- 0:00Hello, my name is Mark. My topic for
- 0:02today is about AI and plagiarism.
- 0:06According to the Harvard undergraduate
- 0:08series on generative AI, the study shows
- 0:10that about 90% of students use
- 0:13generative AI and about 25% students use
- 0:17AI to substitute for attending office
- 0:19hours and complete required reading.
- 0:22Imagine you are an educator and your
- 0:24student turning in AI-generated homework
- 0:26without using their knowledge or skill.
- 0:29As AI develop faster today, this is the
- 0:32problem that all educators have to face.
- 0:34So, in this video, I'm going to talk
- 0:36about why the school should ban student
- 0:38from using AI in their homework and how
- 0:40we can prevent student to use AI in
- 0:42their homework.
- 0:44Here's the overview of my main point.
- 0:46First, I'm going to talk about why it is
- 0:48important to complete assignment
- 0:49independently and what is AI, how
- 0:52student use AI to their to to you to do
- 0:55their homework. And the second main
- 0:56point is is the negative impact of
- 0:58allowing student to use AI.
- 0:59The negative impact of allowing student
- 1:01to use AI. And the third main point is
- 1:03how to efficiently prevent student from
- 1:05using AI in their homework.
- 1:07In this section, I'm going to share some
- 1:08important information and concept.
- 1:11Why is it important to complete
- 1:12assignment independently? According to
- 1:14"How Our Critical Thinking Skill Relate
- 1:16to Student Self-Regulation and
- 1:17Independent Learning" in 2023, the
- 1:20author mentioned that complete
- 1:22assignment independently allows student
- 1:24to develop critical thinking skill. This
- 1:26is because students would use their own
- 1:28knowledge to
- 1:29judge the questions when doing homework
- 1:31independently.
- 1:33What is AI? According to the website
- 1:35from NASA 2020, AI refer to artificial
- 1:39intelligence. It allow computer to
- 1:40perform complex tasks normally done by
- 1:42human learning, decision-making,
- 1:44creating, etc.
- 1:47How student use AI for their homework?
- 1:49Most students use AI by a low upload the
- 1:53content from their homework and adding
- 1:54the prompt. The AI will quickly generate
- 1:57the answer within a few seconds. So, in
- 2:00this process, the
- 2:02the student don't have to think about
- 2:03their homework.
- 2:05AI will bring negative impact for
- 2:06student. So, we should ban student from
- 2:08using AI in their homework.
- 2:11The first impact is AI will affect
- 2:13student critical thinking. According to
- 2:15the
- 2:16cognitive
- 2:17offloading knowledge in 2025 mentioned
- 2:20that there is a negative correlation
- 2:22between the frequent use of AI tools and
- 2:25and our critical thinking ability.
- 2:27Compared to the older participant,
- 2:29younger participants who are more
- 2:30reliant on AI tools score lower in AI in
- 2:34critical thinking skill.
- 2:37The third impact is uh the AI will
- 2:39affect student student cognitive
- 2:41thinking. According to the AI tool in
- 2:43society Nisco in 2016 mentioned that the
- 2:45long-term rely on reliance on technology
- 2:48to complete task could lead to cognitive
- 2:50skill decay.
- 2:52Moreover, AI generated homeworks make it
- 2:54difficult for teacher to actually
- 2:56evaluate student's knowledge. According
- 2:58to the academic integrity in 2023, the
- 3:01author mentioned that the traditional
- 3:03homework assessment methods may not
- 3:05longer accurately measure the student
- 3:07ability. This is because
- 3:10the AI generates its homework come from
- 3:12idea and ability from AI. It It cannot
- 3:15accurately reflect the student's
- 3:17knowledge and it will make teacher
- 3:20become harder to
- 3:22to um
- 3:23to evaluate the student understandings
- 3:25of the course.
- 3:27And then the the next the the the third
- 3:31uh impact is AI will increase academic
- 3:33dishonesty. According to uh academic
- 3:36integrity, the author in 2023 the author
- 3:39mentioned that AI generated contents may
- 3:41not be detectable by traditional
- 3:43plagiarism uh detection tool. This will
- 3:46result in an increase in the plagiarism.
- 3:49In this section, I'm going to share some
- 3:51solutions for preventing students using
- 3:53AI in their homework.
- 3:54The first solution is redesign the
- 3:56assign- the assignment. According to
- 3:57Redefining Student Assessments in
- 3:59AI-infused learning environment in 2025,
- 4:02the author mentioned that the school
- 4:04should redesign the assignment to
- 4:05prevent AI use in class. For example,
- 4:08the teacher can increase the amount of
- 4:10in-class assignment or in-class quiz and
- 4:12decrease the amounts of take-home
- 4:16exam or take-home assignment.
- 4:18The second solution is using AI tool to
- 4:21check our students' homework. Um some AI
- 4:24language model prefers use the same
- 4:27sentence structure or word. So, AI
- 4:30detection tool sometimes can efficiently
- 4:32check whether the student used the AI in
- 4:35homework or not.
- 4:37The third method is collecting writing
- 4:38sample. So, uh the the the the the
- 4:41teacher can collecting writing sample in
- 4:43class and compare them to to the
- 4:46students' take-home assignment to find
- 4:48out whether they use AI or not. In
- 4:50conclusion, school should ban students
- 4:52using AI in their homework because it
- 4:54affect students' critical thinking,
- 4:57cognitive skills, and increase
- 4:58plagiarism. To solve this problem,
- 5:01school can use AI detector, collecting
- 5:04writing sample, and um
- 5:06decrease the amount of take-home
- 5:08assignment to prevent students using AI.
- 5:12That's all I want to share today. Thanks
- 5:13for watching.
