Popliteal Artery Scheme (Course, Branches, Patellar Network) | Anatomy — Transcript

- 0:00Hello and welcome to another video, in this video we’re gonna be looking at the Popliteal
- 0:04artery and the patellar network. Now the popliteal artery is a
- 0:08direct continuation of femoral artery. So if we now follow the femoral artery
- 0:13And look from this perspective, behind the knee You’ll see that the artery runs very superficially
- 0:19through the popliteal fossa to the popliteus muscle, where it ends by dividing into
- 0:24Its two terminal branches; these are the anterior and the posterior tibial arteries.
- 0:31Along its course, the popliteal artery gives Off 6 side branches for the patellar network
- 0:37and the superficial muscles for the posterior group of the lower leg.
- 0:41The first two are the Superior medial and the superior lateral genicular arteries,
- 0:47which winds around the medial and lateral condyles of the femur, to supply the knee with blood.
- 0:54And since we have Superior arteries, we’re also gong to have the Inferior medial and the Inferior
- 1:00Lateral genicular arteries, which winds around the Tibia and the Fibula to also supply the knees.
- 1:06And then there’s the Middle genicular artery. It pierces the articular capsule, enters the
- 1:13articular cavity and supplies the ligaments, meniscs and the synovial folds of the knee.
- 1:20The last arteries the popliteal artery gives off, are the Sural arteries, which descends
- 1:25and supply the triceps surae muscle. Now that was all for the side branches of the popliteal
- 1:32artery. Overall, the popliteal artery and its branches provide an arterial supply to
- 1:37the knee joint, the leg and foot. Let’s now Go ahead and cover the patellar network,
- 1:41or the Rete articulare genu in latin. First, The Superior and the Inferior medial and lateral
- 1:48genicular arteries will anestemose like this. Then there’s the descending genicular artery
- 1:54coming from the Femoral artery if you remember this one. It connects
- 1:58directly to the superior medial genicular artery; And gives off a side branch called the saphenous
- 2:03branch which provides a collateral blood flow to the knee. Then remember that the lateral femoral
- 2:25circumflex artery divides into three branches, the ascending, transverse and the descending branch?
- 2:31The descending branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery will go down
- 2:36and contribute to the patellar network on the lateral side. Then from the inferior side,
- 2:42The anterior tibial artery will give off two branches called the anterior recurrent
- 2:48tibial branch from the anterior side, and a posterior recurrent tibial branch,
- 2:55which emerges right before the anterior tibial artery reaches the anterior side. As you see here
- 3:02these two arteries will contribute to the patellar network by anastomosing with the inferior
- 3:08lateral genicular artery. Then lastly The posterior tibial artery give off the
- 3:14circumflex fibular branch to also take part in the patellar network by anastomosing with the
- 3:19inferior lateral genicular artery. So that was all I
- 3:23had for the popliteal artery and the genicular network, and I hope this was helpful.
