  1. 0:00all the way out to Las Vegas to bring in
  2. 0:02Pete Rose yes he joins us on the MSG 150
  3. 0:05speed dial presented by files by Verizon
  4. 0:07Pete thanks so much for joining us you
  5. 0:09have a new book out it's called play
  6. 0:10hungry the making of a baseball player
  7. 0:13tell us about the book and the
  8. 0:15motivation for doing the book well I
  9. 0:19think you know I'm getting up there in
  10. 0:22years now and I never really had a
  11. 0:24situation where I really talked about my
  12. 0:26dad the way I should have and I was a
  13. 0:29baseball player because the way he
  14. 0:32brought me up and I was very fortunate
  15. 0:34because he was a baseball player a
  16. 0:36basketball player and a football player
  17. 0:38and probably the best football player
  18. 0:39having to come out of Cincinnati and I'm
  19. 0:41just I'm just my dad and next generation
  20. 0:44was a bigger and better opportunity and
  21. 0:46I think we're getting away from that
  22. 0:48today with dads and sons and dads and
  23. 0:51daughters of relationship and I just
  24. 0:52want or I hope everybody could have
  25. 0:55relationship with their dad that I had
  26. 0:57with my dad and when you read the book
  27. 0:58you'll understand why I played the game
  28. 1:01the way I played the game and I believe
  29. 1:04I've heard you tell this story before I
  30. 1:06think it's also in the book about if
  31. 1:08your dad had been around when you were
  32. 1:10gambling yeah that things would have
  33. 1:12been much different for you tell that
  34. 1:14story please it might it might it might
  35. 1:16have been it might have been different
  36. 1:18but don't forget I don't know it why no
  37. 1:22nobody in the clubhouse knew I was
  38. 1:24gambling when I was gambling so the
  39. 1:26other way my dad would have knew is if I
  40. 1:28had told him okay what I mean by that no
  41. 1:30players no coaches no clubhouse guys
  42. 1:32that nobody knew that when I was
  43. 1:35gambling I was gambling it and but my
  44. 1:37dad would have been here and he knew I
  45. 1:38was gambling he to probably put a halt
  46. 1:40to it because I had he's the only guy in
  47. 1:43the world I ever idolized and I met
  48. 1:45seven presidents but my father is doing
  49. 1:47one I ever idolized he where did things
  50. 1:50stand in your estimation with the Hall
  51. 1:51of Fame right now everybody
  52. 1:55they don't stand and I'm not worried
  53. 1:58about that I mean if I ever had the
  54. 2:01honor of one in Hall Fame I'd be the
  55. 2:02happiest guy in the world but I'm not
  56. 2:04going to live the rest of my life
  57. 2:06worrying about going to the Hall of Fame
  58. 2:08my family knows what kind of player I
  59. 2:10was my fans know what kind of player was
  60. 2:12my teammates know what kind of player
  61. 2:14was and I'm the one that screwed that up
  62. 2:16so I'm not going to get on your show and
  63. 2:18complain about that I don't think
  64. 2:20there's any way in the world
  65. 2:21then I'll ever go to the Baseball Hall
  66. 2:23of Fame I went to the Baseball Hall of
  67. 2:25Fame in Cincinnati I got my number
  68. 2:27retired in Cincinnati I got a statue in
  69. 2:29Cincinnati and don't forget guys that's
  70. 2:31where I was born so that means so much
  71. 2:34to me to be I have those three things
  72. 2:36happen to me in Cincinnati but I can't
  73. 2:38live the rest of my life worrying about
  74. 2:40going to Cooperstown if it ever opens up
  75. 2:43I'd be the happiest guy in the world but
  76. 2:45when you screw up you can't complain
  77. 2:47about something that's because it's not
  78. 2:49their fault it was my fault although I
  79. 2:51would like to have a second chance
  80. 2:53something I have not been able to get so
  81. 2:55far but dumb only 78 so maybe it's
  82. 2:58around the corner plenty of time for
  83. 3:00sure then and we see how many people
  84. 3:02still turn out to see ya to get
  85. 3:04autographs to to meet you it shows that
  86. 3:07many people still remember the way you
  87. 3:09played how hard you played the Charlie
  88. 3:11hustle nickname of course and I have to
  89. 3:13ask today's game the analytics could
  90. 3:17Charlie hustle playing with analytics in
  91. 3:20the today's era because of the way they
  92. 3:21make you play now where it seems like
  93. 3:23hustling is almost the note we'd rather
  94. 3:25you strike no I don't know I don't think
  95. 3:27they know no no no no no no I I don't
  96. 3:30think they make you play a certain way
  97. 3:32and there again could you name me a team
  98. 3:34that was strictly analytics it's won the
  99. 3:36World Series in the last five or six
  100. 3:38years here's the way you win a World
  101. 3:41Series you pitch you hit you it with men
  102. 3:43on base I don't care if you strike out
  103. 3:46that's that velocity today how many home
  104. 3:48runs can I hit okay that's up strikeouts
  105. 3:51are up and more importantly and the
  106. 3:54Commissioner should think about this
  107. 3:56attendance is down mm-hmm okay
  108. 3:59attendance is down in baseball a tendon
  109. 4:01is not down in basketball it's not down
  110. 4:04in football it's certainly not down in
  111. 4:06hockey
  112. 4:06so baseball has some concern
  113. 4:08that they have to take care of and I
  114. 4:10don't like the way the game is played
  115. 4:11today but it's not the players fault the
  116. 4:14players they go to the ball parks and
  117. 4:16the ball parks are banned boxes in the
  118. 4:18ball juice they play with what they give
  119. 4:20them to play with and don't tell me the
  120. 4:22ball it's not use there's too many home
  121. 4:24right everybody plays baseball today
  122. 4:25it's potentially a home run hitter not
  123. 4:28forty fifty but I guarantee everybody on
  124. 4:30every roster today has at least one home
  125. 4:32run and it's going to have more and more
  126. 4:34and more and you know I never thought
  127. 4:37I'd get on the show and defend pitchers
  128. 4:39you can't pitch in Cincinnati you can't
  129. 4:41pitch him in the Camden Yards you can't
  130. 4:43pitch in Colorado you can't pitch in
  131. 4:45Philadelphia you can't pitch in Colorado
  132. 4:47you can't pitch in the new ballpark una
  133. 4:50in Atlanta you know there's so many
  134. 4:52bandboxes in baseball Houston is a joke
  135. 4:55if you ever did an appearance there and
  136. 4:57you stood at home plate you say why is
  137. 4:58those fences so close you know to where
  138. 5:01the fielder plays it's just not fair to
  139. 5:03pitchers but that's what baseball wants
  140. 5:05and that's what they got I imagine you
  141. 5:07wonder how many home runs could you hit
  142. 5:08today because you know you watch you
  143. 5:11watch the way the games played and you
  144. 5:13ask yourself you know what players would
  145. 5:15be transcended which players could have
  146. 5:17played in another era
  147. 5:18is there someone you watch today and say
  148. 5:20well that's that's a guy when he plays
  149. 5:23the play listen I was over I was over in
  150. 5:27New York last week and did everything
  151. 5:29all the main shows Fran says son Kay and
  152. 5:32and mad dog and and and the rest of him
  153. 5:35I'm Fox and and I even had one guy I've
  154. 5:37got it was he said well Mickey Mantle
  155. 5:39and Willie Mays a hank Aaron couldn't
  156. 5:41play today what the hell were they
  157. 5:43talking about those guys couldn't play
  158. 5:45baseball today maybe the guys today
  159. 5:47couldn't play back in the 60s and set up
  160. 5:49if you can play baseball you can play
  161. 5:52today yeah you could play today it's
  162. 5:54just I'm not gonna drop my back shoulder
  163. 5:57and try to hit a fly ball I'm gonna hit
  164. 5:58a try try to hit a line drive you know I
  165. 6:01don't care how far a home run goes if
  166. 6:03you have a 330 foot fence you hit at 331
  167. 6:07feet you get an RBI you don't get two
  168. 6:09RBIs you hit 440 feet and everybody on
  169. 6:12TV today oh that one went 460 that one
  170. 6:16went 430 so what who cares how far it
  171. 6:19goes just get it over the fence
  172. 6:21mine drives me out of the ballpark - I
  173. 6:23know a guy hits 755 home runs and never
  174. 6:26hit a tape-measure home run his name was
  175. 6:29Henry Aaron he hit line drive home run
  176. 6:31755 of them okay Barry Bonds wasn't a
  177. 6:35tape-measure type guy he hit more homers
  178. 6:37than Hank did Willie Mays hit 660 you
  179. 6:41know I watched these guys played their
  180. 6:42whole careers I don't remember a time
  181. 6:44hitting opposite field home runs every
  182. 6:46night I watched replays theirs opposite
  183. 6:48field home runs and every game is played
  184. 6:50in baseball today are they that much
  185. 6:53stronger than we were I don't know how
  186. 6:55much stronger they could be than Willie
  187. 6:56McCovey Pete what Willie Mays was 100
