Personal Virtues — Transcript

- 0:00Hello, my name is Trinity Winfield and I
- 0:03want to share with you my take on
- 0:04personal virtues and how they will play
- 0:06a part in my future classroom.
- 0:08I will walk through the definition of
- 0:10virtues, character formation, and IMO
- 0:12day and how they not only shape who I am
- 0:14as a person and educator, but how
- 0:16they'll shape the environment and
- 0:18structure of my future classroom.
- 0:21GCU shares four categories of virtues,
- 0:23breaking them down into intellectual,
- 0:26moral, civic, and performance. sharing
- 0:28how each category plays a role in the
- 0:30development of creating an environment
- 0:32that promotes human flourishing. Virtues
- 0:35work together to support individuals
- 0:36life, helping them grow and thrive.
- 0:40Four virtues that shape my personal life
- 0:41include service, adaptability, quick
- 0:44thinking, creativity, and compassion. On
- 0:46the slide, I placed a picture of my
- 0:48younger self alongside me with my last
- 0:50kindergarten class. And every day when I
- 0:52would walk into the classroom, I would
- 0:54try to remind myself that I was five and
- 0:56six once that I it was my first year in
- 1:00school, first year in kindergarten once.
- 1:02Um, and my virtues honestly just come
- 1:04from remembering that I I have filled
- 1:07these shoes already and what can I do
- 1:09now as an adult to help kids who are now
- 1:12at this age and how can I support them?
- 1:16How can I walk them through big
- 1:18emotions? Like what kind of adult did I
- 1:20need growing up? And then I just want to
- 1:22be a reflection of that. And then in
- 1:26Christianity we are called to serve. Uh
- 1:29teaching is a gift. It is a gift of
- 1:31service. And Jesus was a great example
- 1:33of that. Um scripture says in Matthew
- 1:3719, let the children come to me and do
- 1:39not hinder them for the kingdom of God
- 1:41belongs to such as these. And I think
- 1:43it's important that teachers carry the
- 1:45same attitude and they can do that by
- 1:47having virtues of integrity, reflection,
- 1:50organization and advocacy. Above I have
- 1:53this quote that says we have the
- 1:55intuition that we should be
- 1:56independently motivated to behave
- 1:58morally. Reputational concern should not
- 2:01be the main drive. And that is why I
- 2:03listed integrity as a crucial virtue for
- 2:06educators. Educators should be models of
- 2:09honesty and fairness, not because it's
- 2:11required, but in their hearts, they
- 2:14should be internally motivated to do
- 2:16what is right, whether they're being
- 2:18watched or not. I also think that
- 2:20teachers should be reflective.
- 2:23Every group of students is different and
- 2:24students even change as the years
- 2:27continue to grow on. So, they should
- 2:30constantly be reflecting on strategies
- 2:32that are working and the ones that are
- 2:34not. Um, reflecting helps prepare to
- 2:37make changes where change is needed.
- 2:41And then for organization and advocacy,
- 2:43not all teachers need to be type A super
- 2:46organized, but they should have some
- 2:48sort of system to create the proper
- 2:50structure and environment that children
- 2:53need to thrive on. And then for
- 2:54advocacy, teachers should be ready to
- 2:56step up and speak up for what is right
- 2:58and wrong to help support their
- 3:00students, especially for those who
- 3:02can't. like they're non-verbal or
- 3:04they're just younger and don't know that
- 3:07something is being done wrong.
- 3:11How my virtues will help aid in the
- 3:14creation um of my classroom.
- 3:17Having a serving attitude helps me shift
- 3:20my approach and place my students and
- 3:22their needs at the center of each day.
- 3:25Um, every day when I walk into the
- 3:27class, I should be thinking how can I
- 3:30serve them and what do my students need
- 3:32from me, not what can I get from them.
- 3:37Um, I've had students who were abused in
- 3:41all different kinds of ways or even
- 3:43students who have gained a younger
- 3:45sibling. So, coming into the day knowing
- 3:47that my students were going to need my
- 3:51attention helped me better serve them.
- 3:54Um, and for creativity, I teach
- 3:57kindergarteners and honestly being
- 3:59around them has helped me fit into their
- 4:02shoes once again and just from a
- 4:04different perspective. Um, a lot of
- 4:06times I would be preparing lessons or in
- 4:08the middle of a lesson and thinking to
- 4:09myself that
- 4:12this is boring. So, it's my job to use
- 4:14creativity to keep them engaged because
- 4:17at the end of the day, they're just
- 4:19babies and their attention spans are not
- 4:22that long. So, I need to use my
- 4:24creativity to make learning fun and keep
- 4:26them engaged in school. For compassion,
- 4:31I just strive to be the adult that I
- 4:32needed when I was younger, remembering
- 4:34at the end of the day that they've only
- 4:36been alive for about 5 years, which is
- 4:39not that long. Um, they can learn a lot
- 4:41in 5 years, but not that much. They are
- 4:45just babies and every day will look
- 4:47different and no one is perfect. And
- 4:49adaptability also kind of goes into that
- 4:51because like I stated before, sometimes
- 4:54lessons are boring or my kids are just
- 4:56not getting it and I need to be ready to
- 4:59jump in and make a change where that is
- 5:01needed.
- 5:04Virtue alignment with IMO day. The
- 5:06virtues of integrity, reflection,
- 5:09organization, advocacy all play a part
- 5:11in honoring and valuing the fact that
- 5:13every child was made in the image of
- 5:15God.
- 5:17Educators have the trait of integrity
- 5:19will help them honor students divine
- 5:21worth and the way we treat them.
- 5:25Reflection will help us examine our own
- 5:27actions and attitudes, ensuring we are
- 5:29lifting up every single student and not
- 5:32diminishing or belittling them,
- 5:35put aside any biases or stereotypes that
- 5:39we may have. Um, organization supports
- 5:42structure, not only for the physical
- 5:44classroom needs, but what students need
- 5:47to thrive. Um, organization isn't just
- 5:50having cubbies and all type of things,
- 5:53but the way a day is structured, it
- 5:55should flow well and should be
- 5:58organized.
- 5:59Advocacy helps us stand up for students
- 6:02and protect them.
- 6:05Here I have some scriptures that align
- 6:07with these virtues. I just want to point
- 6:09out Psalms 19 and Proverbs 22, uh,
- 6:13scripture says in Psalms 19:14, "May the
- 6:16words of my mouth and meditation of my
- 6:18heart be accepted to you, Lord, my rock
- 6:21and my redeemer."
- 6:24This scripture just can fall under
- 6:27reflection and integrity. Uh, the Holy
- 6:30Spirit is with us in all that we do and
- 6:32we should be doing right by God. Not
- 6:34just because he sees us all the time,
- 6:36but what we do is a reflection of not
- 6:39only our character, but his character as
- 6:41well. And then Proverbs 22:6 that says,
- 6:44"Start off children the way they should
- 6:46go. Even when they were old, they will
- 6:48not depart from it." And I love that the
- 6:52scripture is not only just for parents,
- 6:54but for me as a teacher. As a
- 6:56kindergarten teacher, I may be a child's
- 6:59first school teacher, and it is my job
- 7:02to guide them and show my commitment to
- 7:05their long-term well-being.
- 7:08uh defining character formation
- 7:10referencing back to Proverbs 6, Proverbs
- 7:1322 verse 6. I want my students to learn
- 7:16good virtues and that and they will
- 7:19learn this not only from my lessons but
- 7:21what I am doing to model that creating
- 7:23the proper environment where my students
- 7:25can learn virtues of service,
- 7:27organization, creativity and compassion
- 7:30on their own through times of helping
- 7:32each other, class jobs, morning
- 7:35meetings, clear routines, structure and
- 7:38other classroom strategies.
- 7:43Um, and lastly, for their character
- 7:45development, I learn something new from
- 7:48my students every single day. Taking
- 7:52time to reflect on not only their
- 7:55growth, but mine will help strengthen my
- 7:58development as a teacher. Um, I am
- 8:01already so big on journaling, and I love
- 8:04to just look back and see how far I've
- 8:07grown. to doing this um in my teaching
- 8:11will help me learn from not even past
- 8:13mistakes but just learn from the past
- 8:15and see how I have grown from maybe my
- 8:18first year to my second year my first
- 8:21year to my fifth year.
- 8:24Um educational trainings will teach me
- 8:26new strategies and approaches to
- 8:28teaching. And then lastly, staying
- 8:30connected in my faith will help me grow
- 8:32better as a person, becoming more like
- 8:35Christ every single day, and devotionals
- 8:37that are dedicated for educators will
- 8:40help me not only reflect on my career,
- 8:42but just see it through a spiritual
- 8:44lens.
- 8:45So that is all I have for you. Thank you
- 8:48so much for listening and watching my
- 8:50video.
- 8:51Puppy.
