PHP's scariest day ever — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This might go down as the scariest day
- 0:01in internet history. The NSA, the FBI,
- 0:04the EU, and even Japan's Prime Minister
- 0:06are telling governments to take their
- 0:07sites offline. Here's exactly what's
- 0:09going on. Back in August, a security
- 0:10firm called Qualys was using
- 0:11GPT-5.6-Soul
- 0:13to dig through PHP. If you don't know,
- 0:15PHP is the language behind 70% of
- 0:17websites. And they found a bug so bad
- 0:19that anyone could run their own code on
- 0:21your server without even logging in. The
- 0:23worst part, it had been sitting there
- 0:24for 14 years. Weeks later, OpenAI and
- 0:27Wiz, another firm, found the same bugs.
- 0:29And once they all saw how bad it was,
- 0:30they got to work. PHP started building a
- 0:32fix, and the plan was simple. Everyone
- 0:34keeps quiet until the patch was ready.
- 0:36Then, out of nowhere, someone posted
- 0:37about it. There was even a video of it
- 0:39hijacking WordPress and Magento servers.
- 0:41And the second the news was out,
- 0:42everyone jumped together. On one end,
- 0:43hackers started hammering websites. On
- 0:45the other, the NSA, the FBI, the UK, the
- 0:47EU, and even Japan's PM are all telling
- 0:49everyone to patch it right now or take
- 0:51their sites offline ASAP. So, now it's a
- 0:54race. Major sites are all going offline
- 0:56for emergency updates, including a bunch
- 0:58of government websites. Meanwhile,
- 0:59hackers are trying their best to exploit
- 1:01and get in first. What's worrying is
- 1:03that even though the patch is out, it
- 1:04only covers newer versions of PHP.
- 1:06Overall, this might go down in history
- 1:08as the moment that tells us that AI
- 1:10breaking the internet era has finally
- 1:12arrived, and there's no hiding it.
