- 3:05all of the support from everyone so
- 3:08thank you so much okay let's start this
- 3:12podcast with a personal story about
- 3:17motivation so when I was in Canada I had
- 3:21to study English from grade 4 to grade
- 3:2612 so I spent 8 years studying French in
- 3:32school but in grade 12 when I took my
- 3:37last French course in school I only got
- 3:42a 50 in the west a 50 means 50% so it's
- 3:48like I got five points if I got 1% less
- 3:54then I would have failed so I just
- 3:57barely passed that course and that was
- 4:01because I didn't really have any
- 4:05motivation to learn
- 4:07French because I didn't have any
- 4:10motivation I just did the bare minimum
- 4:15to pass the class and I'm lucky that I
- 4:18even did that so many of you can
- 4:22probably relate to this for English
- 4:25maybe when you were studying English in
- 4:28school you didn't have much motivation
- 4:32so you didn't do too much and maybe your
- 4:35grades weren't that high but for
- 4:38learning Vietnamese I only spent a few
- 4:42years studying way less than eight years
- 4:45and I was already able to achieve a much
- 4:50higher level than my level in French and
- 4:54that's what makes having the motivation
- 4:58so important the good thing about
- 5:01motivation is it will help you in the
- 5:04beginning stages to get to the
- 5:07intermediate stages but after you get to
- 5:12the higher levels of English where you
- 5:16can read books understand TV shows and
- 5:20you can enjoy English more then you
- 5:24don't need as much
- 5:27motivation because now it's fun and now
- 5:31you can just watch a TV show or watch a
- 5:34movie watch a YouTube video read a book
- 5:38and then your English will just get
- 5:40better and better and better without you
- 5:44even trying but in the beginning when
- 5:47studying isn't fun and you don't
- 5:50understand anything then motivation is
- 5:53extremely important to get to the next
- 5:58level where you can start enjoying
- 6:01English because it's in the beginning
- 6:04stages where most people give up they
- 6:07try to learn English it's just too hard
- 6:11it feels impossible and so they give up
- 6:15and so having motivation in this stage
- 6:18is really important okay so with that
- 6:21being said let's get to the first way to
- 6:24improve your motivation and way number
- 6:28one is to create create a heaven and
- 6:31hell scenario now I know saying heaven
- 6:35and hell is a bit extreme but I'm using
- 6:40those words because they are extreme and
- 6:43I want to help you remember this
- 6:46technique so first let's Create Your
- 6:49Heaven your Heaven is 3 years from now
- 6:55and you have been studying English and
- 6:59now you know English imagine you could
- 7:03you know make friends in English when
- 7:05you travel you're able to talk to the
- 7:09people around you in English um if you
- 7:13go with a group maybe some of your other
- 7:16friends don't know English so you can
- 7:19speak English on their behalf also if
- 7:23there's an English TV show you can watch
- 7:26that so that is your Heaven okay three
- 7:29years from now after studying English
- 7:33that's your heaven now imagine your hell
- 7:38so your hell is also 3 years from now
- 7:42and again please don't get offended it's
- 7:45just an extreme word to create the
- 7:49contrast but your hell is 3 years from
- 7:52now you haven't been learning any
- 7:56English um in 3 years your level is
- 7:59still the same or maybe worse than it is
- 8:03now and you can't do the things I just
- 8:07mentioned when you travel you feel
- 8:11insecure and not confident in your
- 8:14English you can't understand the TV
- 8:17shows and you can't really communicate
- 8:22with foreigners whether it's for fun or
- 8:25for work okay so that's your hell and
- 8:28maybe you're totally okay with that hell
- 8:32and if so that's fine I'm not saying oh
- 8:35if you don't know English that's like
- 8:38hell no I'm just trying to help you
- 8:42imagine the two scenarios where if you
- 8:46did learn English and if you didn't
- 8:48learn English when you imagine this
- 8:51heaven and this hell it can be really
- 8:55useful because you're being pushed and
- 8:58pulled at the same time what I mean by
- 9:02this is your heaven looks really
- 9:05attractive so you're being pulled into
- 9:09your Heaven hello
- 9:11there uh your hell is unattractive so
- 9:16you're being pushed away from your hell
- 9:19so it's like you see your hell you're
- 9:21like oh I don't want to go there you see
- 9:24your heaven and you say oh that looks
- 9:27great I'm GNA go there
- 9:30so when you imagine that that could give
- 9:33you some motivation to say you know what
- 9:37I'm going to learn English because in 3
- 9:40years I want to be in my heaven when I
- 9:45was learning Vietnamese I used this
- 9:49trick uh because I had a feeling I would
- 9:52stay in Vietnam for many more years so I
- 9:57imagined 3 years from the beginning of
- 10:01covid which is when I started learning
- 10:04Vietnamese three years from then I was
- 10:07thinking if I still don't know
- 10:09Vietnamese and I still have this
- 10:12disconnection with the people that was
- 10:15my hell and then my heaven was being
- 10:19able to socialize to talk to people
- 10:24to enjoy my life so much more in Vietnam
- 10:29and my hell was not knowing Vietnamese
- 10:33feeling embarrassed for being here for
- 10:36so long and still not knowing Vietnamese
- 10:39not being able to understand anyone or
- 10:43talk to anyone for me my heal was very
- 10:48powerful to get me to start learning and
- 10:52now that I'm at the point
- 10:55where my Vietnamese is good enough to to
- 10:59communicate with people and understand a
- 11:02lot of what they're saying I feel really
- 11:06happy that I made that decision so now
- 11:10you might be wondering well Carter of
- 11:13course I want to get to my heaven but
- 11:17how can I do that so that brings us to
- 11:21way number two which is to set a routine
- 11:25a routine is simply something you do
- 11:29regularly like every day to set a
- 11:33routine all you need to do is choose a
- 11:37time and an amount of time to learn
- 11:41English so for example let's say you
- 11:45work during the day and you're free at
- 11:48around 8:30 at night after dinner so you
- 11:53choose that time at 8:30 I'm going to
- 11:57learn English
- 11:59now let's choose for how
- 12:02long this depends on you this depends
- 12:06how much time you have and how much
- 12:08mental energy you have because working
- 12:12makes you tired School makes you tired
- 12:15we only have so much energy so what I
- 12:19recommend is you start with something
- 12:22small like 15 minutes maybe 20 minutes
- 12:26so again you choose this time which is
- 12:298:30 in the
- 12:31evening I'm going to study for 15
- 12:34minutes from 8:30 to
- 12:388:45 and the reason why setting this
- 12:42routine can give you motivation is
- 12:46because you can know that as long as you
- 12:50follow that routine you are pretty much
- 12:54guaranteed to improve and knowing that
- 12:57you're guaranteed to improve
- 13:00will make you feel more excited about
- 13:04learning and again it doesn't have to be
- 13:07for too long 15 or 20 minutes and then
- 13:11once that time is up you can stop and do
- 13:15whatever else you want to do you may
- 13:18think that oh 15 20 minutes it's not
- 13:22really enough time but what I found is
- 13:25that if you actually sit down and focus
- 13:30on just learning English like just
- 13:33listening to a YouTube video like this
- 13:36podcast for 15 or 20 minutes it's
- 13:40actually not that short if you're
- 13:43actually
- 13:45focusing because I think most people
- 13:49overestimate how much time they actually
- 13:52spend learning maybe they'll watch one
- 13:56video for a minute switch to another one
- 14:00watch a bit and then get distracted go
- 14:03on their phone and then it's been 30
- 14:05minutes and then they think oh I just
- 14:08studied for 30 minutes but in reality
- 14:12you studied for maybe like 5 minutes 10
- 14:15minutes and did other things in the rest
- 14:18of the time so if you actually Focus do
- 14:23nothing else but learn English for 15 or
- 14:2720 minutes then
- 14:29that amount of time will give you a lot
- 14:33of benefit if you do it regularly and
- 14:36also if you study for a short amount of
- 14:40time then chances are you won't get
- 14:44burnt out too fast because if you set
- 14:47your time really high like you know what
- 14:51I really want to learn English I'm going
- 14:53to study for 2 hours every day some
- 14:57people can do this
- 14:59and they're successful but not everyone
- 15:02can do this probably most people can't
- 15:05and if you're studying for 2 hours a day
- 15:09there's a good chance you will feel
- 15:11burnt out and tired and then you will
- 15:14stop studying so in my opinion it's
- 15:17better to set a smaller goal like 15 20
- 15:22minutes maybe half an hour but do that
- 15:26every day and stick with it
- 15:29to me that's better than setting a big
- 15:32goal getting exhausted and then quitting
- 15:35it makes it so you're less likely to
- 15:38stop your routine you're less likely to
- 15:41get very tired and exhausted so just try
- 15:45it out you could do it right now choose
- 15:48a time and choose an amount of time that
- 15:51you will focus on learning English each
- 15:55day and now you might be thinking okay
- 15:59well what do I do for those 15 or 20
- 16:04minutes and that leads us to tip number
- 16:07three which is to make your learning
- 16:11simple and convenient what I mean by
- 16:15that is when it's time to learn you
- 16:18won't have to think about what you're
- 16:21learning you just click a button or you
- 16:24press something on your phone and you're
- 16:28learning
- 16:29there's no time thinking oh should I do
- 16:32this or should I do that or what should
- 16:35I do it's like Netflix right when you
- 16:38open Netflix and you spend an hour
- 16:41looking for a movie and then after that
- 16:45time is done it's too late to watch a
- 16:47movie so you just close Netflix right
- 16:50this is why it's super important to make
- 16:53it convenient and simple so how do you
- 16:58do that first you can make your learning
- 17:01content easy to access if you're on the
- 17:05computer and you use a browser like
- 17:09Safari or Chrome or cop cup whatever one
- 17:13you
- 17:14use they have a bookmarks bar okay so in
- 17:19your bookmarks bar create a folder that
- 17:23says learn English and now in that
- 17:27folder you can book book Mark things
- 17:30like YouTube channels or websites where
- 17:33you can read books whatever English
- 17:37content that you enjoy or want to learn
- 17:41so when it's time to study you don't
- 17:44have to think about what to do you click
- 17:48that folder and then you just click
- 17:50anything in that folder for example if
- 17:54you want to practice listening then
- 17:56click one of the YouTube channels if if
- 17:58you want to practice reading then click
- 18:01one of the book websites so that way it
- 18:05literally takes two clicks to start
- 18:08learning and you don't have to spend
- 18:11time thinking about what to do in the
- 18:14description below I'm going to put links
- 18:18to five YouTube channels and I can't say
- 18:22exactly how many but I'll find some book
- 18:26websites where you can read book for
- 18:29free those will be in the description so
- 18:32you can simply go there and then add
- 18:35them to your book marks right after you
- 18:38finish this video now if you only use a
- 18:41phone to study you could do the same
- 18:44thing but put these links in like a note
- 18:48file and then put that note file on the
- 18:52homage of your phone so if you are on
- 18:56your phone you want to learn English you
- 18:59simply open it open the Note file and
- 19:02choose one of those links and you can
- 19:06begin learning right away and this will
- 19:09give you motivation because you know you
- 19:13don't have to do any thinking it's
- 19:16really easy to access and when 8:30 or
- 19:19whatever your time is comes you just
- 19:22open that folder click that link and
- 19:26you're learning English Okay so to
- 19:28quickly recap first create your heaven
- 19:32and your hell for learning English then
- 19:35set a routine of when you will study and
- 19:39for how long and then make a folder that
- 19:43you can click and start learning in 3
- 19:47seconds so guys if you want to learn
- 19:50five more specific ways on how to learn
- 19:54English then click the link here L here
- 19:58and thank you so much for watching I
- 20:01hope you have a fantastic day and I will
- 20:04see you in the next video goodbye
