  1. 0:03the Feast of Pentecost has always been
  2. 0:05one of my favorite feast days of the
  3. 0:08year it is today is the
  4. 0:12final day of the Easter season tomorrow
  5. 0:16we return back to ordinary
  6. 0:20time last weekend many of you gave me
  7. 0:22feedback on how much the homy helped you
  8. 0:26and how much you enjoyed the story of
  9. 0:28Pini well I thought this weekend I'd go
  10. 0:31about the same
  11. 0:33route I have a story for you about Pablo
  12. 0:38Casal the great chist composer and
  13. 0:45conductor in the last years of his life
  14. 0:47he suffered greatly from rheumatoid
  15. 0:50arthritis and from
  16. 0:52enyma at age 90 he was badly stooped
  17. 0:58over and his head pitched forward his
  18. 1:00breathing was
  19. 1:02labored he needed the help of his wife
  20. 1:06Marta Marta to get dressed in the
  21. 1:08morning and to move
  22. 1:11about Marta would then help him Shuffle
  23. 1:15into his Studio where he would with
  24. 1:17great difficulty arrange himself behind
  25. 1:21the piano
  26. 1:22[Music]
  27. 1:23bench Cal would then manage to raise his
  28. 1:26swollen clenched fingers above on the
  29. 1:31keyboard a visitor describes what he saw
  30. 1:35next on a particular
  31. 1:38morning I was not prepared for the
  32. 1:40miracle that was about to
  33. 1:43happen the finger slowly unlocked and
  34. 1:46reached towards the keys like the buds
  35. 1:49of a plant towards the
  36. 1:52sunlight his back
  37. 1:54straightened he seemed to breathe more
  38. 1:57freely now his finger settled on the
  39. 2:01keys then came the opening bars of box
  40. 2:05Das vtin
  41. 2:08clavia played with great sensitivity and
  42. 2:13control he hummed as he played and then
  43. 2:15he said boach spoke to him
  44. 2:19there and he placed his hand over his
  45. 2:23heart then he plunged into brum's conero
  46. 2:26with his fingers now agile and Powerful
  47. 2:29racing across the keyboards with
  48. 2:32dazzling speed his entire body seemed to
  49. 2:35fuse with the music it was no longer
  50. 2:38stiff and shaken but s Supple and
  51. 2:42graceful and completely freed of his
  52. 2:45arthritic
  53. 2:48coils having finished the piece he stood
  54. 2:50up for him by himself far straighter and
  55. 2:54taller than when he had first come into
  56. 2:57the room he walked to the breakfast
  57. 3:00table with no trace of a
  58. 3:02shuffle ate heartily talk animely
  59. 3:07finished his meal and then went for a
  60. 3:09walk on the
  61. 3:13beach Pentecost is the birthday of the
  62. 3:19church on that day the father and the
  63. 3:22son poured out the gift of the Holy
  64. 3:24Spirit upon the
  65. 3:27apostles transforming them from cowering
  66. 3:31cowardly men into bold and courageous
  67. 3:35Proclaimers of the
  68. 3:37gospels within a generation from the day
  69. 3:40of Pentecost the apostles carried the
  70. 3:42faith as far as India to the east the
  71. 3:46Apostle as far as Spain to the west and
  72. 3:50everywhere in
  73. 3:53between it's that transformation that's
  74. 3:56most
  75. 3:58compelling we need a ask ourselves what
  76. 4:01changed those
  77. 4:03men what inspired
  78. 4:06them how could they go from one day
  79. 4:09hiding from the Jews behind locked
  80. 4:13doors to the next day openly proclaiming
  81. 4:17the good news of Jesus Christ crucified
  82. 4:19and risen what happened to
  83. 4:23them well the answer is simple the gift
  84. 4:27of the Holy Spirit
  85. 4:30also what was it about the Christian
  86. 4:33Proclamation the faith that they were
  87. 4:34proclaiming that was so compelling
  88. 4:38anyway how quickly the faith spread and
  89. 4:41grew all through the Easter season we've
  90. 4:43been reading from The Acts of the
  91. 4:45Apostles we've see how the church
  92. 4:51grew on that first Pentecost Sunday all
  93. 4:54the followers of Jesus could easily fit
  94. 4:57here in this church
  95. 5:01within a
  96. 5:03generation there were tens of thousands
  97. 5:06of
  98. 5:07Believers and today we cover the entire
  99. 5:11Globe it's amazing to
  100. 5:15contemplate on the natural level the
  101. 5:17Christian faith doesn't offer much of
  102. 5:20anything Jesus Promised his followers
  103. 5:23nothing on
  104. 5:25Earth in fact he told them that they
  105. 5:27would have to take up their crosses
  106. 5:29every day in order to be his
  107. 5:32disciple that they would be hated and
  108. 5:34persecuted as he
  109. 5:37was that they would have to strictly
  110. 5:40govern their natural impulses for
  111. 5:42possessions pleasure power and
  112. 5:47self-indulgence on the contrary his
  113. 5:49followers have to daily die to
  114. 5:52themselves to forget themselves and
  115. 5:54serve others
  116. 5:57generously they could not indulge in
  117. 6:00hatred and revenge but instead had to
  118. 6:02practice love and forgiveness even
  119. 6:05towards enemies and many other
  120. 6:10things though the pl that though the
  121. 6:13path laid out by Christ leads to
  122. 6:16Everlasting Bliss in heaven we know this
  123. 6:19while on Earth he described the path as
  124. 6:22narrow Steep and
  125. 6:25difficult so on the natural level it
  126. 6:28boggles the mind that our faith ever got
  127. 6:30off the ground that it spread Beyond
  128. 6:35Jerusalem there's a story of a famous
  129. 6:37writer he gives he says that there was a
  130. 6:40man who sat in the Town Square in
  131. 6:42meditation and contemplation looking up
  132. 6:45to the
  133. 6:47heavens after about an hour a few people
  134. 6:49came and joined him and were there in
  135. 6:53contemplation and meditation looking up
  136. 6:55at the
  137. 6:58stars but after a couple hours almost
  138. 7:01all of them left the man was there
  139. 7:05alone the man of the story got up and
  140. 7:08said man it's easy to start a religion
  141. 7:12to maintain it it's a different
  142. 7:16story the explanation for why our faith
  143. 7:19has
  144. 7:21survived is because of the Holy
  145. 7:25Spirit it wasn't it was God himself who
  146. 7:28came with his gifts and provided the
  147. 7:30impetus for the work of spreading the
  148. 7:33gospel and making Jesus Christ known
  149. 7:35loved and
  150. 7:37served that good work continues to this
  151. 7:42day on this Feast of Pentecost we pray
  152. 7:45for ourselves and for our parish for a
  153. 7:49renewed outpouring of that same Holy
  154. 7:52Spirit upon
  155. 7:54us from scripture the church has
  156. 7:56discerned Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
  157. 7:59seven gifts by which the Spirit guides
  158. 8:02us through life to the joys of Life to
  159. 8:06Come those gifts are wisdom
  160. 8:09understanding counsel fortitude
  161. 8:13knowledge piety and fear of the
  162. 8:17Lord these are Supernatural
  163. 8:20gifts far beyond anything we could
  164. 8:22attain naturally from our own
  165. 8:26efforts while we pray for them all today
  166. 8:29maybe there's one in
  167. 8:32particular you want to ask the holy
  168. 8:35spirit
  169. 8:38for those are the gifts of the Holy
  170. 8:40Spirit the gifts granted to the apostles
  171. 8:42on the day of Pentecost and the gifts we
  172. 8:45might we pray might be renewed in each
  173. 8:48and every one of us
  174. 8:52today none of us wants to be ashamed of
  175. 8:55our faith or to be fearful of making our
  176. 8:58faith known known because none of us is
  177. 9:01called to a mediocre
  178. 9:04Faith deep down I believe this firmly
  179. 9:07each one of us wants to have the faith
  180. 9:09of
  181. 9:11saints to have that faith we need the
  182. 9:14gifts of the holy
  183. 9:16spirit or we'll never get off the ground
  184. 9:22spiritually we pray the Lord enlarge our
  185. 9:25desire for his gifts that he enlarge our
  186. 9:29capacity to receive
  187. 9:32them so back to the story of our chalis
  188. 9:35composer and
  189. 9:37conductor for Cal's Beauty was the
  190. 9:40Divine
  191. 9:42incarnate our capacity to create Beauty
  192. 9:45a manifestation of the divine within and
  193. 9:48its perception a sacred
  194. 9:51experience Supreme among forms of Beauty
  195. 9:55for Casal was sound any sound whether na
  196. 10:00Nature's wind waves or man's especially
  197. 10:05music he was often quoted by saying I
  198. 10:09find God in
  199. 10:11music what is music God is
  200. 10:15music creating performing or listening
  201. 10:18to music was a spiritual act commission
  202. 10:22communion with God through our own
  203. 10:24Divine
  204. 10:25gifts music has the power to inspire and
  205. 10:29to Exhilarate us all like it did Paul
  206. 10:33Cal but you see the spirit of God is the
  207. 10:36melody that energizes the church and
  208. 10:40ourselves uniting our many different
  209. 10:43voices and talents into a song of love
  210. 10:46for
  211. 10:47God so my brothers and sisters on this
  212. 10:50Pentecost Sunday we pray that God may
  213. 10:53bring about in us that same
  214. 10:55understanding of his spirit that same
  215. 10:58trans transformation that same
  216. 11:01inspiration that he gave to the apostles
  217. 11:04on that first Pentecost Sunday we can
  218. 11:07experience the same thing we need to ask
  219. 11:11for
  220. 11:12it and in his
  221. 11:15grace with those gifts he can make us
  222. 11:19faithful and courageous disciples amen
