  1. 0:00welcome back everybody today we're
  2. 0:02diving deep deep into a story that's
  3. 0:04both fascinating and disturbing the case
  4. 0:07of Jennifer pan yeah case that really
  5. 0:09makes you wonder how someone could go so
  6. 0:10far right I mean on the surface you've
  7. 0:13got this seemingly ordinary young woman
  8. 0:16Jennifer pan growing up in Markham
  9. 0:19Ontario figure skating dreams of a
  10. 0:21career in health care you know the whole
  11. 0:23nine yards but behind this facade behind
  12. 0:26the facade there's this immense pressure
  13. 0:28she's facing from her parents especially
  14. 0:30Dad they had incredibly high
  15. 0:32expectations pushing her relentlessly in
  16. 0:34school and extracurriculars I mean
  17. 0:36that's not uncommon right lots of
  18. 0:38parents want their kids to succeed of
  19. 0:40course of course but with Jennifer's
  20. 0:42family you've got a factor in the
  21. 0:44cultural context they were immigrants
  22. 0:46and for many immigrant families academic
  23. 0:48achievement is like well it's everything
  24. 0:50it's seen as the way to repay those
  25. 0:52sacrifices their parents made for a
  26. 0:53better life so she's carrying the weight
  27. 0:55of her parents dreams on her shoulders
  28. 0:57exactly and that's where the cracks in
  29. 0:59this perfect pictures start to show to
  30. 1:02keep up this illusion of success
  31. 1:04Jennifer starts faking things faking
  32. 1:06things like what we're not talking about
  33. 1:07Little White Lies here this is
  34. 1:09systematic deception years of it faked
  35. 1:13test results forged report cards oh wow
  36. 1:16she even fabricated a high school
  37. 1:18diploma and a university acceptance
  38. 1:20letter that's that's incredible I mean
  39. 1:23the level of deception is just
  40. 1:24mind-blowing right and think about what
  41. 1:26that does to a person living in this
  42. 1:28constant fear of being exposed the
  43. 1:31psychological toll it takes it's
  44. 1:33possible Jennifer was living in this
  45. 1:35distorted reality where her lies became
  46. 1:37more real than the truth it's a chilling
  47. 1:39thought and I'm guessing this wasn't
  48. 1:40just about school was it you're right
  49. 1:42this is where we uncover Jennifer's
  50. 1:44double life while her parents thought
  51. 1:46she was diligently studying pharmacology
  52. 1:48Jennifer had actually dropped out of
  53. 1:50high school wait what dropped out
  54. 1:51dropped out and was living with her drug
  55. 1:53dealer boyfriend no way for how long get
  56. 1:55this almost 8 years 8 years you're
  57. 2:00kidding that's not teenage rebellion
  58. 2:01that's a whole other life right it makes
  59. 2:04you wonder what drove her to such
  60. 2:06extremes was it Rebellion a need to
  61. 2:08break free or was there something deeper
  62. 2:11maybe she was searching for an emotional
  63. 2:13connection she wasn't getting at home it
  64. 2:14could be all of those things we have to
  65. 2:16remember she's still young figuring
  66. 2:18things out so she's living this double
  67. 2:20life and then boom Everything Changes
  68. 2:232010 Jennifer's parents uncover the
  69. 2:26truth and they give her this ultimatum
  70. 2:28it's either their strict rule at home or
  71. 2:31being completely cut off no money no
  72. 2:33contact talk about pressure imagine
  73. 2:35being 24 and facing that what a
  74. 2:37Crossroads what does she do well she
  75. 2:39chose a third option and it's a chilling
  76. 2:41one a calculated plan with devastating
  77. 2:43consequences she decided to Stage a home
  78. 2:45invasion precisely she enlists the help
  79. 2:48of her boyfriend's acquaintances to make
  80. 2:49it look like a random attack wow this
  81. 2:51wasn't just a Spur ofth the- moment
  82. 2:53thing was it this was planned absolutely
  83. 2:55and that shift from avoidance and
  84. 2:57deception to this yeah it's a sign kind
  85. 2:59of desperation a disturbing kind of
  86. 3:01resolve like she felt there was no other
  87. 3:04way out it's incredible so you have this
  88. 3:06young woman a double life and AOSS
  89. 3:08choice and a desperate plan what happens
  90. 3:10next well the night of November 8th 2010
  91. 3:13three individuals enter the pan
  92. 3:15household shots are fired Jennifer calls
  93. 3:18911 seemingly terrified her mother is
  94. 3:21dead and her father miraculously
  95. 3:24survives it sounds like something out of
  96. 3:26a movie but I bet things aren't what
  97. 3:28they seem you got it those early police
  98. 3:30interviews there are already
  99. 3:32inconsistencies popping up her speech is
  100. 3:34clear articulate despite the supposed
  101. 3:36trauma her grief it seems selective
  102. 3:39almost performative it sounds like the
  103. 3:41investigators are getting suspicious
  104. 3:42exactly they're starting to sense that
  105. 3:44something's not right and as they dig
  106. 3:46deeper the cracks in Jennifer's story
  107. 3:48begin to widen revealing a truth much
  108. 3:50darker than anyone could have imagined
  109. 3:52we left off with those early police
  110. 3:53interviews with Jennifer and things
  111. 3:55weren't adding up her grief seemed off
  112. 3:57her story had holes yeah it's in that
  113. 4:00second interview that things really
  114. 4:01start to unravel she's still technically
  115. 4:04a witness but the investigators they're
  116. 4:06shifting gears subtly treating her more
  117. 4:09like a suspect and that pressure must
  118. 4:11have been intense they start picking
  119. 4:13apart her story focusing on those
  120. 4:15details about The Intruders especially
  121. 4:17her being tied up and the detective
  122. 4:19leading the interview he's really smart
  123. 4:21about it he doesn't confront her
  124. 4:23directly but he kind of guides her makes
  125. 4:26her repeat those suspect parts of her
  126. 4:28story elaborate on on them like he's
  127. 4:30setting a trap leading her down a path
  128. 4:32where her lies just get more Tangled
  129. 4:35exactly and it works Jennifer gets
  130. 4:37flustered she starts contradicting
  131. 4:39herself forgetting details she mentioned
  132. 4:41before like in her first account she
  133. 4:43never even mentioned being tied up
  134. 4:44before being taken downstairs the more
  135. 4:46she talks the more her story falls apart
  136. 4:48it's a classic case of the pressure
  137. 4:50getting to her and then comes the
  138. 4:52bombshell that really changes everything
  139. 4:54Jennifer's father Han he wakes up from
  140. 4:57his coma wow that's huge it is hans's
  141. 5:00testimony directly contradicts key parts
  142. 5:02of Jennifer's story he says she wasn't
  143. 5:05tied up at all he even remembers seeing
  144. 5:07her walking around talking to The
  145. 5:09Intruders like she knew them that's
  146. 5:11devastating for her story but didn't Han
  147. 5:14have brain damage from The Gunshot yes
  148. 5:17and that adds another layer to this his
  149. 5:19testimony is incredibly damaging but the
  150. 5:22defense could use his injury to question
  151. 5:24his reliability it becomes his whole
  152. 5:26issue of credibility mixed in with the
  153. 5:28already complicated dynamics of this
  154. 5:30family so you've got a deceased mother a
  155. 5:33father with fragmented memories and a
  156. 5:35daughter whose story is crumbling where
  157. 5:38do the investigators go from here they
  158. 5:40know they need a confession that's when
  159. 5:42detective William Gates steps in a
  160. 5:44seasoned investigator known for getting
  161. 5:46people to talk I've heard about Gates
  162. 5:48his interrogation of Jennifer it's like
  163. 5:50watching a master class in Psychology
  164. 5:52absolutely he's very deliberate starts
  165. 5:54by pacing the conversation building
  166. 5:56rapport with Jennifer even expressing
  167. 5:58sympathy for her tough relation ship
  168. 6:00with her parents he's playing the long
  169. 6:01game gaining her trust before turning up
  170. 6:03the heat exactly classic interrogation
  171. 6:07technique disarm the suspect make them
  172. 6:09feel comfortable before hitting them
  173. 6:11with the truth Gates also uses This
  174. 6:14brilliant tactic What's called the how
  175. 6:16and why technique he subtly suggests
  176. 6:18that you know her actions were wrong but
  177. 6:21understandable given the pressure from
  178. 6:22her parents he's giving her a way to
  179. 6:24rationalize what she did right and as
  180. 6:26the interrogation goes on you see
  181. 6:27Jennifer change the fake grief
  182. 6:30disappears and she starts having these
  183. 6:32genuine emotional outbursts the pressure
  184. 6:35is getting to her there's this one point
  185. 6:37where she keeps asking what's going to
  186. 6:39happen it's heartbreaking the weight of
  187. 6:40her choice is crashing down on her
  188. 6:42exactly the interrogation room becomes
  189. 6:44this pressure cooker Gates uses
  190. 6:46techniques minimizing the crime
  191. 6:48emphasizing Jennifer's goodness to break
  192. 6:51down her resistance and after hours of
  193. 6:53this psychological battle she confesses
  194. 6:55well there's a catch always a catch what
  195. 6:57is it Jennifer admits to planning the
  196. 6:59home invasion but she says she was the
  197. 7:00target not her parents trying to shift
  198. 7:03the blame a last attempt to seem
  199. 7:06innocent it doesn't work does it no
  200. 7:09remember those burner phones they use
  201. 7:10yeah they thought they were so smart
  202. 7:12covering their tracks well the
  203. 7:13investigators find them and they uncover
  204. 7:15116 text messages between Jennifer and
  205. 7:18her boyfriend laying out the entire
  206. 7:20murder plot game over pretty much those
  207. 7:24text messages are The Smoking Gun they
  208. 7:27prove Jennifer's involvement Beyond a
  209. 7:29doubt
  210. 7:30welcome back to our Deep dive into the
  211. 7:32Jennifer pan case we've gone through so
  212. 7:35much the pressure she faced the lies
  213. 7:38that confession now it's time to talk
  214. 7:40about the trial itself yeah the trial
  215. 7:43was really the culmination of everything
  216. 7:45both sides laying out their arguments
  217. 7:47trying to make sense of this tragedy it
  218. 7:49was all over the news everyone was
  219. 7:50following it those text messages must
  220. 7:52have been a huge part of it right oh
  221. 7:54absolutely those 116 messages between
  222. 7:57Jennifer and her boyfriend they were the
  223. 7:59prosecution's strongest evidence
  224. 8:01remember how she tried to paint herself
  225. 8:03as the victim yeah like she was
  226. 8:04manipulated by her parents right but
  227. 8:06those texts they blew that whole
  228. 8:07narrative apart they showed a completely
  229. 8:09different side of Jennifer someone cold
  230. 8:11and calculating so chilling to hear
  231. 8:13those words read out in court what did
  232. 8:16the defense even say to that well they
  233. 8:18had a tough job they argued that
  234. 8:19Jennifer was basically a product of her
  235. 8:22parents expectations that she was almost
  236. 8:24brainwashed into doing this they were
  237. 8:26saying she was driven to this by the
  238. 8:27pressure to succeed exactly they talked
  239. 8:30about the pressure she faced the
  240. 8:32cultural emphasis on achievement how she
  241. 8:34lived under such strict control for
  242. 8:36years trying to show that her actions as
  243. 8:39horrible as they were were a way to
  244. 8:41break free but there was also evidence
  245. 8:43about Jennifer being manipulative
  246. 8:45herself right and the prosecution used
  247. 8:47that too they brought up all her lies
  248. 8:50how she deceived her parents for years
  249. 8:52how calculated the home invasion was
  250. 8:54they argued she wasn't a victim but a
  251. 8:56master manipulator so it was a battle of
  252. 8:58two completely different versions of
  253. 9:00Jennifer what did the jury think in the
  254. 9:03end they sided with the prosecution
  255. 9:05those text messages were just too much
  256. 9:07to ignore Jennifer her boyfriend and the
  257. 9:10hired attackers they were all found
  258. 9:12guilty guilty of first-degree murder
  259. 9:14life in prison no parole for 25 years
  260. 9:17that's a heavy sentence it really shows
  261. 9:20how serious this crime was how much it
  262. 9:22impacted everyone definitely this case
  263. 9:25reminds us how destructive ambition and
  264. 9:27deceit can be how complex family
  265. 9:29relationships can get and it makes you
  266. 9:31think could this have been prevented
  267. 9:33what if her parents had been different
  268. 9:35yeah what if they had noticed her
  269. 9:36struggles supported her in a different
  270. 9:38way would you have felt so trapped would
  271. 9:40any of this have happened it's a
  272. 9:42question that stays with you this case
  273. 9:44makes us all examine our own lives how
  274. 9:46we define success how we treat the young
  275. 9:48people around us it's a story about
  276. 9:50ambition family the Dark Side of human
  277. 9:53nature it's captivated people horrified
  278. 9:56them and left us all with more questions
  279. 9:58than answers it reminds that even in the
  280. 10:00darkest situations there's always more
  281. 10:01to learn more to understand Jennifer's
  282. 10:04story will stick with us making us think
  283. 10:05about our choices the pressures we face
  284. 10:08and how important it is to be
  285. 10:09understanding and empathetic in our
  286. 10:11relationships and that brings us to the
  287. 10:13end of our Deep dive into the Jennifer
  288. 10:14panc case we hope you found it
  289. 10:16insightful thought-provoking maybe even
  290. 10:18a little bit unsettling thanks for
  291. 10:20joining us as we explored this complex
  292. 10:22and tragic True Crime Story it's a
  293. 10:24chilling reminder of how fragile life is
  294. 10:27and the devastating consequences of
  295. 10:29unchecked ambition and deceit
