  24. 1:03darkest eyes I have ever seen he can put
  25. 1:07on the mask of Bernard Eugene Giles but
  26. 1:12when you take off the mask he's the
  27. 1:14monster I want to know how these men
  28. 1:18think and why they
  29. 1:20killed and now finally a serial killer
  30. 1:24willing to confess all are you proud of
  31. 1:27the label serial killer
  32. 1:35[Music]
  33. 1:45one summer in the early
  34. 1:471970s a young couple moved into this
  35. 1:50trailer park on the east coast of
  36. 1:53Florida Bernard Giles was just 20 his
  37. 1:56wife was
  38. 1:5818 and they had a new born
  39. 2:01daughter neither his family or his new
  40. 2:04neighbors had any reason to suspect that
  41. 2:06Giles was harboring a deep compulsion to
  42. 2:09kill see the trailer with the carport
  43. 2:13structure that's where his trailer was
  44. 2:16Sunday afternoon was my laundry day and
  45. 2:19it just seemed like I ran into him so
  46. 2:21much in there oh it's it's I it's the
  47. 2:24same I can't believe that he would be
  48. 2:27sitting up here just I usually get those
  49. 2:31down there he never said a word he no
  50. 2:33never and he'd be sitting here and just
  51. 2:36dangling his legs and just
  52. 2:39looking wonder why he would sit in here
  53. 2:42I don't
  54. 2:43know cuz I don't think he ever had any
  55. 2:49laundry Bernard Giles has been in prison
  56. 2:52for 45
  57. 2:55years after a long period of contact
  58. 2:59he's finally agreed to meet
  59. 3:03[Music]
  60. 3:07me Mr Charles good to see you morning
  61. 3:09sir thank you come and sit
  62. 3:17down Berner thank you for giving us the
  63. 3:20time today yes sir you're serving five
  64. 3:24life sentences for killing five young
  65. 3:27women so my first question is did you
  66. 3:30kill those women yes sir I
  67. 3:34did let's go back to your early life
  68. 3:37with most people that commit heinous
  69. 3:40crimes yes you can normally point to
  70. 3:42something that doesn't justify but might
  71. 3:45go some way to explaining it the Curious
  72. 3:49Thing about your early life is there
  73. 3:51doesn't seem to be anything there there
  74. 3:54was no appalling upbringing you were one
  75. 3:57of four kids yeah you were well taken
  76. 3:59care care of my brothers and sisters
  77. 4:01have done well you were loved as a
  78. 4:05child
  79. 4:07yes and was the driving force for that
  80. 4:10compulsion was it violence was it sexual
  81. 4:14it was all sexual it was all sexual and
  82. 4:17that's the thing it's like um people who
  83. 4:21they become
  84. 4:23imprinted before they're five or six I
  85. 4:27knew the roots of mine I knew where it
  86. 4:29came from where did it come from you the
  87. 4:32initial sexual imprinting was an act of
  88. 4:34violence
  89. 4:35against a girl you were 6 years old and
  90. 4:39you were playing just a game of of Witch
  91. 4:41Hunt where a girl would pretend to be a
  92. 4:44witch and you would all chase after she
  93. 4:46was a a neighbor of yours right was in
  94. 4:48in a a back
  95. 4:49bedroom and
  96. 4:52uh the part that I remember was
  97. 4:54straddling her and strangling her right
  98. 4:59playing
  99. 5:01and
  100. 5:03uh that was my initial sexual imprint
  101. 5:07from that point on as a child growing up
  102. 5:11I became obsessed with
  103. 5:16this the term itself serial killer was
  104. 5:20uh not well known back in the
  105. 5:241970s however later we started seeing
  106. 5:27these terms come up in the detective
  107. 5:30magazines and other kinds of TV shows
  108. 5:34but mostly we believe that the serial
  109. 5:37killers happened somewhere
  110. 5:40else Berard Giles was one of Florida's
  111. 5:43first serial killers he terrorized an
  112. 5:45entire
  113. 5:47community in just 12 weeks he murdered
  114. 5:50five
  115. 5:54women two of the bodies were found just
  116. 5:57yards from his trailer where he lived
  117. 5:59with with his wife and
  118. 6:01child Bob teler was a young State's
  119. 6:04Attorney at the time he discovered their
  120. 6:07remains it stayed with him ever since so
  121. 6:12Bob when you found these two bodies
  122. 6:14within two days it must have sent a
  123. 6:17shudder through everybody well back then
  124. 6:20and of course it was a different time
  125. 6:21and a different place and girls were
  126. 6:24hitchhiking it was a common occurrence
  127. 6:26to see that up and down the road uh
  128. 6:28particularly in a small Community like
  129. 6:30this all that stopped overnight uh there
  130. 6:34was a shutter that went through the
  131. 6:36community there was publicity about this
  132. 6:39the hitchhiking stopped and people
  133. 6:41started looking over their shoulder what
  134. 6:43this man did Bernard Giles to these
  135. 6:46young women was just appalling it it was
  136. 6:50and you know it's every parents
  137. 6:52nightmare to realized that the last few
  138. 6:54moments of her life were Terror filled
  139. 6:57with a psychopath and
  140. 7:00she was going to die at a young age just
  141. 7:02makes it even
  142. 7:07worse throughout his childhood there
  143. 7:10were no outward signs that Berard Giles
  144. 7:13was deeply
  145. 7:14troubled but into his teens he was
  146. 7:17failing at school and dropped
  147. 7:21out and then one day his obsession took
  148. 7:25over when he was 16 there was a young
  149. 7:28woman walking in front of you and you
  150. 7:31suddenly
  151. 7:32felt an urge to kill her tell me about
  152. 7:36that was like an an opportunity that had
  153. 7:40presented itself to me and this woman
  154. 7:43was getting in with VW and I had a knife
  155. 7:47and I went past the car and fortunately
  156. 7:52I kept going I just kept going what were
  157. 7:54you feeling in that moment
  158. 7:57extraordinarily hyped
  159. 7:59and what were you thinking you may do to
  160. 8:01that woman well if if it had gone the
  161. 8:05other way I'd have murdered
  162. 8:07her at the age of 16 yes
  163. 8:12sir I it's a chilling thing to hear this
  164. 8:15is not I'm sure you recognize this this
  165. 8:18is not a normal oh I understand that
  166. 8:20none of this feels normal sir you're 16
  167. 8:24years old and you have just this
  168. 8:26extraordinary compulsion to kill this
  169. 8:28woman yes sir
  170. 8:29but it passed you moved on yes sir it
  171. 8:33was it just wasn't overwhelming it
  172. 8:35didn't you know it was
  173. 8:37just and I didn't I just kept
  174. 8:40moving and if you hadn't kept moving
  175. 8:42that woman would have been
  176. 8:45murdered and she would have no idea to
  177. 8:47this day I imagine no she didn't even
  178. 8:50she never even glanced back at
  179. 8:53me you wished you had killed her no I
  180. 8:56don't I'm glad that I didn't I wish I
  181. 8:58hadn't killed any of my
  182. 9:00victims you know were you in any doubt
  183. 9:03at that stage that one day it would
  184. 9:06happen no no doubt at all you knew this
  185. 9:09was something you had to do yes sir it
  186. 9:13was for me this was my life's passion up
  187. 9:17to that
  188. 9:21point to do what to murder to murder
  189. 9:28women
  190. 9:35[Music]
  191. 9:38I mean there'll be viewers watching this
  192. 9:40going this guy
  193. 9:41was apparently normal late teenage
  194. 9:46guy he's got married he's got a little
  195. 9:48baby
  196. 9:50girl life seems fine and yet ticking
  197. 9:54away is this this horrific time
  198. 9:58bomb and that's very frequently been the
  199. 10:01case that you have people that they
  200. 10:04present as perfectly
  201. 10:09normal you know you're looking for these
  202. 10:12sort of trigger
  203. 10:14points where is that trigger that what
  204. 10:17happens and it may very well have been
  205. 10:20the stresses he felt in being married
  206. 10:23being you know a 19 20y old guy with a
  207. 10:27child and and really you can see him
  208. 10:30here this he's not really equipped to be
  209. 10:33dealing with marriage let alone a baby
  210. 10:35this probably caused a tremendous amount
  211. 10:38of stress for him and I'm not surprised
  212. 10:40that these killings started really
  213. 10:44within a month or two after the birth of
  214. 10:47his
  215. 10:53child in October
  216. 10:551973 Bernard Giles drove out of this
  217. 10:58trailer park
  218. 10:59onto this highway his intention to hunt
  219. 11:03down and kill his first
  220. 11:06victim he was looking for hitchhikers
  221. 11:09unsuspecting girls who back then never
  222. 11:13imagined accepting a lift from a
  223. 11:14stranger would get them
  224. 11:17killed that day that you went out when
  225. 11:20you did Kill for the first time was that
  226. 11:23the morning when you woke up and you
  227. 11:25were with your wife and daughter and you
  228. 11:26just something hit you and you went no
  229. 11:29today may be the day every day may be
  230. 11:32the
  231. 11:33day every day every day may be the day
  232. 11:37do you know the name of your first
  233. 11:38victim no
  234. 11:40sir not now
  235. 11:43I Jerry Nancy Jerry did you know
  236. 11:47anything about her life I found out
  237. 11:48later she was a singer in a uh in a
  238. 11:53bar that was it tell me what
  239. 11:57happened picked her up and tight his
  240. 12:00there's a wooded area and I pulled off
  241. 12:02the road what does she look like um
  242. 12:06little shorter than
  243. 12:08me um fairly wellb built pretty but not
  244. 12:12particularly pretty brown
  245. 12:16hair it's about
  246. 12:19it and at what point did she realize
  247. 12:22that you were kind of har her well did
  248. 12:25not necessarily I was going to harm her
  249. 12:28cuz you know most most of them don't
  250. 12:29assume you're you're actually going to
  251. 12:31to kill them most of them assume it's a
  252. 12:34rape or something like that or a robbery
  253. 12:37or whatever you know and uh had you been
  254. 12:41talking normally to her yeah but there
  255. 12:44wasn't much to the
  256. 12:46conversation the the weapon speaks for
  257. 12:49itself and what did you then do told her
  258. 12:53to get out of the car and that's when
  259. 12:54she became afraid you uh up to that
  260. 12:58point I assumed that she thought it was
  261. 13:00just going to be a rape I walked her
  262. 13:02over next in front of a tree and I shot
  263. 13:07her just like that yes
  264. 13:10sir and what were you feeling as you did
  265. 13:26that very stim ated very provoked
  266. 13:32very I mean the thing is is you
  267. 13:37know what is your passion in your life
  268. 13:41you know what is the thing that you like
  269. 13:43to do more than anything
  270. 13:46else and you're doing
  271. 13:49it you are so
  272. 13:53there that it you can almost it's like
  273. 13:55you can see the atoms vibrating I mean
  274. 13:58it's just
  275. 14:00just it's difficult to
  276. 14:06describe jazz is relatively unusual in
  277. 14:08that he started his age of onset for the
  278. 14:11serial killing was age 20 he's unusual
  279. 14:14because he did a spade of five killings
  280. 14:16within 3 months with almost no cooling
  281. 14:18off period That's highly unusual usually
  282. 14:21mid-20s is the Advent of the first
  283. 14:24acting out on the fantasy there's a long
  284. 14:26cooling off period of at least a month
  285. 14:28before the second one he was acting
  286. 14:31almost in a frenzy he was too young and
  287. 14:33too immature to put enough thought into
  288. 14:35his crimes to get away with him there
  289. 14:36was no way it was sustainable so it was
  290. 14:39almost like a childish urge to get as
  291. 14:42much fun crammed into a short space of
  292. 14:44time as possible before he got caught
  293. 14:47because inside he knew he would
  294. 14:49eventually get
  295. 14:55caught once Bernard Giles started
  296. 14:58killing
  297. 14:59he made little attempt to hide the
  298. 15:00bodies of his
  299. 15:03victims their Discovery was now making
  300. 15:07Daily News
  301. 15:10Headlines Titusville a city where a
  302. 15:13million visitors had come just four
  303. 15:15years before to watch Neil Armstrong
  304. 15:17blast off to the
  305. 15:19moon was now the focus of a desperate
  306. 15:22manh hunt to find the
  307. 15:25killer ladies you were all young women
  308. 15:28you were all in your early 20s at the
  309. 15:30time that this all happened take me back
  310. 15:33to life in the area at the time well
  311. 15:37this was a sleepy little town right
  312. 15:39across from the Space Center exactly and
  313. 15:41it was uh everyone wanted to come here
  314. 15:44because of the Space Center the launches
  315. 15:46and everything but when where we lived
  316. 15:48in Mobile Manor it was a really nice
  317. 15:51area the moment you realize that Bernard
  318. 15:55Giles he was this guy that lived in that
  319. 15:59trailer opposite you what impact did
  320. 16:02that have on you guys devastated me I
  321. 16:04was stunned I was like whoa look how
  322. 16:08close this guy was to
  323. 16:11me I could have been one of his
  324. 16:17victims what was your criteria for for a
  325. 16:21victim access to any woman yes sir did
  326. 16:26it matter how old they were or what they
  327. 16:28looked like M
  328. 16:31go generally speaking
  329. 16:34no I could literally have been any woman
  330. 16:37that happened to stray into your orbit
  331. 16:40yes sir when you were cruising in your
  332. 16:42car and they were thumbing a lift yes
  333. 16:44sir I mean that made you at the time an
  334. 16:47unbelievably dangerous man for any young
  335. 16:50woman yes
  336. 16:52sir see I'm not I'm not defending the
  337. 16:56position I'm describing the position
  338. 16:58decision it was what I was and where I
  339. 17:02was at were you aware that there was now
  340. 17:05a hunt for what police began to realize
  341. 17:08was a serial
  342. 17:12killer not not really until you know I I
  343. 17:15had known that they had found a
  344. 17:18body that was Paula's
  345. 17:21body yes sir probably I
  346. 17:27guess Paula Hamrick was a single mother
  347. 17:30of two heading to work one day when
  348. 17:33Berard Gil stopped to offer her a
  349. 17:37lift a body was found
  350. 17:40here she was his oldest victim at just
  351. 17:4522 her two boys Steven and Billy were
  352. 17:50just toddlers at the
  353. 17:53time he knew she had kids but I'm sure
  354. 17:57she pleaded for her life and told him
  355. 18:00that she had two babies and like I said
  356. 18:03that answered my question he obviously
  357. 18:04didn't
  358. 18:05care cuz he killed her
  359. 18:09anyways I think uh it
  360. 18:12was about 12 years old when he went to
  361. 18:16my mother's uh grave
  362. 18:27site
  363. 18:31the first victim you remember the name
  364. 18:33but do you remember the names of any of
  365. 18:34the victims no sir none at all no they
  366. 18:38meant nothing to
  367. 18:40you why would I do
  368. 18:44that why would someone embrace the names
  369. 18:49of the excuse me of their
  370. 18:52victims I saw these women as
  371. 18:56objects this woman Paula Hamrick who was
  372. 19:00a a mom of two young kids who've never
  373. 19:03known their
  374. 19:04mother you know she'd thought to
  375. 19:06humanize herself to you she might still
  376. 19:09be alive but she didn't say you killed
  377. 19:12her yes
  378. 19:16sir this
  379. 19:18Carolyn very young yes
  380. 19:22sir do you remember these faces as I
  381. 19:25show you them no sir I true I
  382. 19:29don't 14 this
  383. 19:32girl as was this one 14 do you remember
  384. 19:37no
  385. 19:38sir you don't really remember any of
  386. 19:40these girls by
  387. 19:43face no
  388. 19:45sir some women actually Sav their lives
  389. 19:50by engaging me in conversations how many
  390. 19:54three I can think of right off I
  391. 19:55actually went to the home of one the
  392. 19:59uh I got in a conversation about uh
  393. 20:02smoking uh marijuana she rolled up a few
  394. 20:08joints we drove around the neighborhood
  395. 20:10and smoked one and I let her off at her
  396. 20:12house and what were you thinking you may
  397. 20:15do to that woman well if if it had gone
  398. 20:18the other way I'd have murdered
  399. 20:27her for a guy like this
  400. 20:31really what's important for him is what
  401. 20:34he
  402. 20:35wants and what he wants he's going to
  403. 20:38get I want to kill these women and I
  404. 20:41want to have sex with them and when I'm
  405. 20:43done I'm just going to leave them right
  406. 20:46there in the
  407. 20:47dirt because I don't really care about
  408. 20:50them and then I'm going to go back to my
  409. 20:52wife and there they won't know any
  410. 20:54difference I won't have any change in in
  411. 20:57Emotion
  412. 21:00what what I struggle with with you you
  413. 21:02kill five women but all the time you're
  414. 21:05going back to your marital home yes sir
  415. 21:09with Leslie your wife and your daughter
  416. 21:11Heather sir how are you functioning in
  417. 21:13normal married life in this
  418. 21:17extraordinary 12 13 week
  419. 21:21period
  420. 21:25badly what do you mean
  421. 21:29I don't know it was just as this thing's
  422. 21:32taking me over I'm I'm kind of
  423. 21:34disintegrating as a
  424. 21:36person the
  425. 21:39um um me and my wife are fighting all
  426. 21:42the time I'm out it's
  427. 21:46it's obsessions take you over did you
  428. 21:49get any urge to kill your wife no never
  429. 21:52no why not she was there she was a woman
  430. 21:56I knew her
  431. 21:59you know I I've never killed anybody I
  432. 22:01knew it's that thing about
  433. 22:03objectification of the the
  434. 22:07victim for me that was an important
  435. 22:17element do you remember doing that no
  436. 22:20sir was 45 years since you have probably
  437. 22:23seen
  438. 22:25that just moment
  439. 22:30this is a little strange for me because
  440. 22:33I recognize elements of my own
  441. 22:36style and yet I I can't remember doing
  442. 22:38these
  443. 22:42honestly you definitely
  444. 22:47didn't know that's strange for real I
  445. 22:51mean that that one there for example yes
  446. 22:53when you look at it not withstanding the
  447. 22:55fact you you can't remember it very well
  448. 22:57but it's a very maab image yes ad a
  449. 23:00young woman you have a sort of devil
  450. 23:03likee figure at the top there
  451. 23:05skeleton that's not a
  452. 23:07woman that's not no or is that you I
  453. 23:12don't know you had long hair at the time
  454. 23:14I had long hair at the time so that
  455. 23:16could have been you in fact it could
  456. 23:17have been me it's got needles it's got
  457. 23:19snakes it's got skeletons you know it's
  458. 23:21a very maab not a happy scene right
  459. 23:26right
  460. 23:28Giles Drew these pictures at the time of
  461. 23:30the
  462. 23:34murders but had there been any early
  463. 23:36warning signs that might have alerted
  464. 23:39people to what was
  465. 23:41coming you were at school with him you
  466. 23:43hung out with him every day you saw this
  467. 23:45guy in junior high school 6566 nicest
  468. 23:48guy you'd ever want to meet I mean we
  469. 23:50hear this a lot don't we with people
  470. 23:51that do heinous crimes often friends
  471. 23:54will come out and say oh he was such a
  472. 23:56nice guy but you mean it I mean you I
  473. 23:59mean it sincerely it was just a sweet
  474. 24:02young artistic gifted nice guy when did
  475. 24:07you last see
  476. 24:08him it was probably and I believe that
  477. 24:12he might have already been killing
  478. 24:14people then uh it was on the river did
  479. 24:18he seem different to you yes in what
  480. 24:21way he was uh very intensely uh working
  481. 24:25on a drawing and it was pretty dark I
  482. 24:27looked over and I saw a tree and some
  483. 24:30Roots but in the roots of the tree was a
  484. 24:34female
  485. 24:35body being engulfed in the tree
  486. 24:40[Music]
  487. 24:47wow in any of the psych reports all of
  488. 24:51them describe him as
  489. 24:53sane all of them describe him as in
  490. 24:56charge of his faculties he's he not
  491. 24:58psychotic and he's not mentally ill he's
  492. 25:01in touch with reality he clearly
  493. 25:04understands this concept of right and
  494. 25:06wrong and we know he understands it
  495. 25:08because he made a conscious effort to
  496. 25:10take these women to a remote location
  497. 25:13where he wouldn't be discovered and kill
  498. 25:16them if he didn't understand the concept
  499. 25:18he probably would have just picked them
  500. 25:20up and then killed him right on the
  501. 25:21street in front of
  502. 25:23everybody he chooses to do wrong because
  503. 25:26that's what he wants to do
  504. 25:29it seems that Giles was able to hide his
  505. 25:32true nature from everyone that knew
  506. 25:35him including his new wife
  507. 25:39Leslie they'd been married for barely a
  508. 25:42year when the killings
  509. 25:46began let me just take you back to just
  510. 25:48before you first killed you meet a woman
  511. 25:51you fall in love you get married her
  512. 25:53name is Leslie yes tell me about her
  513. 25:57good good woman good woman first time I
  514. 26:00ever saw my
  515. 26:03wife she was a friend of my sisters she
  516. 26:05just made friends with my sister and um
  517. 26:10they passed through the living room I
  518. 26:11was sitting there watching television
  519. 26:13and when I
  520. 26:15saw Leslie I knew I was going to marry
  521. 26:18her you know there have been numerous
  522. 26:20instances in my life where I it's just I
  523. 26:25know something I just remember that you
  524. 26:27know that's the one right there do you
  525. 26:30remember how you proposed to her over
  526. 26:32the phone that was it yeah not very
  527. 26:35romantic you're young young man but you
  528. 26:38marrying this beautiful young woman
  529. 26:40family there it all seems normal yeah
  530. 26:44did it feel normal to you that day when
  531. 26:46you got married yes sir but you would
  532. 26:48have sex with your wife you had a normal
  533. 26:51married life in that respect yes sir and
  534. 26:54did you feel like you loved
  535. 26:56her
  536. 26:58yes but truthfully I didn't you know I
  537. 27:02did love
  538. 27:03her but you
  539. 27:05know I was completely obsessed with this
  540. 27:08other thing and I didn't really realize
  541. 27:10how much I did love my wife until the
  542. 27:14like the last time I ever saw her
  543. 27:16through you know half inch bulletproof
  544. 27:19glass you
  545. 27:22know during the killings his wife was at
  546. 27:26home caring for that baby daughter
  547. 27:28water Giles would leave the trailer each
  548. 27:31day to train as an
  549. 27:34electrician but in the afternoons he
  550. 27:37would Cruise the highways looking for
  551. 27:40hitchhikers the police still had no
  552. 27:43suspects and no
  553. 27:46leads there was a Fear Factor and as a
  554. 27:50result uh people were locking their
  555. 27:52doors and people were uh trying to
  556. 27:55gather more information from the
  557. 27:57newspapers and uh from television which
  558. 28:01carried very little uh but uh they were
  559. 28:04following it very closely but they were
  560. 28:07still
  561. 28:08afraid what's even more scary is uh it
  562. 28:11wasn't somebody traveling through
  563. 28:15because victims were
  564. 28:17localized there had to be someone
  565. 28:20responsible from within so who could it
  566. 28:24be and normally when we'd have any kind
  567. 28:26of a murder or something
  568. 28:28within 24 hours they had a suspect they
  569. 28:30knew who they were going after and
  570. 28:31pretty much were right and I remember a
  571. 28:34lot of times during that period it got
  572. 28:36to where I was working like 7 days a
  573. 28:38week and it was driving them crazy that
  574. 28:40it was taking so long to figure this one
  575. 28:42out when I would be on my lunch break or
  576. 28:44go home from work I would see some young
  577. 28:47girls hitchhiking knowing there's
  578. 28:49already been two or three murdered I
  579. 28:52would just pull over roll down my window
  580. 28:54and say hey don't you girls know what's
  581. 28:57going going
  582. 28:58on the killings have begun in October of
  583. 29:031973 by December three bodies had been
  584. 29:08found and then the police discovered the
  585. 29:10remains of Sharon weymer she was just 14
  586. 29:13years
  587. 29:15old but what is baffling about this
  588. 29:18murder is where he killed
  589. 29:21her well what strikes me about this
  590. 29:23location is we're so near to the trailer
  591. 29:26park where Bernard Giles lived with his
  592. 29:29own young family and the body was so
  593. 29:32easily discoverable this is a very
  594. 29:34Brazen serial killer he's almost like
  595. 29:37crying out to be caught in in a way yes
  596. 29:40but in another way you get Hunters back
  597. 29:43in here and everything too so that the
  598. 29:46sound of a gunshot wouldn't necessarily
  599. 29:49tell everybody around that something
  600. 29:51unusual like that is going on what we
  601. 29:54discovered was that there was jewelry
  602. 29:56there a necklace and maybe a bracelet
  603. 30:00and quite identifiable jewelry we
  604. 30:02strongly suspected the police did that
  605. 30:04this was Sharon lmer and uh we left and
  606. 30:07at the residence were siblings plus her
  607. 30:10mother and uh we showed them the jewelry
  608. 30:13and very very sad I mean the kids are
  609. 30:17crying mom's on the couch in denial no
  610. 30:21it can't be that it can't be that and
  611. 30:23the kids are saying no Mom it is it is
  612. 30:26and that's we got the identification
  613. 30:28that kind of stuff sticks with you
  614. 30:30through the
  615. 30:32[Music]
  616. 30:39years but two of your victims you took
  617. 30:43back to within a few hundred yards of
  618. 30:45where you lived what was your thinking
  619. 30:47in doing
  620. 30:48that I wasn't
  621. 30:51thinking there's no logical reason for
  622. 30:54having done that it's quite a high risk
  623. 30:57thing to do I guess yeah but I wasn't
  624. 30:59doing my best thinking at that point in
  625. 31:01time you didn't really care well they
  626. 31:04have an expression you're basically off
  627. 31:06the chain I was
  628. 31:10uh like I said I'm not I wasn't doing my
  629. 31:12best I
  630. 31:18game after each killing that need to
  631. 31:21feel that again is there and it's urgent
  632. 31:24but it's even
  633. 31:26bigger
  634. 31:28we see this with so many serial killers
  635. 31:30with each one they have to come up with
  636. 31:31some new angle to make it more violent
  637. 31:34more horrific um more Hands-On more
  638. 31:37personal make the victim younger make
  639. 31:40the victim big they have to try some new
  640. 31:42angle to keep that thrill alive but of
  641. 31:45course this isn't sustainable at some
  642. 31:48point or another they either get caught
  643. 31:50or they become so frenetic that they
  644. 31:52have no choice but to screw up and
  645. 31:54police find
  646. 31:56them and that is exactly what happened
  647. 31:59with burnard
  648. 32:01Giles 12 weeks after the murders began
  649. 32:05he made a crucial mistake along this
  650. 32:08isolated
  651. 32:12Road when you were finally caught you
  652. 32:17tried to pick up two girls at the same
  653. 32:19time yes sir but it feels like it was an
  654. 32:21escalation and that's exactly it I was
  655. 32:25getting
  656. 32:26worse that's where you made your big
  657. 32:28mistake because they got away how did
  658. 32:31they get away I mean you had a gun the
  659. 32:33gun
  660. 32:34misfired I had hit one of them with the
  661. 32:38gun and it discharged it jammed inside
  662. 32:41the gun and that's when they ran off
  663. 32:44that's when they ran off they got away
  664. 32:46having seen a form in your car which had
  665. 32:49your name on a
  666. 32:56book
  667. 32:58they
  668. 32:59saw a book that had a name in it and the
  669. 33:04name was Bernard
  670. 33:07Giles I checked files and uh it gave his
  671. 33:13address inspector D come in and he says
  672. 33:17you got to listen to me listen to me
  673. 33:20good keep your doors locked do not
  674. 33:24answer it he says we're going to make an
  675. 33:26arrest
  676. 33:28and these murders I said here he said
  677. 33:31yes I was shaking we could have been the
  678. 33:34next
  679. 33:36victim and did you panic basically yeah
  680. 33:39I didn't know that they had actually had
  681. 33:43my name so about the time that I get
  682. 33:46home the police are setting up you know
  683. 33:49and that they got
  684. 33:52me I wasn't the only one who peaked out
  685. 33:55our door to see him when they brought
  686. 33:58him in to the area and he
  687. 34:03was
  688. 34:04evil he was Satan
  689. 34:09personified when you were caught was it
  690. 34:12a
  691. 34:15relief no no it wasn't a relief were you
  692. 34:19angry because it meant you probably
  693. 34:20wouldn't be able to kill again no I
  694. 34:22wasn't
  695. 34:24angry life got very complicated
  696. 34:28how did your wife react to you being
  697. 34:32arrested well at first uh she she wanted
  698. 34:35to to to stay with me but you know I
  699. 34:40basically understood that you know I was
  700. 34:43I was over I was done with but did she
  701. 34:46ask you if it was
  702. 34:47true uh yes sir and the first time she
  703. 34:50asked me I lied to
  704. 34:52her she knew I had problems but not this
  705. 34:56kind of a lot you know she just didn't
  706. 34:58know how deep it was you know I'm I'm
  707. 35:00sure she must have
  708. 35:02suspected I mean not that I had done
  709. 35:05that but after I'd gotten arrested that
  710. 35:08yeah okay that's that's
  711. 35:13him we've been talking now for over an
  712. 35:16hour but I was yet to see any real sign
  713. 35:19of emotion from burnard
  714. 35:22Giles so I wonder how will he react when
  715. 35:25I show him a picture
  716. 35:27of the daughter he hasn't seen in 45
  717. 35:30[Music]
  718. 35:38years you seem when it comes to real
  719. 35:42emotions yeah pretty cold I mean yeah I
  720. 35:45get that a lot when was the last time
  721. 35:47you cried about
  722. 35:50anything
  723. 35:53Braveheart I saw the movie
  724. 35:55Braveheart when
  725. 36:001998 99 some place long in there there
  726. 36:0320 years ago been a while and why did
  727. 36:05that make you
  728. 36:06cry Hollywood presents this you know
  729. 36:10really pristine picture of a human being
  730. 36:13what you you sort of wish you could be
  731. 36:16you know this this this perfect human
  732. 36:20being and I was basically crying because
  733. 36:22I was mourning my
  734. 36:25life
  735. 36:27[Music]
  736. 36:29Berard Giles was just 20 when he was
  737. 36:33caught he avoided the death penalty by
  738. 36:36agreeing to confess to all five
  739. 36:39murders but he will die in
  740. 36:45prison soon after the killings his wife
  741. 36:48and daughter left the trailer park and
  742. 36:51moved out of the
  743. 36:52state he would never see them again
  744. 36:58you lost a wife you lost your daughter I
  745. 37:00lost everything you lost everything
  746. 37:04yeah was it worth it this no of course
  747. 37:07not and do you know what happened to
  748. 37:09your daughter did you ever heard from
  749. 37:11her no no sir how does that make you
  750. 37:17feel what can you do with that we had a
  751. 37:20we had a
  752. 37:21picture the
  753. 37:25the you
  754. 37:28what do you feel when you see your
  755. 37:32daughter I don't know
  756. 37:35exactly when you look at your own
  757. 37:37daughter that age smiling innocent happy
  758. 37:41what do you feel about
  759. 37:44the the young woman you
  760. 37:46killed I I don't put those
  761. 37:52together I mean what would you feel
  762. 37:54about a
  763. 37:55man who snatched your
  764. 37:59daughter and terrorized and raped and
  765. 38:04killed
  766. 38:05her I certainly wouldn't appreciate
  767. 38:08it that that's it that's how you'd
  768. 38:13feel like I said I certainly wouldn't
  769. 38:17appreciate
  770. 38:21it you've never
  771. 38:24apologized to who who do you think you
  772. 38:27should apologize
  773. 38:30to let me ask you a question I assume
  774. 38:35that to the the families of the
  775. 38:40victims I think I mean it should be
  776. 38:42incumbent on you as the perpetrator of
  777. 38:44the crime to work out who you think you
  778. 38:47maybe should apologize to I mean you
  779. 38:49killed by your own admission these five
  780. 38:51young women who do you think you owe an
  781. 38:54apology
  782. 38:55to if I were going to apologize to
  783. 38:58anybody it would be the families have
  784. 39:00you ever done that I don't feel I have
  785. 39:02the right how do how do you you know
  786. 39:07you you get a me a letter in the mail
  787. 39:11from the person who killed your daughter
  788. 39:14right hey I'm
  789. 39:18sorry they may well be watching
  790. 39:21this those families I mean if you look
  791. 39:24at that camera
  792. 39:27if they are watching what what would you
  793. 39:28say to
  794. 39:32them I really don't know what to say
  795. 39:36truthfully I mean don't say it to me say
  796. 39:38say it to them what do you what do you
  797. 39:39say to somebody that you've murdered a
  798. 39:41member of the family right what I don't
  799. 39:44know isn't the very least you could say
  800. 39:48is I'm sorry isn't that the very least
  801. 39:51you could do is just to actually of
  802. 39:53course of course I'm
  803. 39:54sorry the fact we're having this
  804. 39:57conversation in this way yes I'm
  805. 40:04sorry here's an opportunity for you to
  806. 40:07speak to the families of these
  807. 40:10victims what would you say wh what's
  808. 40:13your response he doesn't say anything he
  809. 40:16just says what can I say uh you know I
  810. 40:20could say I'm sorry which isn't even
  811. 40:22saying I'm sorry he's basically saying
  812. 40:23that's what I could say but what does it
  813. 40:27mean the question is what can you say to
  814. 40:31the victim's families in other words
  815. 40:34make a connection here give us a small
  816. 40:38piece of your soul to the victim's
  817. 40:41family he couldn't do it because I don't
  818. 40:43think that he even has that
  819. 40:49capacity tville lost its innocence
  820. 40:52through the acts of we called him
  821. 40:54Bernard Eugene Giles we always used the
  822. 40:56three
  823. 40:58names we started looking at everyone in
  824. 41:01a suspicious
  825. 41:03Manner and we started locking our
  826. 41:08doors this
  827. 41:10guy lived in our area had been schooled
  828. 41:15in our
  829. 41:16area and he did such a horrible thing
  830. 41:20not once but many times from then on yes
  831. 41:24I knew what a serial killer was
  832. 41:28I'd probably like to sit down and talk
  833. 41:30to him you know and
  834. 41:32say where'd You Go why'd you do
  835. 41:36this he says it was just a compulsion
  836. 41:39that he had to kill yeah
  837. 41:46wow when you finish here with
  838. 41:49me you know I'll go back to my normal
  839. 41:52life and I'll you know I'll when I go
  840. 41:55back to my my hotel room this afternoon
  841. 41:57I I'll
  842. 41:59feel quite unsettled by this encounter
  843. 42:03when you go back to
  844. 42:04your cell later having talked about all
  845. 42:08this today with me will you have any
  846. 42:10feelings about it really
  847. 42:12probably and what are they likely to
  848. 42:17be I truthfully I have a great deal of
  849. 42:20respect for
  850. 42:21you and um it unsettles me just a little
  851. 42:25bit
  852. 42:26that you have such
  853. 42:28a monstrous view of
  854. 42:31me I have a complicated view of you
  855. 42:33because to me now if I didn't know what
  856. 42:36you'd done and we had a regular
  857. 42:38conversation about stuff going on in the
  858. 42:41news I would imagine we'd have a
  859. 42:43perfectly normal rational of course and
  860. 42:46probably quite interesting conversation
  861. 42:48but it's very very
  862. 42:49hard to get past what I know that you
  863. 42:52did to these girls I understand it's
  864. 42:55very hard I understand not to feel that
  865. 43:00sense of just utter revulsion yes sir
  866. 43:04and I understand that I understand all
  867. 43:05of
  868. 43:10that well thank you for the interview
  869. 43:12thank you
  870. 43:18[Music]
  871. 43:24sir well that was one of the most
  872. 43:26extraordinary encounters I probably ever
  873. 43:28had with anybody because on one level
  874. 43:32he's obviously self aware about what he
  875. 43:35did because he's just prepared to admit
  876. 43:40everything what he can't do is what I
  877. 43:43suspect the families of these victims
  878. 43:45really want him to do and let's explain
  879. 43:47it in a way that could bring any kind of
  880. 43:51closure to
  881. 43:53them I just feel in the end that that
  882. 43:56their loved ones these poor girls were
  883. 43:59just in the wrong place at the wrong
  884. 44:01time and met an unbeliev would be
  885. 44:04dangerous
  886. 44:05person and it's as simple as that and as
  887. 44:09heartbreaking as
  888. 44:12[Music]
  889. 44:25that
  890. 44:34[Music]
