- 0:00In the previous chapter,
- 0:02Paul was
- 0:04showing us
- 0:05that we've got to consider everything
- 0:07lost that is based in the power of the
- 0:10flesh
- 0:12in order to gain what is based in the
- 0:14power [music] of Jesus.
- 0:16His power by which he is able to subject
- 0:19all things to himself including our
- 0:21mortal [music]
- 0:22broken state.
- 0:24And we're either going to we're either
- 0:26going to seek the approval and
- 0:28citizenship that is from heaven [music]
- 0:30or we're going to seek the approval and
- 0:32citizenship that is earthly. And that
- 0:34may be the Jews or that may be the
- 0:35Romans or that may be your faith
- 0:37tradition, but anything that is in the
- 0:39flesh is going to ultimately become an
- 0:43enemy of the cross because the cross is
- 0:45inviting us into [music] a journey of
- 0:47true pilgrimage faith.
- 0:48Then he begins
- 0:50in the last chapter of Philippians,
- 0:52chapter 4, with this word, "Therefore,
- 0:54my beloved brethren."
- 0:56Therefore links everything he's about to
- 0:58say
- 1:00to what he just said, that Jesus is
- 1:02going to transform our mortal bodies
- 1:04through his power.
- 1:06Amen. And that's why the Holy Spirit,
- 1:09the baptism of the Holy Spirit such as
- 1:11at Pentecost, is the foretaste,
- 1:14it's the pledge and seal of what's
- 1:17coming. It's the deposit of eternal
- 1:19life.
- 1:20"Therefore, my beloved brethren,
- 1:23whom I long to see,
- 1:25my joy and crown,
- 1:28in this way stand firm in the Lord, my
- 1:31beloved." In what way?
- 1:34How What is the way?
- 1:36Join in following my example, he said,
- 1:39"and observing those who live by the
- 1:41same pattern. This is the way to stand
- 1:44firm in the Lord." "Therefore, my
- 1:46beloved brethren, whom I long to see, my
- 1:49joy and my crown, in this way of
- 1:53following examples, stand firm in the
- 1:56Lord, my beloved.
- 1:59I urge Euodia
- 2:02and I urge Syntyche
- 2:04to live in harmony in the Lord.
- 2:08So, these are two women who we know had
- 2:11helped him.
- 2:12They apparently
- 2:14are at odds with each other
- 2:16and they are eroding the unity that Paul
- 2:19wants in the church. Remember that from
- 2:21the first chapter on, he's telling them,
- 2:23"Have the same mind, have the same
- 2:25heart, be of the same spirit." In verse
- 2:27three, he begins to speak to who it is,
- 2:29the minister who he's writing the letter
- 2:31to. "Indeed, true companion, I ask you
- 2:34also to help these women who have shared
- 2:37my struggle in the cause of the gospel
- 2:40together with Clement also
- 2:42>> [music]
- 2:42>> and the rest of my fellow workers whose
- 2:45names are in the book of life."
- 2:47So, he's saying, "You need to stop your
- 2:49quarreling.
- 2:51You need to come back into harmony.
- 2:54Not unison. You each have something
- 2:56valid in your unique perspective, but it
- 2:59needs to be subjected to the Holy Spirit
- 3:01and it'll become a harmony." And he
- 3:03writes to the elder of the church, "Help
- 3:05them.
- 3:06Help them quit this nonsense and get
- 3:08back into harmony."
- 3:10"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I
- 3:14will say, rejoice."
- 3:17So, something about Paul's biggest
- 3:19burden here keeps coming through. You've
- 3:22lost your joy.
- 3:23You've lost your joy. And he's he's
- 3:25repeating it. He's told them in the
- 3:26previous chapter. It doesn't bother him
- 3:28to repeat it. Now, he's repeating it
- 3:30again. In one sentence, "Rejoice in the
- 3:33Lord always. Again, I will say,
- 3:35rejoice."
- 3:37And that word joy, it means to be glad.
- 3:40It means to give a greeting of joy.
- 3:45It means to make joyful.
- 3:47Means to rejoice, to be the verb of joy.
- 3:51Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say
- 3:54rejoice.
- 3:55Let your gentle spirit be known to all
- 3:58men.
- 4:00The Lord is near.
- 4:03He's not far away.
- 4:05He hasn't left you.
- 4:07You're not alone in the dark tunnel of
- 4:10your crisis. You can rejoice because the
- 4:13Lord is near. Doesn't that make you
- 4:15think of Psalms 23?
- 4:17Yea, though I walk through the valley of
- 4:19the shadow of death, I will fear no
- 4:21evil, for thou art with me.
- 4:24That's what Paul is saying. You can
- 4:25rejoice because the Lord is near.
- 4:28Be anxious for nothing.
- 4:31But in everything
- 4:34by prayer
- 4:36and supplication with Thanksgiving
- 4:39let your requests be made known to God.
- 4:43So, he's saying you need to let your
- 4:45requests be made known to God.
- 4:48But there is a very specific way to let
- 4:51your requests be known to God.
- 4:54First, by being anxious for nothing.
- 4:57Anxiety
- 5:00bottles up and screws the lid on your
- 5:02requests so that they don't get out of
- 5:04you and into the courts of heaven.
- 5:06But it is through Thanksgiving that we
- 5:08enter the courts
- 5:10of heaven. So, he says, be anxious for
- 5:12nothing, but in everything by prayer and
- 5:16supplication with Thanksgiving let your
- 5:19requests be known. So, we have several
- 5:22critical words.
- 5:24Anxious
- 5:26prayer
- 5:27supplication, Thanksgiving, requests.
- 5:32And
- 5:34how we get the requests is what he's
- 5:37solving. How we get the requests before
- 5:39God.
- 5:40If I want to get a request to Judah, I
- 5:44send it to him by means of a text
- 5:47message. That's how I get my request to
- 5:49Judah.
- 5:50I send a text. But how you get your need
- 5:53in front of God is in a very particular
- 5:56way. First, get rid of anxiety.
- 6:00Because your anxiety stops your prayers.
- 6:04Bottles up your prayers. Screws the lid
- 6:06on your prayers so they don't get up to
- 6:08heaven.
- 6:09Thanksgiving gets your prayers
- 6:11into the courts of the Most High. You
- 6:14enter his gates with thanksgiving and
- 6:15his courts with praise. So, he says, "No
- 6:19anxiety,
- 6:20but through prayer
- 6:22and supplication." Prayer is
- 6:24calling on his name, asking him for
- 6:26something. Supplication is begging, but
- 6:29he says begging with thanksgiving.
- 6:33>> [laughter]
- 6:34>> Telling him you're grateful. Telling him
- 6:36you trust him. Telling him his character
- 6:39is worthy.
- 6:40In that way, let your requests, your
- 6:43demands,
- 6:45be made known to God. The things you
- 6:48desperately need.
- 6:50That's how they get known to God.
- 6:53If you have anxiety, they don't get
- 6:54known to God.
- 6:58If you don't have thanksgiving,
- 7:01you've unplugged the phone from the AT&T
- 7:04server.
- 7:05Your thanksgiving is your cell reception
- 7:08that puts your prayer from you into the
- 7:10courts of heaven.
- 7:12And verse seven, "And the peace of God,
- 7:16which surpasses all comprehension,
- 7:20will guard your hearts and minds in
- 7:23Christ Jesus."
- 7:25If you don't just make demands,
- 7:28but you do them without anxiety and with
- 7:31prayer and with thanksgiving and with
- 7:33supplication,
- 7:34then the peace of God
- 7:37will be there for you. And what kind of
- 7:38peace is this? It's a peace that is not
- 7:42the product of what you understand,
- 7:46but is
- 7:47the
- 7:48power over what you understand. The
- 7:51peace of God does not come from better
- 7:53understanding.
- 7:56It surpasses understanding.
- 7:58Understanding says no peace.
- 8:00Understanding says freak out, be
- 8:02anxious. The peace of God says I am the
- 8:06guard over the heart and the mind
- 8:08because this person is in Christ and is
- 8:11knowing Christ, is in fellowship with
- 8:13Christ. So it says it the peace of God
- 8:16will guard your hearts and that means a
- 8:18soldier stationed as sentry over a
- 8:21doorway.
- 8:23The peace of God is a powerful
- 8:25authoritative soldier of God that says,
- 8:29"Uh-uh.
- 8:30No, we're not doing anxious today.
- 8:32We're not doing that. We're not doing
- 8:34comprehension today. We're not doing I
- 8:36can't trust because I don't understand.
- 8:38That's not what we're doing.
- 8:40We're going to let our hearts and minds,
- 8:42that means our emotions and our
- 8:44intellect, be guarded by the soldier of
- 8:47a chosen peace, a peace from God.
- 8:51Finally, brethren,
- 8:53whatever is true,
- 8:55whatever is honorable. Now this finally
- 8:56is going to show us how peace is the
- 8:58soldier. Finally, brethren, whatever is
- 9:01true, whatever is honorable,
- 9:04whatever is right,
- 9:06whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
- 9:10whatever is of good repute,
- 9:13if there is any excellence,
- 9:16and if anything worthy of praise,
- 9:21dwell on these things.
- 9:25Peace decides what you dwell on.
- 9:30The soldier of peace decides, "I can't
- 9:34dwell on that."
- 9:36That's ruminate. That's what that that
- 9:38that's what he's speaking of there.
- 9:41It's how you process what has happened.
- 9:43It's you your mental reckoning of what's
- 9:46going on.
- 9:48And he says, "I don't want you to dwell
- 9:51on or ruminate on anything if it does
- 9:54not fit these things." The word is most
- 9:57often translated as consider
- 9:59or think about again.
- 10:02What should you be ruminating on?
- 10:07Whatever is true,
- 10:09honorable, right,
- 10:11pure, lovely,
- 10:14of good repute.
- 10:16Don't even dwell on the bad stories.
- 10:19Don't even repeat them and rehearse them
- 10:21to yourself.
- 10:23Whatever is lovely.
- 10:26This is the word of God commanding you
- 10:29to ruminate on lovely.
- 10:35Of good repute, excellent, worthy of
- 10:38praise.
- 10:40He wants you to think about, consider,
- 10:43and take account
- 10:46of the things that are excellent.
- 10:50Come out of a service and talk about
- 10:52what you loved about it.
- 10:54Finish a day and talk about what went
- 10:56right.
- 10:58Finish a conversation and tell the
- 11:01highlights to your spouse or friends.
- 11:04Do not be the garbage disposal
- 11:08rumination station for everything bad
- 11:11that happens in the church.
- 11:14That
- 11:16would be making demands with anxiety
- 11:19without Thanksgiving.
- 11:21That
- 11:23would be refusing to let the peace of
- 11:26God guard your heart and mind.
- 11:32The things you have learned and received
- 11:35and heard and seen in me,
- 11:38practice these things,
- 11:41and the God of peace will be with you.
- 11:47Notice this, the things you have learned
- 11:50and received
- 11:52and heard
- 11:54and seen
- 11:56in me.
- 11:58Not in my letters, in me.
- 12:01In the way I treat people, in the way I
- 12:03talk, in the way I show, in the way I
- 12:05live.
- 12:06Practice these things. You're not
- 12:09perfect at it. I'm not either, Paul
- 12:10said. I haven't attained. I haven't been
- 12:12perfected, but you can practice. You can
- 12:15work at it. Practice these things,
- 12:18and the God of peace
- 12:21will be with you.
- 12:22And then you don't have to be anxious.
- 12:25So, he's given two powerful paths to
- 12:28success. Guard what you think about,
- 12:30guard what you ruminate on, and then
- 12:33focus on practicing
- 12:35what's right.
- 12:37If you do that,
- 12:39you're going to be all right.
- 12:42But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that
- 12:44now at least you have revived your
- 12:47concern for me.
- 12:50Indeed, you were concerned before, but
- 12:52you lacked opportunity.
- 12:56Not that I speak from want,
- 12:58for I
- 13:00have learned
- 13:02to be content
- 13:05in whatever circumstance
- 13:07I am in.
- 13:10I know how to get along with humble
- 13:12means,
- 13:13and I also know how to live in
- 13:15prosperity.
- 13:17In any and every circumstance, I have
- 13:20learned the secret of being filled and
- 13:24going hungry,
- 13:26both of having abundance and suffering
- 13:28need.
- 13:29I
- 13:30can do all things
- 13:33through him
- 13:35who strengthens me.
- 13:37This is the summation of the whole
- 13:38letter.
- 13:39He's saying, I've learned the secret.
- 13:41You can, too. And I just gave you the
- 13:43recipe for how.
- 13:45Focus on your thoughts and focus on your
- 13:47actions.
- 13:49And imitate people. Practice what you
- 13:51see in others that you want in you.
- 13:54I've learned the secret. You can learn
- 13:55it, too.
- 13:56And what is the secret? To live a life
- 13:59of faith that is not circumstantially
- 14:01dependent.
- 14:03I've learned the secret.
- 14:06When he says, I can do all things
- 14:07through him who strengthens me,
- 14:09what are the all things that he's
- 14:10talking about?
- 14:12I can live
- 14:14in poverty and I can live in prosperity.
- 14:17I can live in hunger and I can live in
- 14:19abundance. I can live with praise and I
- 14:21can live with slander. I can live with
- 14:24understanding and I can live with
- 14:25misunderstanding because I know how to
- 14:27dwell on the right things when my
- 14:29spirits are soaking wet.
- 14:31I know how to direct my mind to be
- 14:34soldiered and guarded by the peace of
- 14:37God that is bigger than my
- 14:39comprehension.
- 14:41Nevertheless, you have done well to
- 14:44share with me in my affliction. You
- 14:47yourselves also know, Philippians,
- 14:50that at the first preaching of the
- 14:52gospel after I left Macedonia, no church
- 14:56shared with me in the matter of giving
- 14:59and receiving,
- 15:01but you alone.
- 15:03For in Thessalonica, you sent a gift
- 15:07more than once for my needs.
- 15:10Not that I seek the gift itself, but I
- 15:13seek for the profit which increases to
- 15:17your account.
- 15:20They gave something
- 15:22and they got something.
- 15:24They gave they went and they gave a
- 15:26financial or practical gift to the
- 15:28ministry Paul was heading up and they
- 15:31got something. What did they get?
- 15:33Partnership in Paul's ministry. Because
- 15:35Jesus has said whoever gives a prophet a
- 15:38cup of cold water in my name receives
- 15:39the same reward as if he had prophesied
- 15:42as the prophet.
- 15:46But I have received everything in full
- 15:48and have an abundance.
- 15:50I am amply supplied
- 15:52having received from Epaphroditus
- 15:55what you have sent a fragrant aroma
- 15:59an acceptable sacrifice well pleasing to
- 16:02God.
- 16:04I don't know what in the name of God a
- 16:07church would want
- 16:10to hear
- 16:11except that what they gave
- 16:16was a fragrant aroma
- 16:18an acceptable sacrifice well pleasing to
- 16:21God.
- 16:23And my God
- 16:25my God
- 16:27will supply
- 16:29all your needs
- 16:31according to his riches in glory in
- 16:34Christ Jesus.
- 16:36He said you've given
- 16:37and God loves it. It's acceptable.
- 16:40And I want you to know you're you're not
- 16:41going to out give God. He's going to
- 16:43take care of everything you're facing
- 16:45because you have that sense of blessing.
- 16:50You're that willingness to give that
- 16:52sacrificial ethic is still in the
- 16:54Philippian church
- 16:55that apparently had been lost in the
- 16:57Galatian church.
- 16:59Now to our God and Father
- 17:02be the glory
- 17:03forever and ever. [music] Amen.
- 17:06Greet every saint in Christ Jesus.
- 17:10The brethren who are with me greet you.
- 17:13All the saints greet you
- 17:15especially those of Caesar's household.
- 17:18The grace of the [music] Lord Jesus
- 17:20Christ be with your spirit.
- 17:27God's going to supply all our needs
- 17:30if we'll let his peace
- 17:33take sentry post over our thoughts
- 17:37and our hearts, our feelings.
- 17:40If we'll direct our minds [music] to
- 17:42dwell as Paul has said and our actions
- 17:45to imitate as he has instructed.
- 17:48Amen. And he finishes by telling them
- 17:50that
- 17:50>> [music]
- 17:50>> those of Caesar's household greet them.
- 17:54What he's saying is he's saying, "You
- 17:56guys have invested in my ministry. I
- 17:58want you to know it's working."
- 18:01Those of Caesar's household greet you.
- 18:03He's imprisoned by Caesar's household,
- 18:05but they're being converted to Christ.
- 18:08What a letter.
- 18:12>> [music]
- 18:22[music]
