- 0:00was it always like that field was it
- 0:01always easy baseball was easy for you
- 0:02were you
- 0:03howard baseball wasn't easy did your dad
- 0:05make you practice a lot would you have
- 0:06one of those fathers that like just kind
- 0:08of beat it in well you got to remember
- 0:09now when i was growing up all we did was
- 0:11play sports
- 0:12we didn't have the things that kids said
- 0:13we didn't have computers and iphones and
- 0:15that kind of stuff were you pushed into
- 0:17it or you just loved it right away
- 0:18my father i was very lucky because my
- 0:20father was an athlete
- 0:21right and i was his bat boy for his
- 0:23baseball water boy for his football and
- 0:25ball boy for his basketball were you a
- 0:27natural
- 0:28no not at all you were not a natural a
- 0:30lot of guys were
- 0:31more ability than me but uh i had other
- 0:34god-given talents i believe like
- 0:36i had enthusiasm i still do i had a big
- 0:39heart
- 0:39i had worked where did they know when
- 0:41did they know you like like
- 0:42when mozart they did it because i was a
- 0:44better football player in high school
- 0:45when i was a baseball player then why
- 0:46would
- 0:46didn't you go into the football i don't
- 0:48like school my mistake
- 0:50and so instead of becoming a football
- 0:52player you become a baseball player
- 0:54because you didn't like school
- 0:55because i didn't want to go to college
- 0:56and play football the only reason i
- 0:58wanted to go right into the minor
- 0:59leagues and listen to this
- 1:01the only reason i got an opportunity
- 1:02because i had an uncle who was a scout
- 1:04for the reds
- 1:04did your father get to see you play yes
- 1:07did he was he so proud of you yes he got
- 1:09he got to see me play 63 through 70.
- 1:12okay you got to see me playing the world
- 1:13series you got to see me
- 1:14uh when i had the collision home plate
- 1:16in a 70 all-star game
- 1:18i've never played hardball in my life i
- 1:19was afraid the ball come to me and i'd
- 1:20miss it
- 1:21but you had none of those fears in other
- 1:22words you were natural you were relaxed
- 1:25right
- 1:26that ball would come to you you didn't
- 1:27panic am i correct
- 1:29it's just like you don't panic with that
- 1:31microphone in front of you
- 1:33talking i'm fine oh you're great you're
- 1:35the best coordination is a little off
- 1:37well you know another thing i was always
- 1:40very fortunate i always had great
- 1:42teammates
- 1:43well come on i did i had great i i was
- 1:45surrounded by hall of famers
- 1:47do you think it's ever going to happen
- 1:48that you're in the hall of fame do you
- 1:48think they'll ever forget well you just
- 1:50i don't know i i don't you just have to
- 1:52believe we live in america
- 1:54and then americans are given second
- 1:55chances but do you think there could be
- 1:57a second trade do you think you could
- 1:58get in
- 1:59i would think i deserve one because i'm
- 2:01the most positive guy there is in this
- 2:03country about baseball
- 2:04and you know baseball is easy to bash
- 2:06today as you know
