- 0:10hello paxy here i bet you missed your
- 0:14favorite space explorer didn't you today
- 0:17i want to talk to you about something
- 0:19really important come with me
- 0:23[Music]
- 0:24can you see the thin layer surrounding
- 0:26earth
- 0:27it's the atmosphere it contains the air
- 0:30we breathe made of gases like oxygen but
- 0:33it also acts as a protection to keep us
- 0:36warm from the deep cold of space and
- 0:39makes life on earth possible
- 0:41in fact the atmosphere is like a
- 0:43greenhouse around our planet
- 0:46keeping its temperature just right
- 0:49not too hot and not too cold
- 0:52but
- 0:53what's a greenhouse
- 0:55greenhouses are those funny looking
- 0:57houses with glass walls and roofs that
- 1:00you see in gardens and fields they're
- 1:02called green because they're used to
- 1:05grow flowers and vegetables
- 1:07sunlight shines on the glass and warms
- 1:10the air inside making it nice for the
- 1:12plants to grow the glass also prevents
- 1:15the heat from escaping
- 1:17keeping the temperature just right for
- 1:19the plants
- 1:20some of the gases present in the earth's
- 1:22atmosphere called greenhouse gases work
- 1:26just like the glass roof of a greenhouse
- 1:28for your planet they let the right
- 1:30amount of warmth from the sun reach the
- 1:33surface and trap some of it in so that
- 1:36not all the heat produced by the sun
- 1:38goes back up into space and this is what
- 1:41we call the greenhouse effect but
- 1:44scientists all over the world are
- 1:46worried because the greenhouse effect is
- 1:49becoming too strong the earth is getting
- 1:52warmer and too fast
- 1:54faster than at any other time in the
- 1:56earth's entire history
- 1:59but
- 2:00why come with me to find out
- 2:04human activity increased the amount of
- 2:06greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to
- 2:08dangerous levels especially carbon
- 2:11dioxide
- 2:13how
- 2:14by burning oil coal and natural gas for
- 2:16energy
- 2:18by driving cars
- 2:23by polluting the environment with
- 2:25factories
- 2:26and raising huge quantities of animals
- 2:29for the food industry
- 2:40humans also cut down trees to build
- 2:43houses
- 2:45or use the land to raise cattle or plant
- 2:48crops
- 2:52this is also making carbon dioxide rise
- 2:55because trees are good at absorbing this
- 2:57gas and taking it out of the atmosphere
- 3:00so the less trees we have the less
- 3:03carbon dioxide is absorbed and the more
- 3:06of it we have in the atmosphere all this
- 3:09carbon dioxide is making the greenhouse
- 3:11effect too powerful
- 3:13and increasing temperatures on earth by
- 3:16trapping too much heat in
- 3:19so how can we fix this problem well the
- 3:22good thing is that lots of countries are
- 3:24working together to change this and
- 3:26reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they
- 3:29produce
- 3:30another good thing is that you can help
- 3:32as well
- 3:34walk jog use your bike or skateboard to
- 3:37go places instead of getting a ride in a
- 3:39car don't waste clean water because it
- 3:42takes a lot of energy to produce it turn
- 3:45off your tablet computer or the tv when
- 3:48you're not using it turn off the lights
- 3:50when you leave the room unplug and last
- 3:54but not least recycle everything you can
- 3:58you can make a difference
- 4:01so
- 4:02today we learned that
- 4:04the greenhouse effect makes life on
- 4:06earth possible
- 4:08human activity increased the greenhouse
- 4:10gases especially carbon dioxide
- 4:14this made the greenhouse effect too
- 4:17powerful raising temperatures on earth
- 4:20humans need to reduce the amount of
- 4:23carbon dioxide they produce
- 4:25and there is lot you can do to help fix
- 4:28this problem
- 4:31see you next time for our next adventure
- 4:53[Music]
- 5:06you
