Spider-Man, Stan Lee wants to create a
- 13:07villain who can really put Spider-Man
- 13:09on the ropes, someone capable of
- 13:11matching him in both intelligence and
- 13:13strength. Thus, one of his most iconic
- 13:16enemies is born, Doctor Octopus, a
- 13:18brilliant scientist who builds a
- 13:20harness with four mechanical arms.
- 13:23After an accident, the tentacles become
- 13:25fused to his body and he begins using
- 13:27them to commit crimes. If you think
- 13:29about it, even visually, they seem made
- 13:31to face each other. A spider against an
- 13:33octopus. Two creatures with eight limbs
- 13:36. Shortly after, in issue 14,
- 13:39Spider-Man's great archenemy, the Green
- 13:41Goblin, appears. He is one of Marvel's
- 13:44most famous villains, and part of this
- 13:46is due to his physical appearance.
- 13:48Originally, Stan Lee wanted the Goblin
- 13:51to be a demon or mythological creature,
- 13:53but Ditko insisted he be an ordinary
- 13:56human in a terrifying costume. The
- 13:58Green Goblin wants to become the leader
- 14:00of the criminal underworld, but to do
- 14:02so, he needs to eliminate Spider-Man.
- 14:04To achieve this, he tricks him with a
- 14:07fake offer to star in a movie for $
- 14:0950,000, a fortune for Peter and his
- 14:12financial problems. However, the
- 14:14supposed film shoot turns out to be an
- 14:17ambush where Hulk also appears. In the
- 14:20midst of the chaos, the Goblin escapes
- 14:22and Peter discovers the movie will
- 14:23never be made because the producer
- 14:25decided to replace Hulk with Spider-Man
- 14:26. The curious thing is that in this
- 14:29issue, it is never revealed who is
- 14:30behind the Green Goblin's mask, so
- 14:31readers begin to come up with their own
- 14:33theories. Some believe it could be J.
- 14:35Jonah Jameson or even Uncle Ben. And as
- 14:38that mystery continues to grow, Stan
- 14:40Lee and Steve Ditko realize Peter
- 14:42cannot stay in high school forever.
- 14:44They want him to grow with the story so
- 14:46that readers can accompany him through
- 14:48each new stage. That is why, in issue
- 14:5131, both Peter and the comic enter a
- 14:53second stage: young adulthood. Peter
- 14:56begins college, and with it come new
- 14:58romances and increasingly serious
- 15:01problems, such as substance abuse. At
- 15:04college, he meets Harry Osborn, a rich
- 15:06and cocky young man who lives
- 15:07frustrated because he feels his father
- 15:09despises him, though we still don't
- 15:11know who that father is. He also meets
- 15:14Gwen Stacy. At first, she and Harry
- 15:16treat him with contempt, but Peter is
- 15:18no longer the shy, insecure high school
- 15:20kid. Now he has more confidence and
- 15:22knows how to stand up for himself.
- 15:24Furthermore, Peter seems to be the only
- 15:26guy who pays no attention to Gwen,
- 15:27which makes her start to become
- 15:29interested in him. Over time, the three
- 15:31end up becoming great friends, although
- 15:33something more begins to arise between
- 15:35Peter and Gwen. In the midst of this,
- 15:37problems begin behind the scenes. Stan
- 15:40Lee and Steve Ditko no longer agree on
- 15:42the direction of the character or on
- 15:44who deserves the credit for his
- 15:46creation. So Ditko ends up leaving the
- 15:49series. Taking his place is John Romita
- 15:52Senior, who gives the comic a fresh
- 15:53look. And that is noticeable from his
- 15:56first issue, number 39, where he picks
- 15:58up the Green Goblin mystery. After more
- 16:00than 30 issues and almost 2 years, the
- 16:02revelation finally arrives. The Goblin
- 16:04captures Spider-Man, removes his mask,
- 16:06and discovers that he is actually Peter
- 16:08Parker. Convinced that he has already
- 16:10won, he unmasks himself as well. The
- 16:12Green Goblin is Norman Osborn, Harry's
- 16:15father. Peter manages to break free and
- 16:17they both face off. During the fight,
- 16:19they cause an explosion that leaves
- 16:21Norman unconscious. When he wakes up,
- 16:24he has forgotten that Peter is
- 16:25Spider-Man and that he himself is the
- 16:27Green Goblin. After this great start,
- 16:30Romita introduces new villains like
- 16:31Rhino, Shocker, and Kingpin. To create
- 16:34Kingpin, Stan Lee was looking for
- 16:35something different, an enemy who
- 16:37wasn't a mad scientist or a mutant, but
- 16:39a criminal who could exist in the real
- 16:40world. To design him, Romita was
- 16:42inspired by the actor Sydney
- 16:43Greenstreet in the movie The Maltese
- 16:45Falcon. And thus Wilson Fisk is born,
- 16:48the great crime boss of New York.
- 16:51Kingpin has no superpowers; his
- 16:52strength lies in his enormous size, his
- 16:54intelligence, his money, and the army
- 16:56of criminals he controls. Also, since
- 16:58Romita has a special talent for drawing
- 17:00female characters, he starts giving
- 17:01more weight to Peter's romances. And so
- 17:05, in issue 42, Peter finally meets Mary
- 17:07Jane Watson, a redhead who enters the
- 17:09story with one of the most famous lines
- 17:11in comics. Face it, tiger, you just hit
- 17:14the jackpot. However, at first, Peter
- 17:17and Mary Jane decide to remain just
- 17:18friends. Peter is in love with Gwen,
- 17:20and in issue 59, they finally start a
- 17:22relationship. Meanwhile, Mary Jane
- 17:25starts dating Harry Osborn. Today, when
- 17:28we think of Peter Parker's great love,
- 17:30Mary Jane almost always comes to mind,
- 17:32in large part thanks to Sam Raimi's
- 17:342000s films. But in the early comics,
- 17:36Gwen Stacy was Peter's great love, and
- 17:38everything seemed to indicate that she
- 17:40was his soulmate; what could go wrong?
- 17:42At the same time, Spider-Man makes the
- 17:44jump from comics to television with his
- 17:46first animated series, and his
- 17:48popularity skyrockets. The series
- 17:50leaves behind a theme song that
- 17:51everyone recognizes decades later.
- 17:55And it also gives us one of the most
- 17:57famous memes on the internet. In the
- 17:59episode "Double Identity," a criminal
- 18:00disguises himself as Spider-Man, and
- 18:02when the real one appears, they both
- 18:04point, saying, "That man is an impostor
- 18:06.""Meanwhile, in the comics, the drama
- 18:08reaches one of its most intense moments
- 18:10with the return of Doctor Octopus.
- 18:12During the final battle, one of his
- 18:14mechanical arms causes a building to
- 18:16collapse. The debris is about to crush
- 18:18a child, but George Stacy, Gwen's
- 18:20father and former police captain,
- 18:22manages to save him and takes the
- 18:24impact instead. As he lies dying,
- 18:26George asks Spider-Man to take care of
- 18:27his daughter. So at that moment, Peter
- 18:30understands that George always knew who
- 18:32was hiding behind the mask. The problem
- 18:34is that Gwen believes Spider-Man is
- 18:36responsible for her father's death, and
- 18:38Peter, who already blames himself for
- 18:40not being able to save him, is
- 18:42devastated to hear her blame Spider-Man
- 18:44. And the relationship between them
- 18:45breaks down. Gwen feels abandoned, and
- 18:48in issue 93, she moves to London to try
- 18:50to overcome the loss, but Peter cannot
- 18:52forget her. He travels to England to
- 18:56find her, and finally, Gwen returns to
- 18:58New York. While all this is happening
- 19:01within Peter's story, outside the pages
- 19:03, Stan Lee receives an unexpected
- 19:04request. The National Institute of
- 19:07Mental Health proposes using the comic
- 19:09to talk about drug use, and he loves
- 19:11the idea of using his stories to touch
- 19:13on real problems. The problem is that
- 19:15the Comics Code Authority, in charge of
- 19:17approving comic book content, does not
- 19:19allow the topic to be mentioned. Even
- 19:21so, Stan decides to publish the story
- 19:23without their seal. In it, Harry goes
- 19:26through one of the worst moments of his
- 19:28life. Mary Jane breaks up with him and
- 19:30starts flirting with his best friend,
- 19:32Peter. At the same time, his
- 19:34relationship with his father worsens
- 19:35and the pressure of college starts to
- 19:36overwhelm him. Desperate to escape it
- 19:39all, he accepts some pills offered to
- 19:41him by a classmate. As Harry falls
- 19:43deeper into addiction, Norman Osborn
- 19:45also loses control. The pain over what
- 19:48his son is going through reawakens the
- 19:50Green Goblin, who recovers his memories
- 19:52and returns to seek revenge against
- 19:54Peter. Readers love that Spider-Man
- 19:57dares to talk about such real topics;
- 19:59however, this is also one of the last
- 20:02stories Stan writes for the character,
- 20:04as after almost 10 years, he stops
- 20:06being the lead writer and goes on to
- 20:09run Marvel. The series is left in the
- 20:12hands of other writers who begin to
- 20:13take it down increasingly mature and
- 20:15dark paths. Thus we enter the third
- 20:18stage, adulthood, where Peter loses
- 20:20people he loves, gets married, faces
- 20:22increasingly disturbing enemies, and
- 20:24learns that no matter how hard he tries
- 20:26, he won't always be able to save
- 20:28everyone. And so we reach issue 121 of
- 20:31The Amazing Spider-Man, where one of
- 20:33the most painful arcs in history begins
- 20:36. The Green Goblin captures Gwen Stacy
- 20:39and takes her to the top of a bridge.
- 20:42Spider-Man arrives to rescue her, but
- 20:44during the fight, Norman throws her
- 20:46into the void. Peter shoots a web and
- 20:49manages to stop her fall. For an
- 20:50instant, he thinks he has saved her,
- 20:52but next to Gwen's neck a single word
- 20:54appears," snap, "and when he pulls her
- 20:56back up, he discovers she is no longer
- 20:58breathing. The most tragic part is that
- 21:01Marvel confirms Gwen did not die from
- 21:03the fall. She died because the web
- 21:05stopped her body abruptly, but her head
- 21:07kept moving, and the impact broke her
- 21:09neck. In other words, by trying to save
- 21:13her, Peter ended up causing her death.
- 21:16Gwen's death changes superhero stories
- 21:18forever. Until that moment, the beloved
- 21:20person was almost always rescued at the
- 21:22last second. This time, Spider-Man did
- 21:24everything possible to save her and
- 21:26still couldn't prevent the tragedy,
- 21:28because no matter how many powers he
- 21:30has, Peter is still human. From then on
- 21:33, Spider-Man's stories start to become
- 21:35darker and introduce increasingly
- 21:36complex characters. Thus, in issue 129
- 21:39of The Amazing Spider-Man, Frank Castle
- 21:42, better known as The Punisher, appears
- 21:45for the first time. To create him, they
- 21:47were inspired by Mack Bolan, the
- 21:49protagonist of the novel The
- 21:50Executioner, a Vietnam War veteran
- 21:52whose family was murdered by the mafia.
- 21:55They also took elements from vigilante
- 21:56cinema, very popular in the 70s, where
- 21:58ordinary men decided to take justice
- 22:00into their own hands and operate above
- 22:02the law. Thus was born Frank Castle,
- 22:05another Vietnam veteran who, after
- 22:06losing his family at the hands of the
- 22:08mafia, vows to end criminals by
- 22:09resorting to violence and murder. Over
- 22:12time, The Punisher becomes one of
- 22:14Marvel's most popular anti-heroes, and
- 22:17in 1986, he gets his own comic book
- 22:19series. But let's return to Stan Lee.
- 22:22As head of Marvel, he promotes a new
- 22:23series to bring together his most
- 22:25popular heroes, Marvel Team-Up. And
- 22:28since Spider-Man is already a fan
- 22:29favorite, he becomes its main
- 22:31protagonist, sharing adventures with
- 22:32characters like the Human Torch, the
- 22:34X-Men, and Thor. From here on, Peter's
- 22:36adventures are no longer told solely in
- 22:38The Amazing Spider-Man. Little by
- 22:40little, other series appear, such as
- 22:42Peter Parker: The Spectacular
- 22:43Spider-Man and Spidey Super Stories.
- 22:46With so many stories being published at
- 22:48the same time, the world of Spider-Man
- 22:49starts to grow in different directions
- 22:51and becomes increasingly difficult to
- 22:52follow. But this expansion will also
- 22:55have a great advantage. Over the years,
- 22:57Marvel would accumulate hundreds of
- 22:59characters, villains, and plotlines.
- 23:01Thus, when Spider-Man reached the big
- 23:03screen, the movies had plenty of
- 23:05material to choose from. By then, the
- 23:07character was already everywhere. His
- 23:09face appeared on action figures,
- 23:10underwear, vitamins, and even rolls of
- 23:12toilet paper. In 1977, he made the leap
- 23:15to television with live-action actors.
- 23:18The first movie was so successful that
- 23:19CBS decided to turn it into a series
- 23:21starring Nicholas Hammond. That same
- 23:24year, Stan Lee brought Spider-Man to
- 23:25another medium: newspapers. With his
- 23:28own comic strip, the character reached
- 23:30millions of people who had never bought
- 23:31one of his comics. And as Spider-Man
- 23:34conquered new media, his world within
- 23:36Marvel continued to grow. By the 80s,
- 23:39he was ready to participate in one of
- 23:41the publisher's most important events:
- 23:43Secret Wars. It all started when toy
- 23:46company Mattel wanted to launch a new
- 23:48line of action figures and asked Marvel
- 23:49for a story that would bring together
- 23:51their most famous characters. Thus was
- 23:54born Secret Wars, a 12-issue series in
- 23:56which Marvel's most important heroes
- 23:58and villains are transported to
- 24:00Battleworld, an artificial planet where
- 24:02the Beyonder forces them to fight. In
- 24:05the middle of the battle, Dr. Doom, one
- 24:07of the Fantastic Four's great villains,
- 24:10takes advantage of the chaos to steal
- 24:12the Beyonder's powers and briefly
- 24:14becomes the most powerful being in the
- 24:17universe. However, the Beyonder ends up
- 24:19reclaiming them and sends everyone back
- 24:21to Earth. This story, along with the
- 24:23new version of Secret Wars published in
- 24:252015, will serve as inspiration for the
- 24:27Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret
- 24:29Wars films. If you would like us to
- 24:31make a video later analyzing both
- 24:33comics, let me know in the comments.
- 24:35But returning to Spider-Man for our
- 24:36story, the most important thing happens
- 24:38in issue number eight. During a battle,
- 24:41Peter tears his uniform and finds a
- 24:43strange black substance that creates a
- 24:45new suit. At first, the suit seems
- 24:47perfect; it changes shape just by
- 24:49thinking about it and even produces its
- 24:51own webs. What Peter doesn't know yet
- 24:53is that it’s not a suit, but a living
- 24:55being. When he returns to Earth and his
- 24:58own comics, he begins to feel exhausted
- 25:00and increasingly strange. Worried, he
- 25:02goes to Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic,
- 25:04who discovers that the substance is an
- 25:06alien symbiote, an organism that has
- 25:08bonded with Peter physically and
- 25:10mentally. Worse still, while Peter
- 25:13sleeps, the symbiote takes control of
- 25:15his body and goes out to fight crime.
- 25:18He manages to separate them and locks
- 25:19the creature away at the Fantastic
- 25:21Four's headquarters. But the symbiote
- 25:22escapes and comes looking for Peter
- 25:24again. Desperate to get it off,
- 25:26Spider-Man reaches a church bell tower
- 25:28and uses the loud sound of the bells to
- 25:30weaken it. The blows leave Peter
- 25:32unconscious, but before leaving, the
- 25:34symbiote puts him to safety and hides
- 25:36in the church. Remember this detail
- 25:40well because it will be very important
- 25:42later when a man named Eddie Brock
- 25:44enters the scene. All of this reflects
- 25:46an important shift, the change to much
- 25:48darker Spider-Man stories during the
- 25:5080s. One of the best examples is the
- 25:53Jean DeWolff arc. Jean is a New York
- 25:55police captain and an old ally of
- 25:57Spider-Man. But this time, the story
- 25:58doesn't wait until the end to put her
- 26:00in danger. It starts by revealing that
- 26:02she has been killed. From there, Peter
- 26:04tries to find the culprit and ends up
- 26:06uncovering a web of violence and
- 26:07corruption within the police force
- 26:09itself. With all this, the comic
- 26:12stopped feeling like a simple fight
- 26:13against a villain and became a much
- 26:15more serious story about guilt and the
- 26:17search for justice. But Marvel also
- 26:19takes advantage of this darker tone to
- 26:21talk about real-world problems. The
- 26:22publisher participates in campaigns to
- 26:25prevent suicide, bullying, and child
- 26:28abuse. One of the best-known comes in
- 26:301984 with the special comic Spider-Man
- 26:33and Power Pack. In this story, Peter
- 26:36reveals that as a child, he also
- 26:37suffered from abuse by someone close to
- 26:39him. The goal is to teach children to
- 26:42recognize these situations, protect
- 26:43themselves, and ask for help. A comic
- 26:45that for many made him go from being a
- 26:47fictional hero to a real-life one. In
- 26:501987, a much happier moment arrives.
- 26:53After years of stories together, Peter
- 26:55finally proposes to Mary Jane. The
- 26:57wedding becomes a major event, and not
- 26:59just in the comics. Marvel organizes a
- 27:02ceremony at Shea Stadium in Queens,
- 27:05where two actors play the couple and
- 27:07Stan Lee marries them in front of the
- 27:10public. But while Peter is living one
- 27:13of the happiest moments of his life,
- 27:14Kraven's Last Hunt arrives, one of the
- 27:16darkest stories in the saga. Kraven the
- 27:19Hunter is no longer satisfied with just
- 27:20defeating Spider-Man. He needs to prove
- 27:23he can be better than him, so he
- 27:24paralyzes him, buries him alive, and
- 27:26takes his place for two weeks. But
- 27:28Peter survives and manages to escape
- 27:30from the grave. When he returns to
- 27:32confront him, Kraven refuses to fight.
- 27:34He is convinced he has already proven
- 27:36his superiority and shortly after takes
- 27:38his own life. The story becomes one of
- 27:41the most famous Spider-Man tales
- 27:43because, as we can see, it takes the
- 27:45character into much more serious and
- 27:46adult territory. Shortly after, another
- 27:50key moment arrives in issues 299 and
- 27:52300 of Amazing Spider-Man, where Venom
- 27:54finally appears. At first, the writers
- 27:57imagined the character as a woman who
- 27:59blames Spider-Man for her husband's
- 28:01death. However, they changed course and
- 28:04created Eddie Brock, a reporter whose
- 28:06career is ruined because of the hero.
- 28:09Eddie hits rock bottom, and while
- 28:10looking for answers in a church, he
- 28:12encounters the symbiote that Peter had
- 28:13rejected. The two share the same
- 28:16resentment, so they unite to take
- 28:18revenge on Spider-Man. Over time, Venom
- 28:20becomes one of the fans 'favorite
- 28:22characters. Although he is born as a
- 28:25villain, he gradually becomes an
- 28:27anti-hero and even ends up starring in
- 28:29his own movies. And here we reach the
- 28:32fourth stage of the character, his
- 28:35midlife crisis. You see, after decades
- 28:37of telling stories about Peter Parker,
- 28:39the writers seem to start running out
- 28:41of ideas and jump into increasingly
- 28:43exaggerated concepts. Some work quite
- 28:46well, like his adventures with the
- 28:48Avengers, but others seem straight out
- 28:50of a soap opera with clones,
- 28:51pregnancies, fake deaths, and identity
- 28:53changes that end up becoming some of
- 28:55the most hated plots in comics. In this
- 28:58stage, Marvel keeps looking for ways to
- 29:00keep him relevant. Thus is born Revenge
- 29:03of the Sinister Six, where Doctor
- 29:05Octopus gathers Electro, Sandman,
- 29:07Mysterio, the Vulture, and the
- 29:09Hobgoblin to finish off Spider-Man.
- 29:11Does that sound familiar? Decades later
- 29:14, a version of this group would reach
- 29:15the big screen, but we will get to that
- 29:17later. For now, Spider-Man also begins
- 29:20to get closer to the Avengers, with
- 29:21whom he fights during The Infinity
- 29:23Gauntlet, and you surely already know
- 29:25where all this is heading. In this
- 29:27story, Thanos gathers the six Infinity
- 29:28Stones and gains the power to eliminate
- 29:30half of the living beings in the
- 29:32universe. Although Spider-Man is not
- 29:34yet part of the Avengers, he fights
- 29:36alongside them to stop him. Then the
- 29:39writers introduce Carnage, a villain so
- 29:41violent that he makes Venom look
- 29:42harmless. You see, Cletus Kasady is a
- 29:45serial killer who was a cellmate of
- 29:47Eddie and Venom when they were detained
- 29:49on Ryker's Island. Venom eventually
- 29:52escapes, but leaves something behind, a
- 29:54child of the symbiote named Carnage.
- 29:58Unlike Venom, Carnage is red, is
- 29:59stronger than Venom, and his suit can
- 30:01create a wide variety of weapons. He
- 30:05becomes the main villain, someone who
- 30:06is truly scary because his actions have
- 30:08no motivation. Carnage kills simply
- 30:11because he can. Marvel didn't expect it
- 30:14, but this comic became a hit. The
- 30:17Carnage fever reaches its peak in 1993
- 30:21with the 14-part story called Maximum
- 30:24Carnage. In this arc, Spider-Man and
- 30:26Venom join forces for the first time to
- 30:28stop Carnage's reign of terror. But
- 30:30they can't do it alone, so they recruit
- 30:32a team consisting of Captain America,
- 30:34Cloak and Dagger, Deathlok, Firestar,
- 30:36Iron Fist, Morbius, and Nightwatch. At
- 30:39the same time, they launch a new series
- 30:41called Marvel 2099, the first time they
- 30:43dare to create a new universe to tell
- 30:45the story of Marvel superheroes from
- 30:47scratch in the year 2099. Here,
- 30:51Spider-Man is no longer Peter Parker,
- 30:53but Miguel O'Hara, a genetic engineer
- 30:55of Mexican and Irish descent. Miguel
- 30:57works at Alchemax, where they seek to
- 30:59create genetically enhanced humans
- 31:01using the DNA of the 20 th-century
- 31:02Spider-Man. Miguel tries to quit, but
- 31:05his boss drugs him with a highly
- 31:07addictive substance only produced at
- 31:09Alchemax, forcing him to stay. One
- 31:11night, he is in the lab trying to
- 31:12remove the substance from his body
- 31:14through genetic experimentation. His
- 31:16rival finds him and sabotages his
- 31:17treatment by introducing Spider-Man's
- 31:19DNA into his genetic code. This causes
- 31:22an explosion, and out of the smoke
- 31:24emerges Miguel O'Hara, now with fangs
- 31:26and claws. In this series, Miguel faces
- 31:28futuristic versions of the Green Goblin
- 31:30, Venom, and the Vulture. The series
- 31:32continues for 4 years and they even do
- 31:35a crossover where Peter Parker and
- 31:37Miguel O'Hara meet, but eventually, fan
- 31:40interest in Marvel 2099 comes to an end
- 31:42, at least for now. Meanwhile, in the
- 31:45other comic series, Aunt May receives a
- 31:47visit from a mysterious person. We
- 31:50never see his face until Peter Parker
- 31:52finally comes face-to-face with this
- 31:55man, who turns out to be Peter Parker.
- 31:58It is actually Ben Reilly, his clone,
- 32:00who adopts the identity of Scarlet
- 32:02Spider to fight crime alongside Peter.
- 32:05More than a superhero comic arc, the
- 32:06truth is that this story seems lifted
- 32:08from a soap opera. So many things
- 32:10happen. Ben Reilly becomes the Scarlet
- 32:12Spider. Mary Jane is pregnant, Aunt May
- 32:14passes away, and Peter discovers that
- 32:16he is actually Ben's clone. After all
- 32:19this, in issue 229 of The Spectacular
- 32:21Spider-Man, Peter abandons the
- 32:23Spider-Man mantle and moves to Oregon
- 32:25with Mary Jane to have their baby in a
- 32:27quieter place. But New York is not left
- 32:30without the superhero, since Scarlet
- 32:31Spider is there. So, the Spider-Man
- 32:34titles become Scarlet Spider comics
- 32:37until 1996, when Ben Reilly adopts the
- 32:40Spider-Man identity. Then the secret is
- 32:43revealed. Norman Osborn is alive and is
- 32:45the mastermind behind all the chaos.
- 32:48Then Norman murders Ben Reilly, Peter
- 32:50returns as Spider-Man, and Mary Jane
- 32:53loses the baby. So nothing really
- 32:56changed. And yes, as you are imagining,
- 32:59this is remembered as one of the worst
- 33:01Spider-Man plots for being
- 33:03unnecessarily complicated and
- 33:05melodramatic. Fortunately, something
- 33:07else happens in this decade that
- 33:09distracts everyone from the Clone Saga
- 33:11disaster. In 1998, the world meets May
- 33:13Parker, the daughter of Peter and Mary
- 33:15Jane. Although in the main universe the
- 33:18baby had not survived, the writers keep
- 33:20wondering what would have happened if
- 33:21she had. So they write a comic about
- 33:24this idea. May Parker inherits her
- 33:26dad's powers, but her dad forbids her
- 33:28from using them. He feels she is too
- 33:30young to fight crime. Obviously, May
- 33:33doesn't listen to him and becomes
- 33:34Spider-Girl. From this emerges a new
- 33:37Marvel universe called the MC2, where
- 33:39they introduce the new generation of
- 33:42Avengers, who, like May Parker, are
- 33:44children of the original superheroes.
- 33:47But Spider-Girl is the most popular. In
- 33:49fact, she is the female Marvel
- 33:50character with the longest-running
- 33:52series, with 100 comics. Meanwhile, at
- 33:54Marvel, they face a new problem: how to
- 33:57make a new audience interested in
- 33:59Spider-Man, a character much older than
- 34:02them. So they create the concept of
- 34:04Year One, which is basically a reboot
- 34:06of the original story, adapting it to
- 34:09feel more modern. Spider-Man: Chapter
- 34:11One goes on sale in December 1998.
- 34:15Although they do a good job adapting
- 34:17the story, sales keep declining, as
- 34:18young people are no longer buying
- 34:20comics—not just Spider-Man's, but the
- 34:22comic book industry in general begins
- 34:24to experience a severe drop. However,
- 34:27the solution lies in something that
- 34:29will change Spider-Man's history
- 34:31forever: cinema. Proof of this is the
- 34:34Blade movie. It premieres that same
- 34:36year and becomes the first Marvel film
- 34:39to achieve true box office success. Its
- 34:42warm reception sparks the interest of
- 34:44studios, and soon after, an X-Men
- 34:46adaptation begins development. When
- 34:49that also triumphs with critics and
- 34:51audiences alike, a new era for
- 34:53superhero movies begins. Now the time
- 34:55has finally come for Marvel's most
- 34:57beloved superhero to shine on the big
- 34:59screen, although the idea of bringing
- 35:01him to cinema had been circulating for
- 35:03decades. Since the late 70s, and
- 35:05especially after the success of
- 35:06Superman, Marvel wanted to bring its
- 35:08characters to the movies. And of course
- 35:10, one of the first candidates was
- 35:12Spider-Man. A producer asked Lee to
- 35:14write the script. However, after the
- 35:17commercial failure of Superman III, no
- 35:18one wanted to risk financing another
- 35:20superhero movie, and the project ended
- 35:22up sinking. But that was just the first
- 35:25of several failed attempts. Some time
- 35:27later, another studio picked up the
- 35:28idea, though with a rather strange
- 35:30twist. They wanted to turn Spider-Man
- 35:33into a horror movie. They even hired
- 35:35the director of The Texas Chain Saw
- 35:38Massacre 2. Stan Lee hated the proposal
- 35:41and demanded a version much closer to
- 35:43the comics. Thus began a third attempt,
- 35:45now under the direction of Joseph Zito.
- 35:48He wanted Tom Cruise as Peter Parker,
- 35:50but constant budget cuts ended the film
- 35:53once again. In the early 90s, the
- 35:56project was resurrected for a fourth
- 35:58time, now in the hands of James Cameron
- 35:59. The director imagined Leonardo
- 36:02DiCaprio as Peter Parker and proposed a
- 36:04much more adult version of the story
- 36:06that included an intimate scene between
- 36:07Peter and Mary Jane on the Brooklyn
- 36:09Bridge. Additionally, Spider-Man would
- 36:12face Electro and Sandman. For a moment,
- 36:15it seemed this version would finally
- 36:17reach theaters, but Fox, the studio
- 36:18Cameron was working with, failed to
- 36:20secure the rights to the character. So
- 36:23the director abandoned the film and
- 36:25focused on another story you might know
- 36:27. Titanic. It wasn't until 1998 with
- 36:31the release of Blade that Hollywood
- 36:33became seriously interested in
- 36:34superhero movies again. By then, Marvel
- 36:38was bankrupt and ended up selling the
- 36:39film rights for Spider-Man to Sony to
- 36:41try to dig itself out of ruin. And Sony
- 36:44didn't waste any time; they considered
- 36:46Michael Bay, Tim Burton, David Fincher,
- 36:48and Baz Luhrmann. In other words, they
- 36:50sought out some of the most
- 36:51sought-after directors in Hollywood,
- 36:53but there was one who wanted the job
- 36:55more than anyone: Sam Raimi, who had
- 36:57been a fan of the comics since he was a
- 36:59boy. During a meeting with Sony and
- 37:01Marvel Films, Sam spent nearly an hour
- 37:02explaining why he was the right person
- 37:04to direct the film. And when he
- 37:06finished speaking, everyone agreed.
- 37:08They had finally found their director.
- 37:11Sam decided to stay quite faithful to
- 37:13the original comics. The film follows
- 37:15almost step by step The Origin of the
- 37:17Hero, the spider bite, his time in
- 37:19wrestling, and the death of Uncle Ben
- 37:21at the hands of the thief Peter let go.
- 37:23However, it also takes several ideas
- 37:25from Ultimate Spider-Man, a comic book
- 37:27reboot that modernizes the story. Even
- 37:30so, Sam makes some important changes.
- 37:32For starters, Peter no longer builds
- 37:34his web-shooters. In this version, the
- 37:36webs come out organically from his
- 37:38wrists, an ability similar to that of
- 37:39Miguel O'Hara in the Spider-Man 2099
- 37:41comics. He also takes some traits from
- 37:44Gwen Stacy and gives them to Mary Jane
- 37:46Watson, who becomes Peter's main love
- 37:47interest. As the project takes shape,
- 37:50it is time to choose the cast. Sony
- 37:52proposes actors like Heath Ledger, Jude
- 37:54Law, and Ewan McGregor to Sam. However,
- 37:56he already has someone in mind, a young
- 37:58actor named Tobey Maguire. At first,
- 38:01Sony is not convinced, but Tobey
- 38:03surprises them during his audition and
- 38:06ends up landing the role. To play
- 38:08Norman Osborn, they choose Willem Dafoe
- 38:10, who becomes so committed to the film
- 38:13that he refuses to leave the Green
- 38:15Goblin suit to a stunt double. He
- 38:17insists on putting it on himself and
- 38:19performing the villain's scenes
- 38:21personally, even though it is not easy
- 38:23at all. The suit is made up of 580
- 38:26pieces and it takes about half an hour
- 38:27to put it on, though the suit also
- 38:29causes some problems. Since it is green
- 38:32, they cannot film him in front of a
- 38:34green screen. That is why, in several
- 38:36digital scenes, they have to film
- 38:37Spider-Man and the Goblin separately.
- 38:39For the role of Mary Jane, they
- 38:41consider actresses like Jaime King,
- 38:42Kate Hudson, and Julia Stiles, but they
- 38:44ultimately choose Kirsten Dunst. During
- 38:46filming, she and Tobey Maguire fall in
- 38:48love and begin a relationship.
- 38:50Additionally, together they film one of
- 38:52the most memorable scenes in the movie.
- 38:53Mary Jane slips in the cafeteria and
- 38:55Peter manages to catch her along with
- 38:57all her food before she hits the floor.
- 38:59And although it looks like a special
- 39:01effect, Tobey Maguire really does catch
- 39:04the tray. To achieve this, they glue
- 39:06his hand to it and repeat the take 156
- 39:09times over 16 hours until finally all
- 39:11the food falls in the right place. That
- 39:15attention to detail, added to Sam's
- 39:17respect for the comics, makes the film
- 39:19a resounding success, which paves the
- 39:21way for Spider-Man 2, inspired by the
- 39:23comic" Spider-Man No More, "where Peter
- 39:25gets tired of his life as a hero
- 39:27destroying everything. The sequel
- 39:30succeeds again and ends up being
- 39:32considered one of the best superhero
- 39:33movies in history. Then comes
- 39:36Spider-Man 3, which pits Peter against
- 39:38Sandman, the new Green Goblin, and
- 39:41Venom, marking the end of Tobey Maguire
- 39:43as Spider-Man. That is how a trilogy
- 39:46ended, one that a whole generation grew
- 39:48up with and is still remembered with
- 39:50great fondness today. However, Sam
- 39:52Raimi's saga was not intended to end
- 39:54there. After so much success, Sony
- 39:57launched a fourth film, once again with
- 39:59Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. The
- 40:01problem is that Sam is not satisfied
- 40:03with the script. He asks the studio for
- 40:05more time, but Sony refuses. And since
- 40:08he cannot tell the story he wants, Sam
- 40:09leaves the project and Tobey Maguire
- 40:11withdraws with him. But Sony needs to
- 40:14release a Spider-Man movie every so
- 40:16often; otherwise, the character's
- 40:18rights return to Marvel. So the studio
- 40:21takes the fastest way out: starting
- 40:23from scratch. They hire Marc Webb,
- 40:26director of 500 Days of Summer, and
- 40:27begin looking for their new Spider-Man.
- 40:30For the role of Peter, they consider
- 40:31actors like Josh Hutcherson, Drake Bell
- 40:33, Joe Jonas, and Logan Lerman. But
- 40:35Andrew Garfield ends up getting the
- 40:38part thanks to his humor and, above all
- 40:40, the way he moves. Since Spider-Man
- 40:43spends much of the movie behind a mask,
- 40:44Webb needs someone capable of
- 40:46expressing themselves with their whole
- 40:47body, and Andrew pulls it off.
- 40:49Furthermore, his Peter Parker is very
- 40:51different from Tobey Maguire's. He is
- 40:52no longer so shy or completely isolated
- 40:55from others. He is more sarcastic,
- 40:57rebellious, and has a much more
- 40:59alternative style. To play Gwen Stacy,
- 41:01Peter's new love interest, they
- 41:03consider several actresses, including
- 41:05Lily Collins and Mia Wasikowska.
- 41:08However, when Emma Stone does a screen
- 41:09test with Andrew, the chemistry between
- 41:11them is evident, and she ends up
- 41:12getting the role. In fact, during
- 41:15filming, they also begin a relationship
- 41:17in real life. When The Amazing
- 41:19Spider-Man hits theaters, it's clear
- 41:21the public still wants to see more of
- 41:24Spider-Man, so Sony doesn't wait long
- 41:26to start a sequel. This time the story
- 41:28approaches one of the character's most
- 41:30tragic moments. Harry Osborn becomes
- 41:32the Green Goblin, captures Gwen, and
- 41:34drops her from the top of a tower.
- 41:37Peter manages to reach her with a web,
- 41:38but it is already too late and Gwen
- 41:40dies. The scene recreates her famous
- 41:42death that we discussed earlier from
- 41:43the 1973 comics. Even Emma Stone's
- 41:46wardrobe is inspired by what Gwen wears
- 41:48in those pages. However, despite being
- 41:51based on one of the character's most
- 41:53beloved stories, the film failed to
- 41:54convince the audience, which became a
- 41:56huge problem for Sony. The studio had
- 41:59already announced two more films
- 42:01scheduled for 2016 and 2018. In them,
- 42:04Peter would face the loss of Gwen and
- 42:06begin a new relationship with Mary Jane
- 42:08Watson, played by Shailene Woodley.
- 42:10Marc Webb also planned to introduce
- 42:12Venom, Black Cat, and the Sinister Six,
- 42:14but after the poor reception of the
- 42:16second film, all those plans vanished,
- 42:18and with them, the possibility of
- 42:20Andrew Garfield becoming the official
- 42:22Spider-Man of the Marvel Cinematic
- 42:23Universe, which was just beginning to
- 42:25take shape at the time, also
- 42:27disappeared. The idea is not so
- 42:30far-fetched. The Amazing Spider-Man and
- 42:33The Avengers were both released in 2012
- 42:35, and there was even a rumor that
- 42:36Oscorp Tower was going to appear
- 42:38briefly in The Avengers to imply that
- 42:40both stories took place in the same
- 42:42universe, but that connection never
- 42:43happened. In addition to losing his
- 42:47subsequent films, Andrew Garfield also
- 42:49lost the chance to become the Avengers'
- 42:51Spider-Man. Even so, Sony and Marvel
- 42:53finally reached an agreement to share
- 42:55the character and bring him into the
- 42:57Marvel Cinematic Universe. There was
- 43:00only one condition: they had to start
- 43:02over from scratch with a new Peter
- 43:04Parker. But before we get there, let's
- 43:06go back to the comics. By this time,
- 43:08Peter enters the fifth and final stage
- 43:11of his life: that of a mentor. It all
- 43:14begins in the Spider-Men miniseries,
- 43:16where the Peter Parker from Earth-616
- 43:18travels to the Ultimate universe and
- 43:20meets Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino
- 43:22teenager with powers similar to his own
- 43:24. Miles gains his abilities after being
- 43:27bitten by a genetically modified spider
- 43:30that accidentally ends up in the home
- 43:32of his uncle, Aaron Davis, who is
- 43:34secretly the thief known as the Prowler
- 43:37. In addition to strength and agility,
- 43:39Miles can turn invisible. At first, he
- 43:41does not want to become a superhero,
- 43:43but when his universe's Spider-Man dies
- 43:44, he realizes someone must take his
- 43:46place. When Peter meets Miles, he is at
- 43:49first surprised to discover that
- 43:50another Spider-Man exists. However, he
- 43:53soon begins to guide him and teaches
- 43:54him the true meaning of the phrase,"
- 43:56With great power comes great
- 43:57responsibility. "After so many years of
- 44:01facing loss and learning from his
- 44:02mistakes, Peter can finally become the
- 44:04figure he never had: a mentor for the
- 44:06next generation. This relationship
- 44:09continues in Spider-Man 2. After the
- 44:11events of Secret Wars, Miles arrives in
- 44:13Peter's universe, and both continue to
- 44:15share the name Spider-Man. Since then,
- 44:18Peter acts as his guide and at times as
- 44:20a figure. paternal. Regarding the new
- 44:23movie, the first challenge is to find
- 44:25the new Peter Parker. More than 15
- 44:27actors audition, but only six make it
- 44:29to the final stage. Among them is Tom
- 44:32Holland, who has a great advantage.
- 44:34Thanks to his training in ballet,
- 44:36musical theater, and gymnastics, he can
- 44:38do his own stunts. In the final
- 44:40audition, he shares the scene with
- 44:42Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans. He
- 44:43improvises with Downey with total
- 44:45naturalness and then surprises Evans
- 44:47with a backflip. With that, he finally
- 44:49convinces them. Tom debuts in Captain
- 44:52America: Civil War and a year later
- 44:54premieres his first solo movie,
- 44:55Spider-Man: Homecoming. This version
- 44:58also changes his love interest. Instead
- 45:00of repeating the story of Peter and
- 45:02Mary Jane, they create a new character,
- 45:04Michelle Jones, played by Zendaya.
- 45:06Although everyone knows her as MJ,
- 45:08producer Kevin Feige clarifies that it
- 45:10is not Mary Jane Watson. The nickname
- 45:12is simply a tribute to Peter's most
- 45:14famous love interest in the comics. And
- 45:17as it already seems to be a tradition
- 45:18in these films, Tom Holland and Zendaya
- 45:20also begin a relationship off-screen.
- 45:22Years later they get engaged and by
- 45:242026 they are already married. Another
- 45:26important change is that this version
- 45:28skips the traditional Spider-Man origin
- 45:30. We don't see the spider bite again or
- 45:33the moment when Peter discovers his
- 45:34powers. When we meet him, he has
- 45:36already been fighting crime for a while
- 45:38. However, the three films end up
- 45:40telling another type of origin. At the
- 45:43end of No Way Home, Peter must make a
- 45:45decision to repair the multiverse: make
- 45:47the whole world forget who he is. By
- 45:50then he has already lost Aunt May and
- 45:51now he must also walk away from his
- 45:53friends and the woman he loves. And so,
- 45:56in the final scene, we see him living
- 45:58alone in a small New York apartment and
- 46:00hand-sewing his own red and blue suit.
- 46:03He no longer has Tony Stark's
- 46:05technology, powerful contacts, or
- 46:06anyone to rescue him. It is right there
- 46:09when Peter finally becomes the
- 46:11independent Spider-Man from the comics.
- 46:13That is why, for many, the trilogy
- 46:15works as a kind of origin story that
- 46:17little by little leads him to the
- 46:19classic Spider-Man. And that is
- 46:21precisely the Peter Parker we see in
- 46:23the fourth film. Spider-Man: A New Day.
- 46:26But while Tom Holland stars in this new
- 46:29stage, Sony also works on another
- 46:31version of the character. In 2018, they
- 46:34release Spider-Man: Into the
- 46:36Spider-Verse, which quickly becomes one
- 46:38of the most recognized superhero films.
- 46:42This time the protagonist is Miles
- 46:43Morales, that young Afro-Latino who
- 46:45first appeared in comics in 2011.
- 46:48Curiously, one of the inspirations for
- 46:50creating him came from an episode of
- 46:52Community in which Donald Glover
- 46:53appeared wearing Spider-Man pajamas.
- 46:56Upon seeing it, writer Brian Michael
- 46:57Bendis began developing the idea of a
- 46:59new Spider-Man. The film was in
- 47:02production for several years, as its
- 47:03creators needed time to develop its
- 47:05visual style. Instead of using
- 47:08traditional 3D animation, they mixed 2D
- 47:10and 3D elements so that each scene
- 47:13looked like a moving comic book page.
- 47:16The result drew so much attention that
- 47:18it won the Oscar for Best Animated
- 47:20Feature in 2019. Meanwhile, in the
- 47:23comics, we find Peter at a very
- 47:25different point in his life. The series
- 47:27Spider-Man: Life Story, published in
- 47:292019, poses a quite interesting
- 47:31question. What would have happened if
- 47:33Peter Parker had aged in real time
- 47:35since he received his powers in 1962?
- 47:39In the sixth issue, we meet a 72-
- 47:41year-old Peter who still protects New
- 47:43York and acts as a mentor to Miles
- 47:45Morales. In this universe, Earth lives
- 47:48under the constant threat of Dr. Doom,
- 47:50so Peter, Miles, and Jessica Jones
- 47:52organize an attack on his space station
- 47:54, but upon arriving, they face a dying
- 47:56Otto Octavius, who captures Miles.
- 47:59Peter tries to reason with him and begs
- 48:01him to remember what it once meant to
- 48:03be a true scientist and hero. At the
- 48:05last moment, Otto releases the young
- 48:07man. However, the station is about to
- 48:09explode. Peter gathers his last bit of
- 48:11strength and pushes Miles into an
- 48:13escape pod, sacrificing himself so he
- 48:15can reach Earth safe and sound. Thus,
- 48:17Peter permanently hands over the
- 48:19responsibility of Spider-Man to a new
- 48:21generation represented by Miles Morales
- 48:23. Although Life Story does not belong
- 48:26to the main continuity, it functions as
- 48:28a possible conclusion to Peter Parker's
- 48:30entire life. It begins as a teenager
- 48:32learning the meaning of responsibility
- 48:35and ends as a man willing to sacrifice
- 48:37everything to protect the one who will
- 48:39continue his legacy. As we saw, it
- 48:42seems the figure of Spider-Man remains
- 48:44stronger and more popular than ever, so
- 48:46it is time to answer the question we
- 48:48posed at the beginning. Why? Why, after
- 48:51so many decades and among hundreds of
- 48:53superheroes, does Spider-Man remain one
- 48:56of our favorites? In my opinion, and
- 48:59after doing all this research, his
- 49:01timelessness and popularity lie in what
- 49:03made him different in the first place.
- 49:05And that is that Spider-Man never tried
- 49:08to connect through admiration. It was
- 49:10never intended for him to be the
- 49:12strongest or perfect. Spider-Man
- 49:14connected because of his relatability,
- 49:16because he is one of us. He is someone
- 49:18who makes mistakes, who loses people he
- 49:20loves, who doesn't always make the
- 49:22right choice, and who discovers again
- 49:23and again that doing the right thing is
- 49:25rarely the easiest. Stan understood
- 49:28this perfectly, and that is why I think
- 49:30the decision to completely cover
- 49:32Spider-Man's face was so brilliant,
- 49:33because anyone could be under that mask
- 49:35. Regardless of skin color, country, or
- 49:39age, any child could imagine it was
- 49:41them climbing the buildings of New York
- 49:43. In that sense, Spider-Man never told
- 49:47us to wait for a hero to appear to save
- 49:49us, but he did make us think that any
- 49:51one of us could become one. As Stan
- 49:54himself said, the person who helps
- 49:56others simply because it is the right
- 49:59thing to do is, without a doubt, a true
- 50:01superhero. Perhaps that is why the mask
- 50:04and suit never had defined eyes, age,
- 50:06or skin color, because they were never
- 50:08meant to hide Peter Parker. They were
- 50:11meant so that anyone could see
- 50:12themselves behind them, to remember
- 50:14that you don't need an imposing
- 50:16physique or extraordinary powers to
- 50:17choose to do what's right. No.
