  398. 25:13You get what I'm saying? You put four
  399. 25:15people in the same room for 5 years and
  400. 25:17there's going to be tension eventually.
  401. 25:19You know what I mean? We were young. We
  402. 25:20started when we were in our 20s and
  403. 25:22stuff like that.
  404. 25:24And I think we became like anyone in
  405. 25:27close knit quarters like dysfunctional,
  406. 25:28like any dysfunctional family.
  407. 25:30Definitely revolved around Kim and
  408. 25:32Charles.
  409. 25:34I think uh
  410. 25:36And I can't speak for Charles, but I'm
  411. 25:38sure he must have felt a little
  412. 25:40weird when
  413. 25:41you know
  414. 25:43Kim
  415. 25:45all of a sudden turned to this like
  416. 25:47darling
  417. 25:49big darling. Might have crimped his ego.
  418. 25:52You know.
  419. 25:53Once someone has like started to annoy
  420. 25:54you, then you're all you're you can
  421. 25:57you can smell them coming around the
  422. 25:58corner, you know what I mean? Here they
  423. 26:00come. What Oh God, there they go.
  424. 26:04You know what I mean? AND IT'S JUST THEN
  425. 26:06IT JUST becomes silly, you know.
  426. 26:08And you kind of hinted at the time that
  427. 26:09you'd reached a a creative dead end with
  428. 26:11the Pixies. Was that the case?
  429. 26:15I I suppose, yeah. Mhm.
  430. 26:19Um do you do you have any plans to
  431. 26:20actually record anything soon?
  432. 26:23Um
  433. 26:24No, I mean we don't have anything
  434. 26:25booked.
  435. 26:28But it doesn't mean we won't. Yeah.
  436. 26:33We don't talk to each other that much.
  437. 26:37And it's not because we don't like each
  438. 26:38other, it's just the kind of people that
  439. 26:40we are.
  440. 29:55>> Yes, you are the nation.
  441. 29:57Some sacred place to
  442. 29:59rest my
  443. 30:00life.
  444. 30:01Rest my
  445. 30:03If you got some
  446. 30:08You can go
  447. 30:09your way.
  448. 30:11Stay all day
  449. 30:13if you want to.
  450. 30:43Sleep in the mania.
  451. 32:11>> Hey guys.
  452. 32:12All night. Nice to see you.
  453. 32:14See you. Thanks for
  454. 32:16the shows.
  455. 32:18We've got a little little present.
  456. 32:20Thanks. Oh, no. He's
  457. 32:22Oh, that's cool. There you go.
  458. 32:23Right on.
  459. 32:25And then see you guys on Wednesday.
  460. 32:26After the fastest selling shows in
  461. 32:28Brisbane UK history. Wow. Wow, really?
  462. 32:31Thanks. Great show. Thank you very so
  463. 32:33much. It was very wonderful. I
  464. 32:34appreciate it.
  465. 32:46>> It's fast.
  466. 32:48And the band
  467. 32:50fast, man.
  468. 32:51Nice, man.
  469. 32:52Yeah.
  470. 33:00All right.
  471. 33:19I am a good person.
  472. 33:22I have a positive mental attitude.
  473. 33:25I can do it.
  474. 33:27People like me.
  475. 33:30I'm cute.
  476. 33:31No.
  477. 33:55Actually, what I'd like you to do is
  478. 33:57just tap that top card. Okay.
  479. 33:59Okay.
  480. 34:00And then
  481. 34:05I haven't seen the card. Okay.
  482. 34:08You don't have a card in this deck? Yes.
  483. 34:10Okay.
  484. 34:16I haven't seen it.
  485. 34:18Take the top of that card and and put it
  486. 34:20somewhere anywhere like in the deck.
  487. 34:21Okay.
  488. 34:29Okay.
  489. 34:45>> Is that your car?
  490. 34:51All right, I'll keep working on it.
  491. 34:55You had a presentation down there.
  492. 35:15You know, I I feel like sometimes that
  493. 35:16David's sad. I look at him and I think
  494. 35:18he's sad.
  495. 35:19>> I think he is too. Do you feel like
  496. 35:20that?
  497. 35:21>> Yeah. Do you get that?
  498. 35:22>> Uh-huh.
  499. 35:23Yeah, I was feeling
  500. 35:24>> Yeah.
  501. 35:25>> chilling.
  502. 35:26But is that presumably because of his
  503. 35:28father?
  504. 35:28>> Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. You're
  505. 35:29going to be assuming that.
  506. 35:31I don't know if I'm just sad or if I'm
  507. 35:32putting that on him, you know?
  508. 35:34But I I I think it's legitimate
  509. 35:36actually.
  510. 35:37Yeah. It's sad. It's really sad.
  511. 35:50My dad had enough strength left, he was
  512. 35:52doing chemo when he was doing radiation,
  513. 35:54that he had scheduled he had to see his
  514. 35:56son in London.
  515. 35:58He had to see me.
  516. 35:59And I got him, I flew him out, and he
  517. 36:01had enough strength to get out to
  518. 36:02London. He went to Brixton Academy.
  519. 36:04Second night I did I opened up with my
  520. 36:06science show.
  521. 36:08And um I do a thing with a vortex
  522. 36:10cannon. I have this bass drum that I
  523. 36:12pull out of it, and I fill it with
  524. 36:13smoke, and I shoot the smoke rings out.
  525. 36:16And in the venue, my my parents were way
  526. 36:18up in the balcony. Like I go, "Where are
  527. 36:19my parents?" Hey, my parents here? Are
  528. 36:21they up there?
  529. 36:22There they are, my parents. Want to say
  530. 36:24hi to my parents up there?
  531. 36:27Place just all
  532. 36:30They all said hi.
  533. 36:31Did everyone say hi to you?
  534. 36:33Everyone said hi. When I said
  535. 36:36I don't know. Oh, during the during your
  536. 36:38show? During my show. Yeah.
  537. 36:40Yeah.
  538. 36:41>> You don't know? Nobody said hello to us.
  539. 36:43Whatever, dude. Your show went very
  540. 36:44well, David. I said with my mom and dad,
  541. 36:46did everybody say hi? And everybody
  542. 36:48I thought you meant did they come up
  543. 36:49personally.
  544. 36:51No. Yes, everybody turned and waved.
  545. 36:57He saw the show.
  546. 37:00He was able to get through London. He
  547. 37:01got back home.
  548. 37:03He was doing okay, okay, and all of a
  549. 37:05sudden there was about a period of a
  550. 37:06month where it just
  551. 37:08went downhill. So, I go, "Dad,
  552. 37:10I'll be back in 10 days. You wait for
  553. 37:12me. I'll see you then."
  554. 38:26>> And on um
  555. 38:29it was the last day flying back. Uh um
  556. 38:32I got the call from my mom that he
  557. 38:33passed away.
  558. 38:35And I was just finished the last show
  559. 38:37going back to Boston to see him.
  560. 38:41To care for someone that you cared for
  561. 38:42so much and loved so much and to see
  562. 38:44someone suffer so much. It was a very it
  563. 38:46was trying. It was really really tough.
  564. 38:49That's when I think I started drinking.
  565. 38:51But we respected Kim.
  566. 38:54There's been no alcohol backstage.
  567. 39:01All this Valium and alcohol.
  568. 39:06You didn't take Valium. You didn't take
  569. 39:07Valium, did you? No, I didn't take it.
  570. 39:08Why would you do that?
  571. 39:10Take Valium before a show. I need to be
  572. 39:12calm. I need to be calm before these
  573. 39:14shows.
  574. 39:15I'm very calm right now.
  575. 39:17He's taken
  576. 39:18pills and
  577. 39:20it's just not good.
  578. 39:23See, I don't imbibe, but I may ingest.
  579. 39:29That's a little joke.
  580. 39:59In heaven
  581. 40:01everything is fine.
  582. 40:05In heaven
  583. 40:07everything is fine.
  584. 40:10In heaven
  585. 40:13everything is fine.
  586. 40:16You've got
  587. 40:18your good
  588. 40:19thing.
  589. 40:28>> It's less than 5%.
  590. 40:31All beer is less pretty much less than
  591. 40:335% anyway.
  592. 40:34>> No, no, it's not the same. Wait, it's
  593. 40:36less than
  594. 40:39You know, the first one I had here
  595. 40:42that almost I I was scared. I thought
  596. 40:43somebody had given me a real beer.
  597. 40:46And I kept asking Alex. He kept
  598. 40:49insisting, "No, no, it's
  599. 40:51it's like O'Doul's. It's like O'Doul's."
  600. 40:59I'm going to have to be real careful
  601. 41:00about that.
  602. 41:35Can I get a guitar pick? Good. How are
  603. 41:36you doing tonight?
  604. 41:56Play that chord.
  605. 43:17>> Wow.
  606. 43:47How's Violet doing?
  607. 43:49She's having a baby.
  608. 43:51I just found out 2 days ago. Oh my god.
  609. 43:53She's not a sugar lady? Are you kidding?
  610. 43:55Congratulations.
  611. 43:57Oh my god.

  615. 44:07boom.
  616. 44:09All within like
  617. 44:1048 hours.
  618. 44:16But you didn't want to keep it a secret,
  619. 44:18so.
  620. 44:19What about getting married?
  621. 44:21When we're able to. Okay.
  622. 44:23I just got my divorce papers.
  623. 44:26I just printed them out as I was
  624. 44:27leaving.
  625. 44:53Um how's the tour been? How's it been
  626. 44:55going? Was there any sort of bad blood
  627. 44:57still there I mean you and Kim have had
  628. 44:59a pretty hard time of it towards the
  629. 45:01end. Well, she's in an RV. So you're not
  630. 45:03all traveling around on the same bus
  631. 45:04then?
  632. 45:05No, no, um she's she's in you know, Kim

  640. 45:41Now, this is what I've done.
  641. 45:44Can you look over my ass?
  642. 45:46My nose.
  643. 45:51Will you time it when I sing? Yes.
  644. 46:01No pursuit in the dust.
  645. 46:05And no amusements in the house.
  646. 46:09Waiting for Mercury to fall.
  647. 46:15No game, no plot.
  648. 46:19Talk it down, walk it off.
  649. 46:24Trying to get rid of the friends that I
  650. 46:27got.

  652. 46:34Till the band starts playing tonight.
  653. 46:39Make sure the drummer getting paid.
  654. 46:43And the singer gets laid.
  655. 46:47I'll be the devil's tattoo.

  660. 47:22You can do it,
  661. 47:23you're going to get it done.
  662. 47:25This was more challenging than I thought
  663. 47:26doing this on the road. Take a nap and
  664. 47:28then you can work back at work on it
  665. 47:29again after your nap.
  666. 47:31All right, bye.
  667. 47:33Bye. All right.
  668. 48:14>> David, David, where you going?
  669. 48:16This is what I'm wearing.
  670. 48:18And you've got a bright color on.
  671. 48:20I am so into music now, it's
  672. 48:22unbelievable.
  673. 48:23I cannot stop listening to music ever
  674. 48:25since I got my iPod. I'm just night and
  675. 48:27day, I'm just like walking around.
  676. 48:31I'm going to use the restroom. Whoa,
  677. 48:33whoa.
  678. 49:46Oh my god,
  679. 49:47something against the law.
  680. 49:51Oh my god,
  681. 49:53something against the law.
  682. 51:41>> Thanks a lot.
  683. 51:44What's figure out? out.
  684. 51:52We're going to regroup. We'll be right

  686. 51:54these monitors. We'll be all set. Just
  687. 51:56hold on for one sec.
  688. 52:03[ __ ] you.
  689. 52:04What the [ __ ] is going on?
  690. 52:06Hey, hey, hey.
  691. 52:07>> a [ __ ] mess up right here. [ __ ] I
  692. 52:09don't know where we are. It's just
  693. 52:11coffee and just like going on. Weird.
  694. 52:13>> I have the same earplugs in. I'm not
  695. 52:15high. I'm not on I said I said it's the
  696. 52:17same. You just went on this trip. I
  697. 52:18thought I was watching someone having a
  698. 52:20breakdown, a meltdown.
  699. 52:25You know.
  700. 52:27I couldn't understand why he kept
  701. 52:28playing. And it was all it was all a
  702. 52:30mistake and it was my monitors. You
  703. 52:32know, I don't drink before a show. Well,
  704. 52:33I'm having a glass of wine. I I wish
  705. 52:35he'd you know, stop blaming the monitors
  706. 52:38cuz it was our third night there.
  707. 52:40You know.
  708. 52:42And just admit it, you know. Admit what?
  709. 52:46Um
  710. 52:48whatever. I'm on something, you know.
  711. 52:51Sorry, I'm not in the right mind right
  712. 52:53now or whatever, you know.
  713. 52:55He's destroying himself. I think he
  714. 52:57likes he he he he's enjoying it.
  715. 53:00And when you do want to talk to him,
  716. 53:02he's got his Walkman on.
  717. 53:04I think he's avoiding communication.
  718. 53:08I think Charles wants to talk to him but
  719. 53:11you know, everything it gets swept under
  720. 53:14the rug.
  721. 53:15You know, but uh
  722. 53:17this is going to bite us in the ass one
  723. 53:19day. So,
  724. 53:21he's going to have to he's going to have
  725. 53:22to say something.
  726. 53:24You know.
  727. 53:37What do you guys hear about the Pixies?
  728. 53:38You both seem so young.
  729. 53:40>> Okay.
  730. 53:45This book, right here.
  731. 53:48What is that? It's a It's a book that I
  732. 53:50just I randomly just picked up one day.
  733. 53:53And it's like this like eighth grader
  734. 53:55girl who's like obsessed with the
  735. 53:56Pixies. And I was like, "Oh, I think
  736. 53:58I'll give them a listen." And then
  737. 54:00from there I bought everything that they
  738. 54:01ever did. Yeah, and she taught me about
  739. 54:04them.
  740. 54:08This one. You're a big Pixies fan, he
  741. 54:10says. Yeah, they're all right, I say,
  742. 54:12even though they're the best thing in
  743. 54:13the world. How can you read something
  744. 54:14like that and not think I want to hear
  745. 54:16what they sound like, you know?
  746. 54:18I did.
  747. 54:19And it was good.
  748. 54:21Me and my friends went to this like
  749. 54:22Pixies cover band type thing. We were
  750. 54:23looking for another guitarist, and no
  751. 54:25one's heard of them, you know? Like You
  752. 54:28would be the Kim Deal of the band.
  753. 54:30No.
  754. 54:31I play the bass. I'm not Kim Deal. It's
  755. 54:33not the same thing.
  756. 54:34>> the Kim Deal of the band.
  757. 54:35I hate No, that's that's not the good
  758. 54:38way to say it. Kim Deal's
  759. 54:40She's
  760. 54:42superior to most other people. You know,
  761. 54:45she's like my god. Why would I
  762. 54:47even
  763. 54:48begin to compare myself?
  764. 55:49>> You [ __ ] rock, man.
  765. 55:53Hi guys. Hey.
  766. 55:55Hey guys. Hey. Hi. Hey there. How are

  769. 56:03sure.
  770. 56:08It's going to hurt your eyes.

  772. 56:13Because
  773. 56:15You are free.
  774. 56:20Sure.

  776. 56:27person in the world.

  887. 1:02:58going to prescribe to you,
  888. 1:03:00but because he or she can
  889. 1:03:04assess what you've been prescribing

  891. 1:03:07Yeah.
  892. 1:03:09It's one that knows about alcohol and

  915. 1:05:29Oh, you could you could handle that,
  916. 1:05:30Huge. It's kind of like touching a
  917. 1:05:32almost like a rock or something. It's a
  918. 1:05:33little softer than a rock.
  919. 1:05:35>> It's cold, though. Just go for it. Just

  929. 1:07:05We'll keep well fed. We'll stay well

  933. 1:09:05>> All this
  934. 1:09:06I'm going to all the wrong rooms.
  935. 1:09:11This is the worst [ __ ] recording
  936. 1:09:12studio I've ever been to in my life.
  937. 1:09:20So, any certain part you want to shake
  938. 1:09:21it like
  939. 1:09:23to that? Yeah.
  940. 1:09:30Here we go.
  941. 1:09:32Ready? Yeah.
  942. 1:10:02Those are good. Those four right there,
  943. 1:10:04right? Okay. Yeah, good job.
  944. 1:10:08All right, I got to edit away.
  945. 1:10:10All right, later, Joe. All right, Dave,
  946. 1:10:11thanks.
  947. 1:10:16This is where I used to live right over
  948. 1:10:17here, Richard.
  949. 1:10:19Right right You can almost see the top
  950. 1:10:20of my building right on the side of the
  951. 1:10:21street there.
  952. 1:10:23Joey lived across the park over there.
  953. 1:10:25This is where we used to This is where
  954. 1:10:26the Pixies used to rehearse right right
  955. 1:10:28here.
  956. 1:10:29The Scummy
  957. 1:10:30rehearsal space.
  958. 1:10:34It had a It had a sewer cover in it. Oh.
  959. 1:10:38A manhole cover. And when it when it
  960. 1:10:40rained, it used to fill up with these
  961. 1:10:42little gnats.
  962. 1:10:43>> And I used to get had red bumps all
  963. 1:10:45over, man. I had to go to the doctors.
  964. 1:10:47Literally just smelled like [ __ ]
  965. 1:10:50It was nasty. And it cost hundreds of
  966. 1:10:53dollars a month.
  967. 1:10:54It was like an apartment.
  968. 1:10:58It was horrible.
  969. 1:11:00Slept on the bench over here when I was
  970. 1:11:01homeless.
  971. 1:11:03Why were you homeless? No reason. I was
  972. 1:11:05being stupid. I don't know.
  973. 1:11:09My lease ran out and I had a couple days
  974. 1:11:10in between.
  975. 1:11:12I was like, "I know, I'll just stay up
  976. 1:11:13all night."
  977. 1:11:16Go to diners and the movies and stuff
  978. 1:11:19and walk around. And it was like getting
  979. 1:11:21cold. I was like, "Ugh."
  980. 1:11:37Is this your first jaunt to New York
  981. 1:11:39City sober?
  982. 1:11:41No.
  983. 1:11:44Oh my gosh. I think it is.
  984. 1:11:48Let me think.
  985. 1:11:52Yeah, it is.
  986. 1:11:55Yes, it is. First time in New York City
  987. 1:11:57sober.
  988. 1:12:00Going to be there for like 9 days.
  989. 1:12:01>> a big deal. It's not much of a party
  990. 1:12:02town. No, it's not a big deal. Not at
  991. 1:12:04all.
  992. 1:12:30Oh, hi.
  993. 1:12:31Hey.
  994. 1:12:33Sorry, Linda. Linda, this isn't the way
  995. 1:12:35to go. Hi, JOE.
  996. 1:12:37HI, JOE.
  997. 1:12:40HI.
  998. 1:12:41HOW ARE YOU?
  999. 1:12:43Can I have a kiss?
  1000. 1:12:44Kiss? Kiss?
  1001. 1:12:47Can I have a kiss?
  1002. 1:12:48Huh?
  1003. 1:12:49Hi.
  1004. 1:12:54What Joseph? Right here.
1005. 1:12:57This is your son. This is
  1006. 1:12:59remember him?
1007. 1:13:03Joe, I'm your dad. How you doing?
  1008. 1:13:14Hi Charles. Yeah.
  1009. 1:13:17All right.
  1010. 1:13:19How you doing Charles?
  1011. 1:13:21Awesome.
1012. 1:13:23Try to ask him for
1013. 1:13:35I've heard you talk about how you
1014. 1:13:36wouldn't mind going to do some festivals
1015. 1:13:38next year. Is that something that you
1016. 1:13:39would be interested in doing with the
  1017. 1:13:40Pixies?
1018. 1:13:42And maybe Big Day Out.
1019. 1:13:43>> Kelly, it seems that if there's a demand
1020. 1:13:45and people are really excited to see us
1021. 1:13:48and they can have shows booked, you
1022. 1:13:50know, it seems like fun.
  1023. 1:13:53But if it's like
1024. 1:13:55it's peaked and nobody wants to see us
1025. 1:13:57and we're going to have to struggle to
1026. 1:13:59to show up someplace, then that doesn't
  1027. 1:14:02seem fun. Right.
1028. 1:14:05So you have a stack of songs I guess
1029. 1:14:07that you want to bring in and What's
1030. 1:14:09that? the Pixies to record? Or you you
  1031. 1:14:11want to
1032. 1:14:12you want to get the
1033. 1:14:14creative juices flowing? We got We got
1034. 1:14:15to go go rehearse in someone's garage
  1035. 1:14:17whenever There you go.
1036. 1:14:19See what the vibe is. We should really
1037. 1:14:20just start over with a different name.
1038. 1:14:23Really? All over. That's the only way we
1039. 1:14:24can keep it honest I think, you know.
1040. 1:14:26The Vomit Squad. Nice. Just go start
1041. 1:14:29playing clubs, you know what I mean?
1042. 1:14:31Just like start all over right from
  1043. 1:14:33scratch.
1044. 1:14:34>> That would That would be the only cool
1045. 1:14:35way to do it I think. That'd be good.
  1046. 1:14:37Okay, what about a record?
  1047. 1:14:39I don't know. Charles is having a baby.
1048. 1:14:41Joe's got to go to the
1049. 1:14:42>> Listen, Charles isn't having the baby.
  1050. 1:14:45Okay?
  1051. 1:14:52Okay, it's nice and vague.
1052. 1:14:55I'm not being vague at all.
  1053. 1:14:56>> No, I know. You're You're demanding
1054. 1:14:58answers to questions that don't have any
1055. 1:15:00answers to. Are we doing another album?
  1056. 1:15:02I don't know. I don't think I don't
1057. 1:15:03think so. This tour hasn't really been
  1058. 1:15:05about that at all.
1059. 1:15:15Have they heard the any of this stuff?
  1060. 1:15:16The Pixies?
1061. 1:15:18I played a little bit for Kim and I
1062. 1:15:19played a little bit for Joey just to
1063. 1:15:22just to let you know.
1064. 1:15:26Let them know that I'm still in the
  1065. 1:15:27songwriting business. Okay.
  1066. 1:15:31I mean that seems pretty self-evident
  1067. 1:15:32though, I mean A little indirect
1068. 1:15:34pressure. Okay. Come on, you guys.
1069. 1:15:37Right, pony up some songs.
1070. 1:15:40Or, you know, just a little you know,
1071. 1:15:41let them know that I'm ready to go
1072. 1:15:43whenever they want to like book the
1073. 1:15:45session. You know what I mean? That kind
1074. 1:15:47of thing. Just like, "Hey,
  1075. 1:15:48>> Really?" if you don't book a session,
1076. 1:15:50I'm just going to keep recording these
1077. 1:15:51damn Nashville records, you know.
  1078. 1:15:53So, anyway, it's just like a friendly
  1079. 1:15:55little way of
1080. 1:15:56keeping the pressure on, you know.
  1081. 1:16:08Kim,
1082. 1:16:09we're going to start off with uh like we
  1083. 1:16:11earlier.
  1084. 1:16:13Uh
  1085. 1:16:15Slow Wave Heaven.
  1086. 1:16:17And I'll finish the set
1087. 1:16:19with "Where Is My Mind?" by my most
  1088. 1:16:21gigantic encore.
  1089. 1:16:23Can I get a set list? That's the whole
1090. 1:16:25Yeah. Okay. Have a good last show. Thank
  1091. 1:16:27you.
  1092. 1:16:28How's it going?
