- 4:33At 4 in the morning, he couldn't hold a
- 4:34juice box straight. In here, he's just
- 4:37family.
- 4:39>> Professor
- 4:40>> Canoli for the nurses. Nobody ever
- 4:43brings him anything.
- 4:48>> Poor kid. I got here before they took

- 4:52myself.
- 5:00>> Who brought you in? drove myself.
- 5:12>> Arthur Kaine, I kept the books for
- 5:15Luca's father and now I keep them for

- 5:19You're the nurse who got into his car.
- 5:22>> Wrong car. Long night.
- 5:26>> Careful whose car you get into, dear.
- 5:36You said coffee isn't food.
- 5:39I've been standing here 20 minutes
- 5:41trying to work out how people say this.
- 5:43>> Say what?
- 5:45>> Breakfast with me. Usually I just tell
- 5:48people where to be.
- 5:54>> Bus stops right there. I've had enough
- 5:55of your car for one week. Ski.
- 5:58My dad collapsed on a train platform
- 6:00downtown. Heart attack. There's video.
- 6:0432 people walked around him. I counted.
- 6:08Bypass surgery.
- 6:10My mom and I have been paying it off for
- 6:126 years. So, no. I wasn't getting out of
- 6:16your car. I don't walk past.
- 6:21>> How'd you know that night that I hadn't
- 6:24eaten?
- 6:25>> Your hands. Faces lie. Hands don't.
- 6:30My dad said that.
- 6:3230 years fixing buses for the city.
- 6:36He could tell you who was hung over, who
- 6:39was scared, who was about to quit just
- 6:43by looking at their hands.
- 6:56You paid off my loan.
- 7:00>> It was nothing.
- 7:02>> That was my dad's heart.
- 7:04That was six years of my mother working
- 7:06nights. You don't get to make that
- 7:09nothing.
- 7:12I already called them. Every dime's
- 7:15going back to you. Next time you ask, I
- 7:18might even say yes.
- 7:22May I walk you to your bus?
- 7:29>> Who sends that kind of money back?
- 7:33>> May I send dinner to your floor?
- 7:38>> You could just send it, boss.
- 7:41>> She said ask.
- 7:45>> You may.
- 7:55for your car.
- 7:57May I call you on your break?
- 8:02>> You've got 4 minutes.
- 8:04>> Then I'll talk fast.
- 8:26101.
- 8:28Three nights out here in the cold and
- 8:30now you're running a fever.
- 8:32Whoever's paying you isn't paying you
- 8:34enough.
- 8:37Chicken soup. Bring the thermos back
- 8:39when you're done.
- 8:41And tell your boss if he wants to keep
- 8:44an eye on me. He can ask.
- 8:56>> Okay, Marchetti, you and me are going to
- 8:57talk about your little friend across the
- 9:09front, please.
- 9:14I didn't know where else to go.
- 9:16>> Whose seat is this? Luca.
- 9:20>> My daughter's
- 9:23>> it was her sixth birthday.
- 9:27She'd been begging to ride up front for
- 9:28a year and I always said no. That night
- 9:31she says, "Birthday girl gets the front
- 9:33seat, Daddy. Four blocks." I said,
- 9:37"Yes."
- 9:38Red light on Ashland.
- 9:41A car pulls up next to us. The Costas.
- 9:47She got hit in the shoulder. She lived.
- 9:53I had every window replaced, kept the
- 9:56sticker.
- 9:58Next morning, I signed her away.
- 10:01Her mother took her home to Evston. New
- 10:04last name.
- 10:08Arthur said a man with a kid is a man on
- 10:10a leash. He wasn't wrong.
- 10:15She turned 12 today.
- 10:18I drove up to Ridge View Middle School
- 10:19by myself.
- 10:22Every birthday
- 10:24I park across from wherever she is.
- 10:276 years and I've never once gotten out
- 10:30of the car.
- 10:34That's why my hands were shaking that
- 10:36night. Tommy got hit at a red light.
- 10:48>> What's her name?
- 10:51>> Sophia.
- 10:53>> Tell me about her.
- 10:55>> She kicks with her left,
- 10:58ties her laces twice around before she
- 11:00knots them.
- 11:03Laughs with her whole body. I could see
- 11:05that from across the street.
- 11:12That's how you tie yours.
- 11:18>> Next birthday, you get out of the car.
- 11:21>> I don't know how.
- 11:23>> Then I'll sit right here while you
- 11:25figure it out.
- 11:29Luca, the man with the canal, he lied in
- 11:33that room.
- 11:36Arthur,
- 11:39>> I can't tell you about my patient's
- 11:40night. That's Tommy's to tell.
- 11:43But I can tell you what I saw with my
- 11:45own eyes.
- 11:47You got the text. He was out of surgery.
- 11:50We pulled out and Arthur's car pulled
- 11:53in.
- 11:554:40.
- 11:57You were watching the road. I was
- 11:59watching the window.
- 12:02He said he signed the forms before they
- 12:04took Tommy up. When Tommy wakes up, ask
- 12:08him who did.
- 12:14>> Arthur's the only one of my people who
- 12:16knows where Sophia is. 6 years and she's
- 12:19been safe.
- 12:20>> Then checking won't cost you anything.
- 12:27>> Gus will take you home.
- 12:37Nice school. Everton's a long drive.
- 12:40Gus, two cars up to Ridge View now.
- 12:48It's me.
- 12:50I know. 6 years. Listen to me. Don't let
- 12:54her walk home this week. My people are
- 12:56outside the school. I'll explain.
- 13:07Somebody told the Costa's son 6 years
- 13:10and nobody knew. Did you tell the nurse
- 13:13about Sophia the school?
- 13:17>> Yes.
- 13:20>> You paid off her loan and she sent it
- 13:22back. I keep the books. I saw both.
- 13:26Smart girl.
- 13:28Then on Tuesday, the cost has paid it
- 13:30off. One of their companies have Gus
- 13:33check.
- 13:38>> It's real. Boss
- 13:43>> Costa's people made the payment. They
- 13:46did. I drove your cash over myself.
- 13:50>> You said nobody was going to go near the
- 13:52kid.
- 13:53>> And nobody will. Not once Luca stops
- 13:56being sentimental.
- 14:00Sunday dinner, you tell the table you
- 14:02saw the nurse with Costa's people.
- 14:06By Christmas, the families will want a
- 14:08man without a leash at the head of that
- 14:10table.
- 14:21>> You did it again. I told you to ask me.
- 14:24I didn't pay it. The Costas did. And
- 14:28they sent me this. Sophia's school.
- 14:35>> You're the only person I ever told about
- 14:37that school, Nina.
- 14:44>> You think I gave away where your
- 14:45daughter goes to school for a loan?
- 14:49I sent your money back, Luca. Why would
- 14:51I keep theirs?
- 14:55You get to be scared for her. You don't
- 14:57get to be scared of me.
- 15:02>> The second payment, I want it sent back.
- 15:05I don't care who it came from. It's not
- 15:06mine.
- 15:12>> If Luca didn't pay it, then who sent
- 15:16that guy outside my window?
- 15:22Tommy's awake. He's asking for you.
- 15:27>> Night before I got shot.
- 15:29I'm outside the princer's office. He's
- 15:32on with Joe Costa. Gives him a school up
- 15:36in Edmonton. I figured it was business.
- 15:41Then he sees me in the doorway. Says,
- 15:44"The kid heard me. Handle it."
- 15:49Next night they get me at the light.
- 15:54>> Who signed your forms?
- 15:57>> Me. A nurse held the killed bird. Nobody
- 15:59else was there.
- 16:05>> Arthur gave the costas that school
- 16:07before Nah ever got in your car.
- 16:12>> And he paid off that loan to hang it on
- 16:14her.
- 16:15>> He couldn't get past our guys at this
- 16:17door.
- 16:19So, he needed somebody to blame before
- 16:21Tommy wake up.
- 16:24>> I'm telling the cops, boss. They shot
- 16:26me.
- 16:31>> Then tell them everything and tell them
- 16:34where he'll be Sunday at 1:00.
- 16:38>> You want me to go get him?
- 16:40>> No.
- 16:42The families listen to Arthur. They hear
- 16:44it Sunday at the table in front of
- 16:47everybody.
- 16:49Ask the hospital for a secure room and
- 16:51an alias for Tommy.
- 16:53>> Hillary
- 16:54personally shipped.
- 16:58>> I was wrong. Sunday at my family's
- 17:01table, I stop hiding. You don't have to
- 17:03come. I'm asking.
- 17:07Gus is downstairs. If you don't want him
- 17:09there, wave him off.
- 17:22What's this?
- 17:25>> Let him up, Gus. He's bringing back my
- 17:27thermist.
- 17:32Name's Benny.
- 17:34Don't go tomorrow.
- 17:38>> Keep it. You're still coughing. And tell
- 17:41Mr. Marcheni I'm going.
- 17:44Mr. Martini is not my boss. Never was.
- 17:53>> Hey, that's Kane's driver.
- 18:00>> I thought Lucas sent him.
- 18:02>> Boss doesn't sends kids. He sends me.
- 18:12>> For six years,
- 18:14our boss has been hiding a daughter. You
- 18:17all know what I've always said.
- 18:21A man with a child is a man on a leash.
- 18:30>> I have one. Her name is Sophia.
- 18:34And somebody handed that child's school
- 18:36to the Kostas.
- 18:38Luca told that nurse where his daughter
- 18:40goes to school. The Costas paid off her
- 18:43loan on Tuesday. She's the traitor and I
- 18:46have a witness.
- 18:53Before anybody says a word, Thursday, I
- 18:57asked her the same thing and I was
- 18:59wrong.
- 19:01Everybody in this city reads my face.
- 19:04She's the only one who ever read my
- 19:05hands.
- 19:14Whatever happens at this table, I'm
- 19:17standing right here over the professor.
- 19:20Yes.
- 19:22>> Sit down, Luca. Let me
- 19:33paid in full twice. Once by him, once by
- 19:37somebody who wanted everybody at this
- 19:38table to see it. I sent them both back.
- 19:42Benny,
- 19:44you stood outside my window three nights
- 19:46running. You've still got my thermist.
- 19:49Tell them what you saw.
- 20:00Mr. Kane told me nobody would go near
- 20:02that little girl. He had me drive him up
- 20:05to Evon to look at her school.
- 20:08I drove the money for the nurs's loan to
- 20:10Costa's guy myself.
- 20:13And he told me to stand up here and say
- 20:15I saw this lady with Costa's people.
- 20:19I never did.
- 20:24What I saw was her carrying soup across
- 20:26the street to the guy who was spying on
- 20:28her.
- 20:32I'll drive you anywhere, Mr. Kane.
- 20:34I won't help you hurt a kid. And I won't
- 20:38lie about her.
- 20:42The boy's been sick all week. He doesn't
- 20:45know what he's saying.
- 20:48>> You told me you signed Tommy's forms,
- 20:50Arthur.
- 20:52He signed them himself.
- 20:56You pulled in at 4:40 to find out if he
- 20:58could still talk. He can.
- 21:06The night before they shot him, he heard
- 21:08you give Joe Costra that school
- 21:11a whole day before she ever sat in my
- 21:14car.
- 21:17The kid heard me handle it.
- 21:21So they shot Tommy at a red light,
- 21:25same as my daughter.
- 21:37Oldest rule there is, you don't touch
- 21:40the kids. Every family at this table
- 21:42looks after that little girl. Now Joe
- 21:45Costa hears it from me tonight.
- 21:47>> Cops.
- 21:52I'm not doing to you what you do to me.
- 21:54That's what changed.
- 22:14I put you in Sophia's seat
- 22:17and then I looked at you like you were a
- 22:19Costa
- 22:23and I was mad at you all week over a guy
- 22:25you never even sent.
- 22:28We're both bad at this.
- 22:32I'm not something you park somewhere
- 22:34safe, Luca.
- 22:36I've got a job, a mother, and a loan
- 22:39with my name on it. I'm keeping all
- 22:42three.
- 22:44>> Then I'll keep asking. You'll get sick
- 22:46of it.
- 22:48>> Then ask her.
- 22:52>> Sophia, you've been walking past her for
- 22:546 years.
- 23:00Sophie,
- 23:05her mother just called back. Sophia has
- 23:07been asking about the black car across
- 23:08the street every birthday since she was
- 23:10eight.
- 23:15Will you come with me?
- 23:17>> Front seat.
- 23:25It's not even her birthday.
- 23:28>> Good. You've sat through enough of
- 23:30those.
- 23:32>> I said I'd sit right here. I'm sitting
- 23:34right here. Faces lie. Hands don't. You
- 23:38want this?
- 23:50You're the black car.
- 23:54>> I'm the black car.
- 24:04>> Please just drive me home. I've been on
- 24:06my feet for 20 hours.
- 24:09Sophia says you're coming to her game
- 24:11Saturday. That's not a question. She's
- 24:13like you.
- 24:18>> You know you could sit in the back now.
- 24:21>> I get car sick.
- 24:23>> I know.
- 24:29>> That seat was hers. I'd like it to be
- 24:32yours, too.
- 24:35At least till she's old enough to fight
- 24:36you for it.
- 24:40I'm asking
- 24:52hours drive.
- 24:59>> 28 29 30 Shock him.
- 25:03>> We've got a rhythm.
- 25:07Thank you.
- 25:15>> Somebody else take bed for
- 25:18>> you just brought him back.
- 25:19>> Somebody else.
- 25:24>> Have we met?
- 25:27>> Reassign me, please.
- 25:31>> Three nurses called out sick. He's yours
- 25:33till 7.
- 25:35How's the star?
- 25:36>> Kowaskki's never turned down a patient.
- 25:43>> I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 25:45>> Don't touch me.
- 25:476 years ago, a man collapsed on the Lake
- 25:49Street platform. He lay there 4 minutes.
- 25:5332 people walked around him. I've
- 25:56watched that video so many times. I know
- 25:58every face. You were number 17,
- 26:02brown coat.
- 26:06He was my father.
- 26:08>> Kowalsski, my office now.
- 26:17>> Repounded crime blah Luca Marchelli and
- 26:19her fianceé, an emergency nurse at Lake
- 26:21View General. That's you.
- 26:24>> I've read it.
- 26:28>> A nurse who picks her patients. And the
- 26:30papers say she picks mob bosses, too.
- 26:38Tonight you brought a man back and in
- 26:40the same breath you asked to be taken
- 26:42off him. Then you stood at his bed and
- 26:44told him he was number 17.
- 26:47>> I said it. Every word was true.
- 26:50>> That's the problem.
- 26:55One complaint from Mr. Prudy and it runs
- 26:58right next to this.
- 27:00The board picks a new chief medical
- 27:02officer next month.
- 27:06My name's on the list. I'm not having
- 27:08the mob nurse in the news that week.
- 27:14I've already called the nursing
- 27:15supervisor.
- 27:18You're off patient care until a review
- 27:20on Friday. You finish this shift on the
- 27:23desk.
- 27:25Your next shift, you're on the nurse
- 27:27advice line. the phones.
- 27:32>> You wanted somebody else on bed four.
- 27:33You got it.
- 27:42After the cath, he goes up to CCU. You
- 27:45stay off that floor and you don't go
- 27:47near Mr. Prudit.
- 27:58your hands.
- 28:00>> One of the 32. He coded on me last
- 28:03night. I brought him back.
- 28:07>> Give me his name.
- 28:09>> He's my patient. That's all he gets to
- 28:11be.
- 28:13>> Was

- 28:22May I talk to this ward?
- 28:25>> No.
- 28:26>> May I get you a lawyer?
- 28:30>> Kowalsskis pay their own way.
- 28:33>> I know. I had to ask.
- 28:3820 says she's in that man's room before
- 28:40Friday. She's not allowed in that room.
- 28:43That's why it's 20.
- 28:49Pier, you eat, then you sleep. Three
- 28:52months to the wedding and you look like
- 28:53a ghost.
- 28:55>> Mom, you just worked all night.
- 28:57>> So did you. Sit.
- 29:00One of them came in last night. 17.
- 29:03Brown coat.
- 29:10Did you take care of him?
- 29:12>> I brought him back. Then I asked for
- 29:14somebody else.
- 29:21Your father would have wanted to see his
- 29:23face. Dad got two more years. Every
- 29:27minute nobody helped him cost him heart
- 29:29muscle.
- 29:3432 people walked away from him. I don't
- 29:37need to see one of them again.
- 29:48You have rever
