- 0:02hi chris i think the family are ready
- 0:04for the next
- 0:04conversation okay and they were there at
- 0:07the testing weren't they
- 0:09do you think that helped them yeah i do
- 0:10yeah i think they um
- 0:12they got a lot from that i think they're
- 0:14ready for a poor outcome
- 0:16so we need to go and speak to them about
- 0:17the the diagnosis of death now don't we
- 0:19um thinking ahead uh the things we'll
- 0:22have to talk about
- 0:24do you know if he's on the odr so i've
- 0:26checked the organ register and philip
- 0:28hasn't expressed a decision on there
- 0:30so potentially he could meet the
- 0:31criteria for deemed consent
- 0:34right okay um forgive me i've not done
- 0:36an approach with team's consent okay
- 0:38yeah
- 0:39how's it different so in order to meet
- 0:41the criteria the patient needs to be
- 0:42over the age of 18.
- 0:44we need to know that he's voluntarily
- 0:45resided in england for at least 12
- 0:47months prior to his death
- 0:49and we know that because we've got his
- 0:50gp summaries
- 0:53have we got any reasons to have like any
- 0:55concerns over his mental capacity prior
- 0:57to his icu admission
- 0:59no he was working as a teacher okay yeah
- 1:01i know nothing's been brought up in his
- 1:03medical history to suggest his
- 1:04capacity so it doesn't seem that way
- 1:07so the other thing i need to do is
- 1:09explore with the family if he's
- 1:10expressed
- 1:11a decision verbally about donation
- 1:12because that would count as much as
- 1:14signing the register okay
- 1:18well i suppose we need to go in and
- 1:20speak to them then
- 1:21um have they been louise well wife
- 1:24sandra and brother mike have been at the
- 1:26bedside
- 1:27um all along and as you know you know
- 1:28they were at the test so
- 1:30i think they're devastated but ready
- 1:32really for the next part of the
- 1:34conversation
- 1:35okay okay um okay well if we go in then
- 1:38and if i start off by talking about
- 1:41the testing and the confirmation of
- 1:43death that's occurred
- 1:45and then maybe if i hand over to you to
- 1:46do all the end of life
- 1:48yeah that'd be great thank you
- 1:51throughout the conversation i might use
- 1:52some silences or pauses just to give the
- 1:54time
- 1:55family a bit you know time to comprehend
- 1:58what we're telling them and what we're
- 1:59offering them
- 2:00yeah and we've done keepsakes and uh
- 2:02handprints lots of hair and
- 2:04we've called the vicar okay um well i
- 2:08suggest in that case if
- 2:09if if they're ready are they ready yep
- 2:11they're ready let's go and speak to them
